  • Craig was on the pod last year talking about his glorious Beatles book ‘One Two Three Four’ and he’s just published a collection of his writing called ‘Haywire: the Best of Craig Brown’ - Private Eye diaries, columns, reviews, essays and other assorted comic gems. It’s very good indeed. “Satirists,” he reminds you, “are on the side of things going wrong.” Here are just a few of the topics that stumble into view in this very funny and illuminating ramble - John Stonehouse, the strange life of Arthur Lowe, “all entertainers are disturbed”, Bruce Springsteen as dictatorial bandleader, Liz Truss’s speech patterns, meeting people he’s lampooned in print, Kenneth Williams, Bruce Robinson’s preposterous Jack the Ripper book and how Lieutenant Pigeon is anagram (but of what?).

One Two Three Four: The Beatles in Time is a fantastic book. One of the funniest music tomes I've ever read. The stuff on Yoko and "Magic" Alex is priceless in it's accuracy and turn of phrase.

Love these podcasts. Especially the ones where you interview authors. I have bought so many books after watching them. Mark Paytresses book about Glam being the most recent.

Mr Brown loves going against received wisdom, and slaying a few sacred cows along the way. His writing cuts to the quick - and is all the more refreshing for that, because he uncovers hidden truths in dusty corners!

i wish Arthur Lowe's Potter series was shown again. The partnership between Lowe and John Barron was wonderful.

i had worked out the anagram 'teenage loin input' and I thought, nah, that can't be it. I went on to listen to 'mouldy old dough' for the first time in my life, and i can exclusively reveal that I'm rather underwhelmed

Sitting here wondering, as I'm reluctant to look it up, whether the Lieutenant Pigeon thing is just Craig Brown starting a very obscure urban myth 😊

Re: the Beatles and Get Back and whether the film has changed perspectives. I really enjoyed Craig Brown's book on the Beatles 'One Two Three Four'. Insightful and full of interesting stories. However Brown doesn't have much (any?) time for Yoko Ono and I felt at times the book slipped into tired 'Yoko spilt the band' tropes. Chapter 108 in particular is pretty scathing of her. Curious if after 8 x hours of Get Back, Brown's opinion on Yoko had changed at all?

Worth seeking out the transcripts from the Twickenham sessions and seeing just how much of Yoko got cut from Get Back. Not that she does anything horrific but she's a lot more vocal with her suggestions. I would be surprised if Craig Brown hasn't seen these or at least be aware of the contents.

@@drumgold23Sure - and of course the surviving Beatles + the Lennon & Harrison estates got approval of the final Get Back cut - right? I've no idea if Mr Hepworth and Mr Ellen were in any way suggesting to Mr Brown if he personally felt a re-assessment of Yoko was due in light of the way Get Back unfolded.

Craig Brown is great - though he's not as funny as Roger Lewis
