Just blew my mind. Did not realize how easily it was thank you so

I know how to use a map and compass. I started judging you and saying to myself he is going to mess some folks up by traveling south and not explaining the direction of the compass face. I was wrong and you did an excellent job. Thanks

He trains the royal guard on how to properly use a compass and get bearings so I'd be surprised if he messed anything up lol

This guy teaches navigation to special forces and mountain rescue teams. I think he knows what he is talking about!

Really clearly advice /really well explained -other than, first aligning the maps Grid North to the compass Magnetic North...

At present the difference between magnetic north and grid north in the UK is minimal, and actually zero in many places. The bearing you take from the map will be close enough without having to worry too much about magnetic variation. Plus, for people just starting out in navigation it's another factor that can complicate the learning.

There is a vital bit of info missing!! Absolutely vital that you make sure the orientating lines are parallel AND the orientating line arrow points to grid North otherwise you may be 180 degrees out!!

+Pete Mitchell So true. All of the videos I have seen always tell you to make the lines are parallel (compass and median lines), however, none of them specify that the red box(orienting arrow) needs to face north according to the map. I think the biggest piece of info missing is not discussing declination though.

Yep. It's very easy to miss that point and disaster follows.

do the red line and the black lines have to face a certain way? like red needs to face north, black south?

Very good point. When you line up the compass orienting lines with the meridian lines on the map, compass north _must_ point to map north which is usually top of the map.

Thank you very much, this was extremely helpful for my duke of Ed award

    No mention about declination.

What about correction for magnetic north/grid north?

You should already know that if you are watching a video on finding a bearing on a map. Not being mean just saying this is like another step and then triangulation and so on.
