Drew, you are a true man of God! Only a man of God could make this process so much more clearer on all that is the X32, Waves and more. You helped me set mine up for the first time and this is my first time for all of this sort of thing. I'm a lifelong drummer, but I'm going to do this all by myself(performance wise). Hopefully I can find some reliable, eager people to help me move and set up equipment so I can realize my dream. I know God has a plan for me, but it's been a long road. It also doesn't help when I have to work around severe ADD. It's a nightmare, but I'm determined and I, as well as a lot of other people, know that I am talented enough, where this can work for me. I'll just be using my Korg Kronos, everything here in this video along with the speakers and misc, and my drum kit. I am my own band, so I will be playing, as well as recording the drums to my keyboard work through this system, live and in my little bitty studio. lol. ;) Any helpful advice would be welcome. Because at this point, I can't get the right people to help see me through. Those who want to help, can't. Those who CAN help, seem to be out of reach.
Drew, your videos are the Best! Just yesterday I installed my X-WSG Card. My timing was almost perfect. Almost. I had some issues that my card 'showed up' on the X32 but there was a red dot on the display telling me there was some issue. I updated the firmware, the card icon disappeared but now it works just great. I am looking forward to your routing videos. I can easily route 32 channels of inputs through MultiRack but I've been trying to route 24 inputs and use the last 8 for the 6 Matrix channels, the M/C channel and the LR. I've tried routing through outputs, aux, all the things I've heard about. No luck. I did practice routing to mix busses yesterday to play with reverbs and delays. I finally figured out that the buss was working but it was channel 25 where the buss was sending the reverb or delay to. The routing gets complicated pretty quick. I love this though. Having a lot of fun with Waves and Soooo glad you will be sharing your knowledge in this! May God Bless you!!!

Thanks so much Scott! I'm happy to help and see so many people jumping on board with this product. I love using Waves plugins on the Avid Venue Profile system, so I was really excited to see Waves come out with an interface with the X32. As far as your question, I will be making a bunch of videos on the different routing options that we have available to us with the X32/M32. I will make sure to cover this type of setup specifically for you too. Thanks!
ScottParrWeddings hey so did the card bring the sound grid? Because i saw it on sweetwater for 500 but I'm having a hard time believing that the soundgrid possessor comes with the $500
The card connects to my Extreme Server and my MacBook Pro running MultiRack. I just used this combination last week for a corporate event in Dallas and it helped my show sound Great!
Hi, I'm interested in in the SoundGrid Expansion for my X32 Rack but am considered that I'm losing the USB port. Would I be able to record and play back with my DAW through the Ethernet connection? Also, I'm considering using AudioFusion for Wireless IEM's which also requires USB audio in. Thanks
Very good video !!! I would like to know if you can connect an m32 with multirack waves and record all this at 32 tracks in turn have another console connected x32 to broadcast many? Thanks in advance!!!!
Can you tell me if it's possible to control the e.g. SSL plugin from the X32 channelstrip? It seems like you are using the computer mouse all the time? It would be so much easier and faster not to have to grab the mouse doing a concert. I hope I make sense... 😄
Hi! We have the waves card with the x32 and use the plug ins in sound grid on the axis one computer live for church service. Im trying to figure out a way to record to the same axis one computer and virtual soundcheck with this set up.
Great videos! I do have one question though: with the Impact Server, I assume it's easier to run live plugins alongside multichannel recording. But if I wanted to do this recording, would I have to use a Waves-specific DAW or would any DAW (like Logic, ProTools, etc) recognize the X-WSG connection? What would you recommend to do both at the same time?
hello friend .. i hear a fan noise when u plugged the server to power there any different server more quite than this ? and can i record live performance all tracks live in cubase ?
So why buy the waves server and sound card for the x32 why not just run a computer with multirack, or even a daw, what is the benefit of using the sound card and server?
Please, quick question, if I take my card out to install this WSG card. How will I record my 32 in and out sound to my Cubase. Will that be still possible
We have a ton invested in waves plugins already with our live stream mix. The big question I have is how much latency will there be if we are running the channels back into our p16 monitors? I tried doing some processing in Ableton and sending that out to the board but there was way to much latency. I am wondering if this will affect our in ear monitoring.
Thanks for all the info. Question for you. I am using a X32 Rack for In ear mixes. I have the 16 channels on the rack assigned to channels 1 to 16 and 17 to 32 of the console so I can mix FOH without ever changing the ear mixes. If I want to use waves on only channels 17-32 is this possible? So I have for example Kick drum on ch 1 and ch 17. If i want to put lets say H Comp on 17 but not on 1 is this possible?

Noob question I’m new to waves... when you plug in the cat 6 to the computer does it appear on the Mac automatically or do I have to download something on the computer?
The proprietary waves software loaded on it. It is just a pc with linux on it running their software. You are basically paying for the proprietary software.
