***Goodbye Uncle Tom is a “Shockumentary.”*** It’s a 1971 Big Budget Italian exploitation film that plays more like a parity documentary, than a film.
I think I say this in my review - but for anyone interested in watching the review, just letting you know. It’s called out in my review: Two “journalists” go back in time and interview “Elites of the World” as well as “common white folks” about their views on slavery. And in every way imaginable…they demean African Americans from beginning to end of the film with it ending in current day 1971 showing “Black upheavals” against whites in America. That’s the entirety of the film.
Just pinning this comment and underlining why I hated the film…yet also realize why it was created, and especially can appreciate its place in history and time.
This is way worse than Cannibal Holocaust in terms of brutality. I think it's a really well-made film and I can't necessarily say I enjoyed watching it, but I was fascinated and impressed (and disgusted) with how far they went. Sadly, a lot of what's in this film is historically accurate, which is terrifying.
That is VERY well said…agreed on all fronts. I’ve not seen Cannibal Holocaust but I find it hard to imagine anything more hard to watch than this film…
Like you, I knew nothing of the film and had not heard of it prior to your review. My suggestion would be for future reviews of controversial films to provide a clearer and slightly more detailed synopsis of the film, despite the shock and controversy. You can still talk about what the film contains, without going into gory detail. By the end of your review I still had no greater understanding about what the film was about.
Thanks for your POV on the review - to be fair, it’s an honest point. But also from my perspective, I simply didn’t want to get too deep into it.
It’s about slavery and often it “pokes fun” at the topic. It makes fun of another race of individuals all in sort of a “carefree” and very degrading fashion. Which was the point of the film to try and show the world at the time how horrible it all was. But it’s not done in a respectful or good way. The film comes off like “a joke” and it’s obviously no joking matter.
And honestly, I just didn’t want to get into the dehumanizing of all of it as a matter of how the film “pokes fun” at the topic.
But thank you for your feedback. Usually I get into the topic and overview quite well - this one was way harder for me to get into the details because it wasn’t fiction, it was very real unfortunately.
If you do watch it - you’ll know exactly what I mean.
All you really need to know is that it's a fictionalized documentary that's an elaborate scene-by-scene recreation of the American slave trade. It's a big budget Italian exploitation film from 1971 and comes with a strong "watch at your own risk."
@@beyondsourgrounds5602- well said. I just pinned a comment to the top of the comments section as perhaps I didn’t clearly articulate it well enough. Thanks for chiming in.
Oh please it’s a fantastic film and the mad Professor in it is just hilarious … I often watch it just for the giggle
The movie was banned in the United States when it was first released, and wasn't allowed to be played in movie theaters, because there was alot of controversial scenes that dipict the inhumane treatment of Black slaves, and the American govt was worried that the film would cause riots and unrest after Black viewers watced the movie
I can 100% see why. Thank you for the additional context.
The child pron is also illegal...
@@PercyTinglish - that is ANOTHER THING about this film that absolutely BLEW MY MIND!
I literally could not believe what the F*ck I was watching…
Thank you for calling that out as well…
Another film that was banned also Sam Fullers film "White Dog 1982" check that out🔥!
@@calebedwards3266 - I most certainly will. These seem worse than the “video nasties” banned in the U.K.
Blue Underground put Goodbye Uncle Tom out on DVD years ago, but nobody really talks about it for some reason. I think a lot of botique physical media collectors will be blind buying this film and sending themselves into cinematic culture shock in the near future lol. For other beautifully disturbing and controversial films I'd recommend Salo: The 120 Days of Sodom and Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer. And of course Cannibal Holocaust and the original I Spit On Your Grave are mandatory for any horror or exploitation fans that haven't seen them. All beautiful and thought provoking films that have deeper meaning and lasting impact, yet also quite uncomfortable and difficult watches.
I do own and have seen I spit on your Grave. And I’ve also had the other ones you’ve recommended said to me a few times before.
I was stunned by this one. The 4k and “from Blue Unnderground” is what led me to this purchase. They do great 4k transfers. I had zero idea what this about about and it was a blind buy and watch.
As I said in the vid…Holy shit…
I think what makes it so awful is you know it happened and to SO MANY humans in our past. Just sad.
Other exploitation films can be tough watches for sure like “I Spit on your Grave.” You know that stuff happens in life unfortunately.
But the whole slavery thing…just so happens to be a hot button topic here in the States due to our history. Touches a nerve for sure.
Thanks for weighing in with a great comment with great context.
