- Bayonet cap to Edison screw lamp adaptor brought from an on-line auction site. This adaptor has a 50% chance of incorrect polarity and therefore a massive risk of electric shock to the person installing either the adaptor of lamp (bulb).
Please note we are not manufacturing experts and this item may well have passed all British and European standards. The video highlights the risk to the consumer when fitting such items.

Thanks for the warning. Another problem with these cheap adapters is that the max. wattage is not imprinted on the adaptor itself. I bought a few off ebay a few years ago thinking that they were good for max 100W (no instructions or packaging). I used one with a 240V 100W incandescent bulb. Seemed ok for a while until I smelt burning plastic. The plastic insulation around the contact pins was melting. I checked the ebay listings for these adapters. Only 1 in 5 disclosed the max. wattage as 60W. Even if the purchaser is aware that it's good for max 60W, he/she may place it away in a draw, then someone else comes along later, assumes it's good for 100W, uses it and sets the house alight! This incident alerted me to the importance of having smoke detectors installed throughout the house and also being wary of purchasing unbranded electrical goods from China.
Most goods are from China tho . #gasprices
I had just ordered one of these from eBay, it was due in tomorrow. But I just thought I'd see if there was a video about them and yours was first on my list. You may have just saved my life.
Thanks for the message 👍
I use these adaptors, but I have always made sure that the adaptor goes onto the bulb before it goes into the light socket, which I think is the way some of them actually ask you to do that.
I am glad I have seen this video though as I never realised how lethal they could be.
Thank you so much, I purchased a fan light and was told I could use a converter. Thankfully, I wanted to find out if it would be safe before I purchased a converter. Needless to say, the fan was returned to the manufacturer. Thank you, I hate to think what could have happened if I had used one! Many thanks, guys.
Thanks for watching and the great comment 👍🏻
It is always a good idea to not touch the screw part either way. In sweden for example we do not have polarized plugs so for lamps with a normal plug you may have the actual plug the wrong way. The safest way is to just unplug the lamp before replacing the lamp, this will also help eliminate arcs on the contacts of the socket and the lamp. Arcs can shorten the life of those. Things like cieling lamps will have a special polarised plug but things like desk or floor lamps usually have normal plugs.
I just ordered some new lamps for my hall and they are E27 Edison so I was looking at replacing both the pendants but I came across these adapters, I was just about to buy when I thought, let's check UA-cam to see what they look like in situ only to find out i, or the next person who buys my home may die just from changing a bulb, Wow, I'm shocked. Thank you so much for posting and I'll some pendants.
Great video guys... Definitely not something that should be sold in the UK. TLC sell all kinds of adaptors like these.
This one looks safer, the screw thread is plastic and I imagine the extended shroud covers the exposed metal parts before they can become live www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/DT78.html
However this one looks just as dangerous www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/JABCESW.html
Very good point guys, a way round this would be to screw the adapter to the bulb before plugging in, but this is still by no means perfect.
And the thing that's most shocking is my local well know eletrical supplier has been selling these for some time.
Thanks for your detailed comment Gaz 👍
I use them all the time I always screw the adapter to the lamp before putting it into the socket just in case the polaterty is wrong
I was thinking that, but you still wouldn’t know when you twist the adapter in the bayonet if you get the polarity safely as you are still risking to touch a live part of the bulb.
Wow, never knew this and god is that an easy mistake to make. Thanks for this! I don't think anyone knows this and it's such a simple thing to happen.
GREAT video. Shows how you can be safe. I myself never take things like changing bulbs etc. lightly ----thanks for doing this guys!
12345678Jazmanjef thanks 👍
Some modern Edison screw lamp bases are shrouded, so polarity isn't as important as it used to be. The connection is usually only made once it's fully screwed in. In these "safe" lamp bases the threads are plastic and the contact connections are at the very bottom! Even touching the screw threads isn't usually a problem while screwing the bulb in.
Wow thanks for the enlightenment! I'm going to check the Ikea ones out!
i use one of them and i thought this when i first saw it, just very careful not to touch lol
That is absolute madness. Thank you for this video!
Thanks for the warning. I used a couple of these in my living room. I shall remove them.
Just as I suspected! Great demonstration!
I've seen better adaptors where the contact for the cap is at the bottom of the holder and does not touch the lamp until the last moment. Much better than the whole threaded part being connected. Also, some cheapo holders have the 'skirt' too short so that the top edge of the cap is still exposed when the lamp is fully home.
Superb, Lads. These are so easy to buy O/L seems a good boys- toy until...TY for pointing out the polarity dangers of this adaptor 👌
Thanks 👍
Brilliant video. You should get a prime time slot on BBC. You'd make a good team with Nicky Cambell. 😁
Hi.... we would love to👍. Thanks for the kind words Gaz 😁
Thanks guys. Another very informative video....
