- Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Iron Man 2 are both sequels to successful origin films, and they each set the stage for the next Avengers film. But Winter Soldier is widely praised as a political thriller that moved the genre (and the franchise) forward, while Iron Man 2 is widely regarded as a stumbling block. In this video, we tell you why.

What do you think of Iron Man 2?
It was good, but was nowhere near as good as the winter soldier
Pretty okay , even tho it really was a set up for the avengers movie
Villain should be replaced with stronger one
Iron Man 2 has one of the weakest MCU villain.
Lord Venjix that is true
''before we start, does anyone want to get out?''
The BEST. And what did you think of the callback in Endgame?

Cap
In the elevator
@@leonardobraynen1524 oh man I really miss Cap
I just realized how much of the hydra reveal hurts to cap since he sacrificed literally everything including HIS LIFE and HIS LOVE for peggy to destroy them
Especially with Peggy being one of the start ups of SHIELD so now that massive thing in her life she worked for was tainted the entire time by the same thing that caused him to lose her in the first place
Cap isn't my favourite hero, but he has the best character arc and with winter soldier one of the best sequels ever made.
I actually think Tony Stark has a better arc. He changes, where Steve stays static. He just adjusts his worldview to fit into a changing world
@@ScreenCrush that's true. Been arguing over it for too long. Both changed, one became selfless the other became selfish, they were their opposites from begging to the end. Though, iron man transformation was felt, while Caps transformation was way to slow and static. We didn't even anticipated him staying in past with Peggy. Nor was it ever shown that he intends on doing something similar. That was just a dumb move that destroyed what Agent Carter achieved.
But I have to say that Captain Americas triology is more connected to the whole story(shield and hydra) than iron man's triology, which is mostly centered around Tony stark(iron man). Maybe that's is why we see slow transformation for Captain. Captain Americas trio was one of the core stories in the grand scheme second only to the avengers. The others focused more on the characters.
I do prefer Tony's overall character arc by far tbh. But i think both opinions are fine. WS is also not my favourite MCU movie or sequel....
@@masoodjalal1152 Also I agree tha CA trilogy is more connected to the MCU. I personally really like IM3 as a mostly standalone movie and I don'T think connectivitiy - or even scale - make a movie better or worse by itself. That said, it'S clear that the CA movies were much more connected, but I think that's mostly because they spanned over a longer time. IM itself is a standalone movie, that sets up the broader universe but you can easily watch it by itself and then leave it at that. IM2 is still a phase 1 movie, so again you can mostly watch it by itself, though much like Age of Ultron it suffers a little from 'setting up the sequels'. Half of IM2 is to prepare us for the Avengers. But as it'S still quite early and there were many creative choices made after IM2, ultimately there's little it can really connect to as well. IM3 is one of the (if not the?) first phase 2 movies, right after The Avengers. It's in a way an Epilogue to both IM1+2 and the Avengers, but again this is where the connectivity ends. The further we move along in the MCU the more connected we get. CA WS is a late phase 2 movie and CA:CW even phase three, at that point the characters, sets, powers etc. are firmly enough establihed that you can just move the pieces from prior movies across the board.
The IM trilogy is pretty much the tirlogy that sets up the MCU. It lays the ground work. CA can take that and carry the story along.
@@ScreenCrush I agree Tony changes more, but Steve didn’t have to change, because he was already a great person
"Winter Soldier" is not just a good MCU film. It's one of the GREATEST SUPERHERO FLICKS EVER PUT TO FILM!!! It stands alone! It needs no real connection to any of the other superheroes to work! It transforms the foundation of a Cinematic Universe, without completely taking a dump over all the films that came before it!
It's a once-in-a-lifetime movie! And it is still, to this very day, probably the MCU's single greatest movie, from a story standpoint!!
It really is a special film. And in just a few scenes it introduces a great new character, Sam Wilson and pays low key tribute to the troops. And....
Iron Man 2 is also a movie.
@@tarunnayak8898 Ok???
@@tarunnayak8898 Nah, Winter Soldier too good
@Rohit Mohan You should definitely watch it. It improves Cap a lot and is a very very good movie
Keep it in your pants, fanboy lmao.
In iron mans defense, Iron man 2 was a phase 1 movie when the writing was still not as natural and the actors were still getting comfortable as well. Iron man 2 was made just so it made sense why tony was in the first avengers movie as well. Love cap and tony though
Another thing was that iron man 2 was made (I think) before Disney acquired marvel. There was a group of people who decided what went into movies and they wanted it to really tease the avengers. Winter soldier was after Disney acquired they gave more freedom to the directors to decide what to put in a movie.
But Iron Man 1 is easily one of the best, if not the best MCU movie tho
Ik sucks a lot
I was so awe-struck in the theatre when I saw n heard an actor like Robert Redford say shit like "Hail hydra"......that alone made this movie awesome for me.

