A conductor does all his or her best and most critical work in rehearsal. This particular performance demonstrates that the shape of each phrase has been thoroughly crafted. Libertango is a wonderfully cogent but short sequence of a chromatic progression of chords over a ground bass, with only a short bridge to relieve its repetition. Played without inflection and variation, in spite of its inventive and well crafted form, it can even become boring and can be "thrown away" or "tossed off" by orchestras disinterested in what they perceive as "pop". Though on camera it may appear that the maestro is "doing very little" (its not supposed to be about the conductor anyway!), the dynamics and stylistic variation from aggressive to soaring, powerful to delicate, especially for a string ensemble of this size and at this tempo, are truly wonderful. Listen to other orchestra's performances, many of which lack this coloration and subtle interpretation; that says it all about maestro Gharabekian's conducting.

I used to valet for the Puerto Rico Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Arturo Somoano in the early 1970s. I watched every concert for a full year. Don Arturo never used a baton, only his hands. He had such beautiful form. As part of his presentation, he pretended to converse with the First Violinist. Then on another piece, he would put his hands down and allow the orchestra to play through a few bars without motioning with his hands. I remember saying in my mind, “Look Ma! No hands!”
One time he was replaced by the first fiddler on his absence because of a gout flareup. The new conductor was very enthusiastic and used the rod from the violin bow as his baton. This concert was in a park. In one of the pieces, the conductor was too aggressive and perhaps his hand became sweaty and the baton left his hands and flew over the audience and made this metallic sound when it fell on the cement. It was rather dramatic and embarrassing to the poor conductor.

So sad that he passed away! When I watched this for the first time during my critical hospitalization, I was so blown away by his STYLISH and CREATIVE conducting. It was perfectly in sync with the music! I watched this over and over during my hospitalization and gave me such comfort and strength. The most artistic conductor ever!!! I simply respect and love him so much!!
He did conduct with a unique style. I noticed he focused more on the dynamics in the music.
As a kid I worked as a ballet for the Puerto Rico Philharmonic Orchestra. I was about 14 years old. My job was to setup the orchestra music stands and transport the bass drum and the 2 string basses. The director, Don Arturo Somoano, never used a baton. I enjoyed the grace and artistic use of his hands to direct the tempo and the dynamics of the pieces. It was a great experience I enjoy for little over a year.
Not to be a spoil-sport, but for credit's sake this isn't Astor conducting, this is Aram Gharabekian.

На мой взгляд одно из лучших исполнений "Libertango". По крайней мере никаких лишних импровизаций. Понравилось. Браво!

RIP Aram Gharabekian he passed in '14. Beautiful Argentinean music by a genius compoer Piazzolla with Armenian tempo and arrangement. Gharabekian has managed to make this piece native to Armenian ear and emphasise the original idea at the same time.

the conductors work is not just keeping tempo. it's the interpretation. he makes them all play together for one sound. so if he makes a "grimace" as you say, he is showing the musicians: "you're doing it the best way!" i like this interpretation because of the effects, it's so strong and play by heart. this is what the conductor does ;)
