This is great, thank you! I will also be using crushed red lava rock, filtered between 1/4" and 1/6"(ish, I have to drill holes for my filters) along with the coarse sand. I've got my sledgehammer ready wish me luck! Lava Rock is incredibly cheap, I sterilize it by pressure cooking it, lay it out on towels to dry. It's really good for drainage and easier for me to get than big bags of coarse sand.

This is great information, i usually see most nurseries plant succulents only in soil and even the one we receive online (we see soil on roots) not sure how they grow so well. Hi. I was desperately trying to look for some answers from your videos because even though so far my succulents had been doing okay in this intense heat till the humidity increased and then I had a few casualties. I realised that some of the succulents are not planted in a well draining soil. So will it be okay if I repot these now because when monsoons arrive the humidity becomes a real problem. These are mostly kalanchoes, sedums and ghost plant which are doing quite well. I’ll appreciate your expert help.
yes yes if the temperatures are not very high go ahead and repot….soil has to be well draining yes succulents will do well for sometime but in long run if the soil isn’t well draining it creates problems
thank you so much 😊 yes I try my best to collect high quality soil from my local nursery...I always keep a eye on them when they fill the sack so that they don’t add rocks 😂😂 to weigh it more
that’s is too much temperature I would advice don’t do any repotting now wait until temperatures get better. watering the thumb rule remains same when ever the soil dries completely if it’s dries completely in 3-4 days water if it take 10 days to dry completely then water if you have doubt wait an extra day and then water ....remember under watering is much better than overwatering ...watering completely depends on when you soil dries 😊
Sorry for bombing this comments section. I see that aquarium sand is basically crushed marble granules that resembles sugar, will it work? Or would washed river sand be better? Thanks for answering all my queries promptly so far 👍🏼
Hey no worries at all please feel free to ask questions 😊… The issue with river sand it’s very fine … it usually gets compact with garden soil mostly but u can try just to experiment with a small batch and see … yes I I Know about crushed marble granules you talking about I have seen that
I’m confused about garden soil. I’m assuming you don’t mean soil out in my yard. I’m thinking you mean, soil you buy for flower beds outside from a garden center and not potting mix out of a bag? I’ve never bought soil that wasn’t potting mix. Is it different than top soil or is it the same? I’m also thinking topsoil might be finer and we don’t want the finer stuff. And this is fine for indoor plants? Thanks for the best channel.
Hi Kelly thanks for watching 😊.. yes it’s bit confusing when it’s come to soil ….so let’s say you can refer my soil ( which I refer as garden soil ) as soil you would find in your yard …I don’t buy soil … I gather it from outdoors when there’s some work going on they pile up all the soil from beneath the ground ..that’s what I collect…. I know what you referring to the potting mix or the soil in the gardening store …no this is just soil from earth nothing mixed …. the soil or potting mix that we receive at garden centre is more likely a pre mixed soil with other stuff like cocopeat, fertiliser etc …maybe it’s good for other plants but most likely not ok for succulents.. yes the fine soil that falls of the filtering can be used for foliage plants ,flowering plants ,veggies ,herbs, seedlings etc as this is gonna be further mixed with cocopeat hence it getting compact is rare …
Just made this mix and repotted my Haworthia. Even though I added 4 parts sand and 1 part soil (80:20) after sieving, it isn't as red and dense. Do I need to add more soil? The mixture is super-fast draining and smells earthy.
Can I use construction sand that's obtained from river? We get black construction sand here. Is it fine to wash and dry the sand before using it? of course, I'll be running it through a sieve to filter out fine dust.
this is from my local aquarium shop unfortunately they don’t have any brand as such ..worse of all it’s never the same it all depends on the stock but I ensure that it’s fine …lucky it always slightly larger granules
They sell it at Walmart Jennifer in the Fish Department. They have all different colors of sand that so pretty when you mix it in with the potting soil! I think it's like 4 or 5 💵 for a pretty good size bag! They do sell aquarium sand at the dollar store & Dollar General, but it's a lot smaller bad. Otherwise you can go to pet stores and find it there, but it will be more expensive if course. Hope that helps have a great weekend