I am pretty sure that this item will get an CE marking without any problems. Nearly everywhere in Europe Plugs and sockets are not polarized and lamps with a flexible cord have also Edison light bulbs. So there is the exact same risk of getting an electric shock. Sometimes 1pol switches are used in such lamps. And as long as the UK is part of the EU you can to an German based certification company and get your CE marking to sell it in the hole EU.
Hi. Thanks for the detailed comment all the best and thanks for watching Gaz 👍
That's a good point, Simon. If mainland Europe (and the US?) all use ES fittings and non-polarised plugs on portable lamps, then don't they all suffer the same problem? What's the rate of accidents caused by these?
Thanks guys - I was just about to buy one! Not now 👍
Aside from your very good points in this video, I'm still surprised these fittings are allowed to be used in general. As you demonstrated at 3:37 you can easily stick your finger in the lamp holder and receive a shock. What happened to IP ratings??
Aren't you supposed to switch off the electricity of the house from the main switch from the electrical board before doing anything with electricity or am I missing something ?
Many thanks, I wasn't aware of this.
Thanks for commenting and watching
Judy curious - is it just as dangerous if you screw the globe into the adapter first then connect globe and adapter to the bayonet connection?
Explains why you cant by these just anywhere might of saved a few lives here👌👌👌here i was looking for one i see
On most of the new plastic LED light bulbs you can easily swap the caps over from B22 to E27 with just a small flat bladed screwdriver. It's not recommended for every body to attempt this but it is possible. I have done it several times.
True! I just watched plenty of videos of that. But will they they consume the whole 40-50-60W compared to just buying a brand new 5-10W LED bulb ?
I have had one of these in all my lights for over 2years… never had an issue
I was about to buy some until I found this video, thanks!
They have changed the design in some large retailers 👍🏻
@@GSHElectrical oh right, thanks for letting me know! Do you happen to know the name or product code of a safe one please?
I bought one of these from B&Q and it appears to be safely designed. The threaded part is plastic and the contact is at the bottom so the bulb has to be screwed almost all the way in before the screw makes contact. One issue though is whether these ES led lamps are designed to work with inverted polarity.
The lamp itself will work fine with either polarity because the supply is AC (alternating current). It is just the risk of accidental contact with any parts that are 'live' with respect to earth that is the dangerous bit.
Does the same problem exist for bayonet-to -scrrew adapters?
if you know how to test which is which like you guys have you can make sure which way round it should be. I have been trying to find a loop based ceiling fitting with ES screw for UK market (not a pendant type) to fit a screw fitting directly into it.. can't see one anywhere. Nothing like my bayonet type (pendant) bases anyway?
I'm not sure who would use these this way. I've always used them to change the globe end and then attached it to the fixture like any other globe. Then hitting is live when your changing it over. I feel like these warnings are for those people who are below normal intelligence. I mean it's electrical. You're supposed to be careful regardless. You should not put globes in lights that are turned on anyway. I've used these and would again because they save you making larger changes and allow you to use your lights. You literally only need to be generally concerned, and you'll be safe enough to ensure no issues. I mean who touches the metal parts of a globe at any point ever?
Well, I never knew that. Thanks for the heads up on this. Great job guys.
Nasty stuff!!!!
How you doing Dan, it's a shame Gaz didn't get you in for a ramble before you set off on your travels... Would have been a great watch 👍
@@ashmanelectricalservices4318 I'm good cheers Alvin. How about you? I would have loved to..... I can ramble for England. Maybe Gaz fancies a Skype call one day?????
Wow! Thanks for that info lads. This video really has been some help!👍
I hope is how to spell your name
Jo
Thanks you and my mentor show me a lesson on the screw and bayonet
I'm willing to said I'm installed of this in by a home
and not test for this dangerous shocking
I'm back to the client to make sure
Thanks you a ferry best trainer
Some times I'm lost to do Sam thing stupid or forget and I running back to your video and get a idea
Thanks my Mentor
Hi. Thanks for commenting and watching Gaz and Joe 👍
Modern light fixtures don't use screw in light bulbs anymore especially in ireland. You can't even really buy them any more🤣💡
It totally depends on the steps of doing it. If first screw the adopter and then insert the bulb to bayonet holder, it will be no issue.
So what could you use for the earth connection on the voltage tester if testing certain equipment?
NO one in there right mind would connect the adapters in the light fitting first, you would screw it on to the lamp and then connect it to the fitting, thats why they get away with selling these adapters But the potential danger still needs pointing out you should have mention the correct way in using these adapters in a safe way but still not recommending them
Hi. Thanks for your comment this adaptor came with no instructions for the user... all the best Gaz 👍
I disagree totally, once installed in a ceiling rose pendant the very next time the lamp 'blows' Mr or Mrs Jo public will just change the lamp, its only by the will of God they have switched off at the switch!
