Drummer Roger Taylor, who sang lead on 'Loser In The End' with that raspy rock 'n roll voice, is the one who hits those really high notes.

"The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke" is a painting by Richard Dadd (1817-1876) who was in a mental institution. It is a very intricate painting, and the lyrics of the song by Queen do a fair job of capturing the painting.

Verdy, it is such a joy to get to watch a young person experience these great early Queen albums for the first time! Side Black of Queen II, which you just reacted to, is one of the most unknown, under appreciated, and unrecognized sides of music ever. Queen made fantastic music on their first three LP's, in addition to so much later, but most people are not aware of these tracks, so hopefully some of your subscribers have had their ears and eyes opened. Please don't take too long to get to the album Sheer Heart Attack! If you thought Roger Taylor's high vocals were something here, just wait until you listen to the next album!!

Second lead vocal on "The March of the Black Queen" is Roger Taylor (15:26-15:31).
By that time, they didn't use keyboards / synthesizers. Everything was performed on real piano, sometimes they used organs

My favorite Queen album and the Black side is my favorite side. I was lucky enough to see Queen in 76 from the front row and interact with Brian May and Freddie during the show. Freddie gave me a rose and Brian let me request a song. I would have asked for March of the Black Queen but they played it so I requested Keep Yourself Alive. ✌️♥️🎶

"The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke" is based of the painting by Richard Dadd which was painted while he was incarcerated in State Criminal Lunatic Asylum of Bethlem Royal Hospital AKA Bedlam. It now resides in the Tate Britain Collection. In the Song Freddie basically starts at the top and works his way down the painting describing the characters depicted

Because of their massive success as a pop rock band in the eighties, many have forgotten or never knew that Queen were known as a heavy band in the seventies. Metallica covered their song 'Stone Cold Crazy' which is on the next album.

Hello Verdy... I can't express how much I enjoy watching a young person appreciating the variety and versatility of Queen's music... so I just subbed in hopes you will continue this journey thru the rabbit hole of Queen's catalogue...
The talent of these four musicians are beyond compare to any other band...
The harmonies and the variety of these guys is what gathered my attention when I first heard them in 1975... and I've been a die-hard fan ever since...
Freddie's songs on their first two albums were loosely based on the fantasy stories he wrote for his little sister as a child concerning the Seven Seas of Rhye and the various kings, queens and ogre (cyclops) battles... so entertaining... and different!!
Brian May (Sir Dr. astrophysicist) wrote and sang "Some Day, One Day" and Roger Taylor (the drummer extradonaire) wrote and sang "Loser in the End"... all are college graduates and Freddie was an art major and designed and drew the Queen logo and designed a lot of the costumes he wore on stage in their earlier years...
    Thanks again dear and... blessings.
P.S. Yes, you were absolutely correct, the intro to "Ogre Battle" was the outro played backwards... and FYI, both Freddie and Roger had four octave ranges... Freddie let Roger sing most of the ultra high notes as you experience them in later songs, but the "scream" in the beginning of "Ogre Battle" was Roger... so terribly awesome...
BTW, Brian and Roger are STILL (after 50+ years) performing with Adam Lambert and just finished their North American tour, I believe they are doing some touring in Japan and elsewhere next year, but at 70+ years old, I believe Brian wants to stop touring... I truly hope he stays home and writes new music, he is such an awesome writer... Both Brian and Roger also have wonderful solo career catalogues of music you may want to check out... just SO talented, like I said, they are the GOATS of rock-n-roll.... LEGENDS FOREVER.... (sorry, I can get a little winded)... blessings.

Years ago in High School, when we were deeply into D&D, a friend created a whole adventure based upon this album. with clues included in the lyrics (the climax was when we discovered the White Queen we were helping to reclaim her kingdom and the Black Queen we were fighting were actually two personalities of the same incredibly powerful fairy magic user). I later returned the favor using songs from "In the Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson and "Point of Know Return" by Kansas.

Seven Seas of Rhye was supposed to be the first song on the second album because the last song of the first album was a half completed version of it and it would have been a perfect transition. Then Brian May wrote 'Procession' and screwed it all up!

  • @Kuesel68
    @Kuesel68 5 місяців тому

The first (white) side was mainly Brian's work with Roger composing and singing Loser in the End while this (black) side is a string of Freddy's compositions with March of the Black Queen with Roger on vocals as well. Queen never did such a perfect heavy but proggy glam-art album anymore. Artistically this is where they hit their early peak. Before that they were labled Zep-imitators with a touch of Slade and Sweet which were quite popular in the glam rock scene at the time and yes, Queen got a lot of influences by them. But with this album they emancipated from this labeling creating something very original. By the end of the 70s til Freddy's death they were not innovative and proggy anymore but followed more the mainstream music - even though their songs were still good, THIS album was them at the spearhead of the contemporary music.
BTW the high notes are by Roger!

The Ogre Battle intro WAS, in fact, being played backwards - if you're listening for it, it's very clear where they switched to playing forward again. This album side might very well be my favorite Queen album side of all time. Just amazingly intricate stuff - heavy rock, artfully done.
RE: The high notes - that's typically Roger Taylor, a man who could be the lead singer for any other band (and DOES sing lead on his own compositions with Queen).

Yes, they started the song backwards. The last moment of the song was the same thing you heard at the beginning but played backwards.
March Of The Black Queen is basically Bohemian Rhapsody part 1.
Except for piano and harpsichord, there are no keyboards on the first 4 or 5 Queen albums.
Yes, it's the same as rye. The h is silent.

No Keyboards involved at this Time 😉It was written down on every Album 'til the 80's. They were proud about it !

      Synthesizer .

@@kirbywilliamson2942 Yes you are right about that notification i got it mixed up, yet they also didn't use Keyboards at this time. Maybe they should have written "No Keyboards and Synthesizers". They used them only for live concerts. All the keyboard/synthesizer sound was done with analog methods or with The red Special. So if you think you hear Keyboard or Synthesizer on a Studio Album you are wrong.

Ah...the good old days. Mono was recorded over and over and then combined for stereo. Fades and flips, Even the masterboard was an instrument. Never again though...digital killed the recording star.
