"Heineken? Fuck that shit! PABST! BLUE! RIBBON!" 30 years later, "Blue Velvet" still sends chills down my spine, and Dennis Hopper's Frank Booth stands out as one of the most memorable and menacing villains to ever grace the silver screen.
I love all Dennis Hoppers performances. and am so glad that Robert Logia did not get the roll of frank booth. the amyle nitrate he inhales in blue velvet and the way he acts it out is stunning even today.
Believe it or not even Bobby Vinson was considered for the part . He would have been better than Loggia but Hopper pitched himself to Lynch saying “ I am Frank Booth !” And the rest is the history cliche
Loggia was definitely good but can’t imagine anyone else playing Booth but Hopper. When Lynch offered him the role he said “I am Frank!”, and he was and the best choice.
I've often said, when an actor can make you hate or fear one of the character's that they are portraying, that is a great actor..Dennis was such an underrated, yet great actor, he could play a whacko/sicko about as well as most, if not all of the GREAT actors....simply an amazing talent !!!
I agree. There use to be actors that I hated because they would always play the bad guys. I came to realize that they are just really good actors to as you said, hate and fear them.
Dennis was a modern artist, through and through. The abuse was a project. Renown for his creative photography, he hung and collected with modern expressionists. He ventured and that's the coolness.
When it came to playing wound up, on the edge of madness or on the edge of sanity, no one was better than Dennis Hopper. Fine actor and underrated director.
Dennis Hopper, Blue Velvet, Frank, taught me to dive a bit, to go below the surface, in the attempt to figure out, to understand, why we humans, over and over, end up as these dysfunctional, violent idiots. So to this date, Dennis Hopper, is the most important actor in my life. Thank you Mr. Hopper. Your contribution will not be forgotten.
He really did drink that much ", cause a beer is like a loaf of bread...,' So glad he was sober to catch this moment. What a amazing actor & interview " that's good"
DAMN. His first year back in films in over 12 years, and what does he do?? _Blue Velvet, River's Edge, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Part 2_ AND _Hoosiers_ (for which he deservedly got an Oscar® nomination for Best Supporting Actor). WHEW!!!!
Just saw him in an episode of Bonanza. He was like 28 at the time but I knew he looked familiar and sure enough it was him. He worked great with Michael Landon.
River's Edge is a sadly underrated film. Its theme? APATHY. A troubled young man kills his girlfriend and leaves her nude body in the woods and no one seems to care. Wow! What's more chilling than that? IT WAS BASED ON A TRUE STORY!
River's Edge, Blue Velvet, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Dennis Hopper was just perfect for cult movies. There will never be another like him! (edit; wrote this comment drunk while drinking a Pabst Blue Ribbon)
We miss you Dennis. You were too suave for this world. Frank Booth is like no other character whatsoever and Dennis is like no other actor. Not exactly anyways. I'm sure there are some similar ones out there but still. Mr. Hopper was the fucking man.
Should be noted David Letterman also had a drinking problem and he gave up alcohol in the early 80s where then his career really took off. I think that is why he was so interested in asking Dennis questions about his experience.
That's where drugs can be a good thing just as long as YA DONT ABUSE IT!!! know your limitations, know your body, know your intake......BUT!!!! I'm talking about doing this during the days of this interview, now, 2019, I would highly advise anyone to stay away from ALL DRUGS!!! these days, u dont know what's mixed in there with it, and if u do know for a fact it's not mixed with anything, theres still the highly addictive properties to whatever it is you're taking cause times have changed for the worse when it comes to the partying scene....its best to just be sober, that's what I do now.
Lots of comments and love on here for Blue Velvet, but Hopper was pushing River’s Edge in this interview. If you haven’t seen River’s Edge, do so immediately.
John Houston’s Noah Cross in Chinatown is the most frightening realistic villain in movie history . Dennis Hopper’s Frank Booth is definitely the sleaziest .