Wouldn't turning the light off at its switch be enough? We were always taught never to change a light globe with the socket live. And we grew up with bayonet globes.
Wouldnt you have the power off when screwing in the adaptor, assuming if it is the wrong way round the bulb wouldn't work, so assume you would the turn the power off and change the bayonet fitting the other way round?
Turn the mains off before you change the light bulb.
I remember learing this in school over 20 years ago.
I don’t understand how these are ce certified. Surely these are the basic tests and scenarios that should be carried out during testing?
hi just come across this video. i have 2 toilets that use those 2 different connector, i want to change 1 of them to save the hassle. is e27 to b22 adaptor much safer?
does the same issue/risk exist if it is the other way around ie the bulb you have is bayonet and the adapter is screw/edison?
It’s finally just sunk in 🙈 cheers
Great video......... what about the revers with an Edison Screw to Bayonet Cap Lamp Adaptor ?
Bayonet lamps have no polarity 👍🏻
Presumably one that works the other way round would be fine?
I could of fallen foul of this issue as the product I needed is scew type and needed to use an adaptor. Now I know I will screw adaptor onto globe first then filt to bayonet fitting
I need one the other way around using a UK bulb b15 bulb in Germany so I’ll be fine right?😄
£1 from Ikea😳
For two, it's also safer as the screw cap only makes electrical contact when its nearly fully inserted, this along with the extended plastic shroud make it considerable safer. goughlui.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/20150726-2110-2543-1024x1008.jpg
Now that is a brilliant vid.....well done boys....a lot of food for thought......they should be banned especially with all the diyers who think they are sparkys about......
Good video and good warning 👍
Good job guys..was thinking about purchasing one of these. Not any more. 👍
I bought a WiFi bulb camera but have bayonet fitting wud one these be ok on that.mi dnt no what wattage it is tho doesn't say
I heard that the British Standard was changed so that you can't touch the outer case of the lamp when screwing in. Is there any thruth in this?
I'm a little confused but are you talking about the potential risk only when an adapter with Type B connect on a lamp holder side is used with a Type E bulb? Using E27 to E14 or E14 to E27 adapter has no risk, doesn't it? this is because the adaptor doesn't reverse the line and the neutral terminals.
50/50 chance of dying simply by not knowing there is a correct polarity? Jesus Christ, that's frightening guys.
Sure is 😮
As a side to this, l had a three lampholder pendent fitting, one of the lampholders was wired wrong polarityThese were Small ES .Screwing in all of the lamps made the whole fitting not work,LED lamps are polarity dependant.Try this as an experiment.
Hi, was wondering if you could help me please?
I’ve moved into a property which all the light bulbs had been removed, I bought all bayonet style bulbs as from a first look at the light fitting that’s how it appeared however when I’ve gone to put the bulb in there’s no way you can twist the bulb once it’s in place? The groves where you’d normally twist the bulb the groves are just straight up and not in the usual upside down L shape? I hope that makes sense, I just have no idea what bulbs I should be getting!
I hope you can help me!
Am I right to assume going the other way (converter for B22 Bayonet Bulb to E27 screw socket) will be ok? Btw, IKEA still sell the ones you are warning about (as of Dec 2020), maybe someone should get in touch with them!!
Thanks for the eye-opening video. I won't buy one!
What's the solution if you want to start using edison in a bayonet lampholder?
Do you simply replace the lampholder, and if so, how should one connect the wires?
I've been trying to find a video on that with no luck :(
I would assume that you're meant to install the adapter to the bulb, then the whole assembly into the bayonet cap, and remove the whole assembly when disconnecting?
Hi. I am sure that’s what they want you to do.... no instructions however... and would a home owner do it that way many months or years later when the lamp blows. Thanks for commenting Gaz 👍
What does that tell you about Edison Screw...🤔
thanks.
Thank you for this I literally could of electrocuted myself if I didn’t know this!
HolyPaalooza 🦾
I just got a couple of these (e14 to b22) with some smart bulbs from heyimhome.co.uk
Apart from being inherently flawed, they trip my fuses when installed, even without the bulbs installed. One of them welded itself to the socket when I put it in with the switch on. It didn't take a lot to get it out, but it pulled itself apart in the process.
Connect the adapter to Bulb, then into the mains... easy fix?
And how will every that replaces the lamp have those instructions…?
Thank you guys, very interesting and useful information.
Thanks 👍🏻
Would it be safe to screw the bulb into the screw adaptor then push it into the bayonet fitting
.
