Sung and played softly,bc it's recorded at night in his home and he didn't want to wake up his little son. He did wake up anyhow, just asked "Daddy is that the Blackbird" and fell back asleep. Or so the story goes. Listen to" High and Dry", Geoffs personal favourite. He said he did that for himself, as he had recorded Shenandoah for his wife. It's said he has a 5 octave range. In Halo down to B0. In Enemy he goes way up after his bass solo and meet AleXa high up there, making it hard to tell the transition. Oogie Boogie man gives a glimpse of his range, though then he had not gone under F1 yet. He constantly challenges himself.
Layne challenges him too when he does the arrangements. Same with costumes. You can pretty much tell it's Layne's when Geoff is dressed in Alot of makeup in a Voiceplay video. And Geoff always meets those challenges. Hey! What are best friends for? These 2 have known each other since middle school and are now in their early 40s.
I thought Oogie Boogie ends with an E1, which was his lowest at the time. Regardless, not only does Geoff challenge himself, so does Layne. His arrangements often have Geoff use his full range.
@@randominerecords please please do a reaction video of Geoff's new solo cover of Ghosts Riders In The Sky. It's his best one yet & just came out today Saturday morning at 11am.
I have also found Geoff's nasal tone to be a bit distracting at times, it's especially noticable in My Mother Told Me, but it's a small thing to quibble about when there is so much to enjoy: the smooth tone, the range of roughly five octaves, his arrangements and his humour. He has worked on his low bass range for years and the lowest he's managed to achieve is a C1, in Way Down, but he had to work at that and he can go down to a D1 - Rains of Castomere - comfortably. I haven't noticed him sounding that nasal though for some time so I imagine he's worked on that and found another way of placcing the voice where he wants it;.
I noticed the nasal in his voice mostly in The House Of The Rising Sun. Some bass singers have a problem in that field. But it's Geoff & I love Geoff no matter what.
His recorded range is A0-A5. Although, there are clips of him playing around going lower and higher... his comfort-zone is A0-A5, though. His tessitura seems to be A1 to about B4, which 3 octaves for what they call the "money notes" is HUGE; most people have a tessitura of only around 1.3 octaves.
Geoff has a standard range of 5 octaves, though he has on occasion gone higher (kinda hard to go below a 0). He doesn’t like to though and anything above the sixth octave hurts for him to do, he has on recording hit a C7#.
@@akakscase, his tessitura lies around A1 - B4, though. That is incredibly phenomenal, nevertheless. A lot of people with a 6-7 octave range don't have a tessitura that wide. And, for a bass to get to B4 in head voice like Geoff can is VERY rare.
his recorded range is A0 to A5, but he's said in his "How to sing low-Your questions answered part 2"-video that he has a little bit higher than A5 on "good vocal days". his A5 is something he says he has "at any given time" and considers it as part of his "natural range".
Yea for Geoff/Voiceplay Mondays!! I think that current crop of acapella basses all have similar ranges, the range isn't what gets me. Geoff has a beautiful sound, his tone is gorgeous, and he can switch it out from menacing to silly. I love it all. Geoff has only been doing solo work since the pandemic, so his library has fewer than 20 pieces, all of them good. My personal favorite is the one he did last Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. I heard Geoff first with 16 Tons, that led me to Voiceplay. Voiceplay suggestions: Silly - Butter, We Don't Talk About Bruno, Bang Earth shattering - The Dragonborn Comes/Skyrim, Warriors, Hoist the Colours Sweet - Man in the Mirror, Go the Distance, Can't Help Falling in Love Welcome to the rabbit hole, you'll love it! I subscribed when you reacted to House of the Rising Sun!
On one of the "Singing low bass" videos on his channel, Geoff only claims to have a 4 octave range. I've read a lot of other people make larger claims for him, and 4 octaves seems kind of "light" to me as well, but if Geoff is happy with 4 octaves, I'm not going to disagree with him! To hear Geoff sustain a very low note even longer, take a listen to Misty Mountains Cold - the final note just keeps going, and going, and going....
