There is no right or wrong way to flex in black culture. Flexin' within itself is an art form which can be performed by telling stories of selling crack, wearing 20 gold chains to owning apple stock or presented in a way as demonstrated in this song....stating your academic excellence but declining an offer in which most people (black or white) would take. :)
I just watched Luke Cage, and when this song came on I got chills and had to figure out who this was ASAP!! Thank you Marvel and thank you Jidenna!! ♥️
This is such a powerful song with a powerful message. We need more Hip-hop music like this, clear lyrics, no mumbling...with a beat that goes hard. Nothing but respect for this brotha.
I'm yet another Luke Cage viewer who had to look up this number and artist after seeing Jidenna's performance on the show. This eye-catching video provides a brilliant visual to the song. All the elements work. Special shout-out to the deadpan-faced pallbearers with their nifty moves perfectly complimenting the star and the story he's telling.
I like that he doesn't try too hard to seem like he's all gangsta'. He doesn't frown or wave guns around, he smiles and dances, and yet he's still a badass.
Been waiting for this visual. Sucks that songs like this won't be popular like "Classic Man" because people have to actually listen to the message. Keep speaking the truth, Jidenna. We need it.
Although I'm a fan of those artists, I do wish they provided a balance. Party tracks are necessary, but also speak to the people about what's really going on. I'm always up! #Insomniac haha
Yeah, that's because this song has no real mainstream appeal, it's not something that will get any radio play or something that people can bump to in the club. So yeah sadly it will most likely never be as popular, but nonetheless it's still a great song!
I didn't write the dictionary, but pretty sure disintegrate does not make any sense in this context. Thank you for trying to use a big word, you really don't understand, nice try.

This song really speaks to me. While it definitely has aspects of self-praise I think it's mostly about stepping up and being the kind of leader people deserve. The "King" in this song fights meaningless battles for shallow, egocentric reasons. He's even willing to risk his life in some pitiful, laughable squabble. The "Chief" is a mature and respected leader with a vision that goes far beyond himself. The King just can't run with the Chief because the King's motives are ultimately empty and short-sighted, while the Chief holds to ideals he'd gladly die for. Amidst a hip-hop scene so saturated with braggadocio, this song stands out like a welcome oasis.
Thanks, I was looking for the meaning in this song. Can't say I even understand all of the lyrics but I like the sound and I like the meaning behind the ones I do get. I'd love to see a lyric breakdown of this song. There was a guy who was doing that for awhile for the ERB battles where he explained the references and I loved it. Being a good leader who respects and cares for your people and thinks long term ways about improvement, rather than only in short sided selfish desires is a great message. I know he sounds reproachful, but a little reproach is what people fighting over petty things actually need.
awesofusspossufuss It's probably more so, but at least is has substance behind it that isn't only about money and selfish desire. I think there is some of that there too, but he makes points about looking ahead and not being petty. It's rare to see those points brought up. I don't think you will ever find much hip hop that is not braggodocious. But I'm probably not looking in the right places. My minor amounts of exposure to actual aspiring artists has shown them to be generally like that and to generally seem to have the sense that it is the best way to get people to like your stuff within that field. I think for some of them it might be an issue of trying to inspire a feeling of greatness. Think of the way you feel when you listen to that song about feeling good to be a gangsta. When you listen, it's easy to feel like a BAMF...even though the guys go on and on about themselves/the president...i.e. not you. That's just a guess though. I'm far from an expert on hip hop, rap, and R&B. Partially, I am turned off by all the bragging, drugs, and sex in a lot of the mainstream stuff. Like, I was totally down with OPP until I listened to the lyrics...then I totally hated that song forever.
Ant Boy what do you mean he stopped making music? The album is barely a year old. Most musicians don't pump out a billion albums. Also as for popularity some idiots will label you a backpacker for liking Jidenna, because god forbid you appreciate music with actual thought put into the lyrics. That just shows how screwy the rap community is right now.
man, I kept telling people this is one of the hardest tracks I've ever heard. Their faces seemed as if they didn't agree and all I can think is.... "IN WHAT WORLD!? DO WE HEAR THE SAME SONG!?"
@@wholelotta_vibes5908 he also said, "That's why I got admitted but I STILL REJECTED Harvard"! You gotta be the SHYT when you turn Harvard down! #NoSlangingCaneHere
Yeah, I honestly thought he beat out Fisk (who I was never really a fan of tbh) for being the best villain in the MCU. To be fair though, while they're not as good as Cottonmouth was, Mariah and Shades are shaping up to be fine villains themselves. And I haven't seen enough of Diamondback to make any judgement (I just finished episode 7 an hour ago) but I hear he's disappointing.
Bob Marley’s spirit in this man 😮 he the chief frfr ! King of kings and lord of lords. Gotta know the divine, history and music together to get what’s going on….

