Thank you for bringing up the physics of the actual people. In that shot of avengers, he would realistically have passed out from the G's, his organs would have compressed, and he would have serious damage in his spinal column. Or when superman catches someone, the sudden change would most likely snap the persons neck. That's why I like Quicksilver in the X men films. He Braces people before running around with them. He has learned throughout the years to throw things X fast and X hard so It doesn't just explode from suddenly being moved that fast. I especially like the scene where the school explodes. He throws people into water, cushions, anything to break their fall. Really smart.
When the suit catches iron man, it doesn't just stop, but moves on a "rounded" trajectory, so his forces are reduced. He could pass out for sure... But humans can live through a ton of g forces.. in the 1940's a rocket sled test pilot survived over 46G's... The average rate of fall for a human, based on gravity and the drag from the air, make humans fall at around 120mph... So he's not going all that fast. He probably felt 10g's or so, but would live with little or no ill effects.
He is flying in back in a curved line if you look at it. Because first he slowed down with his thrusters from his hand. Then he changed his body position from feet to head falling, to head to feet stand. While he does that there is curve. He switch his foot thrusters on when he is mid curve to standing and flying back. So his organs are not dropping straight instead they are following the curve. So tony would feel the Gs of the momentum but not dye from it. But it is a small curve to be notice.
Well, part of it is because they changed things from the comoic. In the comic it was pure "Realistic physics". (In part because he frakked up with grabbign her.) In the movie, well...they made it a BIT more clear she's dead by having him be seconds too late. (In the comic, she was falling face-first, and he grabbed her by the heel, which is implied, possibly incorrectly, to make things SO MUCH WORSE)
If you zoom in on the web he shoots to catch her, it turns into a hand as it reaches out. I've always thought that was creepy and kind of dope simultaneously
Except Iron Man 2's final battle with Ivan Vanko. Ivan's head was terribly animated. It looked like it was cut out of a video and just placed on top of the scene
LoTR trilogy. Even after all this time, I can't believe how much of those movies is just CG. I'd love your take on how they achieved it. The Extended Edition bonus materials is an absolute goldmine of information about their practical effects mixed so skillfully with cutting-edge CGI (for being made in the late 90's / early 2000's). They really do not look outdated even today.
It was an ingenious combination of practical and cgi. when the heroes were sword fighting orcs in close up shots they were real actors in amazing makeup and costumes. CGI was mostly used for long establishing shots to show us scale and numbers. Jackson knew cgi up close at the time wasn't great (Gollum being the exception where they put a ton of work into just him and even then he looks dated now in some shots.) so when they used it the camera was far away. For shots of armies they would have the first few lines of soldiers be actors and then as it gets further away they used cgi for the rest which gave a realistic feel of scale (Game of Thrones has used this as well which is why their battles look astounding).
LoTR had a lot of practical effects. F.e. to make the Hobbits look small, they build the sets in weird angles, so filming from a specific perspective make them look smaller than Gandalf. In the Hobbit trilogy Jackson just said "fuck it" and made everything a green screen with shitty CGI.
Agreed. It's absolutely astonishing that the CGI in the LoTR trilogy still holds up almost two decades down the cinematic road. There are a couple wonky shots, for sure (Legalos and the oliphaunts, anyone?), but only a few. The rest are simply golden and often look better than most CGI scenes in films today (my jaw still drops just seeing the Balrog swathed in flame).
The biggest problem with modern films is that the people in charge don't care for them anymore. Using LoTR as an example, Building all these sets and thinking about ways to film scene s in a certain way to help with the post-CGI requires thoughts and work. But Jackson didn't care for the Hobbit, those movies were nothing but a cash grab, so he went "well, can't we just do that scene in front of a greenscreen and put in all the stuff later? i want this shit wrapped up before 5 o'cock" It's not a matter of time in most cases and the CG is sometimes even more expensive than building sets, but if you're a lazy director, its a blessing for your movie.
Watching this two years later is insane. I found this channel as a high school senior and this was the first video I watched. now I'm gonna be a sophomore in college with a one wheel (which I wouldn't have saved up for if I didn't see wren's one wheel videos). life's crazy

