- Full version repost of our 2019 trip down the Steel. Edited from scratch, with the length less than half of the original series. This was Erin's first trip with moving water (not including trips with her parents as a child) and my first time paddling tandem in whitewater. It's amazing how important communication is...just knowing the right words to describe what you want them to do. We learned a lot.

I remember the first time I caught a blue walleye too, I thought I had caught some sort of freak of nature. I couldn't google it either because we had no service. Pretty neat!

Lol it's the price to pay for so many lakes and rivers in Ontario. Lots of breeding ground for bugs. I'll pay that price :)

Suggestion on the canoe repair get some pine 🌲 resin heat it up over the fire 🔥 in a pot it will melt apply to damage area let dry should be good to go! Awesome video I loved it 😎

They aren't this is just another repost...
John, there are for plastic, 2 phase repair kits. About 500 grams, a triangular file and some sandpaper to it. With this you can repair everything on the canoe, except really big breaks and cracks.

BARBLESS HOOKS.
I went on a three day motorcycle camping trip with a buddy of mine and camped in Algonquin Park. We rented a canoe and went fishing. On the last day my buddy sat on a barbed hook and it got stuck very deep where he could not reach it himself to get it out. He also could not ride his bike home for the 150 mile trip because it hurt so much. He pleaded for my help! Good thing he was a good friend or I would have told him to seek professional help. But I said that he probably would have helped me if it was the other way around. We had to sneak into a gas station washroom to avoid people talking. I took the scissors on a Swiss Army knife and cut into his butt about a quarter inch to get it out. To say the least it was no fun for me but extremely painful for him. He probably could have used a couple of stitches but we had a good bandage. We had to stop every 20 miles on the way home cause it was too painful for him to ride his bike. Butt we made it home that day and laugh together every time we tell the story. He toughed it out and probably has the scar to prove it!!!!

When I was maybe 15 I got a giant muskie treble look stuck in my calf. That wan not fun pushing all the way thru to cut the barb off! Watch out!!
Oh man...so brutal. Barbs just ain't worth it
As a fly fisher I always crush down the barb before tying any flies.
I can just imagine the people outside the gas station bathroom listening to the sounds of a man screaming in pain on the inside and another mam shouting words of encouragement and saying, "wont be much long I am almost done" lol

We do trips in a 20ft Minnesota 3 Wenona Kevlar canoe. Very fast. 4.25mph. But dangerous in rapids

This was back in July 2019 but we finally have helmets now :)
I always carry a little Flex Tape, it's a life saver for holes.
Duck tape all you need for everything don't by the cheap stuff though

Great video, thanks for sharing the adventure! I've used JB weld epoxy puddy for the bottom of my kayak to help with the scrapes and in my repair kit. It should hold on the the roughed up areas fairly well if bondo stayed on there.

Wow, great trip! Can’t believe all the fish you caught but I didn’t see you eat any. 3 owls at once. It’s pretty rare to see owls in the day let alone 3 at once. I’ve been lucky to see the same owl in winter and summer in the daytime.

Thanks Matt, this was July 2019. I've done the Steel twice, both times in July. The whitewater would be a lot better in June. A lot of it is bony by July and the long swifts get really shallow which can take the biggest toll on the canoe...a fair amount of bottoming out and wading.

For species like pike, muskie, walleye and other toothy fish we ALWAYS use a lip grip so as not to disturb the protective slime coating on the fish. Rapala makes a good one with a scale.
I appreciate that but my understanding is that as long as you wet your hands, which we do, the slime will be okay. Dry hands are bad though. Lip grips can be good if the belly is supported/no vertical holds

4:35 Vagal response. Cold water applied to the back of the neck can help. Also, the jerk technique with a piece of looped fishing line doesn't hurt and it's best done with a second person doing the tug while the hooked person holds the hook eye down against the skin.

some "déjà vu" but a nice one with your old reliable canoe. You can remove the floating box at each ends and replace by inflatable canoe bags that are lighter many more buoancy so safety mostely wend you go one canoe alone. For my expediton canoe group i am the fixing guy, and my first glue to have is Soo-Goo, that is cheap stick on anyting and easy to use. You make real good fishing and peopole realy like to see the "fish and cook" . . .