Would a tenant or customer know this?
HELLO LADS
I THOUGHT EVERYONE KNEW ABOUT THIS
I BUILD FAIRGROUND LIGHTS AT 60V OVER 110V IN S/P AND ALWAYS MAKE SURE MY NEUTRALS COME OUT ON THREADED SIDE
I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS OBVIOUS
SO IF ANYONE IS THAT STUPID TO PUT FINGER IN THE LAMP SOCKET THEY WILL ONLY HAVE 60 V AT LAMP HOLDER
240V IS FAR TO HIGH VOLTAGE FOR MODERN DAY LIGHTING THANKS FOR SHARING
Should you not at least switch off when changing bulbs?
If the lamp had failed how would you know you have turned it off…?
I've just ordered one on Amazon!! I'm living in Spain and it's coming from UK??
Nice video
🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌👀🧨😁
Thanks. Didn't know this.
What if you turn off the power supply while installing the bulb
Could hardly believe some idiot came up with these things when I found them a while ago maybe trading standards could get them of the market
You make sure the power is off before you screw the bulb in.
What if the lamp has failed and the switching is 2 way or 2 way and intermediate
Cant you just turn off the power switch before screwing it in?
That’s why you turn off the light before you change the lightbulb 💡
If the lamp has failed how do you know it is off 🤔
@@GSHElectrical Because if you’ve been in place for while you know when the light switches on and off
@@GSHElectrical if your light fitting and more than one lightbulb you know when it’s off
@@GSHElectrical And if it was more than one light fitting on one light switch do you know when your lights off
You can buy these in Ikea
Ikea aren't stupid they've come up with a safer design by using a plastic thread and only making contact with the base of the thread (when the lamp is nearly fully tightened), they've also extended the shroud to make electrocution by the method illustrated in this video impossible. This is just another example of the shoddy goods you can buy from eBay. Here's a photo of the inside of the Ikea adapter - a much safer product. goughlui.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/20150726-2110-2543-1024x1008.jpg
Ed Cooper thanks for this
When screwed in is the thread of the bulb still exposed? Because I struggle to see the issue if it is no longer exposed.
If you were to screw it in the way you guys are, of course that is horrendously dangerous, and people need to know about the dangers.
However, if you were to screw the bulb in first then attach the adapter to the fitting it should be fine?
RISK 🤦♂️
Thanks for replying, even with the facepalm. I didn't think that would still be risky, regardless.. after doing a little more searching I discovered that Ikea's adapters should be totally safe to use.
I had no interest in Ebay adapters, as I don't trust random unvouched for companies with electronics whatsoever.
Thanks for the video though.. as before it, I had no idea this was a factor at all.
Thanks for both comments and watching. Gaz 👍
Why not ban Edison screw cap entirely?
What about Edison to Bayonet would this be the same? asking for a friend :P - no seriously I had no idea these things existed
On a bayonet lamps the cap is isolated from the electrical contacts, though I'd avoid touching it whatever as I'm not sure you can exactly call it fully/safety isolated.
Sorry , I don’t get it. The glass is a non conductor. Even if installed incorrectly the glass wil, be safe to touch
You might touch the metal screw cap! And if it is connected to live, you're im danger.
Is e14 to e27 safe?
Yep 👍
@@GSHElectrical thank you 😀
But why not screw the bulb in the adaptor first, this converts the bulb in a bayonette type and then treat it like a bayonet bulb.
Yes i agree but Anyone has to be super dumb to be be touching the side screws of e27 connector.
Given how easy life these adaptors make i will never stop using them.
Simple solution is that you screw in the adaptor in bulb first then you attach the adaptor to the female bulb fitting in the wall or lamp. So problem solved, no contact with the metal.
Would you pleas sent it to my mother in law
Well both light bulb fittings are "dangerous", because if you remove the bulb, then lick your fingers and touch the exposed live contact, you'll get a shock. But that would be your own stupid fault, just like if you inserted a blank adapter instead of first securely attaching it to the bulb so that the metal screw part is protected by the extended plastic shroud.
You’re expecting everyone to follow this? That is why industry has safety standards to cover the masses! They’re dangerous and Edison bulbs are worse than bayonet but Europe wants to be global dominant power and everyone must follow their rules even if they’re unsafe.
Hi Boys......just seen that IKEA and Screwfix are selling these.......not good...
Shocking 🤦♂️
It Will be......
The Ikea ones are actually safe.
Guys so what if you just switch the light of before you insert the fitting and swith it back on once your done sorry to sound stupid lol
Hi. The light didn’t come with an consumer instructions so if it was fitted as stated first time would the person replacing the lamp months or years later understand what to do 🤔. Thanks for commenting and watching Gaz