@@derbaba5266 Exactly. He didn't get Rogers' shield either after almost 30 years of friendship. Just my opinion though.
Yeah I agree. Iron Man 2 is still a decent movie, but it's one of the worst in the MCU. Winter Soldier is one of the best. I didn't even realize how similar they were until you pointed out all of the similarities though haha.
I still think its better than captain marvel and black panther.
ant man and the wasp is the worst iron man 2 is still kinda good to watch movie
in my eyes, iron man 3 is MUCH worse than iron man 2. it literally contradicts scenes set up from 1 and 2 just for the sake of it to be "different"
@@keyblader2k6 in my eyes, iron man 3 is much better
@@creamy925 obviously a lot of this is due to subjectivity and i can put down an entire essay here but ill just address the contradictory scenes i mentioned.
1) iron man 1: i cant take the shrapnel out of my heart. theres no technology or person in the world to do it, so i have to live with this for the rest of my life.
iron man 3: i completely forgot about this one surgeon dude i met years ago who somehow randomly can actually take it out and all he needed was an electro magnet and tweezers.
2) iron man 2: its my armor and my technology. its my responsibility and i cant risk it falling into anyones hands.
iron man 3: literally tosses the most powerful piece of human made technology into the ocean, so that if anyone finds it, they can legally keep/sell it. what, no one looks for stuff in the bottom of the ocean? tesseract, captain america 1.
It's sad we won't see Iron Man and Captain America for a long time in the MCU.
we *WILL* never see them again in the MCU. Dont give us hope.
don't worry man. we'll see female versions, maybe trans versions and they'll be teens. enjoy EDIT: they have to be some sort of racial minority too. that's important.

Best solo movie
It's a tie between Dr Strange and Winter Soldier
Excluding the ensembles films then Infinity War wins hands down
Guardians 1 is up there though.
I prefer logan, spiderman 2 and infinity war over it
5:30 Even Hydra had character development
Lol yeah
Personally a big fan of both movies. I would say Iron Man 2 is over hated. Iron Man 2 is really just a popcorn flick and a whole lot of fun. Winter Soldier is of course a fantastic movie and one of my favorites. Great video as usual 👍👍
Yeah, it's definitely got a weak plot with some ham-handed world building, but it's still a lot of fun to watch. Tony at peak snark in the senate hearing is fantastic, and the fight with the drones at the expo is one of my favorite MCU fight scenes. I think both it and Dark World get an undue amount of hate for the crime of only being "okay" movies.
@@Deris87 ...Oh, I'll take IronMan2 over Dark World any day. It may be my least favorite of the Marvel movies. I thought IronMan2 was just fine.
I never realised there were so many parallels that's mad
This thing is like an onion...
Except that most of them were very very surface level. You can do that with pretty much any two movies.
maybe they have several story templates on rotation. and the movies are being "approved" by the same person (and i ain't talking about the director/producer) who prefers certain shots and story elements

I disagree about The Winter Soldier owing its existence to Iron Man 2. It's one of the select few MCU entries that can be watched as a standalone.
It feels like you completely disregarded his point with that statement.
I really don't feel like that. None of the winter soldier makes much sense if you disregard the prior mcu entries.... I mean, I guess you could watch it... but I really wouldn't recommend watching The Winter Soldier out of order...
I don't think he was talking about previous setup like knowing what Shield or Hydra were. I think he meant that WS wouldn't be nearly as good if Marvel hadn't learned from the mistakes of Iron Man 2's development.
The Winter Solider imo is the best mcu movie and one of the best superhero movies ever made. Also iron man 2 isn’t as bad as some people say he is
Iron man is a great trilogy franchise and had its potential but its just poorly written. Ironman 2 & 3 had little to nothing contribution on character development and the MCU as a whole. Meanwhile, CA movies have been very integral to the MCU. First Avenger introduced Hydra and banished Red Skull, Winter Soldier dismantled SHIELD and made cap doubt about authoritarian control, paving the way for Tony to create Ultron (surprisingly, cap's character development between TFA and TWS is deeper than it looks like) and CW made half of the Avengers rogue that led to Thanos getting the stones. Irom Man 2 and 3 feels like a standalone sequel
Wow!!! You are brilliant
I'm basing my understanding on the conclusion of this video. They used the Iron Man movies as a platform to experiment and understand the process of film making in a gigantic cinematic universe.
Good thing phase 4 is going to pick up a lot of those leftover plot lines like the Ten Rings and potentially A.I.M
That's what I was going to comment 😂. Nice one👍
I feel that Iron man 2 & 3 don't have "character" development. But, instead. "Perspective" development. Of course, this could count as character development - however! Tony changed his mindsets and functions in iron man 3, which was a bit before Ultron and civil war. It's what led to Iron man not just being a "lone man with tools to function against every situation."
That's why all of his suits were destroyed, because in the end - Iron man decided that it wasn't his suits that were important, but the people around him. His family. That's what developed Ultron, he wanted to make a shield of iron suits around the world, so that *his* family wouldn't have to suffer anymore and eventually, with how he saw the situation in civil war, that is why he took to the sovokia accords instead of the captain's side. He wanted to protect the team as a whole because they were his family. This would lead to regulations at that point due to the accords, and it led up to him taking Steve's words to heart.
They would all lose *together*, as a family.
So, whilst it might not have much to do with the overall MCU universe, it certainly did have development on tony, at least in my opinion - thus it is why he saw things even more starkly (hehe, puns) contrasted with Captain America's views on what to do. But, it's possible I'm wrong pretty much entirely on this. I just think that tony did have development as a mindset.
Me, who loves Iron Man and the Iron Man trilogy’s and enjoys Iron Man 2: *feels attacked*
@KingUnderTheStars yeah that was weird, I didn't like that about Iron Man 3 either
I love iron man 2. And while i do love captain America winter soldier i think captain America the first avenger is the best cap movie.
I like iron man 2 cuz it's the first MCU movie I ever watched and I also like Captain America the winter Soldier cuz of the story
Dont forget Iron Man: Homecoming Iron Man: Far From Home
I don’t see why they saying iron man 2 is bad. But my favorite mcu movie is either Thor or captain America: the first avengers
I like both films but Winter Soldier is amazing. But wow I didn’t realise how many similarities they have. Edit: also you make really good points about Iron Man 2, I’ve never really thought about it like that but it’s interesting considering the story structure and what makes a film work or not work. Great video!
Cap has the best storyline in the MCU
Definitely the best trilogy so far.
MrPickle1168 without a doubt
Up until the last few minutes of endgame
naah
For Hax the last few minutes of Endgame were still about Cap and concluding his story
Actually, when I first saw Winter Soldier, I didn't realize how big the hydra-SHEILD plot was. I just felt like they recycled the villain. But after watching the whole MCU movies and re-watching WS again, I just realized how important the plot was. About Iron Man 2, it was good enough for me with some memorable scenes. I like to see Tony dealing with his stress and RDJ did it great. It showed that superhero also had flaws and problems even the rich and powerful one like Tony. But I have to say that I don't like the villain, the worst ones in the MCU.
"Ahhhh....thats's where you've been."