My dad and I always carry some UV cured polyester resin aka surfboard resin, and fiberglass cloth for repairs. With the sunlight the resin cures in 30-60 seconds.

G-Flex epoxy for fixing kayaks or canoes my friend. Used by itself or with a strip of fiberglass mesh. They make a layering video for the mesh. Looks very permanent. Made just for this purpose. Great vid. Reminds me of the Madawaska river where I'm originally from. Less fish by far tho. Lots of rock bass. Nice to see they aren't in these systems.

Used to canoe as a kid all the time in my grandfathers aluminum Grumman. Took it out with my wife a couple of years ago and hooked the keel on a tree stump. Dumped us overboard trying to scootch off the stump. First time I have ever gone over in a canoe. The keel was great for speed and steering but not so much for dodging unseen stumps. Luckily my dry bags under the bow and stern kept that old Grumman afloat... Didn't lose a thing other than pride. I don't swim that good anymore at 50 and overweight...
The fish hook injury reminds me of when you did that a year or so ago on a solo.
I feel your pain with the hook in your leg.. when I was a teenager I caught a largemouth close to shore and didn’t let it fight enough, it did a couple of flips and I ended up getting both treble hooks in my hand while the fish was still flipping around. Somehow it flipped off and I passed out from the pain.. luckily some older fishermen was nearby and somehow popped both the treble hooks out. Honestly I don’t even remember that part, I probably fainted several times before it was all over. Good times. I’ve been afraid to pull out a lure with my hands for 30 years since then so I never go fishing without some needle nose pliers.
Agh...good lesson for all. Something about it really makes you wanna faint
A thermocell works wonders for a lot of those bugs. I never leave home without mine. I’d love to take a trip like that with a little more stable craft with my wife for a week or two. We would take it nice and slow and enjoy every little thing there is to see
I didn't realize there were blue walleyes; in northern Alberta where I used to live the walleyes are golden in color. Had some good walleye fishing on the Wabasca River and once was fishing in a big back eddy and hooked a small walleye when there was a sudden swirl in the water as a huge pike tried to swallow it head first but the tight line prevented it

Wow you could catch your limit in the spot , I love walleye and walleye cheeks so tasty. Ouch that hurts when you get a hook in the skin. been there done that feel for you. Beautiful eagle shot. as well as a beautiful area all round , that was a very epic waterfalls area WOW., and the wildlife so awesome cant say enough what a beautiful adventure this must have been loved this

How to painlessly remove a barbed hook. 1. Hold the eye of the hook against the skin with your thumb 2. Loop a piece of string around the bend of the hook. 3. Line up the string with the shaft. 4. Jerk the string straight out and the hook will fly out without pain or tearing your skin. Done this many times in my clinic. Holding the eye down causes the hook to rotate out without catching the skin. Easy Peasy. Love your videos. SSmith MD

Lol naw, not a fan of DEET and even with it, with thick bugs they're still swarming around you. We just cover our skin with clothing and have bug jackets if they're really bad

... What a great paddle adventure... Awesome wildlife all along the way ... Amazing fishing ,,pretty much the entire trip , a couple meals with walleye would have been meant to be ... bummer on canoe issues ,, cavities (if closed) are usually foam filled,surprised there was any room for water to store.... drill a couple small relief holes on inside might help ,,also install a keelguards along both keels... to be commonly on low water and rocks might want to look into a canoe (whitewater design) without a keel ...keels are nice for tracking control but don't play well with rocks ... more for flatwater use.... Thanks for bringing us into the mindset of better times to come ...

Thanks Jay! I'd say it comes down to the weight. Our 17ft expedition canoe weighs 65lbs and I'm very glad to have the pads on that one. Canoes around 50lbs and under, I'm good with just a wooden yoke as long as it's contoured (deep dish).
@@LostLakes I did not think of that. I am now relegated to having adventures thru u. Never taken a portage without a 70-75 lb AL canoe. Last time was 2016 just to prove I still could. If I ever go in again yes I will rent light!🤔. Thanks again Jon! Take care
