Inflicting suffering on oneself, e.g. through self-flagellation, is a practice used by some monks in the Catholic Church as penance for sins in memory of the suffering of Christ. In the Middle Ages, flagellant processions took place on the streets of European cities during Easter - their participants flagellated themselves or carried heavy wooden crosses.

I may be biased cause R+ is my fav band, however I really believe no lyricist can rival Till. He really is a poet first. There is others like MJK from Tool who come close and such but even Tills solo stuff is just so lyrically beautiful

    🌹ROSE RED 🥀
A girl saw a little rose
    Blossoming there, in bright heights
    So she asked her beloved
If he could climb it for her
She wants it and so it is fine
So it was and so it will always be
She wants it and so it is custom
What she wants she also gets
    Deep wells must be dug
    If you want clear water
    Rose red, oh rose red
    Deep waters are not still
The young man climbs the mountain with agony
He does not care much about the view
Has the little rose only in mind
    Bring it to his beloved
She wants it and so it is fine
So it was and so it will always be
She wants it and so it is custom
What she wants she also gets
    Deep wells must be dug
    If you want clear water
    Rose red, oh rose red
    Deep waters are not still
At his boots breaks a stone
Does not want to be on the rock anymore
And a shout makes everyone aware
    Both fall into the ground
She wants it and so it is fine
So it was and so it will always be
She wants it and so it is custom
What she wants she also gets
    Deep wells must be dug
    If you want clear water
    Rose red, oh rose red
    Deep waters are not still
    Deep wells must be dug
    If you want clear water
    Rose red, oh rose red
    Deep waters are not still

The song lyrics are about the ultimate proof of love that a young woman demands from her suitor, which ultimately ends with his death.
The chorus is about the bruises you have to take before you realise who you are really dealing with, or simply how far you have to dig before all the masks fall off and the true nature or motivation of another person is revealed.
The song lyrics are made up of well-known lines from classic German poets, so that anyone familiar with standard German literature will immediately have corresponding associations.
The video takes us back to a bygone era. Representatives of the faith visit a wedding party to bless the couple.
In order to understand the following events, one should know that long after the Enlightenment, weddings in the countryside and especially in remote regions of Europe, as still today in other regions of the world, were arranged and not necessarily the result of a love affair, and that parents usually arranged things with the groom over the daughters' heads.
The young bride suddenly begins to manipulate the newcomers after the arrival of the priests and is successful with one of them.
Once again, the good Till succumbs to the temptations of woman, represented by youth and optical beauty, often mistaken for innocence.
Till the older priest and the young beauty somehow do not fit together, the thought surely had some and since a music video is not too long, we also quickly get to know the motivation of this beautiful appearance.
She needed a deputy who broke the chains of convention that her parents and the unwanted groom had put on her, so that she could be free. Along the way, most likely, the completion of revenge for what was supposedly done to her. That went here actually about the death of the parents and fresh husband and the direct presentation of the perpetrator.
The good Till must pay here analogously to the text the highest price for the demanded love proof, whereby here becomes quite clear that the motivation for the proof has nothing to do with love and that the woman who demanded the love proof throws the first stone and destroys the manipulable, unworthy admirer actively.
In the video itself is still some symbolism, such as the self-hisselflessness built in, about which could still well lecture.

This video was shot in october 2005 aproximatively 30 km away from my hometown (Brașov, Romania). Time flies...almost 20 year ago. Still a loyal fan to Rammstein to this day. Thise band is on whole other level!! Nice reaction D, btw, I like the fac that you go deep, search the lyrics and the deeper meaning. With Till there is always some twisted, deep meaning or something. So nice that thanks to the internet, youtube and all these social media platforms, we can actually see, hear each other. At the end of the day, not just vodka, but Rammstein connects people. Greetings from Romania!

The flogging is real..I read that they drank lots of vodka to help with the pain.
I saw a picture of their backs and of course Till had the worst back...then it was Paul (I believe) who had the 2nd worst back.

