  • Douglas learns the hard way that we should listen to God and our parents, because they love us and they know what's best.
Douglas loves chocolate chip cookies, but not just any chocolate chip cookies-his MOM’S chocolate chip cookies. They are so delicious! One day, Douglas was up in his room and he could smell cookies baking, so he went downstairs to investigate. He watched the cookies baking and getting all perfect and tasty. His mom took them out of the oven and let them cool. Then she put them in the cookie jar. Their cookie jar looks like a cow, and when you open its head to get the cookies, it goes, “MOOO!” Douglas was so excited! She handed him two cookies, and he ate them immediately. Douglas asked for more, but his mom said that if he ate any more now he would feel sick; he could have more after dinner. This did not make Douglas very happy, and so he started to devise a plan to get those cookies. The problem was that the cookies were in the cookie jar way up on the shelf, and Douglas is not very tall. He tried to knock the cookie jar off the shelf with a broom, but the broom was too heavy and he ended up falling over himself. Then he had a great idea! He’d received a suction-cup bow and arrow set for his birthday last year, so he tied a rope to the arrow, took aim, and shot the cow cookie jar right on the nose. He pulled on the rope, and the cow fell off the shelf and broke into several pieces. Douglas scooped up the cookies, and as he was just about the head up the stairs with his prize, he realized the cookie jar was going, “MOOO!” He tried to fix it, but it was totally broken, so he hid the pieces under the rug; but he could still hear a muffled “mmmmm” coming from the broken cow. Hoping his mom wouldn’t find the cookie jar, he sneaked up to his room and started to eat-every single cookie. He got full after just a few cookies, but there were about four dozen of them! After eating every last cookie, Douglas felt SO SICK. He was bloated to what felt like the size of a baby beluga! When he heard his mom coming up the stairs, he quickly brushed the crumbs off the bed and covered himself in pillows so she wouldn’t notice what he’d done. She told him that his friends were outside, and they wanted him to come play soccer with them. Douglas loves cookies, but he also loves soccer. He likes to be the goalie and catch the ball. But he couldn’t go play right then-he could barely move! He tried to think up a lie, but then he remembered that moms have that super power where they always know when you’re lying. So he told his mom what he did. She was very upset and said, “I didn’t tell you not to eat more cookies because I wanted to ruin your fun! I said that because I love you and I know what’s best for you.”
Our parents (and teachers) have rules for us to live by, and we don’t always like those rules. In fact, it seems like we rarely do! And it’s the same with God. God has given us rules that we must follow, and these rules can be found in the Bible. A lot of times, these rules don’t sound like very much fun. We often feel like we know what’s best, and we try to live life our own way. But the rules that God and our parents set for us are not there because they like to boss us around. They love us, and they know what’s best for us. Especially God! So next time you feel like breaking a rule set for you, just remember why we need to obey God and our parents.
