I think the worst character was Dusty. I didn't find him particularly interesting as a character and his whole thing is that he pretends to be a nice guy but is the mastermind behind all the shit that happens to people.

And Harper wasn’t apologetic at all, she really thought her going through that traumatic experience was enough to excuse all the shitty things she did 😭 Harper deserved to pay for her actions, she was a horrible person the entire season. To take advantage of Malakai while he was at his lowest and then to air out their night in front of the entire school to get revenge on Dusty was wild. I cannot stand that character

You're so right about consent with the "hook up", Malakai was absolutely taken advantage of and not able to consent. Also just wanted to note that Malakai wasn't targeted by the police for no reason, he's Indigenous and there is unfortunately a huge issue with racism and police brutality towards Indigenous Australians (we have our own Black Lives Matter movement here) and HH was trying to bring awareness/show the reality of being Indigenous in Australia.

I wouldn't even say Darren is completely flawless. Like the way they treated Cash sometimes and they reaction to Cash not wanting to have sex. I mean it definitely wasn't the best reaction but it was a real reaction so that makes them likeable but also not flawless I guess

I later understood how it was because Darren felt like they were unlovable, and so in that sense the reactions stemmed from insecurity, but I really felt for cash in those scenes---especially the bedroom scene where cash felt uncomfortable by Darrens advances and Darren responded with "there's something really wrong with you". As an ace person myself, I completely understood cash's perspective/reactions the whole time and even guessed he might be ace before he described it, so that line definitely hit hard. I wish Darren wouldve been less pushy about sex, or at least hear cash out and try to understand his pov, tho I understand his insecurities too. I still rlly enjoy Darrens character, I hope they talk about this more next season!

No, you're totally right about Sasha and Quinny! I'm autistic and it's literally so infuriating to watch because that's the exact way so many people treat us in real life. Sasha thinks she's responsible for Quinny despite knowing so little about autism/Quinny that she ignores all her needs consistently, to the point she causes a meltdown. As an autistic woman myself, Quinni was the most relatable! Seeing how condescending Sasha was to her was unfortunately SUPER relatable too. I never dated in high school, but I dealt with that same degree of people my age treating me like I was younger and couldn't understand what was going on. It portrayed an honest view of the autistic high school experience in a way I'd never seen in a show/movie before. Also, I had a super colorful style in high school like Quinni!
Im also on the spectrum and. have had a number of boyfriends since I was 14 (I’m now 27) . Sasha was really irritating at times, however she was nowhere NEAR as bad as some of the boyfriends I’ve had. I’ve experienced belittlement and people treating me like I have a low intellect, when in fact I’m above average intelligence. Sasha infantilized quinnie at times, but I think this was down to ignorance rather than maliciousness.

