I’ve always wondered about ghosts since playing phasmophobia, behaviors, voices, evidence, sanity, all of it is fascinating. Thanks a lot for making a video explaining this, this should have more views, please do more for new ghosts added to the game
Since I can remember the creepy story of ghost and being coming from another realms always fascinated me the way so many culture explain certain recurring event this way is so interesting thanks for the explanation of the folklore in the game i love how phasmaphobia show different aspect of ghost in the game
Great video! I'm all in for the deep dive into Demons video. I've looked into it myself and it's quite the interesting topic. I got curious about it from SMT and it explains why the series clasifies Angel(-like) creatures as demons. Devil May Cry is another series that could have used the "classic" concept of demons in an interesting way because in the (not DmC:DMC) lore there're only demons and no angels but angel depictions exist, but I feel only the 1st game seemed to be interested in delving into the idea IMO.
I really liked your analysis. My favorite entities are the Mare (for I constantly suffer from parasomnie), the Daemon and the Poltergeist. I once read an interpretation about where the Oni originated from and an addition to what you exposed, it was said that the Oni can be the result of an evil man becoming a monster in life. Not like a possession by an evil spirit, but like a Samurai turning into a red horned monster with long fengs, still using his katana and Kanabo during his pillaging and murder. Ironically, Dead by daylight’s portrayal of the Oni is way better. A visual representation of detaching from your humanity and honor.
I thought this was The Checkpoints Show for a sec and was wondering why there was a woman with a non-British accent narrating the video. XD Anyway, when you first said "wraiths," my mind immediately went to the wraiths in Madoka Magica. Given the definition you used for wraiths, I wonder why the writers chose the word "wraiths" for the despaired souls of magical girls. Maybe it's because the appear immediately after a magical girl's soul gem turns into a grief seed. However, magical girls in the show are basically liches or zombies, meaning they're already dead, so unless a magical girl falls into despair shortly after she made her contract, "wraith" doesn't exactly fit. I'm sorry to turn this video into a conversation about Madoka Magica. That's just where my autistic mind went when I heard you say "wraith."

Muslim here. From an Islamic standpoint Jinns arent wish granting spirits or djinies that interact with you. They are beings made of smokeless fire unlike humans who are made out of mud and clay. Both of these beings share this world. There are good and bad jinns muslim, christian, jewish, hindu, atheist jinns just like humans. The main thing is that humans and jinns share this world. While we like to live in tidy houses etc jinns like to live in abondened houses. The bad jinns are what we know in the western world as demons. Because they try their best to do bad stuff and interact with humans. We humans can‘t see jinns since god put a curtain infront of our eyes. Tho some jinns will come to you and interact with you in a human or animal form. You can see if you are interacting with one ir the person or animal has no shadow, feet that don‘t allign, glittery/ shiny eyes. Etc if you see any of those details just walk away don‘t show fear.
The poltergeist lore reminded me of spirit obsessions, maybe they are even related? As someone who's parents religion is mostly based on "Deceased Entities", I am pretty used to the idea of "Evil" spirits attached to a person, not a place, and provoking them to feed on bad emotions and/or addictions. I don't know too much about it, never really studied it in depth.

About the banshee as well, I always thought the screams could be traced back to the whistling of trees in windy weather. My father’s family are born in the US but they have Irish roots and say to never pick up a banshee’s comb and the whistle of the trees means she is near

Oni (鬼) literally means “ghost” in Japanese. In the anime Demon Slayer, they call “demons” oni which means ghost. But probably due to western culture that interprets ghosts as transparent sprits that can’t have physical contact with. So instead of translating it into ghost slayer, demon slayer was chosen. The Japanese name of Demon Slayer is 鬼滅の刃 which literally translates to “Knife/sword that destroys/eliminates ghost.”
As a Japanese, I appreciate your good explanation of “Oni.” But this word “Oni” originally came from Chinese “Gui” means “spirits coming back to this world.” So, “Oni” initially didn’t have a specific shape. While being adapted in Japan, “Oni”=“鬼” was given the way it looks today. Due to the cultural influence from the continent, the spirits from after life were believed to be the existence which can only come back from a certain direction -between the directions of cow and tiger- and this idea influenced how “Oni” looks like in Japan. Now you see, horns of bull and pants with tiger-stripes.
As a Chinese, we think of 鬼 as ghosts the same as in English. A general term for supernatural things that often hide in dark places. Not really like demons which is 惡魔in Chinese which shares the same term as Devils.
When i hear the word "Wraith", I remember the 1980's Charlie Sheen sci-fi/horror movie "The Wraith". It's like the western movie "Pale Rider", or even "The Crow" because it's about a person who was killed and returns for vengeance. He turns into a futuristic(for the 80's) racecar, and kills his killers by running them over.

About the Oni and such, sure they are not run of the mill demons, but you compare them to dragons, and for example Biblical dragons are said to be part of the broader concept of demons in New Testament terminology, for example Satan is called The Dragon, and that aligns with the Old Testament idea of Seraphim being burning snakes that fly, most are though be benign spiritual beings but some turned evil, and given the snake-like shape when materially manifested perhaps are closer to what now is called Wyvern I guess. So in short, yes demons have spiritual and material aspects and Oni could fit there, problem is more with the westernized modern understand of the umbrella term demon, which is just New Testament wording for "bad supernatural beings" used as counterpart for angel which at that period transitioned from meaning "messenger", a job title, to being used as umbrella term for the good spiritual beings. And as said spiritual beings in Bible lore and other middle eastern cultures are synonymous with what you would call paranormal, some have full blown physical appearance while most others can manifest from time to time as physical entities and so on.
Overall a great video, but banshee being fairy women doesn’t mean they're not ghosts. You have to remember it’s not a coincidence Otherworld and Underworld sound so similar. Some legends say that each banshee is the ancestor of the family she haunts. Which could be used to justify the banshee appearing to only one player if you just changed the target of her eventual lashing out. Fun Fact about Banshee! They're actually barn owls! If you don’t believe me, look up barn owls screaming! It’s a nightmare!

For example they can add a new Mare ability in which someone wispers into your ear if you are very close to the ghost. It would be very low chance but still. Wraith is already easy to figure with salt so why not make it able to teleport around during the hunt like in old versions of Phasmo?

I have seen ghost videos of Jinn that are no different from poltergeist footage tbh. I manage a lot of this footage is base on a lot of top 5 ghost videos on youtube. Personally, I would change the name of phantoms to doppelgangers since they can copy a players appearance. Personally I kind of wish ghost activity could happen outside the house and in the van, just make it that they can't go on ghost hunts. I kind of wish they are a ghost type that can like fall in love with one player. As it would torment with ghost activity that only that one player can experience, and it the only ghost hunts the other players. Kinda like a Yandere character in anime. Also when it makes a manifestation like an apparition or shadow, only that player can see it. But make it doesn't ghost hunt the player it falls in love with.
My home is haunted by Poltergeist. It's very annoying and inconvenient. Stuff fall, one or more get depressed, they scare the younger ones, end up with bloody scratches out of nowhere, freak out our pets, it sucks. But I think it has something to do with the territories KKK past. There were *very* old chains and chairs when we first came here. Even a whole weathered swings that were half buried.
Might ya consider a part 2 since they've doubled the number of ghosts since this video?

Demons are actually servitors of the ancient pagan gods. The Abrahamic religions made them into malevolant tormentors and tempters of humans.
