The Kaliadem Bunker was built as a shelter for local residents and the Mount Merapi eruption rescue team. This structure is designed to withstand volcanic ash, lava, and very high heat.

During the major eruption of Mount Merapi in 2006, this bunker became a silent witness to a heartbreaking tragedy. Two volunteers, Sukiman and Waluyo, took shelter in the bunker during the eruption. However, the heat from the hot cloud or wedhus gembel reached more than 600 degrees Celsius, trapping them and eventually dying in the bunker.