i agree with what you are saying (about the cassie vs amerie point) intention wise. amerie and harper intended for it to be a secret whereas lexi intended for it to be displayed. buuuut, i do think its pretty reckless to plaster such confidential information on a wall where if you could find it, who knows who else does down there to do whatever high school students do, you know? and i wholeheartedly agree with what you said about harper. I wish the show had talked a bit more about Darren's reaction to Cash not wanting to have sex, hopefully they will focus a bit more on it in season 2 but it just really rubbed me the wrong way. Darren was my favourite character up until they got so mad at Cash for not wanting to have sex with them. I totally get why they were that way and it fits their character to be so sex focused and seeking approval in that way but I wish that they had properly apologised to Cash for it and had more of a self-reflective moment beyond what happened with Quinni calling them out a bit and then finally accepting that they care for Cash more than they 'need' sex. If they had a scene or two where they really acknowledged they were in the wrong regardless of whether Cash was ace or not and properly apologised to him I would still call them my favourite character but for right now my favourite is Quinni (definitely not influenced by her being the best autism rep I have ever seen and me being autistic...)
You're not making things up or reading into things too much, malakai WAS sexually assaulted, and anyone who says he wasn't either isn't aware of how consent works (as in, in which situations you automatically cannot consent- being drunk, high, a minor (when in a relation with someone older, not 16 yo with a 17 yo and such), etc), or is under some horrid impression that men/guys can't be sexually assaulted, which... jesus christ, please work on that. I couldn't watch the entire show so I don't know if it ever gets properly addressed, but I unfortunately imagine in doesn't.
In general I just genuinely wish we could get a diverse and interesting high school show about gen z that doesn't feature sexual assault, doing hard drugs and alcohol, and similar dark topics- we have sex education, but even sex education doesnt have the autistic rep that this show does. I was so incredibly excited to finally watch a fun show with GOOD autistic queer rep (I followed chloe hayden before the show and knew shed rock it), only to be met with addressed and non-addressed sa, people doing ketamine in the bathroom (do hs kids do that??? is this just cultural disconnect because I'm not australian???), constant alcoholism and just SO much miscommunication (among other things). Call me boring, but I'm sick of having to try to sit thru *very* heavy shows about kids just to get queer and autistic rep of people my age on screen. P.S. @@talarothfor the map, she had every right to be mad. amerie wrote down personal stuff about sasha and her relationships which was an invasion of her privacy and broke her trust. also, for the threesome thing, sasha was justified in her anger, harper and dusty literally took advantage of malakai after a traumatic event that left him vulnerable. this doesn’t excuse sasha’s behaviour towards quinni, but those examples you gave were pretty bad considering she was justifiably angry in both instances.
as much as i agree with what you said abt harper, i am so glad they did not make the stereotypical "pure" victim. because most victims of trauma do tend to get unreasonable, esp for what she went through at her age, towards a friend that knew how her father was. definitely explains why she was the way she was, and i hope they let her mature and heal in the 2nd season
i was so mad when harper and dusty hooked up with malakai (sorry if it’s wrong) while he was clearly not ok, like very drunk and upset over the police harassing him, when she herself is a victim and has been acting like THAT the whole season about consent and trauma was insane to me not to say that the situations were comparable because obviously circumstances are different, but it still felt incredibly hypocritical of her

I'm so glad to have aboriginal representation in a show and the scene where Jai takes Malakai out bush! That was incredible to see in a Tv show. I loved the show! I love heartbreak high sm AND I LOVE that someone is talking about the plot and doing character analysis :) I wanna talk about Spider, he's so PROBLEMATIC and overall a big bully. When I found out that he's got a massive crush on Amerie I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW how to feel, but OML THAT SCENE AT THE FESTIVAL was so bloody cute. In my opinion I think that was the only time Spider looked genuinely happy. Tbh I understand why Spider was salty towards Amerie after she kicked him out but THAT does not justify his mean comments and actions and it's so obvious he's still in love w her. What I hope to see in season 2 is his redemption arc, GET THAT PERSONALITY FIXED CUZ IT SUCKS, he needs to do a full 360 before he can even THINK about rizzing up Amerie. Spider has so much potential and i can see them being endgame, although not 100% sure that will happen, WE CAN ONLY HOPE. So anyways, that's my take on it
I didn't like Haper after Sasha said that Amerie should take responsibility for her actions meaning she not only didn't tell them that she did in fact help create the map, she claimed to have nothing to do with it. I was like, "I'm so glad y'all dropped her because she needs waaayy better friends." And Sasha over here being mad that she got called out for probably CHEATING on her ex. Like...?
Okay- I absolutely love heartbreak high - like on my 9th rewatch love it- and I agree with your takes. I have to say that, even tho he is a bad person, Spider is my favourite character. He doesn’t seem as wishy washy as dusty; he is not just comic relief like ant; his flaws and misdeeds are actually accounted for unlike harper. I think he has really good motivations for his actions - especially as they are very in character. I think in season two he should either go through a redemption arc so he can actually deserve amerie without the dickish baggage or at least confront his hurt ego- both of which would continue his character while spicing it up. I do still love ca$h, Darren and Quinni (even if Darren was slightly aphobic at times) however I feel like spider is just a more complete and interesting character.
I don't know why you like him if he's a bad person, dusty is a bad person too. Just because spider is a potential love interest doesn't mean he can be redeemed just like that. He doesn't deserve amerie. Enemies to lovers is a toxic trope.
@@sparespare1146 I dint think I did my feelings justice with the verbalisation of my feelings. I personally love characters who are shit human beings. Not because of who they are, but who they were before they were dicks and who they could be after. I do understand the toxicity of enemies to lovers, however in this show, prior to the festival, it is very much so fitting with story. My opinions of characters are definitely more from the analytical perspective of a writer, but I do see where you are coming from with your opinions. But I do dislike dusty because he doesn't have any redeeming qualities (whereas the actual crush on amerie and moment of vulnerability imo make spider at least a little bit better). And spider spouting shit in anger during the game of stuck in the mud was horrific, and I agree with Ms Obah that they weren't the victims, so I think that it was a bad person move but a very consistent and fitting character move. Hence why he is my favourite, he is consistent, his little changes in character make sense and I truly believe he was better and he could become better, the foundations for a god character.