@@LushGardenerwow quick response!!! I appreciate it.. hmm one last thing, on the mix.i have substrate soil mix for cactus and suculents.. ( composed of pine barks, silica sand, mixture of quality peat, volcanic clay) and il.plan to mixed it with perlite.. so my question is it okay with that? Without using aquarium sand? Still i need to look for that sand if i have to.. thanks you
you can try the soil test method i have the link in the description ...we need to ensure the soil dries faster ...because m not sure about how long will peat take to dry ..at the end of the day you need to have a mix that tends to be compelty bone dry on the 3 or max 4 th day ..yes as there is sand in the pre mix dontadd more sand then
And also im in a country with 4 seasons..😑.. now its autumn..cold season coming soon.. so is the soil i have is okay? Or i look for aquarium or builder sand?... hmm i also used plastic pots.. is ceramic better?

yes but for people from dry environment…not for ppl from costal area or high humidity regions..as cinder retains slight moisture ..in high humidity regions it can cause issue ….this is what I have heard from others ..I haven’t personally used cinder but for people from Delhi using only cinder has worked wonders 😊🪴
in any local aquarium shop just ensure it’s slightly bigger granular something like sugar size granules Morang sand is the brown river sand I believe which they used for construction…the issue with river sand is it’s very fine …so you want to add pumice or perlite along with it and 10 percent filtered garden soil ….as the sand is very fine there is a chance it might get compact when mixed with too much garden soil
this was picked up from an construction site unfortunately this isn't available ...but if you go to any local aquarium shop you can ask for aquarium sand you just need to check how granular ( the sand granules need to be size of sugar granules ) it is if its fine dont use ..if you don't find check this link on amazon you can purchase it from there amzn.to/3rpsIk4
yes if your not from a coastal area or a high humid environment you can use cinder but then don't mix soil .. cinder and soil don't go well together ...it will cinder based soiless media
@@LushGardener soo wht shall i use instead of soil with cinder? I live in Delhi (India) not coastal or humid area but temperature goes to 45-50°C during summer
yes cinder can be used for Delhi ….I don’t have any hands on experience ..but one of my friend has been using it ..I will ask him to comment here so you can get a fair idea as he is also from Delhi ….but during summer you will need to grow them indoor under a grow light as they won’t survive that high temp unfortunately 😒… I will ask him to share his growing media

