  • Finally after 32 years of being on this planet, and as a keen petrol head, I had the opportunity to drive my first Porsche. It definitely didn't disappoint either.
This video is more about capturing the enjoyment of driving than it is a car review. Hopefully it creates a little bit of entertainment for you guys.

I bought my year 2000 C4 Carrera I. 2003 and never regretted it. Goes like stink, doesn’t cost a fortune to service, ear to ear smile every time I drive it. Now, cut price access to the joys of 911 ownership ; just do it

My 996 turbo sunroof never rattled. Seriously considering getting back into a 996 but a normally aspirated this time.....this video is convincing me 👍

Hey James, that's interesting to hear. Would you consider a naturally aspirated 996 more involving to drive than a turbo?

Well it seems that I am not the only 996 40th anniversary owner commenting here.
The 40th anniversary car came standard with the sports seats and for some reason you seem to have the base seats which, in my own opinion, are significantly inferior.
Also the sunroof lining can rattle if the mounts crack but these can easily be replaced.
And yes the dash is dated but you learn to like how basic and focused it is. I bought the car almost new when it was one year old, I have driven every generation of Porsche before the 996 and everything until the 991 ... And I own a second Porsche but I will never sell my 996 unless I absolutely have to. I love it and I consider the 996 to be the last 911 sports car before the 911 (non GT2/3) transitioned to become grand tourers.

Thanks for the comment, I loved the car. The seats were a little unsupportive though.

The clutch pedal should not be heavy, unless it needs a new one.

    Nice review
I knew I had to own a Porsche one day, saved up enough to buy a cheapish 996 but also tested a newer for the money Cayman S on the day, though the 911 was great, the Cayman really blew me away and so that's the one I bought and not regretted it for a second.
So much fun to drive 😉

Thanks for the comment, I'll have to get my hands on a Cayman at some point to compare. I've heard great things about them and like you I'd really love to own a Porsche one day. Glad that you are enjoying yours!

@@carshizz1185 yes make sure you do get one, you won't regret it, just got to keep them maintained like any other car but they are very solid cars and well built.
I love the 911 but honestly if you have say £13-20k then the Cayman S is a bargain.

@@johns5493 I was trawling Autotrader lastnight, seriously tempted. Think I'll have to wait for the summer though as I've not long had my Peugeot and Mrs Shizz would not be best please if I went out and bought a Porsche right now. Thanks for the advice though.

@@carshizz1185 just do your research and read lots of road tests from the past and watch what owners/testers say on UA-cam about the early Caymans, this will show you just how awesome they are.
Don't worry about the bore scoring( though get an inspection done) it is a lot of scare mungering by nonPorsche people, it can happen but its rare.
Get the S version, it's fast like a Porsche should be and handles like a dream.
Get it, enjoy it and I bet you fall in love with it 😃
When the time comes, good luck 👍

From the front it has a C4/C4S bumper, if the car you drove is that model it would explain why the 911 felt planted as those models are 4 wheel drive. The 2WD 911 C2s is definitely worth a try and they can be bought for as little as 15k for an excellent example (on condition you can live with IMS time bomb that will need fixing for 8k). Aside from that it is a solid car.

The car I drove was the Jahre 40 edition which came with the wider body kit and 345bhp but still rwd. This model seems to fetch a premium due to it's upgrades and relative rarity. I would love to own one but it's the IMS time bomb as you have mentioned that puts me off slightly. I have a friend that has a 996 C4S as he couldn't get on with the rwd car, which is odd as he's quite a handy racing driver with a lot of experience. Anyways thanks for the comment.

@@carshizz1185 I have the 40th. My engine was replaced after IMS failure in 2011. This means that Porscha used the most recent and compatible IMS design when the engine was replaced. So...buy one that either already had the IMS failure. Otherwise, get one, change the oil, and just keep an eye out for it. The chances of failure are said to be low the begin with so the IMS failure issue has become something of a boogeyman.

@@Mike_Jones281 thanks for the info Mike. The 40th is a great car and I would imagine a fairly safe investment.