Hope to see you around in future vids…
@@ungraduatedmedia Perhaps I should also suggest doing a bit of light research on the other titles before buying/watching. I've been collecting for more than half my lifetime and stay immersed in horror, cult, and genre cinema, but I can also imagine what it's like blind buying Goodbye Uncle Tom and watching with no context. In some ways that can actually make a film more impactful, but it's also good to know your own boundaries/tolerance when it comes to confrontational horror and exploitation films.
Goodbye Uncle Tom is unique from most exploitation cinema in that it's as beautifully crafted as it is audacious and the historical reality is exactly why I recommend it. While the filmmaker's intentions and ethics might be questionable, the film conveys the horrors and atrocities of slavery in a visceral way that no history book or documentary is capable of. It's definitely not my favorite film in Blue Underground's library, and I've seen most of them, but it's probably the only mondo film that's truly a "must watch."
@@beyondsourgrounds5602- that is VERY well said. Thank you for another great comment. I share your sediments completely.
As a newer physical media collector, particularly of boutique labels, A LOT of what I watch are blind watches. And I love doing so.
This just truly caught me off guard, but it was intended to do what it did…especially for its time.
So I completely get that it has its place…and as much as I hate it for what it is…I can also appreciate it as well for its purpose.
@@ungraduatedmedia That kind of nuanced reflection is exactly what we need more of in this hobby, and in this world. There are also films that I personally dislike or don't enjoy, but I recognize their cultural or historical value or artistic craftsmanship, likewise there are also movies that I know don't qualify as "good movies" but I love and enjoy them. Welcome to the world of physical media. What other labels/films have you been checking out?
@@beyondsourgrounds5602 I M a big time thinking and introspection type individual. Mix that with a love of movies and this is what you get 😉
I am loving it…and the rabbit holes go deep!
Bought a lot of Vinegar Syndrome. I went all in on them last year and amassed about 75% of their catalog. Clearly, buying that much that fast leaves me a long run to catch up to the finish line in watching them all. But I’m making my way through.
Outside of them I’m digging Umbrella right now and Second Sight. Obviously Arrow Video.
Radiance Films is another label that I own every release of. Nearly every film is a new discovery for me and I love what Fran and his team is doing there.
There are quite a few others I’m sprinkling in, but the world of physical media is far more vast than I imagined.
I was mostly a “mainstream movie” guy for the longest, but I’ve really grown to appreciate the art of creative story telling, even at a lower budget level.
So much good stuff out there and I’d say 80% of what I’m watching these days are blind buys.
The most terrifying part about this film is that it’s accurate. Most of the research for it came from primary sources and it shows.
On that note, I would love to see this same style be applied to depictions of the holocaust as well as death camps such as Treblinka and Sobibór. Given the rise of holocaust denial in the United States, it is necessary to show the horrors so that we can learn.
A Holocaust movie in the style of Goodbye Uncle Tom might 100% have the effect you hope for, but would definitely offend literally everyone (Holocaust deniers and moralists) and probably THE most controversial movie of all time, probably resulting in it's banning all around the globe.
Would be interesting tho
@@lutho7693 thats what we want.
As much as I loved Schindler’s List, it sanitized the holocaust imho. It never showed the medical experiments, the brothels, the einsatzgrupen or the absolute horrors of extermination.
The only film that comes close is Come and See and people praise that film.
@@uffu2490 Yes, but would you include Goodbye Uncle Tom's dark humor and ironic (but also beautiful) sound track? That's what buggs most people about the movie and actually offends them.
The ending is awesome...!!!!
Does it come in just bĺu-ray?
Comes in 4k or a bluray version
Do you know how many tracks are on the CD? I know the original score should be 18 if expanded and around 13 if not
I will find out for you when I return from my work travel this week. I’ll verify and get back to you by Thursday evening when I can personally check for you.
@@ungraduatedmediathank you so much! I appreciate all that you do; enjoy your days!
@@Thecatdrums3- there are 23 tracks on the CD. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.
A movie i hope to watch with my children one day.
Lololol 😂
It is a very quotable film. I still borrow the line: “Nwords are bought and sold everyday, but you have to pay your taxes” -German slavemaster speaking to the Italian Narrarators.
Hey what's buddy, just wanted to say great video and enjoyed your opinion and perspective about the movie and how it still holds in today's society.
Thanks for checking it out man! If you EVER watch this one…just prepare yourself!!! 😉
I came across this movie 15 years ago on UA-cam, and I’ve never forgotten it. THE most f’d up movie I’ve ever seen.
