In 1988 Arnold Glass, purchased six Lightnings. With a view to flying a Lightning in private hands. This never happened, & in 1994. 2 were sold, & the other 4 scrapped. Went to South Africa and was flown by Thunder City as ZU-BBD www.thunder-and-lightnings.co.uk/lightning/survivor.php?id=189 XS458 Is still at Cranfield Rescued by Tony Hulls from scrapping when Arnold's plans to get his Lightnings flying came to nothing www.thunder-and-lightnings.co.uk/lightning/survivor.php?id=191 XV328 Scrapped 1994. I was disgusted with Defence Sales when Arnie somehow "outbid" me for XS452 (at a lower, "quantity discount" price) but was later delighted that Tony bought her & tidied her up for fast taxi runs. A year or two later I was preparing to ship a couple of spare Avon 102's to Mike Beachy-Head for the Canberra he'd bought at auction when my phone rang & he told me he'd just lost the Canberra being flown by two very senior SAA crew so didn't need the Avons. to be continued.......
continuing...... After a long & sorry chat, Mike asked me what he should now go for so I suggested that he may be able to operate fast jets under the SA CAA so to start at the top & get a Lightning - so I gave him Tony Hulls' phone number & the rest is history. RIP Mike. I never did get out to Capetown for my "commission" flight!
@@canberra3 Thanks for the comment I`ve just googled the canberra. Sadly lost with the 2 crew. groups.google.com/g/rec.aviation.military/c/55kdrzW_k8U?pli=1
I was an association and Lightning Flying Club member. Nearest I got to them at Cranfield was taking a photo from the road. Therefore very much appreciated to see this.
When I did the earlier June visit. I thought I`ll see how far I can get into see them So I just drove onto the airfield, & parked up behind the hangar. Then walked along the row of Lightnings. Doing pic`s & video, & nobody bothered me. Try doing that nowadays ! Gettig by the security gate, & ANPR parking scameras waiting to get you parked up anywhere. Waiting to "fine" / invoice you !

An aircraft that had it's time in place. Quite the machine. Mach 2 vertical after take-off, if needed, and the Soviets were coming. Loads of Umph. Short range. It had it's time.

What a great shame none could fly again in the UK. Only ever seen fast taxiing in my lifetime 😢
Remember that day
The air show was good as well. I will put that on on, when I edit the video
