  • “What does it mean to be orientated?” is the question Sara Ahmed answers in her 2006 book, Queer Phenomenology. Ahmed describes herself as a feminist writer and independent scholar working at the intersection of feminist, queer and race studies. She was previously a professor of race and cultural studies at Goldsmiths. I will be summarising the introduction to her fascinating book as an entry point to understanding what her project is.

Well done! This was the most poignant, compelling articulation (and recitation) of Ahmed's Queer Phenomenology I've encountered.
I tried to read through the text over a year ago and felt like I had barely scratched the surface due to all of the use of other philosophers. Though Ahmed specifically states that she doesn't want the reader to go back to the old texts, I felt like I needed to in order to appreciate the depth of the work and if I wanted to follow the methodology myself.
I now approach the subject with more vigor. Thank you 🙏

PS. I'm not blowing smoke. This is probably the 7th or 8th video on this work that I've engaged in in the last week or so.

Want to add also, philosophy builds on a tradition so it can be beneficial to encounter the "old texts" directly, though the language of Husserl can be rather hard-going. Nonetheless, I salute your keenness to learn.
