That will only happen when more Americans travel outside the US. The US is such a big country so it's understandable why they don't feel the need to travel abroad. I used to work for a US company and my direct report was based in New Jersey and she had the opportunity to travel to Europe for the first time and she was really surprised how things are so different.

Apples to Oranges. The superbowl is the biggest game in the NFL. No game in any country's domestic league even comes close. It is a measure of how massive the NFL is that people need to compare it to international tournaments instead of the more accurate comparisons where it would get compared against other domestic leagues.

Nba same. All american leagues are designed to make money because the leagues and franchises system are a business and americans sees it more of an entertainment and are more casual than a passionnate fanbase. It has pros and cons.
But european sports and leagues are americanising themselves with all the sponsors presented before, mid-game and after, because sports are now the few events people still watch live on tv, so you HAVE to milk your -clients- fans money before they spend it elsewhere.
And for my upper neighbour : Baseball was made for grandpas to take a nap on the couch pretending to watch sport.
Nascar was made for "pilots" who can't drive on more than 2 turns circuits, because american roads are always straight, a round-about is sooo scary !

Biggest problem with American Football is that almost half the time is used for commercial breaks. There are no commercials during the two 45 minute periods in football(soccer).
American football is 4x15 minutes and a half time of like 10-15. Bu the games can last 2-3 hours with all the commercials, breaks and stoppages. A soccer game is 90 minutes + a 15 minute half time break and usually 1-5 minutes of additional time for each half depending on how much time is spent on substitutions and VAR checks. You can get additional time in a draw if there need to be a decision. That's 2x15 minutes of extra time and then a penalty shootout if it's still a draw.

And you forgot to mention the fact that the 30 minutes of extra time if there's a draw (only in knock-out matches) has only a 5 minute break before it starts and then there's no proper break between the two 15-min halves of this extra time, only whatever it takes for the players to change sides on the pitch and maybe have some water very quickly.

100% correct... But football is still far more boring than American football to an American. The commercials are there to let you argue/complain/praise the team to friends without doing it during the action 😂

When you compare soccer leagues to American sports leagues, you see that although soccer has more numbers, American sports reign Supreme when it comes to revenue. There's nothing wrong with enjoying football or hockey, or baseball - these are good games you enjoy watching.
The reason why soccer is different to all of those games - and dominates the world ...
Is that it's against the rules to stop playing!
There are no time-outs or commercials.
Anybody who delays the game gets the "yellow card" for time wasting!
Catching a ball is quite nice - but kicking it into a goal is extremely addictive! :)

Boxing, American football, martial arts, etc. It did not matter that people from all over the world was a part of it (and in some cases, people from other parts of the world couldn't care less). I don't mind much. If pushed, I might tell an American what I know as facts, but it doesn't bother me beyond that.

Typical American thinking.

I don't think my Belgian mother could name a single player in any of our top teams. And this isn't social sports like in the US where top teams often change. It's a rather stable set of 5-6 top teams for as long as I've been alive.
But damned does she watch every game of the national team. And she'll be the loudest person in the room.(So she counts already to the billions number there)
She of course also watches world cup finals. Argentina vs France most recently. And the occasional game of a neighboring country like the Netherlands and France.
The point here is that, rather similar to the superbowl in the US, even those not interested in the sport become fans for a few weeks. Flag outside of the house (you won't find a less patriotic country than us Belgians except maybe for Germans but it's literally the ONLY time you see flags here.)
But unlike the US where this happens nationally, this is a global thing. In my family the idea of not watching us play or not watching the finals is just not a thing. Even those that don't follow a team or anything like that during the year will be fans during it.
It's a spectacle one always looks forward to.
    "This shouldn't be a video"
Yea, we're always thinking that. Champions league might be a better comparison. It's a yearly event, but with it's world wide reach it's also not really a competition.(2x-3x viewership of the superbowl)
To give an idea. A random Barcelona vs Real Madrid match back during the time of Ronaldo and Messi could gather a viewership of 650 million people. I can not describe what it was like to have the Classico for a good number of years with those 2 in it. They were so far ahead of any other player on the planet as to be ridiculous, and both were supported by a star studded team.

Wouldn't it make more sense to compare it to the Champions League final or the many variations of the Champions League, since each part of the FIFA world have one and they're also annually

  • @Mandorle21
    @Mandorle21 18 днів тому

A closer and more fair comparison could be Super Bowl vs Champions League Final, WITHOUT taking into account the viewers outside Europe (because there would be many of them, and if we would do that, the Champions League final would definitely win by a very wide margin). The Champions League Final would still definitely win, but at least it would be on a similar range.
So basically, how much american football is watched in the US vs how much football (soccer) is watched in Europe.
Now, of course the problem would be defining what Europe is... the continent itself obviously doesn't have an official "border". We could just use the European Union which has defined borders, but that would exclude many european countries (like the UK) where football (soccer) is the main sport.

Doesn’t the actual concert that they have in the middle of the game get as much attention as the game itself. The World Cup involves almost every country on the planet entering a qualifying tournament that takes place over the course of 2 years with the final 32 teams that qualify then playing out the tournament itself once every 4 years. It’s kind of a big deal.