I miss interesting actors like Hopper. Not to bitch, but they are ALL becoming safe and boring good looking men. Damon, Clooney, Craig, etc. (sigh) Miss ya Dennis.
Wasn’t Sacramento it was Milpitas Ca, and the only truth to Rivers Edge was a girl was killed and kids came and looked at the corpse but told no authorities for a few days.
Letterman was often terrible back then. He grew into a great host. I wonder if he ever sees his old interview. It's fun to see him as a guest on other shows now.
this is why actors should never be directors. Especially drug addicts. The helium would have been great, the film is not as good as it could have been if it was included
Dark Melodrama... totally worthwhile. Hopper’s Great, but Crispin Glover’s wonderful performance will stay with you long after the credits have finished crawling up the screen.
Frank Boothe is a good quarter of my personality, more so when I was younger - I keep him away from the other parts of me, because if they met well let's say old frank ain't the worst of them.
"Heineken? Fuck that shit! PABST! BLUE! RIBBON!" 30 years later, "Blue Velvet" still sends chills down my spine, and Dennis Hopper's Frank Booth stands out as one of the most memorable and menacing villains to ever grace the silver screen.
"You know what a love letter is? Its a bullet from a fucking gun, fucker!"
+Haborym You receive a love letter from me, You're F..ked forever!
Pabst Blue Ribbon!
heineken ?!! fuck that shit !!! PABST BLUE RIBBON
Kurt Wellhausen HEY RAYMOND PASS THE FUCKIN BEER!
mitchellkarera do you want me to pour the beer, Frank?
Christopher carrier no I want you to fuck it !
@@maitro94 One thing I can't fuckin' stand is warm beer. It makes me fuckin' puke!
i think that dennis hopper will be considered one of the best character actors of all time, a true legend
He embodied evil better than anyone I can think of when he was Frank Booth
He was Frank and he was one suave well dressed man too
+Billy C. LeWorth Ben was one suave fuck too
+John Doe I absolutely *LOVED* the costumes in that movie. It's pretty much the only time I paused a film just to look at the suits.
frank booth was one twisted fuck, and I cant think of anyone who could have brought him to live better.
Its because he carries the evil inside of him in reality too. Thats what actors really do actually. Its the shadow self.
Dennis Hopper was incredible even in "Giant" with James Dean, an amazing actor he was.
And In Speed as well
Now it's dark
But I can see
Dennis Hopper is totally fucking awesome.
Ahahaha omg I don't know why but I almost busted a lung when I saw your profile pic
River's Edge along with Blue Velvet are two of the best films of the 80's
Dennis Hooper was so fucking underrated as an actor! He should have been freaking nominated for best actor, Blue Velvet!
Great, exceptional actor! Bummer it seams the greats are all gone.
I love all Dennis Hoppers performances.
and am so glad that Robert Logia did not get the roll of frank booth.
the amyle nitrate he inhales in blue velvet and the way he acts it out is stunning even today.
Damm Robert Loggia is an amazing actor as well but Dennis Hopper owns it
Believe it or not even Bobby Vinson was considered for the part .
Letterman always seemed to have a boyish fascination with hard-core druggies and alcoholics. Hopper is doing a good job of being gracious here.
Letterman's fascination spurs from his own alcoholic demons. He's talked about it over the years.
I've often said, when an actor can make you hate or fear one of the character's that they are portraying, that is a great actor..Dennis was such an underrated, yet great actor, he could play a whacko/sicko about as well as most, if not all of the GREAT actors....simply an amazing talent !!!

I love Dennis! His laugh is so funny:)
Great evil laughter from Frank Booth and Howard Payne.
Dennis hopper had the coolest devilish laugh.
He was such a talented, cool man. R.i.P
Man, Hopper is awesome in 'Rumble Fish'. Cult hero all the way.
Absolute legend, he could act the arse off most of today's Hollywood A listers.
Hopper dripped coolness- his performance in Hoosiers with Gene Hackman is peerless- talented photographer too...
