This is pretty cool. I was born in Plymouth and have 400 years of family history there. I am also a descendant of I think 6 Mayflower passengers. I am directly related to the Nickerson line whose family has a long history of keeping tract right to the Indian lines to Massasoit. There are (I believe last I looked) 32 million people in America who have ancestry to the Mayflower passengers. The thing is, they forget the lines to the Indians. YES, I said INDIANS. I have two step-mothers of Ojibwa descent, one of which was a chief here in Michigan. I can't tell you how many times I heard, "If you were born here, you are a Native American." I'm 62 and heard that in the 1970's. My relatives preferred the term "Indian".
The plaque you read is political in nature. Hear me out. If you look up "blood quantum" you'll realize how in a strange way, the federal government was committing genocide just in those types of laws. Blood Quantum is the amount of Indian you had to be to live on the reservations or be considered "Native American" (whose term was popularized in the 1970's). Many people I knew growing up left the reservations due to lack of opportunities, financial support or control issues. You see, the reservations are held in trust. The federal government has a direct hand in what goes on in the reservations. Many that leave, do not show up on rolls.
What I'm saying is... many more Indians exist then the federal government allows you to see. But then, there are many atrocities that happened to them as well. Massasoit though, was helpful and friendly to the Pilgrims. America's history is diverse and at times very complicated. WE are not all responsible. Not even those on the Mayflower are.
Indian reservations are not much better today than they were when I was a kid. In fact, I think they are worse. Imagine being told in a house you are suppose to own, that you can not run a business out of it or even build a business on the rez. Imagine being told that your kids will not be enough Indian to live on the reservation and won't have the government card saying their Indian. Imagine being told, you have to marry an Indian and then they make up a rule where it has to be the same tribe. Imagine living so far away from town, you can't get a job.
This isn't about the Pilgrims or what happened in the past. It needs to be about NOW. Political people politicize so much Native thinking, at some point, it's just not Native anymore. Who is responsible for throwing Indians onto reservations and stopping them from freely roaming and hunting and fishing wherever they like? Greedy SOB's. MEANING, business men looking to steal for profit. Indians did not understand the idea of "owning" the land. So many times, these types of people took advantage. The term "Indian Giver" means someone that gives you something and then takes it back. Wonder where that came from. ;-)
When I was a kid, I was taught never trust the government. Not, white man bad. Not kidding. Much love to you. My Uncle always said, "Hug a tree, they have a spirit too." ;-)

Im part Cherokee ( my grandmothers side).
The current people in this country understand that when the people who came over from Europe and took our First Peoples land and persecuted them/us that the Americans of today had no part of that
To much time has passed and those that came here ( not all) that did horrible things are no longer in existence.
We are now a country that loves everyone and hopefully the lessons from so long ago have been learned
Thats why the constitution envelopes all.
My sister in laws people came over on the Mayflower.
It's so amazing when heritage of our people come into play
    Mine is Cherokee and Irish.
    Great video! History matters

Thank you for sharing Cris. Some of my ancestors also came over back then. If I remember correctly within 10 years of the Mayflower. I remember going to see Plymouth Rock and I though they had 3 small ships back then too, not just the Mayflower. To long ago to remember clearly. Very cool how your ancestry is intertwined with TJ's.

Local here. That spring/fountain at the corner of Leyden and Main hasn't worked for as long as I can remember. It was intentionally shut off because the spring didn't pass inspection for drinking. Brewster Gardens used to be a heavily industrial area in the 1800s and the town has progressively done a ton of work to restore the Town Brook to a more natural state, especially upstream.

Great watch, I used to live in Plymouth, England and always wanted to visit Plymouth, MA. I appreciate there is a lot of older indigenous burial grounds in the USA but I’m amazed that cemetery is the oldest maintained. Our tiny villages cemetery and church is 800 years old which isn’t particularly special for Somerset x

Great video! I’m also a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants and enjoyed watching your first time in Plymouth. I’ve found that a lot of people think they only descend from one passenger, however the families did marry into each other. I thought I only descended from 1, however it turned out to be 9 passengers. You might have more Pilgrim ancestry than you think.

also , there is a distinction between Puritans and Separatists. American Congregationalism is a direct descendent of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Puritanism, which began as a protest movement in England's national Anglican Church. So many Congregational Churches around here 😊
