The wonderfulness of Nick and this band was that they arrived at a time that was post punk and New Wave was taking music by storm. Haircut 100 was a 180 to this movements in a way with their jazzy horn filled songs, cheeky playfulness and “preppy” fashion. I myself modeled my look around Nick at that time. He’s a wonderful musician.
FINALLY!!!! Been waiting for you to get to them! So cool that Nick was able to join you for this one! Others to check out Fantastic Day and Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)
Nick mentioned that Haircut 100 loved The Beat. You would love this band, too, which was a leading group in the TwoTone phase of British reggae in the early 1980s
Haircut 100 used to offer fruit in their gigs, IIRC, some kind of let's be healthy approach. Not saying I approve an offensive comment, just wondering if maybe it wasn't.
I love this! I saw them last week (with Howard Jones and ABC) in Los Angeles, and I wish Haircut 100 could have played a lot more songs - Nick was clearly having a great time. Took my 27 year old son and he's now a big fan!
I saw them in San Diego last Wednesday & clearly Nick, Les & Graham were having a BLAST!! Nick was smiling, NO beaming from ear to ear!! 😁😁😁 They were so gracious and approachable after the show too! I wonder why Blair didn't come though? 🤔🤷🏾♂️
FINALLY!!!! I've been extolling the virtues of Haircut 100 for years to Jay & Amber. Great sound, great rhythm guitar, fantastic percussion and awesome horn section..... everything you love Amber. A great happy smiling and summery sound to lift your spirit on the bleakest of days. A shame there is just one album to listen too, but its an absolute belter!!!!!
Incredible to have Nick on your channel. You are bringing some incredible talent to your channel. Haircut 100 made such an impact. This song is so good and a classic from the era. The live version is incredible! Hadn't seen it until now and they sound great! I love how Amber is so quick to identify the story behind the lyrics and often times see something in the lyrics that we don't. Clearly, Nick never thought about it that way. Bravo!
I've been waiting so long for you to review Haircut 100 on your channel. Glad to see Nick Heyward is still doing music. He still sounds the same and looks great. This song brings so many memories when I was living in England during the 80s. I always found Haircut 100 as a palette cleanser compared to some of the punk rock bands of the time. You should check out "Nobody's Fool" & "Fantastic Day". Nick Heyward was also a solo artist. I hope you can check out "Whistle Down the Wind" which was a favorite of mine. Great job on the interview. You're killing it. Thanks for the memories, Nick.
Love Plus One sounds like it was written yesterday, not in the early 80s. Nick looks incredible for 63, his all round positivity towards life and youthful demeanour must be a big factor.....he still sounds fab too.
Man, as a quirky high school kid, this song and this band made those of us that felt different feel cool. Great musicians, cool songs, and definitely NOT U.S. standard top 40 fair. Loved it. Still do!
OMG!!! 😲😲 I had a sneaking suspicion that you guys were going to react to Haircut 100 after their concert in Oklahoma!! I don't know exactly how many times I've posted about them and that you needed to watch "Love Plus One" on the channel, but I sure am glad you did!! I also knew that you would LOVE this song! "Favourite Shirt" (Boy meets girl) & "Fantastic Day" no doubt should be next. Thanks guys so much for getting Nick & the band on R/S reacts. You've restored my faith in the universe! 😊 Wooo-hooo!! 👏🏾👏🏾
Another absolute legend on your channel. My Brother had their 'Pelican West' album, like many others in the 80's. I'm sure my brother knew that I "borrowed" it on a regular basis, and played it to death. Haircut 100 is pure happy music!
One of my favorite bands from the early 80’s. But there were honestly so many amazing things happening in music at that time. Post punk, new wave, new romantics, rockabilly, ska, two tone, electronic music. There were just so many fascinating new sounds. The bands from that era are still with us and so many of our children are now listening to them too.
I bopped along with Love Plus One in the 80’s but I love the matured and mastered version. Lightning can strike to make you a pop star but to remain one or grow as a talented musician takes effort. It’s so good to see you guys again! Enjoying it.

And from the list above, well, it would be hard to pick one let alone 10 tracks to listen too and I think you guys have reacted to at least 2 of these already, but i'm sure your subs will pick one or two out of this list to listen to. As a kid, the music and television in 1980 felt slightly dark and dystopian, then in 1981 it felt a little lighter with a lot of socially conscious music with a splash of colour, but 1982 for me as a 15 year old felt like a full on celebration of music. There was so much to choose from and even Top Of The Pops seemed vibrant and colourful. It's hard to explain but that's my take on 3 years of music.
Great interview with Nick! I remembered this group playing on MTV and was one of my favorites from the the early 80s! Beautiful new version with the orchestra!
Nice surprise! Love Haircut 100 - used to play their first album a LOT! By the way, you should check the original video for Love Plus One. You get to see Nick scantily clad swinging around on a vine! Thanks for having Nick on and sharing! Peace from SF
OMG this takes me back! I adored Haircut 100 back in the day, and also Nick's solo album after Pelican West (a lovely summer album). Loved the Love Plus One updat, but the original was faster and the sax solos were amazing. So happy you interviewed Nick. He's as charming as ever. Thank you!
I forgot about The Beat. Please guys check out Mirror In The Bathroom by The Beat. Probably the record they're most remembered for, they also did a great cover of Smokey Robinson's Tears Of a Clown. They were a Ska band similar to The Specials.
Thank you for inviting Nick onto your show guys! I've been watching you for a long time and never thought you'd have one of my favorite bands/artists on! Nick has written some brilliant sonngs over the years. I'm off to Preston (UK) next week to see H100 perform Live!
Wow,Haircut 100,one of my fave bands of the early Eighties.Charming ,fun and quirky.Lovely relaxed interview with Nick.Other great bands around that time would be The Belle Stars and Kid Creole and the Coconuts. Both pretty much guaranteed to have you smiling and swaying.