It’s one of those movies that you simply can’t explain unless you’ve seen it…thanks for chiming in.
I tried to explain it here in this vid / review but words just don’t do it justice…
I read a review once that I think said it best: what they’re showing you is exactly what happened, and the way you feel at the end is exactly how you would feel if you had to go back in time and actually see slavery first-hand.
It’s probably the most historically accurate slavery movie there is, but actually seeing it? It’s tough.
PS, I highly recommend you watch the Italian version if you haven’t yet. It’s almost a completely different movie, and in my opinion, a much better one (still has a lot of the gross stuff, though).
@@orangelazarus91- yeah I haven’t watched the Italian version but I started it and then went back to the American version. I did notice even how different the film starts…it begins with a scene that the American version has near the end.
@@ungraduatedmediaThe Italian version adds commentary and real life scenes from the 60s-70s and has sociologically and psychoanalytical commentary.
The movie was the most uncomfortable it made me 😂 more so then any other film despite the fact lots of things don’t disturb me. Serbian film and human centipede was juvenile and almost cartoonish in an over the top manner in my opinion but this take the cake.
@@CJ-fs1zr if I can stomach another watch I’ll check out the Italian version 😉
It's not repulsive. I really enjoyed it
I feel that your review was very respectable and responsible. You gave your opinion and if some of the people didn't like how or what you said, that is too bad. Keyboard warriors feel like they can say whatever they want. If they want to know more about the movie then they can buy it and watch it themselves. What you gave was more of a warning than a review. I can accept that. Thank you.
I appreciate that - the truth is I would have been too uncomfortable trying to give more details. I get what the Directors were trying to do but “Holy Hell….!” I don’t care what race you classify as this type of shit is just hard to see let alone talk about.
The most accurate depiction of those bad times
Five minutes in and still barely a word of substance.
Dear God, give the graphic warning and get the F on with it. We all know how depraved the real world was.
IT'S STILL THAT WAY!
I want a breakdown and review, not your verbose trigger warning.
Edit: 8 minutes now and still barely a thing, except it's about realistic portrayals of slavery and abuse.
I'll look it up elwhere. Sorry, i'm out.
Yup - I can be a bit of a rambler and I’ll concede to that point. I try to get to the point in my reviews as I know attention spans can be short.
But, part of my channels point is to “discuss perspective.” I’m not simply only about discussing the film.
Also - I’m not triggered by anything in life…at least I try not to be as I’ve done a lot of “inner work” on ego. I just felt this film review needed a bit more attention and background before I just “dove right in.”
I can never be all things for all people, but this channel will likely always lean more dialogue heavy. It’s just who I am.
Regardless- I do appreciate your opinion and feedback.
WHEN I 1ST SEEN THIS, I COULDNT BELIEVE MY EYES!👀
Hello, I'm new to your channel and I enjoyed your review. I have this movie on DVD, and I just received the Limited Ed. 4K version. I agree this film is hard to watch! On a side note... Check out the movies "Mandingo" & "Drum".
Thanks for watching and hoping to see you around in future vids! I’ve heard of Mandingo but not Drum…so that is a first. I’ll aim to check them out. Thanks for being here and dropping a recommendation 😉
Human being has the capacity to be cruel infinite times over.
Walk with God and seek salvation ye honosapien
GREAT LOOKING COLLECTION!
I sense that you feel more worried about offending someone than to explain more of the story. Slavery was bad, we get it. I will never feel shame because what others did back then. White guilt is really lame and i want to think that most of todays people are more smart and will not accept slavery again. Unfortunately it still exists and the irony is that it happens today in Africa!
I was not worried about offending someone. It was just truly hard for me to talk about from “my seat at the table” and from a completely different time than when all this went down. Not just the civil war but the continued fight for equality during the 60’s and 70’s. I wasnt born until 1980.
So my perspective is very limited and I said what I wanted and felt comfortable saying about it. Hopefully that can be understood.
I have zero guilt for what I didn’t contribute to. But I also recognize how awful it is. Today or back then.
My guilt, that I feel, is for humanity…we should be better. That was what I was trying to convey.
I don’t know if you’ve seen the film, but if you have then you’ll know exactly where I’m coming from. This film goes well beyond slavery as it “makes fun” of another race. It’s aweful, but effective for what its intended purpose was.
But thank you, for your comment, and perspective.
@@ungraduatedmedia Thank you for fast reply. It was well written and i wish you all the best.