Love this video, it's a dark fairy tale. What makes me laugh every time are the nicely hemmed eye holes in the hood Till is wearing on the pyre. Somebody in that village apparently sat down and tailored that hood, and added tidy trim to the cut outs, so the dying man could have an unobstructed view while he burned 🤣

D, glad you did this reaction! One of my favorite Rammstein songs, love the video as well. Till's lyrics once again are never boring and never disappoint, shows you the mind that he has. Glad I could start my day again with one of your awesome videos brother! This song and video reminded me of a Grimm's fairy tale, starts out ok, ends up beyond terrible.

  • @meisterin_eder

My thoughts....Rammstein are clergy and come to the village as a kind of missionaries. Till falls in love with the young woman and she shares the same feelings for him. The band/clergy know about this and allow Till to be granted the new found love.
Since love is forbidden to them as clergy (but their acceptance towards their love), they punish themselves for sin by flogging themselves.
Later, when Till kills the man, I think he is the young woman's actual husband - she "seduces" and is using Till in order to get her will and rid of him so they can be together. But she betrays him after the crime has been committed since her plan is to become free (of him as well). Till is sentenced to death and burned at the stake.

He actually killed both, a man and a women which I think should be the parents of rose red given that a picture of a younger "her" was spilled with blood during the stabbing. It represents the deception of forbidden sins for naive men making them somebody they should not be to be able to repeatedly enjoy that obsession and therefore destroying their own lives step by step. And in addition on the way to his own inevitable destruction he will be "not the best" human being and destroy other peoples' lives as well...

I really enjoy your analysis of Rammstein and their art. Yesterday I saw your first reaction to Rammstein and after that a lot of reactions inbetween. Your were comming a long way to understand the poetry of Rammstein and you're getting closer and closer to the meaning and double meaniging of the lyrics. For a not german speaker that is reliant on sometimes not so exactly translations I'm really impressed of your understanding of the art that Rammstein uses to show the people, the sociaty a mirror of them seleves. Because that's the inner core of most of Rammsteins lyrics.
In this case Rammstein digs down deep in the box of classic german poetry and serve it for the message.
As you can see in the video they start as six monks and priests ( catholic and orthodox ) that live under the celibacy. But during the party in the village one of the monks, the benedictinan I think, Till felt in love with the beautiful girl. Also the others were intrested so they start self-castigation to get the girl out of their mind. Five were succesfull with it but one failled and did even a murder for the girl. But after the work was done she blamed him for the murder and he had to burned for his sins.
It is about the power of love and about the power of women over men, even over holy men. You can use the power to archieve everything from the one who loves you, but after that you can let him down.

The lyrics are ispired by another poem written by J. W. Goethe, like Dalai Lama (Educatedmarine has made a video that tells the story until the end), and "Rosenrot" is a character in a Grimm's fairy tale (although the story is completely different of course).
The flogging was/is a tradition coming from Christian monks, like a purification thing ("paying for their sins"), that part wasn't a dream.
What happens is that Till is attracted by this beautiful young girl, which is "forbidden" for monks who are supposed to be celibate. But she pretended to love him, too, and said he would have to kill her parents so that she could elope with him, but when he comes out of the house after the deed, she screams "murderer!", and so the villagers come to arrest him and sentence him to die by being burnt at the stake.
I think it's about female manipulation of men ("what she wants, she gets").

You're the first person to really grasp the idea that the perceived attraction from the girl was not real. If you were to watch the making of video for this, the director talks about how the only scenes where their interaction is real is when she's receiving communion, and when they're walking by the other priests. All the other glances and interactions, especially the one in the bed, is not real. So he is perceiving this relationship with a girl, as a grown man, that isn't there.

    • @LifeisFoo
      @LifeisFoo 7 місяців тому

I also want to emphasize, because other commenters are referring to her as a young woman, that she is a girl. She is a child. So the idea that this child is to blame for the grown man's actions, and not his own misconceptions, is sad.