The software on it is actually free to compile www.waves.com/legal/soundgrid-server-open-source-code They have to comply with there GPL license for linux. Yes it's just overpriced hardware
I have a few issues with this. In Soundgrid, where he was configuring all of this towards the end of the video, it's also where I can pull up the page that has the x-wsg and the Soundgrid listed there, but over on the Server tabs, the server is not shown. And since it's not shown, I can't pull up the eMotion ST. The X32 and the Soundgrid system throughout seems to communicate and recognize each other and works for the most part. But the Server is not shown in that tab. Support said that they don't see it as licensed/activated, but it is. It works too, so it must be. But why isn't it still right? Also when I still had my X-live card in the X32, the X32 editor quickly recognized it and set up quickly. Now that the card is the X-WSG, the configuration has changed and I can't fix it to make the Editor see the X32 now. PLease Help me.
This might be a stupid question but how is this different from just running plugins in a DAW over the normal USB card? Using the USB card means you can still record 32 tracks if you want while using plugins. Am I missing something?
Hi Lukas, great question. The main difference between the X-WSG Card with SoundGrid and using the X-USB card with a normal DAW is the latency. Running a DAW or MultiRack native you will find latency in the 10-20ms range, where SoundGrid is less than 1ms. You can read more about it here: dbbaudio.com/2017/waves-x-wsg-latency/
Great video man - is it possible to use the X-WSG Expansion Card with multirack and also record all 32 tracks (pre) in protools/studio one? One option would be to purchase the X32 Rack and add it to my current setup but I'm not sure if it's necessary
Yes you can! Waves Tracks Live (free download) lets you interface with the X-WSG card and not only record the 32 tracks, but also can run Multirack at the same time. I will be making a video on this one!
Hi Drew, nice video again... Have you compare the latency between usb card and x-wsg card without server? I think to buy the card first without server but if it's not better than the usb card I will wait until i can buy the bundle :D Cheers!!
I haven't tested that because it is solely dependent on the speed of the computer itself due to the buffer being the main source of the latency. I will have to test this in the future. Thanks!
You'll find that with a USB connection, the USB bus adds too much latency to really use it live. Even at a 32IO buffer, you're pushing 5ms due not to the io buffer, but the USB bus.
I was thinking the same thing. I noticed that Klark Technk have a new AES50 - USB interface - DN9630. I haven't tried this yet but I think it will work with clever routing. For example, connect the DN9630 to the AES50 -B socket, then to your computer for recording. Then, if you have 16 inputs on your local ins, go to the ROUTING page on the X32, tab across to the AES50 A/B page. Select local 1- 8 and 9-16 to route (direct out) to outputs AES50-B 1-8 and 9-16. This in theory should be sending prefade signal out the AES50 B bus to your computer. Then when you want to play back from computer, go to the ROUTING page, INPUTS tab and select AES50-B 1-8, 9-16 as the inputs... MY only concern is how the X32 does the direct outs.... in Drew's example in the video, he sends local 1-8, 9-16 to the CARD.... the question is can we also send to the AES50-B bus as a secondary direct out... that I don't know... I can't test this process, but this is the method I would use to be able to record and use Waves plug ins at the same time.. (I can't remove the strike out text. that is meant to stay in)
Is there any way to record all the channels and use MultiRack at the same time? If you can't with the same computer could you use a second computer connected to the same switch and do it that way?
Yes you can! Waves Tracks Live (free download) lets you interface with the X-WSG card and not only record the 32 tracks, but also can run Multirack at the same time. I will be making a video on this one!
Hey Drew. These videos are super helpful! Is the card required if we only want to connect/record 32 tracks to the computer in MultiRack software? No DSP desired right now.
Hi Tim, you are able to connect the standard X-USB or X-UF card to MultiRack Native, however, you will find that the latency on this setup might not work for your situation. You can check out my most recent post about latency here: dbbaudio.com/2017/waves-x-wsg-latency/
Drew Brashler thanks! If I read right, by just recording/playback (which it looks like I could do with their "Tracks live" software) then I'm only dealing with approx 83ms delay to get 32 tracks of recording. May be some buffering issues but again I'm not looking for DSP onboard the computer just yet. Am I close?
Sorry, I misread your question originally. If you are just recording, you wouldn't have any issues using the X-UF or X-USB cards with Waves Tracks Live. The latency only comes into play when you are trying to add processing to the audio and put it back into the PA with the band. You can run very large buffers and not have any issues recording.
Latency with the SoundGrid servers is as low as 0.8ms, each plugin itself has a certain amount of delay that is inserted as well. I will be going over all of that in my videos, don't you worry! When you run Multirack Native that is when latency starts to be a little longer.
