I saw a 4bt run on a dyno at PDD and It got really good mileage from what I remember. Seems he ran quiet a bit of boost pressure. Rob what is the temp of the oil you want to stay below . I thought you mentioned once about running a bigger oil cooler on a 6bt once and I thought if I ever have mine down I definitely going to replace it with what ever you recommend..

Hey Rob, I have a full set of gauges. Coolant temp, trans temp, boost, EGT 1150 max when the Allison kicks in 6 gear at 1400 RPM. At high RPM EGT's are never a issue as rarely see over 1000 accelerating. The 4BT has hx30 over K27 along with very cleaned up intake bowels and fully done exhaust porting matched to Steed Speed exhaust. The fuel system does not allow it to "roll coal" as I prefer to get good fuel millage and not annoy my neighbours.
The rod bearings failed as I bought a aftermarket rebuild gasket and bearings set as Cummins did not have a .020" thick head gasket in stock and getting HD Clevite bearings was not happening last June. I have the proper HD Clevite bearings on my work bench now to install (do not put things off) along with a 6BT oil pump. Rob, I will get a 6BT oil cooler to install.
A huge contributing factor, I believe, was #1 injector. The set of injectors had about 4000 hrs. When we checked the opening pressure was 3400PSI average (500 PSI low) with a drip on #1 trying to hold 2000PSI.
New injectors here today. Dynamite Diesel stage 2. Below is a very similar equiped 4BT on the dyno at PDD.

    Rob thanks for the videos!!

Looks like Reliance parts. If that is the case it probably needs an extra .002" piston to wall clearance versus cummins spec because their alloy swells bad. How high was your timing? Sounds like you are geared pretty tall if that is the case you probably don't want timing over about 14deg. If you are timed at 20 but the engine mostly lugs around at 1500 it will make excessive cylinder pressure and heat. The heat would not show in the egt because it would be dumping it into the engine components from early firing rather than it going out the exhaust.

@@bcbloc02 17 degrees as per my injector instructions. 3.73 gearing with 17" tires. I do not want to drive around at 2000 RPM at 120Km/h (120x.6266 = 75mph) with a 2850KG truck (2850x2.2 = 6270lb). I run 1700 RPM@ 120km/h my EGT's are 7-750, climbing a hill is 850ish. EGT Probe before the turbo where the Steed speed has the plug for it.

@@kevinarmstrong9581 What fuel mileage do you get with these numbers? My ‘98 12V NV4500 on 325/60R18 runs 1800 RPM at 70 MPH and close to 2K at 75. Considering wind resistance at 75, 1400 ripp’ems sounds low esp for a four cylinder but I’m definitely interested in knowing what kind of fuel economy you’re squeezing out of it.

@@preachers4135 When i had the 4BT in a 97 F150 2WD with a NV4500 I got 8.5L/100KM (27 USMPG) on a long trip in the summer with some city driving but that was a very light truck and the trip was through flat Saskatchewan from Edmonton. I get 10 to 12L/100km (19.5-23.5 USMPG) depending how much is city driving plus winter or summer fuel makes a huge difference. I know people will say they can get that millage in a gas truck but if I drove a gas truck the same way i would get 14-15L/100km.
1400 RPM is at 90km/h (55mph) when the Allison shifts into 6 gear when barely touching the diesel pedal. If you are accelerating hard it shifts into 6 gear at a much higher RPM, so please don't worry about the 4Bt being lugged to much. I never stay at 90km/h though, its on my way to 110 (70mph) or 120 (76mph) on Hwy 2 here in Alberta with its 110km/h speed suggestion. If I drove 1400rpm at 90km/h the millage would be amazing as the boost gauge barely registers any at that speed.

Rob, have you posted a video on installing an oil temp sending unit and addition cooler? I have a Isspro gauge but the silly sending unit is huge. Was planning on adapting it into a galley plug but there’s gotta be a better option.

My 4bt VE Pump has 5x013 SAC nozzles and fuel screw turned, fuel pin and afc crown turned, I currently use a he221w but I want to increase the power, would the hy35w be a good choice? or should i go with a borgwarner k24 compressor 47.5 and turbine 49.5 mm?

    • @CUTTERUPROB
      @CUTTERUPROB  Рік тому +1

Really depends on how much power you want. I find the hy35 a bit laggy myself. But depends on the setup. If you can find a cheap hy35 is a good option to try out to see if you like it.

@@CUTTERUPROB I wanted as much power as I could safely hahaha Maybe the K24 is a better alternative because it doesn't have laggy then.

Oil squirter plugged !!! For sure over heated ! Wrong or bad Injectors as it looks way too rich by the top of the pistons! In a gas engine running rich will run cooler and a diesel running rich will Over heat!

the jet was clear when we took the engine apart. That is why I took the 4BT to Rob last year. Chunk of head gasket in the oil cooling jet on #4. Not a happy wife right now and doing dishes sucks :(

It’s a good question. I haven’t had egt’s kill anything even at 2000* “inevitably it would cause damage but not in short bursts”
But a inadequate cooling system certainly could.
engine swaps are really bad about this.