Sam if we’re speaking with physics then she would still die if they were elastic because elastic stretches and she’d still hit the ground pretty damn hard
@@pablo_supernova not only that, but the web in the middle of her body would make a pressure point holding it, so her legs and head would still "fall" (by the First Law of Newton). To actually save her he would need to shoot webs in all of her body and break the momentum. It's like throwing something in the air and catching it without moving your hand and moving your hand with the objetct to slow it down
Even though they changed the death from her breaking her neck from momentum to her head physically hitting the ground and breaking her neck from the force of trauma, it's still a very sad way to die I think we all can agree.
ShiroBolic he only had the reactor to create a magnetic field to keep shrapnel from entering his heart from a previously incurred injury. He gets the reactor removed in the third movie and used it as a battery for his suits.
in ALL of the iron man movies, you see him shrug off falls and weapon impacts that would actually be fatal. something doesnt have to breach his suit to kill him. and on that note, we dont really get to see how strong the armor actually IS - we never see him shot with anti-armor weaponry. lots of explosives and rifle-caliber bullets, but no shaped-charge or sabot rounds. stand him in front of an abrams main gun, and he would have a hole blown straight through him. later suits can be hand-waved better with him adding better (presumably active) protection. note the scene in civil war where rhodey's iron patriot suit gets its power knocked out and the injuries he takes from his fall.
YES! Also, not to mention he was just thrown through laminated glass that is an inch or more thick and remained conscious and mostly unscathed The aorta thing, I think the suit uses the same tech as his repulsors (hand cannons) to absorb trauma and stuff, so it's plausible, without the suit he's only human!
Alternate title: Three men freak out over face shadows. In all seriousness, I actually love when people with professional insight enthuse over details I never would have known to be excited about, whether it's archeologists yelling about buttons and jars, or CGI guys celebrating beautiful shadow work. :)

Have you thought how his razor would be? He'd have one for the flat surfaces on his face (and body) and a different one for this chin. I imagine a mini plough like razor with multiple heads that get inside each crevice of his chin.
He probably has some kind of a cream he can rub on his face that painlessly dissolves his hair. It's actually a little disappointing imagining him manscaping.
andre byrd At least he does it himself. Ronan the Accuser had a whole team of people to get him ready in the morning. Nothing says “compensating” like an entourage of servants who keep you from having to look in a mirror or touch your own skin. Thanos ain’t no poser, yo.

8:20 The suitcase is as heavy as the suit, but it's supposed to be a lighter suit. Thinner plates and less armour than a regular Iron Man suit, can't fly as high or as fast, no weapons beside the basic repulsors, etc. It's like the stripped-down travel version of Iron Man armour.
@eating sugar no papa in Addition to what Hugh said, it is fucking complicated to make these suits look realistic You would need to have designers, engineers and metal workers work together to create a suit like that and in the end it'd still Look like shit
I thought they were off. The lighting was just odd in some scenes and they looked way to clean. But I was like na they would be dumb enough to cgi suits. That's just a waste of money.
Had to do with the fact that hey used less CGI since they actually made a suit. There are a few videos on it. One of the main reasons the first one will always be my favorite.
Davy Jones is still one of the most impressive fully CG character that's ever been put to film, and those films came out in 2006/2007. Especially considering the amount of complexity involved with the realistic tentacle beard and human-amphibious skin tones.
They are talking about the physics of Gwen dying, when I sit here blanky thinking I could survive jumping out of a plane and jumping off a chair before I hit the bottom.
Do a Star Wars video and do comparisons of how the CGi changed throughout. It would be cool to look at lightsabers, full environments, and how they switched from practical to cg for characters like Jaba and Yoda. Love these videos!
I was going to suggest they do this with multiple series that have older films and newer films: compare LOTR with the hobbit, star wars 1 2 3 vs. 7 8 9, Firefly vs. Serenity, matrix 1 vs. 2 and 3, Harry Potter 1 vs. 7, etc. It's interesting when you contrast how they did things the first time vs. later when they had more $ and tech, and see when it makes it better vs. when it got worse.
One thing that would be really cool for the Black Panther fight is to have it stay dark, but there's more purple and gold lining on it, so it kind of silhouettes them. This would get exhausting in the long term but short term it would be pretty cool
Do an episode about cgi used to de-age actors. (Jeff Bridges in Tron: Legacy, Michael Douglas in Ant-Man, Sam Jackson in Cpt. Marvel, Carrie Fisher in Rogue One, etc.)
I really thought the Civil War Tony Stark deage was the first one they did that was super believable. All the other Marvel deages after that have been miles ahead of what anyone else has done imo.
Add “The Chronicles of Narinia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe” to that list. I think the animal effects in that still hold up for the most part today.
@Joshima M To be fair though, technological advancements aside, a vast majority of people would agree that LOTR is visually more appealing than The Hobbit. Take the Cave troll in Fellowship for example; that troll is a whole lot more convincing that Azog in the Hobbit.
Well Lotr is 80% practical effects. The 20% had loads of time dedicated to making it look good. Rather than the Hobbit, which was 70% cgi, and therefore had less time to properly polish it all, so Gollum looks amazing, but the white orcs don't.