I put together a blog post with information on the latency of the Waves X-WSG and the SoundGrid. Check it out here: dbbaudio.com/2017/waves-x-wsg-latency/
Routing the card to the channel strips is so clunky and inflexible; having to use the preamps tab to adjust headamps and Waves processing now must be sent to monitors (if you're running them from the same console). If only the X32 could have 32 insert points, each from the card, while using different sources in the 'Home' tab. Aux-In remaps only gets you 6 channels to work with this way :(
I hear you on that one, but that sort of feature would be way outside of the price range of the X32/M32. There is one way to get it working, but you would end up sacrificing 16 channels to make it work, so you would take your 32 channel board down to only a 16 channel board. I will end up going over this setup in a future video in the next few weeks!
Using separate channel strips for monitors (post fader too!) is a good way to run a board. But like you said, it eats up half your channels. It also makes routing much less flexible, since you need to devote 16 of your input sources to the card to get the MultiRack returns. For a lot of my shows, I patch an S16 to supplement the local inputs (even if I only plan to use a total of 16 inputs -- they are distributed for spatial convenience) and it would require very careful planning in banks of 8.
It's unfortunate that the X32 and M32 don't have a secondary card option either on the console or on the digital snakes. I have an M32 and I wish for the extra cost you could get a secondary card slot.
When you purchase the X32 combo on Waves's site, it comes along with all of the stuff that you need. If you just purchased the server by itself, I don't believe it comes with the software license. Make sure to grab the extra discount you can find here if you are planning on buying one: www.waves.com/r/115bgm. Thanks so much!
@@wishusknight3009 many an international act (not necessarily on an X32 mind you) run plenty of DSP directly from a Macbook and have no dedicated servers..Waves card directly to laptop through RJ45 network cable.
You will need to check what version of Soundgrid supports which version of firmware. With how popular the X32 is, you should probably run at the newest firmware version available.
What a ridiculous mess of hardware and software to create a mixer! Mixing music is a creative process, like composing or playing it. Spending a lot of time scrolling through menus to instantiate a plug-in in one piece of software and its associated hardware (laptop), to and from a mixer channel in a completely different piece of software with its associated hardware (the mixer’s little screen) - and that’s for ONE channel, ONE plug-in - is not my idea of mixing music. If the process needed by the operator does not appear locally on the actual mixing hardware, it’s just a science experiment, and one that will get very old, very fast.

Will I need to be connected to the internet every time I use waves?
no
How can I add this, if I am relying on dante for output to speakers and recording?
You would need to use a second X32 like a X32 Core to use it with your setup requiring the Dante Card.
It's unfortunate that the X32 and M32 don't have a secondary card option either on the console or on the digital snakes. I have an M32 and I wish for the extra cost you could get a secondary card slot.
@@jordanthurt that's why Yamaha boards sell for thrice the price.
One Question about this?
Do i have to buy the Multirack Software extra, or is it included when i buy the soundgrid server?
Thanks!
Drew Brashler Thanks for the answer!
Wilo this work mn midas mr12?
You had the speed of Elijah while removing those screws lol
EM
Holy shit this was helpful
Question can you use outboard gear with the DLI ?
please someone help tldr: why is it better than an X-UF card with standard usb cable to multirack native?
Hey! I explain the difference between the X-UF card and the soundgrid route on my blog post here: dbbaudio.com/2017/waves-x-wsg-latency/
What happen if only switch and pc ? No impact server
Then nothing. The Server is what does the work unless you figure out how to pirate the server software.
@@wishusknight3009 many an international act (not necessarily on an X32 mind you) run plenty of DSP directly from a Macbook and have no dedicated servers..Waves card directly to laptop through RJ45 network cable.
What version of firmware should be on the x32?
You will need to check what version of Soundgrid supports which version of firmware. With how popular the X32 is, you should probably run at the newest firmware version available.
Please any one are two plugin put on x32 some samples
You may want to up your volume to match the advertising volumes. You are kind of soft.
Great videos. Super helpful.
Waves kinda dropped the ball on not making the DSP server rack mountable
Seems quite a rubbish way of implementing waves. Can the x32 not do inserts? Then you won’t lose headamp control
:l .. yo al minuto 20 preguntándome porque vi el video completo si nunca voy a tener esa tarjeta de expansión.....:l
...yo porque también lo quiero.
What a huge amount of hassle to work around the X32's lack of effects slots.
You mean ridiculously low selling price?
The "Router" is a basic network switch..
Holy shit he just called avid “ayvid”
Now why did you say EH-VID when everyone says A'VID
Good job
Thanks!
Have you ever taken notice how often per video you say "go ahead.."? ....just saying
en français ca peut etre bien
What a ridiculous mess of hardware and software to create a mixer! Mixing music is a creative process, like composing or playing it. Spending a lot of time scrolling through menus to instantiate a plug-in in one piece of software and its associated hardware (laptop), to and from a mixer channel in a completely different piece of software with its associated hardware (the mixer’s little screen) - and that’s for ONE channel, ONE plug-in - is not my idea of mixing music. If the process needed by the operator does not appear locally on the actual mixing hardware, it’s just a science experiment, and one that will get very old, very fast.