River's Edge is also an excellent movie.
Heineken…FUCK THAT SHIT!!! PAPSTS BLUE RIBBON!!!!!!!!!
"You want me to pour the beer?"
"No..I want you to FUCK it! Pour the fucking beer!"
hes so handsome and seems the opposite of all the characters i play.
I miss Dennis Hopper, last movie he did was George Romero's Land of the Dead. He was a lot of fun in it.
Each You Tube video I see makes me love David Lynch even more haha
Dennis Hopper, Blue Velvet, Frank, taught me to dive a bit, to go below the surface, in the attempt to figure out, to understand, why we humans, over and over, end up as these dysfunctional, violent idiots. So to this date, Dennis Hopper, is the most important actor in my life. Thank you Mr. Hopper. Your contribution will not be forgotten.
in the early '70s, Dennis Hopper was nearly as mad as Frank; he later became mainstream, but there was a time when Dennis was HARDCORE
*****
*American public you mean.
Hopper told Lynch, “I want to play Frank because I AM Frank.” Lynch said after he heard that he wasn’t sure whether he wanted Hopper on set.
Dennis Hopper just a crazy mad genius nobody plays batshit crazy with his nutty humor like the late great Dennis Hopper
He really did drink that much ", cause a beer is like a loaf of bread...,' So glad he was sober to catch this moment. What a amazing actor & interview " that's good"
great ending on jimi hendrix. rip dennis hopper. what is life
DAMN. His first year back in films in over 12 years, and what does he do?? _Blue Velvet, River's Edge, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Part 2_ AND _Hoosiers_ (for which he deservedly got an Oscar® nomination for Best Supporting Actor). WHEW!!!!
he has such great sense of humor.......
Just saw him in an episode of Bonanza. He was like 28 at the time but I knew he looked familiar and sure enough it was him. He worked great with Michael Landon.
Blue Velvet & River's Edge are 2 of my favorite movies. Dennis has a lot to do with that
I would love to see someone pitch up his voice and dub it into the movie.
Its on yt bud :)
Hopper is awesome.
Dennis Hopper. Greatest actor of all time.
Come on !
RIP Dennis.
LEGEND.
River's Edge is a sadly underrated film. Its theme? APATHY. A troubled young man kills his girlfriend and leaves her nude body in the woods and no one seems to care. Wow! What's more chilling than that? IT WAS BASED ON A TRUE STORY!
"blue velvet" is slang for nitrous oxide.
It is now...
Angel🕊Love Frank. LOVE DENNIS❤️
I cut my cable years ago. I'd forgotten just how many commercial breaks the popular shows had. I don't miss it.
Network t.v. is circling the drain, and deservedly so
Fantastic actor
His laugh..........crazy😆
River's Edge, Blue Velvet, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Dennis Hopper was just perfect for cult movies. There will never be another like him!
(edit; wrote this comment drunk while drinking a Pabst Blue Ribbon)
28 beers, a half gallon of rum (with a fifth as a backup) and about 3 grams of coke. every day for five years.
That’s a full-time job in-and-of-itself.
This man OOOZES coolness. His look/voice is smooth as silk or...
VELVET! Lol ;) haha I love this man's skill set
legend.
OMG!!! Thank you Hopper. 24+ beers and 1/2 gallon rum + 1/5th of rum (on the side)... ffs. He's so cool about it too.
Whenever I have a PBR tall-boy, I think of Frank, and feel like fucking anything that moves.
Let's have a fucking toast to "Frank"!!
Put it on! Candy colored clown!
after all that alcohol and did three grams of blow to sober up.
good god its amazing he doesn't have any permanent tics.
The first time I watched Blue Velvet I had to turn it off as I knew guys like Booth....
No.
Ew
I knew Frank Booth. Frank Booth was a friend of mine.Senator Quayle , you're no Frank Booth...
