- Film School - P.S. - San Francisco, Reunion Show, Live, Fri. 9-5-14, Front row at Bottom of the Hill. The original lineup reunited for just one show to celebrate drummer Donny Newenhouse's 40th birthday. Greg Bertens: “Welcome to the class reunion of 2006!” :P
Other Tidbits:
“We haven’t played in a little while… it’s good to play here for our first… our only show” said Bertens. Indeed, it has been 8 years since this lineup of Donny, Justin, Nyles, Jason and Greg has played together! And the last time Film School played a concert was in February, 2011.
The evening’s focus was on “old-school-Film-School” from 2006 and before, encompassing the 2006 "Self-Titled" release on Beggars Banquet and the 2003 "Alwaysnever" release on Amazing Grease. Donny's other bands were also playing on the bill, Hot Fog and Peace Creep, so Newenhouse impressively played 3 sets in a row!
After the song “On and On”, Nyles Lannon threw out a huge bag of glow sticks and inflatable party soccer balls. As Greg explained… “Because it’s a party!”
After the show, everyone gathered in the back to further celebrate Donny’s birthday. The room was decorated with a custom made celebration banner and matchstick books with a baby portrait of Newenhouse on the back. They then brought out a cake and sung Happy Birthday to him as he blew out the candles.
I talked to Greg Bertens during the after-party and he confirmed that this was just a one-time show, and that there are no plans to re-form Film School, unfortunately. However, he said he may do individual projects with Lorelei Plotcyk/Meetze and others in the future, which was nice to hear. I also talked to him about what it’s like living in Los Angeles, considering San Franciscans aren’t generally fans of the LA style, lol. But he joked that he actually enjoyed it, saying that he didn’t think that he would, and as long as you know where to go and where to stay away from, like where all the celebrities are, it’s nice. :P
In addition to the band’s reunion, Adam Marks, the psych projectionist and creator of the ‘Compare’ music video, was also there to do the amazing visuals for their set.

This song is truly beautiful and haunting and the melancholy lyrics fit it perfectly.
Turn the light off
And file these thoughts away for a day
Turn the light off
He files his thoughts away for a day
Take our time off
Better to hear the way that you say
Take our time off
Better to hear the way that you say
She read his fortune
Two years and you're free upon completion
"I'll try my hardest
Just don't confuse me with my confessions"
The final season
He hoped for a crowd at his reception
He weighed his options
And left them behind for no good reason
I'm not changing these thoughts at all
The way that we answer the things that we’re told
No I'm not changing these thoughts at all
The way that we answer the things that we’re told
So turn the light off
I'll end with a perfect splash. Today
