  • Last week marked the 20th anniversary of a plea from Pope John Paul II to then US President George W. Bush. In a meeting in Rome in July 2001, the 81 year old Holy Father asked the president to reject research on human embryos, also called stem cell research. The now saint said the study devalues and violates human life. President Bush was noncommittal but said the research did have serious moral implications. Doctor Joe Zalot, Staff Ethicist at the National Catholic Bioethics Center, joins to talk about stem cell research, what it entails, the purpose and what the Catholic Church says about it. Dr. Zalot shares what has happened with stem cell research since Pope St. John Paul II met with George Bush and how things have changed. Dr. Zalot has been studying something called "adult pluripotent stem cells." He explains what this is and how they are an alternative to stem cell research. The staff ethicist at the National Catholic Bioethics Center discusses whether there are any ethical issues using adult pluripotent stem cells.