Thank you so much for making this!!! I haven't heard many talk about this show so I'm so glad I found this! Quinny was my absolute favorite character and my favorite part of the whole show. I really need more Quinny in my life. Honestly this show took some time to grow on me but I'm so glad I stuck with it. I almost stopped watching several times because I couldn't stand the back and forth with amerie and harper in the first couple episodes but I kept watching for Quinny and Darren. Also the actress that played Harper did a phenomenal job, If she was played by anyone else I don't think I would have been able to stand her
With the Malakai Harper Dusty hookup, Harper knew what it was like to be abandoned by Amerie when she needed her, so she wanted to be there for Malakai since Amerie wouldn't. I think it's hard to say who was in the wrong for the hookup since they were all drunk from the party. The discomfort you felt with Quinni and Sasha was Sasha infantilising Quinni, acting like Quinni couldn't make decisions for herself.
I see 100% what you mean about the Harper situation because it is quite hard to say! I guess her reasoning is understandable but still slightly confusing to justify logically why that's the best way to comfort him, you know? But what's logic when emotions are running high and you're far from sober. And also you're spot on about Quinni and Sasha!

The season 2 storyline for Spider was actually so good. He's not redeemed, but we understand why he is the way he is and we can see that there's actually a really sweet guy somewhere in there
tbh i liked the reality of it all bc, yeah, of course the characters make mistakes and also cross boundaries and are also uneducated sometimes, because they’re teenagers lol. honestly a lot of common complaints about the characters are the reasons i like the show. like darren’s reaction to cash not wanting to go further with him, i think that was a perfect representation of a problem rampant in queer spaces. my personal interpretation of spider’s character was that he’s deeply closeted and that’s why he had issues with amerie, and why there’s a lot of suspicious extra screen time of spider with his buddy ant. i think darren also makes closeted jokes about him multiple times throughout the show. i was REALLY shocked to see people shipping amerie with spider, because i thought this subtext was barely subtext. i want to rewatch cause idk if i’m imagining it, but i’m pretty sure that’s what his storyline is lol. i think the show is really honest and i’m excited to see if my spider and ant theory is correct
I found Amerie really annoying not going to lie. I was shocked when I came online and saw that she was mostly liked. 😂on a positive note, I’m also on the autism spectrum, and I adored quinnie! The best representation I’ve ever seen in a series of movie

I think it was pretty obvious harper was desperate to get in though, with all the crying and begging, and after what she just went through it made sense she probably wouldn't be able to form coherent explanations, not to say what she did after was okay

Harper was obviously CRYING and BEGGING her to let her in. And the only reason Amerie didn't let her in, was because she was to proud to admit that she was sleeping with some guy. It was so obvious, because she switched off the lights and hide and waited until Harper was gone. To say it in Ameries own words: "Own your shit!" And when your friend is crying for help, you should really drop your pride, and don't pretend to be not at home or asleep. What kind of friend is that? And then she is putting herself into the victim role at the beginning of the show, all the time. She really did mess up and now she is the victim? Harper being mad is so justified.

i agree with what you are saying (about the cassie vs amerie point) intention wise. amerie and harper intended for it to be a secret whereas lexi intended for it to be displayed. buuuut, i do think its pretty reckless to plaster such confidential information on a wall where if you could find it, who knows who else does down there to do whatever high school students do, you know?