Crispin Glover
Magic carpet ride :)
One well-dressed fucking man Hopper was.
felsner1 One Suave fuck!

SO SUAVE! #FrankBooth #BlueVelvet #twinpeaks2016
We miss you Dennis. You were too suave for this world. Frank Booth is like no other character whatsoever and Dennis is like no other actor. Not exactly anyways. I'm sure there are some similar ones out there but still. Mr. Hopper was the fucking man.
Nice link between Blue Velvet and Raging Bull
Pabst Blue Ribbon in both.
“Next time the bartender says What’ll it be......”
Pop quiz hotshot! Pabst Blue Ribbon!
Sounds like Dave was trying to find validity for something in his own life, the way he kept trying to get him to agree that he was now better
Dont u fuckin look at meeee!
Should be noted David Letterman also had a drinking problem and he gave up alcohol in the early 80s where then his career really took off. I think that is why he was so interested in asking Dennis questions about his experience.
Who wants to go for a joy ride....???
That's where drugs can be a good thing just as long as YA DONT ABUSE IT!!! know your limitations, know your body, know your intake......BUT!!!! Also RIVERS EDGE.
I could hear Carson saying something like that.
Here's to Ben. Be polite.
You'll have a Pabst blue ribbon!
Waterworld. Beerworld.
When ask about his 8 day marriage to Michelle Phillips Dennis said....
yeah, but we did a lot of living in those 8 days....
"It was an..AcciDent--unh."
The essential tool of a talk show host is to let the guest talk.
Lots of comments and love on here for Blue Velvet, but Hopper was pushing River’s Edge in this interview.
If you haven’t seen River’s Edge, do so immediately.
It wasn't Sacramento. It was Milpitas.
Yes. True. The movie is set around Sacramento, though...
I thought they said Oregon
John Houston’s Noah Cross in Chinatown is the most frightening realistic villain in movie history . Dennis Hopper’s Frank Booth is definitely the sleaziest .
TCM 2 = He's cool.
I miss interesting actors like Hopper. Not to bitch, but they are ALL becoming safe and boring good looking men. Damon, Clooney, Craig, etc. (sigh) Miss ya Dennis.
Welcome to the Hogwarts school of chilling big.
Heineken!!?!!
Next!
Get em out of the car Raymond
Wasn’t Sacramento it was Milpitas Ca, and the only truth to Rivers Edge was a girl was killed and kids came and looked at the corpse but told no authorities for a few days.
Unfortunately Letterman lost his edge long ago. He was KING now just another late night interviewer.
Letterman was a jerk from day one. Carson and Leno blew him away.
Letterman was often terrible back then. He grew into a great host. I wonder if he ever sees his old interview. It's fun to see him as a guest on other shows now.
....PROBABLY... HMM TRUST ME... (EXPERT ADVICE FROM DENNIS!)
Is It Ryan Reynolds on David Letterman show?
to think he was really nozing lol
Back when Letterman was a true host & great interviewer, Today, everything he does is centered around his left-wing political egenda.
Dennis Hopper bit too real for Letterman that phony
David Letterman seems to be obsessed with people's drug habits. WHY??
This would've been a great interview ....
With a better interviewer.
this is why actors should never be directors. Especially drug addicts. The helium would have been great, the film is not as good as it could have been if it was included
2:45 3 grams of ( ).
It was always boring to watch Letterman address a serious subject/film/actor with that stupid Wally Cleaver shit he had down pat.
River's Edge? Never heard of it.
Dark Melodrama... totally worthwhile. Hopper’s Great, but Crispin Glover’s wonderful performance will stay with you long after the credits have finished crawling up the screen.
Late night shows back then we're good now that all the late night shows suck that's all about politics there's no writing it's very very unwatchable
Frank Boothe is a good quarter of my personality, more so when I was younger - I keep him away from the other parts of me, because if they met well let's say old frank ain't the worst of them.
A conservative Republican.....now that's the role of the most evil he could tap into.