@@zippyhoodcinder can be used in two ways for succulents. 1) cinder mixed with leaf mould and fungicide 2) 100% cinder with slow release fertiliser (I haven't tried it personally yet, but I'll try). 3) A mix of cinder and pumice with leaf mold and some micronutrients. I have used #3 and 1. 1 is too draining, #3 looks like good consistency and retains some moisture as well. I have the contact for the guy in Delhi who can supply you all this, if you want.
first keep the succulent away from other plants ...use some dry cinnamon powder a pinch of it and after 30 mins use a soft make up brush and clean it off ..what is your soil mix
because succulents do not need a very organic soil.. apart from that succulents tend to go dormant in different seasons as per your environment. For example, Echeverría will be going dormant in winters so it does not require any fertilisers. If your soil has compost , it is going to be sitting in the pot, the succulent will not be using any of those nutrients. When there is excess nutrients in the pot, it will damage the succulent apart from that it is going to increase the risk of fungus or mold and like in your case, mealy bugs, and compost can cause mealy bugs or pest issues in succulents. That is why I don’t use both … succulents need poor nutrient soil
I got aquarium same from a local shop but it doesn't have big granules like you have shown. It's not fine like beach sand but little more granular than that.. shall I still use it?
cinder is good for dry climate like north part of India Delhi and all …. only cinder is enough nothing required…. costal area avoid Asit retains moisture
Thank you very much sir. This video have learned me about the real well drained potting mix for the succulents. But how much nutrition will the plant get from that much soil. I have enough doubts about how much nutrition will be retained in that small amount of soil and for how long.
thank you so much for watching sir …..it’s been couple of years I stopped adding fertiliser or any nutrients….during the growing season once in a while I add pond water or aquarium water that too once in 2 months only growing season ….so far I haven’t had any issue related with nutrient’s for example I didn’t see any succulent being unhealthy due to lack of nutrients ..succulents prefer very lean nutrient soil just like cactus hence I tried to create a soil mix that resembles a lot like arid mountain soil ……. succulents in nature grow between rocks or cracks of rocks with very minimal soil 😊 so far things have been good 😊
I need this... As I have received some of the succulent online today.... Hope I will make them survive.. If u have any further tip plz do share.... Also loved ur diy watering box... Plz share how u have made this. 🙏
@@LushGardener I have killed most of the succulents I received... Dnt know but I guess the hot n humid weather was the main culprit... Cz it was damn hot here in odisha when I repotted those bareroot succulents.
HI ....Fertilizer is not very important...i personally don't use any ...but in case you want to use ...it has to be very very less and only during the growing season like currently echeveria is in growing season ( summer ) so you can add little seaweed solution.. but add only 2-3 drops of seaweed in one liter water ...but if the temp is too high and its very hot don't add it ..it will damage them
Hey... I have just purchased some succulents from a nursery, they soil is moist to the touch and that thick nursery soil you have mentioned in another video, can u please advise as to when I should re pot and water..
@@LushGardener thanks a lot, I will do this, it’s very hot here in Rajasthan and my succulents are drying out totally within 5 days, I’m having to water them.. is that ok...
@@ambikasolanki497 yes if your soil is drying completely do water them ... if any doubt skip one day and then water don’t let the soil remain dry for too long as your climate is too hot .... long period of dryness can lead to dry rot so keep an eye all the best 😊
Mam compost will be highly nutrient and it will weaken the succulent….apart from that if the succulent is dormant adding compost can be risky….as dormant succulents don’t need fertiliser or nutrients….😢 During summers majority of succulents will go dormant … Apart this compost can also increase the activity of mealy bugs in succulents and mould or fungal growth as succulents don’t take up so much nutrients from soil….compost will also retain moisture 👍🏼
Hi. I am using this type of big size coarse sand. I felt that it drains fast but at the same time it takes much time to evaporate the water from the soil than normal garden soil. What do u think about that?
what container are you using what material and what the depth …coarse sand will look slightly wet but it doesn’t hold a lot of moisture …it’s enough for the succulent to have a quick drink …what are you using other material in the potting mix besides sand
ok …yes plastic pot and that little vermicompost does retain slight moisture…how many days does it take for the soil to be completely dry ….but only normal garden soil will be heavy for succulent…the issue with only normal soil it might look dry but it hold more moisture beneath …
Am not getting the aquarium soil that u r mentioning here. I see brown ball kind of soil from aquarium shop as aquarium soil. By any chance do u sell succulent soil.can we add cow dung in my succulent soil mix . my plants are getting elongated even if it is on direct or shade