@@averyplaysguitar apparently the issues with black panther was due to the producers. They gave them only a few weeks to work on the final fight scene which is nowhere near enough time.
That's why i enjoy Iron Man movies the most (except nanorobot stuff from infinity war): all that metal thigs are very understandable and can be compared with some real life reference. So when things like Iron Man suits are made realistic, you actually can say that it looks real, because you can imagine it as something in real life. Other stuff like Mjolnir, alien spaceships, magical mumbo-jumbo may look cool, but will never look real, because there is nothing in real life that you can compare these things with.

@The Rue Morgue And the way Strange beat the villain. That was foreshadowed, utilized Strange's character to the fullest, made perfect sense, and was just all-around clever.
It would be an absolutely incredible tribute if you guys did a remaster of the Black Panther fight scene. It would be insane and practically impossible, but if you did it... Holy crap it would amazing!
When Iron Man broke his fall by blasting away with his thrusters, the first thing I had to think about was the poor people below him. they would've been baked and blasted away at the same time if that much force was directed down at them. Remember the Messerschmitt 262? That thing of course weighed much more than Iron man, but it couldn't accelerate as fast either... so would it be fair to say the engines have comparable total final thrust to Iron Man's? Anyway, the Me-262 went from being a tail-dragger design to having tricycle landing gear, because it literally melted the runway. You do NOT want to be near the exhaust of a running jet or rocket engine. EDIT: now I think about it, I wanna see an R-rated version of that scene after all. I know you found better scenes, but Iron Man saving himself could be a masterpiece of unintended consequences.
It was more like saving them too....he wud survive that fall in the suit....but those dudes being squished by a metal suit with that acceleration......they dead. I think they shudhve had him shoot a beam towards his right so he falls to the ground BESIDE them and so he lives n so do they n no physics issue
I'm usually am one of those people who instantly notices whats cgi, atleast big cgi stuff, not little blurred objects in the background. But I had no idea, black panther attacking bucky on the roof was 100% cgi, because that looked so real.
I feel like a solid thousand of the views for this video are from me just watching it to see Clint’s reaction to the neck snap. One of the greatest moments in the entire VFX Artists React series.
You do realize the movies don’t perfectly follow the comic books, right? Sure, she died from her spine snapping in the comics, but in the movie, it’s clear that even if her spine did snap, what actually killed her was smashing her skull into the concrete at like 100 mph. That’s an instant kill.
@@Violet-Spark I don't think anyone was making an argument to the contrary, just making a comment. He literally said he was just noting that because it's a comment you can make.
The scene is confusing because in the comics spidey can't tell if she died due to him catching or due to impact. It's like if he was directly responsible for her death or the impact from the fall was.

@MR FREEZE-98 ahahahahaha nope

"KiNda??!?!?!?"
Omg i laughed so hard at this moment 😂😂😂😂
I find it funny cause you can actually hear the crack of her head hitting the floor in the movie but they had the video muted xD
Well, part of it is because they changed things from the comoic. In the comic it was pure "Realistic physics". (In part because he frakked up with grabbign her.)
In the movie, well...they made it a BIT more clear she's dead by having him be seconds too late. (In the comic, she was falling face-first, and he grabbed her by the heel, which is implied, possibly incorrectly, to make things SO MUCH WORSE)
I loved that they were so caught up in it they HARD clipped the mic
If you zoom in on the web he shoots to catch her, it turns into a hand as it reaches out. I've always thought that was creepy and kind of dope simultaneously
Same, best part of the video by far.
I agree, the Iron Man series had really good CGI.
Except Iron Man 2's final battle with Ivan Vanko. Ivan's head was terribly animated. It looked like it was cut out of a video and just placed on top of the scene