Great reaction, thanks. In Enemy (VoicePlay) Geoff went from A0 to D5. One of my personal favorites is "Ain't No Sunshine." It's a gorgeous arrangement.
5 Octaves - Enemy, I've heard two bottom notes don't know which is right either A0 or B0 to A5. When he worked at Disney, his build was slight so he was put into tenor roles instead of the villian bass roles. I've heard him say he's not a natural bass but if he isn't, then no one is. I love High and Dry. One of the really recent fun ones is a cover of Elvis' Way Down. And if you like Tolkien he does a great one from the Hobbit, Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold. With Geoff and VoicePlay keep the video going until the Patreon role begins. They have a wicked way of throwing a treat in for those that stick around to the end. If you do VoicePlay's Just Sing (it is a song with many of the featured artists that has worked with VoicePlay) MAKE SURE you turn on the captions because you will find out where all these people came from and what their claim to fame is. It's an eye-opener.
Omar Cardona is on The Voice as of a week or 2 ago. The one I saw was the Blind Audition. The first judge to spin round was at 20 sec. He was singing Journey's Separate Ways. It's on UA-cam and you might enjoy it. I grew up in the 60s - graduated 68 and on to college. Civil rights were forward. Paul McCartney was asked about this one. He said it was to honor the American Civiil Rights Movement. Blackbird fly, take these broken wings and learn to fly, you've just been waiting for this moment to be free, take these sunken eyes and learn to see. It's not gone as quickly as I thought it would or could, but much has changed. I want justice for people of color. I want us to fulfill the treaties we signed nearly 200 yrs ago with the Cherokee and other native Americans. They were supposed to have a not voting representative in the the House. We need to make that happen.
I'll be here for anything VoicePlay or Geoff. The Geoff Quintet. More Geoff's all the better. It's been said that his range is about 5 octaves. There are many videos done on his range. His vocal range from what I have looked up is B0 to A5.
Awesome idea to do Mondays, Geoff/VoicePlay fans are very loyal and enthusiastic, I always try to drop at least a like and usually a comment to help out any reactors. And I want you to be honest, if you're not really liking a particular cover/song, I'd rather you say it. I don't think I've ever hated any of their songs, but there are definitely ones that are just not my particular 'cup of tea' and won't be ones that are on my 'repeat playlist'.
Great reaction. The lift of the eyebrows talk without your mouth moving lol. . I'd not heard this one before Geoff covered it. Not a follower of the Beatles....... My personal ballad favourite of his, is Shenandoah... That's another one he accompanied himself on piano... Im not a fan of a low low note for the sake of it. But mostly his ballads are baritone with bass.... If you know what I mean... With Voiceplay hoist the colours, he slides low to high on his solo, then at the end holds a long note.. So impressive

It is said he has a 5 Octave range. But personally I think he has more. He can go super high and super low. B0-G5 is alot. As a teen he was a tenor. But as he grew older his voice deepened. When Voiceplay was on the Sing Off season 4 with Home Free they became friends. Tim Foust, their bass showed him how to go super deep. . In the Halo Theme video he does the B0. In his new video The Rains of Castamere from Game of Thrones he goes to D1 several times. It is a beautiful and epic song and video. My favorite by far.
@@randominerecords Awesome. Glad I could help. Anything else just ask. I'm a huge Voiceplay and Geoff Castellucci fan and have learned a lot about them. If for some reason I don't know I'll tell you when you ask.
Tim only showed Geoff the growl technique, which is Tim's go-to for extending his range lower. While Geoff occasionally uses the growl, his main technique to go lower is subharmonics, which he learned from David Larson's UA-cam tutorials.

In one, Geoff makes a scary face at the end of his tongue-twisting solo. Always cracks me up.