Hi LG I saw in a video about how good Cinder is for growing succulents. First of all what is Cinder? What are your thoughts about using cinder as potting media?
cinder is good as it’s very porous and lose ....however I have never used cinder it .....very difficult to get the pure cinder and it’s slightly expensive .... there are a lot of sellers who sell cinder online these days but I doubt how authentic it is ...because you actually can’t see it in person it’s all based on pictures cinder basically are small pieces of partly burnt coal or wood and other fragments of rocks it’s depends at times you might find cinder in black colour sometimes reddish ....it’s a byproduct of coal mines ideally it’s said that cinder acts as pest repellent but recently someone using cinder shared a pic of his succulent completely infested with mealy bugs. That’s why I said I doubt the authenticity of what’s being sold online 😊
You’re a thoughtful rockstar, thank you so much for sharing your hard lessons learned and saving some succulents avoidable misery! You referenced filtering your garden soil to separate and keep the finest garden soil out of your intended mixture. Could you share about how many mm the little holes were in the disposable pot you used was and how many mm the holes were in the sifter was that you used second? Thanks again for everything!!
hi will check and let you know ☺️.. the pot filtering can be skipped if you purchase soil online …I pick up soil from the ground hence lot of larger rocks
@@LushGardener Of course. I purchased the soil for succulents from the local hardware store but I assume during shipping and handling, there was a lot of fine dirt/dust. After transplanting, the succulents were great for a while but as they got bigger and needed more accessible water, I saw the soil getting compacted and the plants getting under watered followed by root rot occurring at the bottom of the pot. When I filtered out the fine dust, used the sand, pebbles, and perlite, the little succulents responded beautifully. I’d like to do the big plants now, but would rather not torture them in the learning process or lose them all together. I’m also curious what that fine dust is good for as I’d hate to waste it but know better than to just throw it into the next empty pot I find. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply previously!
Is it necessary to use red soil for succulent or any kind of soil I can use??? because I live in Delhi NCR and here very difficult to find out red soil... I have to purchase from nursery 😅😅😅😅
no no plz dont worry what ever soil you get you can use... only red soil not necessary .. but ensure there is no cow dung or compost added its should be just plain soil that's enough..in south we find this soil everywhere whether we take it from ground or we buy from nursery its the same red soil :) so i used it :) ...as i pick soil from in and around my area i don't buy it
@@LushGardener ok and one more thing ...what is your opinion about cinder now a days people promoting cinder I watch many videos people said if you want to save your succulent you should use cinder or buy succulent potting mix although I see your plants looks healthy but I just curious to know what experts advice for cinder.🙂🙂..... thank you for advice 😊😊
Normal soil can be added with sand If sand is not available use either perlite or pumice something gritty only normal soil will get compact and will be heavy for the succulent roots You can use perlite or pumice or vermiculite or all three mixed with normal soil

I don’t understand why soil mixes are so complicated. I’ve tried pre mixed succulent mix and tried the recommended mix recipes online and yet it’s still so hard to get the right mix that works???? It shouldn’t be so complex????
yes I know it’s very tricky….and the difficult part is one must amend the soil according to the environment but yea once you have the right type of mix growing succulent will be very easy but get the mix right is the biggest test …. I think it’s complicated cause there isn’t like the right or correct mix and in nature succulents grow in a very mountainous soil which is hard to find hence all the hassle 🙁
@@LushGardener thanks for your reply. I feel so much better hearing you say it can be tricky because all the advice on the internet seems to say their mix is a sure success. I guess I just need to keep trying until I find the right one for my particular environment.
My friend give me peat moss soil mix (not sure with that mix but on pack written Material: Coarse peat moss texture. Peat moss is the dark brown fibrous product of sphagnum moss and commonly used for potting mix media). It’s not drainage well and my succulents die 😢 so they said i need to mix with perlite/ pumice/ vermiculite. Still confuse
no no avoid it completely..cocopeat,peat moss is good for foliage plants..for some people it does work who are from very very dry environment plus they use very little and a lot more gritty material..to be on safer side dont use it …if the soil mix bit draining that’s a big red flag …this will not dry fast as well very dangerous for succulents…never use vermiculite…it’s is another material that hold moisture …vermiculite is best for seedlings nit succulents ..
you can use sand but mix some garden soil ....u can repot if the temperature are within 33-34 degrees.....only repot echeveria don’t repot others as only echeveria is in growing period now don’t repot dormant succulents
You will find aquarium sand online as well as in your local aquarium shop....I would suggest local shop will be much better ....fertiliser is not very important They will do just fine without it ( most of the succulent varieties are currently dormant so anyways we don’t need to add any fertiliser to them ) ....however my next video will be on fertiliser it will make things much clear .....charcoal is optional
In the local nurseries ive noticed haworthias r planted in more clumpy soil mix, ive never actually seen well drainihg, well aerated soil mix as urs .is it bcz it more expensive?
yes mam the homemade mix we make turns out expensive we have few plants compared to nursery and we don’t realise while making in small batches but if you make a bigger batch our mix is very expensive … apart from this most of these plants we see is usually keeps moving so cocopeat is less expensive for them and easy to transport plants as it light …. apart from this succulents would die immediately in cocopeat it takes couple of months before the signs of problems start and to be honest before the plants starts getting issue it’s probably reached to someone’s house by then and then after getting home maybe in few months the succulents starts to deteriorate

Will this mix be suitable for plants kept indoors / window sill?