When doctor strange came out, I was absolutely amazed by the FX they had without blur on certain scenes. Amazing.
For sure , would love to see that
It was an ingenious combination of practical and cgi. when the heroes were sword fighting orcs in close up shots they were real actors in amazing makeup and costumes.
But Jackson didn't care for the Hobbit, those movies were nothing but a cash grab, so he went "well, can't we just do that scene in front of a greenscreen and put in all the stuff later? i want this shit wrapped up before 5 o'cock"
It's not a matter of time in most cases and the CG is sometimes even more expensive than building sets, but if you're a lazy director, its a blessing for your movie.

In the comic she doesn’t hit the ground, the instant deceleration breaks her back....
Rare moments when physics actually makes sense in comics
I thought his webs were elastic?
“His aorta would rip from his heart”
Not to mention that he would’ve burnt the skin off the people who he was above when he started flying....
well he has an stark reactor iron man has no heart tbh but please correct me if im wrong
YES! Also, not to mention he was just thrown through laminated glass that is an inch or more thick and remained conscious and mostly unscathed
The aorta thing, I think the suit uses the same tech as his repulsors (hand cannons) to absorb trauma and stuff, so it's plausible, without the suit he's only human!
I think about that each time I watch that

I feel like a solid thousand of the views for this video are from me just watching it to see Clint’s reaction to the neck snap. One of the greatest moments in the entire VFX Artists React series.
Just a comment: Gwen dies because her spine snaps. The comic actually has the onomatopoeia "Snap!" in that frame.
That’s sick (in a bad way) I didn’t realise that
You do realize the movies don’t perfectly follow the comic books, right? Sure, she died from her spine snapping in the comics, but in the movie, it’s clear that even if her spine did snap, what actually killed her was smashing her skull into the concrete at like 100 mph. That’s an instant kill.
@@Violet-Spark I don't think anyone was making an argument to the contrary, just making a comment. He literally said he was just noting that because it's a comment you can make.
When I was a little kid, I was wondering why he died xd
The scene is confusing because in the comics spidey can't tell if she died due to him catching or due to impact. It's like if he was directly responsible for her death or the impact from the fall was.
Oh god I laughed so hard at KINDA?!
btw please do dceu films too I wanna hear about the costume designs
Edit: Also black manta shots in Aquaman idk why but I thought some shots are weird... (wow so many likes thanks)
Especially Aquaman
I think you'd have a lot to talk about with Blade Runner 2049
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 2!!!!!!!!
"KIND OF?!" Oh man that reaction was gold
“She kinda hit the ground”
“ *KINDA!?* “
films that had CGI that no one knew about, e.i. the white suits in Endgame.
like mad max fury road
that was CGI?! holy fuck they looked so real well done.
Like Hugh Jackman driving in Logan.
@@jonathanmasters4128 To be fair, the biggest CGI piece in Mad Max: Fury Road was the canyon. About 99% of the movie is practical.
I noticed the helmets were cgi because how fake their faces looked in them but not the suits
"She kinda hit the ground."
" *KINDA?!!* "
The timing on that was perfect X'D
Doctor strange producers: inception looks pretty cool.
CGI team: ight I got u fam
Inception producers: Dr strange comics look pretty cool
CGI team: ight I got u fam
KaosFireMaker you’re an idiot if you think Dr. Strange was a better movie than Inception??
@@jobsmine You're a idiot if you thought he say that.
@@KaosFireMaker except it wasnt cgi, so...
@@jobsmine You cant even read properly but you call other people idiots. Tells a lot about you.
Agents of Shield would be a great thing to react to
am I the only one who remembers black panther final fight scene looking WAYYY better
Edit: thanks for 2k likes
I just rewatched it and now I don’t know how most of the suit fight scenes made it in to the movie
Yeah the scene looks way better when you watch it
I swear lol
Once these guys point something out, you can't un-notice it
I mean, when you're caught up in the story you can forgive bad FX. That's how most of old Dr. Who and Star Trek works, lol
