I installed mine last night and this tool and design is absolute genius! If your on the fence about this accessory don’t be Leatherman should have done it in the first place!
This mod is an absolute game changer! Combined with the ratchet extension and a socket adapter it goes up another level! Other Leathermans may already have bit holders but none are as accessible as this! You really are a wizard Zap!
It's all about cost... Simple as that, marketing would put a budget of the maximum price the tool would be sold for and the engineers and designers would have to work around that manufacturing cost . This tool is already expensive at launch even by Leatherman standards, imagine adding 30usd on top of that price (I'm just assuming it'll be the same price as this guy selling this mod) so yeah marketing knows nobody is buying the new tool if it costs that much and not getting enough profit.
Just ordered one for my P2. I'm planning on putting it on the opposite side replacing the can opener, ruler, file and the awl. Those tools are too short to be useful to me. The bit exchanger is much more versatile for my needs.

You should start getting a commission from Leatherman. The only minor aesthetic flaw is that you don't get that nice satisfying magnetic click when you shut it... but functionally it's great. Might end up putting one of the stock pieces back on the other side to replace the ruler / awl but haven't decided yet.
So I actually know what you mean now... Laser Sintering...not centering. I that these are very durable hard plastics, not metallic. Went to shapeways sight and did some digging. Very cool stuff. Love the dice on your site too. 👍
They’re metallic… 60%steel 40%bronze. They have material properties, elastic modulus, tensile strength, and yield strength that are better than ductile iron
Amazing job! Haven't been on Multitool or EDC forums in a while and just discovered this. I've mildly tinkered with my Surge(s) over the years and my only claim to fame would be my Squirt PS4 Frankentool I made from various Leatherman keychain tools years ago. I will definatey be making an order. My only request after seeing this and the soon to come t-shank mod would be for a Surge-like awl and can opener. That would probably make the Free series complete for me. Thanks again for your work. This is perfect!
F me youtube gave me a recommendation for a video that is amazing, I just hope that I can get this in the UK with out it costing more then the leatherman. Have you ever thought about approaching Leatherman as an independent R&D consultant focused on personalised service, I understand these might no be 100% consumer product in regards to testing and possibly accreditation but you are 99.9% there. No matter what you have a particular skill set that seems to be commercially viable and I do hope this brings you joy/happiness, options and wealth.
I am pretty sure they know my stuff exists. A recent AMA revealed that some of the engineers have "customized" free series, but that may just mean etching. Shapeways ships to the UK from the Netherlands.
I'm buying your mods before I get the free p4, because I'm a freak. I'm still working construction, and i want a lighter tool. That darn p4 looks good but it's missing two things, this and the T shank mod.

It's a very clean, simple & robust design. But, its got so much wasted plastic space and compromised tool lengths ! Also, would it have hurt to include a 5 cent plastic toothpick ?? Hopefully the next generation is more refined with a more optimised design.
Make some bit driver exchangers like these for the Leatherman’s squirt ps4 models. I will buy them in a second :) . Specially the one for smaller drivers!
There is an adapter from 1/4 bits to 5/32 bits and it works perfectly. Wiha and aliexpress like markets have those things. It is much easier way to use little bits in standard bit holder.
Any chance of getting a "T shank blade" exchanger for the wave? Something to enable consolidating the saw and file spots so one could add better scissors. And while you're at it, can you make the new bigger scissors for the Wave - and an eyeglass bit that goes in the normal bit exchanger? P.S. - No pressure 😁
I received the flat bit driver mod piece a week ago, between the spring pieces and tiny washers in the p4 i have not been able to get it put back together. Also no matter how i position them i cant get the scissors to spring open. I see now this must be a p2 bc i dont see the scissors.
If it is a P2 it only has two larger tools, the P4 has four large tools. If you totally take it apart it can be tricky to put back together, and the springs have to locking to the right spot over the magnet, and the pawl (lever arm) has to slot into the holes in the scales. If you tighten the screws too tight it may be hard to open.
So, great products and great work. I am curious though as to how strong the material is that you are printing these parts with. I guess I’m not real sure what the process is called or what the exact material is. Assuming is a powder of sorts??? Very interesting
I just purchased the Free P2 and it’s great. The only thing i wish it had was a bit holder! I noticed there’s a flat bit holder that you show here as well as the 4mm bit holder. Which do you recommend? I don’t have either set of bits in my collection as I am (somewhat) new to the multi tool scene.

A few people have requested something like that. I just haven’t gotten around to designing it. Apparently if you have a grinder it is possible to modify the current screw driver to fit the ST300 bit extender.
Hello sir can I ask you something: I'm planning to buy this bit holder for my p4, but would like to carry it with the longer version of the bit (the one that was made for LM MUT). Do you know if this will fit p4 when it's folded, I mean if it's not too long?
It won’t fit when folded, it will stick out the side by about 1/4”. I do have holster designs on my shop that have the bit extender holder on the side.

@@TheOriginalLoca007 I don’t own a K4 but the steps should be similar. Remove the flat and philips bits and install the flat bit driver. You just shift the awl to one side or the other.
Thats what i was affraid of. I would be getting rid of the phillips on mine and also the file. I thought maybe if i could move stuff around to make it work but i also noticed the way the layout is, some stuff might not be able to be moved.

The FREE series tool profile isn't the same as the Wingman. The parts would not be interchangeable.

Did you make, or do you know some mods like this for the Free T4? The bit change doesn't fit for it, or does it?
What ist the width of the bit changer? If it is more than 5mm I think it wont fit into the T4.

You can keep one of the thick implements by trading it for two thin ones. But no touch can’t remove one thick and one thin.

Hey Zap, have you thought about making a bit driver that just slips on the Philips head screwdriver rather that replacing it wholesale?
A few people have requested something like that. I just haven’t gotten around to designing it. Apparently if you have a grinder it is possible to modify the current screw driver to fit the ST300 bit extender.

Yes. I recommend this over the 4mm, as it doesn't require magnets. It is usually ready to install out of the box.

It won't fit the FREE T4 as the flat and philips are in opposite sides, and the way the middle plastic is shaped. It does fit the T2 however.

Leatherman made an HUGE mistake for not doing it by themselves, it's the only reason any other tool with a Bit Driver is superior.