This is great information, i usually see most nurseries plant succulents only in soil and even the one we receive online (we see soil on roots) not sure how they grow so well. I am using premium mixes but definitely experiment with this one.
Also please add video on frequency of watering, sunlight for this type of soil and what kind of liquid fertilizer to use.
Succulents will do well in that mix for short term …but in long run the issue happens
Brilliant Idea 🎉

Thanks for the details video on soil mix...can I change the soil mix now(delhi temp near 40°)?when is the best time to water sacculants in summer?
that’s is too much temperature I would advice don’t do any repotting now wait until temperatures get better.
watering the thumb rule remains same when ever the soil dries completely if it’s dries completely in 3-4 days water if it take 10 days to dry completely then water if you have doubt wait an extra day and then water ....remember under watering is much better than overwatering ...watering completely depends on when you soil dries 😊

Sorry for bombing this comments section. I see that aquarium sand is basically crushed marble granules that resembles sugar, will it work? Or would washed river sand be better? Thanks for answering all my queries promptly so far 👍🏼
Hey no worries at all please feel free to ask questions 😊…
The issue with river sand it’s very fine … it usually gets compact with garden soil mostly but u can try just to experiment with a small batch and see … yes I I Know about crushed marble granules you talking about I have seen that
I’m confused about garden soil.
Can I use the same mix for cacti too?
most probably yes unfortunately I don’t grow cacti so not sure …but yea as far I know they prefer very sandy gritty soil too

Insted of soil can we use crushed drick of 3mm to 5mm size.. ?
And left over material after filtration of construction sand of 2 mm to 5mm?
Just made this mix and repotted my Haworthia. Even though I added 4 parts sand and 1 part soil (80:20) after sieving, it isn't as red and dense. Do I need to add more soil? The mixture is super-fast draining and smells earthy.
Yes if you feel it’s less add some more but sieve and use and also check after the soil dries how is the texture… it’s shouldn’t get compact
Thank you, it was very informative!

Can I use construction sand that's obtained from river? We get black construction sand here. Is it fine to wash and dry the sand before using it? of course, I'll be running it through a sieve to filter out fine dust.
Yes it’s fine as long as there is no salt , it’s doesn’t get compact it’s absolutely good to go… yes sieve it and get rid of fine dust or sediments 😊
So where do you get that nice aquarium sand ? I don’t see anything like that here . Thank you ! Love your videos 😊
this is from my local aquarium shop unfortunately they don’t have any brand as such ..worse of all it’s never the same it all depends on the stock but I ensure that it’s fine …lucky it always slightly larger granules

Does cinder work as a successful succulent soil mix?
yes but for people from dry environment…not for ppl from costal area or high humidity regions..as cinder retains slight moisture ..in high humidity regions it can cause issue ….this is what I have heard from others ..I haven’t personally used cinder but for people from Delhi using only cinder has worked wonders 😊🪴
Where can I get aquarium sand? Is it Morang used in building construction?
in any local aquarium shop just ensure it’s slightly bigger granular something like sugar size granules
Morang sand is the brown river sand I believe which they used for construction…the issue with river sand is it’s very fine …so you want to add pumice or perlite along with it and 10 percent filtered garden soil ….as the sand is very fine there is a chance it might get compact when mixed with too much garden soil

