So, in the game, the original Rion was killed after Mother captured him and experimented on him. Then she brilliantly made a Galerian and implanted all of the original Rion's memories including the half of the code meant to kill her into the new Rion just so she could take care of the second half of the code which would be useless without the first half. And then she created Cain as a third copy (presumably without Rion's memories) to stop Rion and exposition dump this. Yeah, this story is hot garbage but I spent my childhood playing this trash.

The evil version was then created as a hastily created countermeasure and to play mind games. All in all, not a bad plan but like usual with villains that have a god complex it was her arrogance, lack of understanding, failure to actively create an appropriate countermeasure, and overlooking the details that brought her end.
Actually, it may be presented as trash but the ideas aren't that flawed intrinsically. If the Galerians had some bodily limit aspect (like how test-tube clones usually melt after a couple minutes/hours/whatever) because of the immense power they have taking such a toll on the body, Rion could have been the experiment granting resistance/immunity. He could carry that code but not express it himself, allowing the "pure Galerian code" to be copied and used for subsequent Galerians so they don't overtax themselves into melting. Also making the code more-literally, like, a computer code. Original Rion dies from the stress, but Mother (before or after using the "pure Galerian code" as the new baseline) recreates him with a clone...including the "self-destruct" code so that he could be used as a kill-switch sleeper-agent against "rogue" Galerians. However, part of that code brought Original Rion's memories with it. This would justify his ease in overcoming other Galerians, and make the fights less, well, bad. He could even have the subconscious implant to eliminate what's-her-name who similarly developed such a disconnect between the "pure code" and "self-destruct code". Thus his desire to find her and the story leading him to her. ----- Cain in this context is a "refined" Rion Clone, being able to activate the kill-switch in Rion although without the memories associated with it in the player's Rion that enable him to revolt. ------ Admittedly I don't know how the code itself works in the game or OVA, so I might be missing something. But this should be a generally-applicable method that doesn't mess with the story too badly. (It would, however, benefit from a few line-changes/dubs to integrate the mechanics reliably).
By the way, Galerians: Ash begins with a run-down of the story from the first game, making this OVA obsolete even for people who'd be starting their misadventure in the sequel.

That show Cinematech that ran on G4 used to show cutscenes from Galerians: Ash. They were so intriguingly uncanny valley and stilted that I ended up buying the PS2 game out of morbid curiosity (it was in the bargain bin). It was odd.
Its easy to explain. Rion once existed, alive and was best friends with lilia. Dorothy (mother) created cain to get her but his eyes were green and she knew the girl would know so she restarted, creating rion. She copied the original rions brain into her galerian copy of him. He ended up fighting his way out of the mega hospital so she sent birdman and the other galerians out to kill him since he was going rogue. When he brought lilia to the mushroom tower to confront dorophy (mother) she ordered him to kill her, hoping she had some control over him since he was so close to her. Aka rion is a galerian copy of the original with the same memorys so lilia would trust him so he could bring her to mother
When they featured this on MTV they added some amazing music to the dubbed version. Its like they added what was missing from the movie. I am so nostalgic for the Galerians. Movie. Not the game. Oh yeah. All the characters sure did look super pissed all the time..lol
I mean, one running theme in the game is that Rion is managing his anger via medicine, so him being pissed is on par for the course (though the game was a whole lot less edgy).
I always thought I'd have to lend you my copy of Galerians: Rion in order for you to review it, but I'm glad that wasn't the case. The Galerians "franchise" is a guilty pleasure of mine and the fact that there's still a small yet hardcore fanbase proves that it had something special/unique about it's concept but suffered poor execution. I'm one of those that are glad to have gotten the movie overseas despite the shortcomings it had. It still looks ahead of it's time in terms of production value in my opinion. P.S. Cain is also a clone Galerian of Rion but he came out wrong, green eyes and didn’t have the right demeanor of the real Rion, this is why Cain despise Galerian Rion because Cain was created to find Lillia but instead to kill Rion by the order of Dorthy if Galerian Rion Memories of the real Rion prevents him from killing Lillia since the real Rion had feelings for her.
So sorry it took so long to finish watching this. It is just that every shot from this movie makes me go to the Retsupurae channel to relive some of my favorite series, including Galerians.
This game kicked ass back then. I bought this game at Walmart back when it came out and loved it. However i never finished it cuz if you ran out of recovery pills you basically had to start the game over and save em till the very end. (Not cool) but I really liked this game. I feel it would of been better if came out on Xbox360 or ps3 instead of ps1. Great game
Yeah, you have to conserve recovered pills, but it ain't hard. I had no Delmetor during the fight with Rita, and because of that, it made the fight more difficult because if I shorted, I was DEAD. Someone less brave than me would've dropped the game or restarted it, but I kept on, and through sheer will I managed to beat her. I still feel satisfied about it.
This has some of the most hilarious anime-screams and cgi derp-faces I've ever seen. Thank you so much for showing me this glorious piece of hilarious shit, Sage! xD
Let's be fair to the ancient milk in the room here, but Galerians was pretty impressive for it's time, if you have low enough standards. It was leaps and bounds better than some of the cheap CGI they were churning out at the time in the states, too.