I wish the show had talked a bit more about Darren's reaction to Cash not wanting to have sex, hopefully they will focus a bit more on it in season 2 but it just really rubbed me the wrong way. Darren was my favourite character up until they got so mad at Cash for not wanting to have sex with them. I totally get why they were that way and it fits their character to be so sex focused and seeking approval in that way but I wish that they had properly apologised to Cash for it and had more of a self-reflective moment beyond what happened with Quinni calling them out a bit and then finally accepting that they care for Cash more than they 'need' sex. If they had a scene or two where they really acknowledged they were in the wrong regardless of whether Cash was ace or not and properly apologised to him I would still call them my favourite character but for right now my favourite is Quinni (definitely not influenced by her being the best autism rep I have ever seen and me being autistic...)
You're not making things up or reading into things too much, malakai WAS sexually assaulted, and anyone who says he wasn't either isn't aware of how consent works (as in, in which situations you automatically cannot consent- being drunk, high, a minor (when in a relation with someone older, not 16 yo with a 17 yo and such), etc), or is under some horrid impression that men/guys can't be sexually assaulted, which... jesus christ, please work on that. I couldn't watch the entire show so I don't know if it ever gets properly addressed, but I unfortunately imagine in doesn't.
In general I just genuinely wish we could get a diverse and interesting high school show about gen z that doesn't feature sexual assault, doing hard drugs and alcohol, and similar dark topics- we have sex education, but even sex education doesnt have the autistic rep that this show does. I was so incredibly excited to finally watch a fun show with GOOD autistic queer rep (I followed chloe hayden before the show and knew shed rock it), only to be met with addressed and non-addressed sa, people doing ketamine in the bathroom (do hs kids do that??? is this just cultural disconnect because I'm not australian???), constant alcoholism and just SO much miscommunication (among other things). Call me boring, but I'm sick of having to try to sit thru *very* heavy shows about kids just to get queer and autistic rep of people my age on screen.
P.S. Sorry I ranted in your comments lol, this show just stabbed me repeatedly in a bad way and destroyed all my hopes for a fun time- hopefully someone eventually makes a compilation of quinni moments that I can have fun with rip

@@talarothfor the map, she had every right to be mad. amerie wrote down personal stuff about sasha and her relationships which was an invasion of her privacy and broke her trust. also, for the threesome thing, sasha was justified in her anger, harper and dusty literally took advantage of malakai after a traumatic event that left him vulnerable. this doesn’t excuse sasha’s behaviour towards quinni, but those examples you gave were pretty bad considering she was justifiably angry in both instances.
as much as i agree with what you said abt harper, i am so glad they did not make the stereotypical "pure" victim. because most victims of trauma do tend to get unreasonable, esp for what she went through at her age, towards a friend that knew how her father was. definitely explains why she was the way she was, and i hope they let her mature and heal in the 2nd season
i was so mad when harper and dusty hooked up with malakai (sorry if it’s wrong) while he was clearly not ok, like very drunk and upset over the police harassing him, when she herself is a victim and has been acting like THAT the whole season about consent and trauma was insane to me
not to say that the situations were comparable because obviously circumstances are different, but it still felt incredibly hypocritical of her
ok this isn't about heartbreak high but I totally agree with the fact that Lexi's play in euphoria was extremely fucked up and literally no one has admitted it, like everyone says they love that episode

I love heartbreak high sm AND I LOVE that someone is talking about the plot and doing character analysis :) I wanna talk about Spider, he's so PROBLEMATIC and overall a big bully. When I found out that he's got a massive crush on Amerie I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW how to feel, but OML THAT SCENE AT THE FESTIVAL was so bloody cute. In my opinion I think that was the only time Spider looked genuinely happy. Tbh I understand why Spider was salty towards Amerie after she kicked him out but THAT does not justify his mean comments and actions and it's so obvious he's still in love w her. What I hope to see in season 2 is his redemption arc, GET THAT PERSONALITY FIXED CUZ IT SUCKS, he needs to do a full 360 before he can even THINK about rizzing up Amerie. Spider has so much potential and i can see them being endgame, although not 100% sure that will happen, WE CAN ONLY HOPE. So anyways, that's my take on it

I didn't like Haper after Sasha said that Amerie should take responsibility for her actions meaning she not only didn't tell them that she did in fact help create the map, she claimed to have nothing to do with it. Okay- I absolutely love heartbreak high - like on my 9th rewatch love it- and I agree with your takes. I have to say that, even tho he is a bad person, Spider is my favourite character. He doesn’t seem as wishy washy as dusty; he is not just comic relief like ant; his flaws and misdeeds are actually accounted for unlike harper. I think he has really good motivations for his actions - especially as they are very in character. I think in season two he should either go through a redemption arc so he can actually deserve amerie without the dickish baggage or at least confront his hurt ego- both of which would continue his character while spicing it up.
I do still love ca$h, Darren and Quinni (even if Darren was slightly aphobic at times) however I feel like spider is just a more complete and interesting character.