It's probably more so, but at least is has substance behind it that isn't only about money and selfish desire.
You're good. I like your intelligence
About time this song got a music video. This song is way to dope to not have one.
This song will never get old
I've been waiting for this since he preformed this during his VEVO session
this pure HEAT! Damn was not expecting this kinda fire.
Same here
Didn't expect you here goblin 😂
+Sean Jackson 😂😂😂😂 right I'm surprised as hell but dudes got good taste in music I see
+RevucumberTechUSA so because he's white he can't listen to rap? seems pretty fucking stupid let the guy listen to what he wants
classic man was dumbed down for the simpletons, that was to bring people in, now he has your attention, pretty smart huh!
I love Love LOVE the African vibe I'm hearing and seeing here in this video.
ezshorty he is Nigerian-American, grew up mostly in Nigeria
This is straight Poetry. makes it look so easy . seems so simple yet so complex. Lyrics/Flow are on point here
I know he went to Pop's Barbershop for that sharp beard!
Toxic Rize W
lol right
Lol I gotta set an appointment
Lol I need a touch up myself
Lol I need to touch myself.
Pure talent...the problem most people have is that its not sexual or disrespectful enough and he making too much sense. This world done man.
Exactly!
its not catchy enough
+Justin Daines it's very catchy
+R Farrs what he meant was the Taylor Swift - Shake It Off, kind of catchy
How is he not that popular. He's better then anyone I know. like it's kinda sad
Roman Teasdale He stopped making music for some reason so his popularity is plummeting drastically.
He's making a message now
he's popular in africa now. slaying with major lazer.
Well Jidenna respects black women, showcases them in a positive light, speaks the truth, need i go on?
Ant Boy what do you mean he stopped making music? The album is barely a year old. Most musicians don't pump out a billion albums.
Also as for popularity some idiots will label you a backpacker for liking Jidenna, because god forbid you appreciate music with actual thought put into the lyrics. That just shows how screwy the rap community is right now.
I absolutely love this! Very Lit! His performance on Luke Cage was phenomenal!
The second time you listen this, it gets like 100x better aha
+Jacques Boutros I'm on four straight...absolutely ridiculous
true when u first listen to it your likee okay okay.... then you get used to the beat and get the lyrics the second time
I'm sorry but in all my years I have never heard something harder instead of flexing drug and guns he flexes knowledge and make you feel stupid
That's true but he did say he was gon slang cane Idrc but just saying
Agreed
man, I kept telling people this is one of the hardest tracks I've ever heard.
@@SpicyWife4Life That’s coz he rejected Harvard and went to Stanford instead.
Simple yet complex.
+Carbon Instinct ....agreed, and so complex yet simple at the same time.
+Blvke Morgvn long live the chief bitch
My God he can build a whole gym with the amount of bars here
My neighbours love this song so much that they threw a brick at my window so they could hear it better.
TempTracks HD how original

LMAO 😂
LMAO
BOL. Should win an award for that one.
Luke Cage didn't bring me here, Cottonmouth did.
cheese4g it's a shame they killed him he was a G
Yeah, I honestly thought he beat out Fisk (who I was never really a fan of tbh) for being the best villain in the MCU.
To be fair though, while they're not as good as Cottonmouth was, Mariah and Shades are shaping up to be fine villains themselves. And I haven't seen enough of Diamondback to make any judgement (I just finished episode 7 an hour ago) but I hear he's disappointing.
Never call him that ..... it's Mr stokes lol
+GO Web before he throws you off of the building like tone
cheese4g Mr. Stokes...