Sir i sèe small white mealy bugs on my succulents in between the leaves how to get rid of them
first keep the succulent away from other plants ...use some dry cinnamon powder a pinch of it and after 30 mins use a soft make up brush and clean it off ..what is your soil mix
@@LushGardener sand perlite compost little cocopeat neem powder
avoid compost
Y sir dont they need compost
because succulents do not need a very organic soil.. apart from that succulents tend to go dormant in different seasons as per your environment. That is why I don’t use both … succulents need poor nutrient soil

cinder is good for dry climate like north part of India Delhi and all …. only cinder is enough nothing required….
costal area avoid Asit retains moisture
Thank you very much sir. This video have learned me about the real well drained potting mix for the succulents. But how much nutrition will the plant get from that much soil. I have enough doubts about how much nutrition will be retained in that small amount of soil and for how long.
thank you so much for watching sir …..it’s been couple of years I stopped adding fertiliser or any nutrients….during the growing season once in a while I add pond water or aquarium water that too once in 2 months only growing season ….so far I haven’t had any issue related with nutrient’s for example I didn’t see any succulent being unhealthy due to lack of nutrients ..succulents prefer very lean nutrient soil just like cactus
hence I tried to create a soil mix that resembles a lot like arid mountain soil …….

Can I use compost instead of garden soil with the same sieving method?
Mam compost will be highly nutrient and it will weaken the succulent….apart from that if the succulent is dormant adding compost can be risky….as dormant succulents don’t need fertiliser or nutrients….😢
During summers majority of succulents will go dormant …
Apart this compost can also increase the activity of mealy bugs in succulents and mould or fungal growth as succulents don’t take up so much nutrients from soil….compost will also retain moisture 👍🏼

Hi LG

First of all what is Cinder?
What are your thoughts about using cinder as potting media?
cinder is good as it’s very porous and lose ....however I have never used cinder it .....very difficult to get the pure cinder and it’s slightly expensive .... there are a lot of sellers who sell cinder online these days but I doubt how authentic it is ...because you actually can’t see it in person it’s all based on pictures
cinder basically are small pieces of partly burnt coal or wood and other fragments of rocks it’s depends at times you might find cinder in black colour sometimes reddish ....it’s a byproduct of coal mines
ideally it’s said that cinder acts as pest repellent but recently someone using cinder shared a pic of his succulent completely infested with mealy bugs.
That’s why I said I doubt the authenticity of what’s being sold online 😊

hi will check and let you know ☺️..
the pot filtering can be skipped if you purchase soil online …I pick up soil from the ground hence lot of larger rocks

Coarse peat moss texture.
Right now I only have sand..Can I use this?
Also is this a good time to repot?
My Hercules burnt to a crisp..😢
you can use sand but mix some garden soil ....u can repot if the temperature are within 33-34 degrees.....only repot echeveria don’t repot others as only echeveria is in growing period now don’t repot dormant succulents
Where do you get aquarium sand.Is it not necessary to add fertiliser and charcoal pieces.
You will find aquarium sand online as well as in your local aquarium shop....I would suggest local shop will be much better ....fertiliser is not very important
They will do just fine without it ( most of the succulent varieties are currently dormant so anyways we don’t need to add any fertiliser to them ) ....however my next video will be on fertiliser it will make things much clear .....charcoal is optional
Thanks a lot for the quick response.Iwill buy the sand from local shop as it will be cheaper 🙏
@@anuradhakadambi6326 yes that will be best ...buy medium granular or slightly bigger don’t go for very large pebbles all the best 😊
Thank you once again 🙏
Aquarian soil can be found in a large pet store in the fish department.
In the local nurseries ive noticed haworthias r planted in more clumpy soil mix, ive never actually seen well drainihg, well aerated soil mix as urs .is it bcz it more expensive?
yes mam the homemade mix we make turns out expensive we have few plants compared to nursery and we don’t realise while making in small batches but if you make a bigger batch our mix is very expensive … apart from this most of these plants we see is usually keeps moving so cocopeat is less expensive for them and easy to transport plants as it light …. apart from this succulents would die immediately in cocopeat it takes couple of months before the signs of problems start
and to be honest before the plants starts getting issue it’s probably reached to someone’s house by then and then after getting home maybe in few months the succulents starts to deteriorate
Thanks a lot sir, i understood so many things about succulents from ur videos.. u hv taken so much efforts to reply to each n every comment.. thankuuu..More healthy and happy succulents to u 😀