@@sparespare1146 I dint think I did my feelings justice with the verbalisation of my feelings. I personally love characters who are shit human beings. Not because of who they are, but who they were before they were dicks and who they could be after. I do understand the toxicity of enemies to lovers, however in this show, prior to the festival, it is very much so fitting with story. My opinions of characters are definitely more from the analytical perspective of a writer, but I do see where you are coming from with your opinions.
But I do dislike dusty because he doesn't have any redeeming qualities (whereas the actual crush on amerie and moment of vulnerability imo make spider at least a little bit better). And spider spouting shit in anger during the game of stuck in the mud was horrific, and I agree with Ms Obah that they weren't the victims, so I think that it was a bad person move but a very consistent and fitting character move. Hence why he is my favourite, he is consistent, his little changes in character make sense and I truly believe he was better and he could become better, the foundations for a god character.

Thank you so much for making this!!! I haven't heard many talk about this show so I'm so glad I found this! Quinny was my absolute favorite character and my favorite part of the whole show. I really need more Quinny in my life. Honestly this show took some time to grow on me but I'm so glad I stuck with it. I almost stopped watching several times because I couldn't stand the back and forth with amerie and harper in the first couple episodes but I kept watching for Quinny and Darren. Also the actress that played Harper did a phenomenal job, If she was played by anyone else I don't think I would have been able to stand her
With the Malakai Harper Dusty hookup, Harper knew what it was like to be abandoned by Amerie when she needed her, so she wanted to be there for Malakai since Amerie wouldn't. I think it's hard to say who was in the wrong for the hookup since they were all drunk from the party.
The discomfort you felt with Quinni and Sasha was Sasha infantilising Quinni, acting like Quinni couldn't make decisions for herself.
I see 100% what you mean about the Harper situation because it is quite hard to say! I guess her reasoning is understandable but still slightly confusing to justify logically why that's the best way to comfort him, you know? But what's logic when emotions are running high and you're far from sober.

Loved this show. I 100% felt like dusty was the worst character as he was just a little irrelevant and never seemed to really think about his actions. I also felt that a few moments were a little cringe especially some of harpers outbursts.

The season 2 storyline for Spider was actually so good. He's not redeemed, but we understand why he is the way he is and we can see that there's actually a really sweet guy somewhere in there
tbh i liked the reality of it all bc, yeah, of course the characters make mistakes and also cross boundaries and are also uneducated sometimes, because they’re teenagers lol. honestly a lot of common complaints about the characters are the reasons i like the show. like darren’s reaction to cash not wanting to go further with him, i think that was a perfect representation of a problem rampant in queer spaces. my personal interpretation of spider’s character was that he’s deeply closeted and that’s why he had issues with amerie, and why there’s a lot of suspicious extra screen time of spider with his buddy ant. i think darren also makes closeted jokes about him multiple times throughout the show. i was REALLY shocked to see people shipping amerie with spider, because i thought this subtext was barely subtext. i want to rewatch cause idk if i’m imagining it, but i’m pretty sure that’s what his storyline is lol. i think the show is really honest and i’m excited to see if my spider and ant theory is correct

I find it a irresponsible to say Amerie was "..not hearing you (Harper) at the door...maybe she did hear her... didn't know she was in desperate need" She didn't know? Harper was obviously CRYING and BEGGING her to let her in. And the only reason Amerie didn't let her in, was because she was to proud to admit that she was sleeping with some guy. It was so obvious, because she switched off the lights and hide and waited until Harper was gone.
To say it in Ameries own words: "Own your shit!" And when your friend is crying for help, you should really drop your pride, and don't pretend to be not at home or asleep. What kind of friend is that?