Yeah, you're not alone there. While I can never go back to the first game because the gameplay is too slow, the movie and Galerians: Ash makes me wish there was newer adaptations of the story and characters.

I liked the galerians games during the golden years of ps1 and ps2 the story may have been weak and little dumb but I loved the idea of playing a character with an arsenal of powers like telepathy and telekinesis. Like other forgotten games like parasite eve.
You know what the funny thing is? One of the few things the anime was inaccurate about was the boss fights. Even though it's partly due to clunky controls, boss fights were a serious nuisance in the PS1 game. :-P
This was something that intrigued me during my younger years. It had the potential to be something great, like a dark psychological series set in a dystopia with a dash of mystery. Sadly, Rion only became a lingering distant memory.

Rion in the movie is just a clone of the real Rion who died during the experiments in the lab and was unable to survive the drugs that was inplanted on him, they gave the clone the real memories of Rion to make him more real and able to get Lilia, the game was more obvious on this

@Suite Life Of The Brando Makes me realize that maybe if they weren't so focused on using the latest and greatest of things to put this trope out and instead tried to just work with what they had, it might have looked better. Look at RE4. RE4's engine was less advanced (I *think*. I'm not sure.), but the cutscenes, especially with closer shots of characters faces, look natural and less pants darkeningly terrifying. Why? Because RE4 understood that a humans face, even in a natural expression, doesnt just sit still. There is almost always movement of the body, even a small amount. Also it understood to keep to a art style and face style that didnt look horrifying in the medium it was using.
I remember watching this on UA-cam a few years back, then looking up gameplay footage and asking....Da Hell?!?!!? Not long after, I obtained Galerians Ash at a Flea Market and gave a play. I regret the hours I waisted and the 5$ I spent on that game.

The first Galerians was a game that I hyped up in my own mind, cause I couldn't find it for sale anywhere. My thought process was: someone must be buying it, so it must be good. I went through the same thing with the anime Gestalt. Both were terribly disappointing.
I actually own both this DVD and th soundtrack. Love the music they chose. The movie is dumb as all hell but the fights I felt were fun to watch. Just be grateful they swapped the voice of Rion to the sequel voice and not use the ORIGINAL voice from the first game. I shudder at the thought
It's not that they insist on reminding us of better works. It's that when we don't like a work, we latch on to things that remind us, but when the work us good, we simplt note those as homages and are willing to pay attention to the thing we are watching.

You know what the funny thing is? One of the few things the anime was inaccurate about was the boss fights. Even though it's partly due to clunky controls, boss fights were a serious nuisance in the PS1 game. :-P

Rion in the movie is just a clone of the real Rion who died during the experiments in the lab and was unable to survive the drugs that was inplanted on him, they gave the clone the real memories of Rion to make him more real and able to get Lilia, the game was more obvious on this
And cain was an earlier clone but had green eyes, mother knew that lilia would notice so she restarted with rion and kept cain as a protector

@Suite Life Of The Brando Makes me realize that maybe if they weren't so focused on using the latest and greatest of things to put this trope out and instead tried to just work with what they had, it might have looked better.
Look at RE4. RE4's engine was less advanced (I *think*. I'm not sure.), but the cutscenes, especially with closer shots of characters faces, look natural and less pants darkeningly terrifying. Why? Because RE4 understood that a humans face, even in a natural expression, doesnt just sit still. There is almost always movement of the body, even a small amount. Also it understood to keep to a art style and face style that didnt look horrifying in the medium it was using.
It IS ps2 graphics.

I remember watching this on UA-cam a few years back, then looking up gameplay footage and asking....Da Hell?!?!!? Not long after, I obtained Galerians Ash at a Flea Market and gave a play. I regret the hours I waisted and the 5$ I spent on that game.

The first Galerians was a game that I hyped up in my own mind, cause I couldn't find it for sale anywhere.
My thought process was: someone must be buying it, so it must be good.
I went through the same thing with the anime Gestalt. Both were terribly disappointing.
Another game that keeps telling the same story using an updated engine: Wild Arms.

I actually own both this DVD and th soundtrack. Love the music they chose. The movie is dumb as all hell but the fights I felt were fun to watch. Just be grateful they swapped the voice of Rion to the sequel voice and not use the ORIGINAL voice from the first game. I shudder at the thought

Rion in the OVA was voiced by Dave Wittenburg, who voices Ash in the Sequel. lol
It's not that they insist on reminding us of better works. It's that when we don't like a work, we latch on to things that remind us, but when the work us good, we simplt note those as homages and are willing to pay attention to the thing we are watching.
