- Get your twang on while expanding your musical horizons with these 10 all-star options for beginner banjos.
We're breaking out of the six-string mold and diving into the bright, toe-tapping world of the banjo. We'll look at 10 affordable banjos that are perfect for any acoustic guitar player looking to dabble in some new sonic territories.
We've split our list into two categories: resonator banjos and open back banjos. Some of you may be scratching your heads, wondering, "What's the difference, Tony?" Well, you're about to find out!
Resonator banjos, like the Deering Goodtime #2 and the Recording King RK-R20, are perfect for those looking for that full-bodied, bluegrass sound. The resonator at the back of the banjo projects the sound forward, which gives these banjos a rich, powerful tone.
On the other hand, open back banjos, such as the Goldtone CC-100, provide a mellower and more intimate sound. These banjos are lighter, easier to hold, and are often used in old-time music and clawhammer style playing.
But regardless of which style you choose, here's a pro-tip: learning to play a new instrument can have incredible benefits for your guitar playing. It can unlock new sonic patterns, giving you fresh ideas and ways of approaching your guitar. Plus, let's be honest, who wouldn't want to add a bit of banjo flair to their acoustic repertoire?

Hey Tony and my fellow Guitar Geeks!
I agree that learning a new instrument helps with playing guitar! I was struggling to get started with finger style on my steel string guitar. I really thought I’d never be able to do it at all. Once I picked up the ukulele, I resigned myself to mostly flat picking or only strumming with my fingers. Once I was truly starting to face songs where I had to use finger style on uke, I realized it didn’t seem as difficult as when I had tried many times on guitar. I believe having two less strings allowed me to get a better handle.
Several months later, I gave it another shot on my guitar, and I was shocked to find it didn’t seem as difficult as my prior attempts. Now, I’m no finger style expert yet, but it comes much easier to me generally speaking. I have ukulele to thank for pushing my guitar skills forward and getting me going with something I thought I’d never be able to do.
Whether it’s a banjo, ukulele, or something else, give it a shot! It won’t hurt, and it may just actually take you farther. Just be sure to budget your time to account for another instrument because you don’t want to let your guitar skills slide backwards. I bet Tony can make suggestions on that front.
Keep at it, everyone!
Tony you talk about books all the time.. Would love an episode about books.
Enjoyed this weeks’ show! I’ve been a self-taught acoustic guitar geek since the mid 70’s. I added 5 string banjo and mandolin to my repertoire over the past 5 years. I found the mandolin to be a fairly easy instrument to learn as a guitarist. Would like to see a future episode featuring good beginner to moderate mandos. Keep playin’!
I agree!
Me too!
I always look forward to Acoustic Tuesdays.
Thanks so much for featuring the Harp EP info Tony!! The solo harp tracks have been ready for release since February, however the multi-instrument versions of the songs are taking a little while to complete. More info soon! 🙌
Hey hey! Willy from W.J. Watson Pickguards! Thank you so much for the love ♥️ 🐢
Something you should mention is that open-back banjos, played old timey, sound even better with nylon strings.
Does it require having a different bridge/setup?
I took the easy way out - I got the Dean Backwoods 6 ($350) which has 6 strings and plays like a guitar but sounds like a banjo. Very serviceable in small groups and for recording.
Didn’t know such an animal exists. Guess it’s kind of like the Guitarlele thing, lol. Thanks for the tip!
Very helpful. All 3 brands seem to be good options for beginners. I'm planning to add a banjo (probably Deering) later this year after I buy a Bouzouki (probably Gold Tone).
Thanks for featuring Jim Pankey with the RK Dirty 30s banjos. I got a used RK-R35 Madison resonator (retails for about a thousand dollars and an instrument he plays) and it's a great instrument. And he's a great ambassador for the company.
A few years back I said that I was going to learn banjo when I retired. This kept my wife from complaining about the next guitar. When I broke my leg and ankle and had them reattached with a titanium plate, I decided to get a banjo. My wife bought me a 3 string cigar box guitar and it is great. I do learn new things and new ways to think about my six strings.
Hey Tony:
I play Ukulele and some Guitar and would love to learn banjo especially the banjolele’s.
Kept watching at 0:13 … thanks man! Good hook!
Playing the melody for the solo - George Harrison on "And I Love Her". And it's on an acoustic guitar.
Check out Holter Pickguards (Mullins Taylor). The closet you'll ever get to prewar,
What do you think about 6 string banjos? Thank you. This is helpful. I made a 5 string banjo that’s ok. I inherited a banjo Ukraine from my dad! Later! Take care
Tony, your Tabs and most TABS are useless to blind and legally blind folks like me. There is a way but usually not used. That's why your TAC lessons are of value because you describe string-fret by string-fret each note, pick direction or finger pluck for each note. Of even more value is fret board wizard. Thanks
I’m out…guess plenty people watch but not for me anymore…un sub
Maybe it would be more productive to give Tony input and explain what you would prefer, if you don’t mind. It’s too bad you’re not feeling this channel anymore. Try to help Tony understand what you’d like to see or miss seeing. Best to you.
It just hit me, you're a hanson brother. ;)