@@mattbear6 Same to you my brother. I love engaging with my audience and always will. It’s really why I’m doing this…be well and hope to see you around in future vids.
Watch cannibal Holocaust too it’s made by Italian director and has beautiful soundtrack. It also has social commentary about journalistic integrity and colonialism/imperialism and they also try making a message about race. It’s nowhere as disturbing as goodbye Uncle Tom tho. I had low expectations watching cannibal Holocaust cause I thought it was just gore film but it does have messages 😂 even though I thought it was presented “in your face” and not slick like I get it the movie tryna make a message about colonialism and dehumanization about natives
Like you did, I have the same initial impression about cannibal holocaust. But if there is any “perspective” in it the director in it is trying to convey, then I will check it out. I don’t want to just write it off…
"movie yucky." Saved you 25 minutes. Seriously, what is the movie about? It could be a complex narrative, could be a random sequence of abuses or anything in between, i have no idea from this review.
It’s about making fun of African Americans in the worst possible ways. It’s a parity of sorts but tasteless and demeaning. That’s all the film is. If you’d watch it - you’d get what I’m trying to say. It’s extremely hard to talk about what this film is…
I get that watching my review of it may not convey completely what the film is - but after my watching it…that’s all that it is. Senseless ignorance meant to ignite a response.
It’s about making fun of slaves.
That’s it…that’s all the film does.
If that didn’t come through clear enough in my rants, I apologize.
But thank you for watching and sharing your feedback.
@@ungraduatedmedia ironic that my comment still applies to this response, with the exception of it not taking 25 minutes. Yeah, bad things happen.... And? I still don't even know what kind of movie this is. It could have a coherent narrative that runs throughout, it could be a sketch show where every five minutes you're watching different characters in different parts of the country at different times in history doing nasty things. You go on and on and on and on and on about the movie making you sad but don't say anything about the movie itself.
@@PercyTinglish- I get your point and it’s noted. But truly, and I’m saying this not from a place of spite, “words don’t do this film justice.”
It’s almost “indescribable” to me. And if you do check it out, you’ll likely get what I’m trying to say.
And without some verbalized attempt at explaining it, I would have no video…so I decided to try and made a video 😉
I also tried to write a pinned comment for anyone else that stumbles upon the review. So thank you for your feedback.
@@ungraduatedmedia fair enough. Some would say if you recognize that you can't describe it that making a video about it is folly, but that's your prerogative.
@@PercyTinglish - I do see you point and also value your opinion. And it is appreciated. I know I’ll never be all things for everyone here but I do very much want to be at the overall best I can be. So thank you. I always welcome all open and constructive feedback.
I liked the movie I thought it was good
This movie has the most unsettling dialogue out of any movie. It’s like it tapped into my subconscious in a disturbing way.
I can certainly feel you on that level. At first I thought it was just kinda joking…poking fun…all in bad ways…but then it just gets worse and worse and worse. Again, I get the point for doing this film…but….jeez 🫣
This was a very good, responsible review. When I saw SEVERAL UA-camrs weeks ago talking about this release & recommending it without even knowing what it was about…I just shook my head in disbelief. I said to myself these people are probably going to buy this thinking “oh this looks like a good ‘late night’ Cinemax type of movie” & find themselves horrified by the actual content of the movie. People are responsible for researching what they buy but a lot of people just go by new film release recommendations & this is one film that shouldn’t be a blind buy. Anyway, I’m glad you reviewed it so if anyone were curious as to wth this movie is about they’ll find your very on point review.
Thank you - TBH I did blind buy it and I will blind watch a lot of stuff. I’m especially into a lot of Boutique Labels and will often just purchase their stuff without much research.
Lesson learned…
I truly can’t see a reason I’ll ever watch this film again.
Thanks for stopping by and dropping a thoughtful comment and I’m glad you thought the review was good. Was not an easy one for me to do.
Hope to see you around in future vids…
You were too repetative and so im out
Africa Addio is another mondo film that is truely horrible, considering that most of the footage is real.
Wow - I don’t know if I could handle it. I can take a lot of things but treating other human beings like that as well as the holocaust…I just can’t begin to comprehend.
I can’t even stand seeing the mistreatment of animals let alone humans.
@@ungraduatedmedia
It’s much easier to see it on humans. That’s what gore sites are for.
I don’t know how much the black cast had to endure in this film, but I doubt they actually shoved a cork up that one slave’s ass. I just don’t think they were paid since the filmmakers were allowed to use them by the Haitian dictator at the time, so still a form of slavery went into the making of the film. Ironic.
