Gallien Krueger 250ML - Iron Maiden - stock combo speakers

  • Having heard that Maiden actually mic'd up the tiny 6.5" speakers on the combo to record Somewhere in Time, I wanted to give it a try myself. Actually didn't turn out half bad either. The amp is boosted with a Boss SD-1. It does have a low / high gain switch but low gain is just a bit too low and high is kinda flubby so boosting the low gain setting is the best option. Guitar is my Ghost Fret and the mics are a Sennheiser E609 and a Heil PR20 as shown in the pic.

    This would be a cool amp to do NAM captures of! I actually got curious about these amps because of Chuck from Death. Those tiny speakers sound surprisingly good!

    Josh Christian from Toxik used the 250rl on their first two albums.

    Appreciate the attempt but it was actually the high gain setting with a Boss Fa1 and Mxr 10 eq in front, studio rack eq in the loop and then into a 4x12 Marshall with g12-65 or t75. You can try with a ts9 in front and a ge7 in the loop. Adrian Smith can be actually seen in studio with the gk250ml on top of a Marshall 4x12 during the recording of that album.

      @@low_e_music oh I forgot to say that you can also adjust the gain of each channel with the trimpots inside; there is a video of a german/Arab guy explaining it...they work counterwise, so "all the way to the left" is Max gain.

    • @low_e_music
      @low_e_music  Рік тому +1

      @@lovecraftmusic8717 Thanks! I debated messing with the trim pots when I was fixing a few cold solder joints but I decided against it. Even stock, with the gain switch in, I do like the tone but it kinda flubs out on the low end and you lose the tightness. I imagine adding more gain would make that even more prevalent.

      @@low_e_music that's why you should use a ts9 in front and a ge7 in the loop: the first cuts bass and the second adjusts everything else. Good luck and let me hear when you've done it.

      @@lovecraftmusic8717TS9 always on or just in solo guitar passages? That is my doubt, the entire album is like a Tubescreamer Ode

    This amp is just magical piece of equipment. I have one and just recently discovered an useful trick, that will make it sound even better, clearer, with more presence and overall it will sound more alive🙂👍 Just get yourself a short patch cable and connect SEND OUT with AUX IN and you will hear & see. Thank me later😉

      @low_e_music  8 місяців тому +1

      @@low_e_music Neither did I. It all happen just by coincidence. As I was going through all the comments, through all possible GK 250ML videos here on YT I came across one guy who shared this little hint. I tried that yesterday and can not stop playing ever since 😁Also to me this amp sounds the best with those little 3 gain trim pots set back to the original factory settings. Anything more above that just adds more hiss, feedback, flubby low end etc. So I returned everything back to the original condition and when I want to hit some thrash tones, like you did with Death riffs presentation I simpy hit a boost or overdrive pedal in front of this amp. This is the best I think. I use Behringer TO800. Keep up the good work buddie, I like your videos👍

      @@marekestocin7079 Thanks again! I agree with you on the trim pots too. Mine are all factory set and I am very happy with it as is. Going to try out the jumper cable this weekend and see how it works.

      Somewhere in time and Seventh Son were recorded with the 250ML.
      On the Somewhere in Time Tour it was used live, too.
      Of course also Dave played it, not just H.

    I bought one in the early 80s. I Kick myself in the head because I traded it with a coworker for a jacket I needed for my job. Not realizing I was going to go back to playing guitar again. along with that trade was one of the first issued Ibanez tube screamer and DOD preamp /overdrive . I sold my Ibanez Explorer. Stupid mistakes I've done!

    • @low_e_music
      @low_e_music  10 місяців тому +1

      The speakers likely need to be refoamed. Fairly easy to do. Just pull them out of the chassis, order the foam, and watch a video on how to do it.

    What are the differences between GK 250ML and 250ML II Series

    • @low_e_music
      @low_e_music  10 місяців тому

      The MK2 has the control panel set back a bit and also has a switch on the back to turn the internal speakers on / off. Other than that, as far as I know, they are identical electronically.