Love this band! Can’t not smile hearing their music! He recorded these songs when he was 19 and they’re so complex! He mentions the group “The Beat”. We called them “The English Beat” and they’re great too.
Thank Y'all so much, this is one of the 1st songs that came out in the early 80's that I remember so much and It brings back so many Fantastic, and wonderful memories for me. God Bless from Texas
Eeeeasily one of my Top 10 to15 80's synth pop songs of all time!! From the minute I first heard it I was hooked. The cadence, melody, bass overlays, and sax bits of this song are all so unique and next level.
The album this is from, Pelican West is such a gorgeous album! I have an original old pressing and it has audiophile quality sound, the production and engineering on it are superb!
Oh my gosh, I had the BIGGEST crush on Nick when I was about 15-16 years old! I played this song over and over and over. Thanks so much for chatting with him! And if you want a song with some STELLAR xylophone, please do "Gone Daddy Gone" by the Violent Femmes. Possibly one of the best xylo riffs in rock music!
I remember this song. It didn't play on pop radio for very long because it was in the top 40 for just maybe three weeks. I had recorded the billboard top 40 radio show one week while it was in the count down and would listen to it for the next year long after you didn't hear it anymore. I still bring up that video from time to time on youtube. Always liked that song. Most Americans probably don't remember it, and sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who still checks it out. Glad to see it here.
Was a favorite of mine as a kid and introduced it to my daughter about 22 years ago and now she tells me when she gets married, she wants it as her father daughter dance.
Haircu 100 is touring on my side of the country while I'm on vacation on the other side. I hope I get another opportunity to see them!!! And yes, total heartthrobs. I got my boyfriend an off-white cable knit sweater for xmas.
Haircut One Hundred's: "Calling Captain Autumn" is a "non-hit must-listen!" 🤘🤘 and "October Is Orange (Day 1 & Day 2)"; "Nobody's Fool" and "Boat Party" all deserve their own shots! (above the other songs people, here, are mentioning!)!
1981 was my first rear at uni. Pelican West came out just after Christmas in 1982. They had a great run for a couple of years. Sounding even better now, IMO. You need to try some Thompson Twins now...
PLEASE!!! If you have Nick Heyward there, react and invite him to play (a la Howard Jones) his solo song "Kite". That's his greatest song in my humble opinion, and what a gem of a pop song it is. Should've been a massive hit.
The early 80s was a musical magical time in the UK 🇬🇧. There are so many great bands and songs 🎵 from that era. The Cure, Paul Young, The Eurythmics, Simply Red, Duran Duran, The Smiths, Queen, New Order, Tears for Fears, The Human League, The Style Council, Depeche Mode, UB40, Simple Minds, Go West, Level 42. I could go on and on. It's one of my favorite eras of music, just behind the 70s.
Yes, the 80s were great. Nice to hear the memories of your guest. How he talks about the lake and the pines, it sounds like a rendering of a Bob Ross episode. Thanks, Nick!
First Howard Jones, now Nick Heyward?! You guys are killing it!
@adamp2029 They've had Robbie & Mick from "Modern English", Jane Wiedlin of the ''GO Go's" on Rob Squad & the creator. Plus many others.
Agree!
Bananarama next? They've had some great new music and remixes recently.
Couldn't have said it better myself, greetings from England. Always reminds me of the bratpack era films love plus one
My faves then and still now xx

Nick Heywood,OMG! Haircut 100 had some great tunes back in the 80s. Great to see you Nick, you look fabulous btw.🎼🎵
I can't believe he's in his 60s... he's gotten sexier with age!
I've been waiting for this for years and a Nick Heyward is LIVE!👏👏👏
Nick mentioned that Haircut 100 loved The Beat. You would love this band, too, which was a leading group in the TwoTone phase of British reggae in the early 1980s
Jay & Amber, hope Nick brings their “Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)” and "Fantastic Day" next !!! Those bouncy horns are just for Amber!!!
That album is 80"s perfection and remains timeless!!
All awesome tunes!
This album was one of our college favorites. Conjures up some wonderful memories.
@@seanswinton6242 no it was NOT!!!!
Nick’s guitar strumming is so groove heavy.
Nick Heyward was definitely an early childhood crush and he's still adorable.

@@phantomcollector1976 So?
@@phantomcollector1976I think it’s safe to say that Jay and Amber wouldn’t want you watching their videos, let alone commenting on them.

At this time he was dating a teenage Patsy Kensit.