I think that W.S would've done just fine without any source material. On the surface level, it didn't look like Iron Man 2 at all, it was more complex and bits of the story were splashed here and there but formed a cocoon in the end. Iron Man 2 was a must more average story without any moral message and was only focused on the main protagonist instead of the narrative. W.S feels like an entire different ground, it was such a unique entry in the MCU that is still deemed as the best MCU solo movie by most fans. If Iron Man 2 was the source material, then i wonder how it's the worst MCU movie on so many people's list. Considering that you are saying it took most sotry engine from the IM2, it would've failed nonetheless but it didn't.
I don't think he's arguing that WS needed source material from IM2. I think he's saying WS needed to learn from the narrative mistakes made in IM2 to be able to be the refined product it is.
Yeahhh i agree that's why Captain America was the best trilogy of the MCU back then they even had one of the best actors in Hollywood and yet they were wasted e.g Ben Kingsley
Actually, looking from a perspective of finished storyline of Tony Stark, Iron Man 2 had the best possible keypoint - Tony's growth. His growth from a chldish "Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist" with little to no moral sense into a man who saved the whole universe. Both movies are good, and nether one is better. Because they're different and have a different scale. WS was about world-scale events and IM2 was about growth of a world saviour.
Except that he hadn’t saved the world yet 🤷🏻♀️
Winter Soldier or Infinity War is the best MCU movie. Fight me.

Recently re-watched Winter Soldier, which cemented my belief that...overall...this is the best MCU movie of all time. Strong in every way from open to close - great characters and acting, complex plot, but not overwrought, anchored in the real world but still "super-heroic" enough to satisfy. Tons at stake for each character, and for the MCU as a whole. As close to a perfect super hero movie, IMO, as I have seen.
Wrong!!!! Iron man 2 is not the one with the bird, it’s the one with a “BURD”
I really liked Iron Man 2. Great compelling bad guy in Whiplash. Introducing Black Widow as well as War Machine. Illustrated Tony's continuing breakdown.
Iron man 2 was a far cry from a top MCU movie. it would be in probably the bottom half. But. That does not say much, given the quality of the top half. Iron man 2 as not the best movie, but it was still very good. the action sequences were very well choreographed, and the villain made total sense, as well as helping to set up for homecoming. some of the transitions were clunky, yes, but they were also a very realistic way that at least Nick Fury would have info-dumped on tony. in addition, we don't know hardly anything about Howard stark. there was probably an agent in shield who he trusted to get the info to tony, and several fail-safes, especially if he has any similarity to his son. I would say that it is underrated, but far from the best.
I would take IM 2 over most of the X-Men films.
@@ScreenCrush I would take it over most films, being totally honest. but that is just taste. over most X-Men films definitely
@ScreenCrush
Are you a movie critic in real life? Your analysis about what works and what does not work in a movie is so spot on! 👍👍👍👍
I know I’m watching this really late, but what if Howard Stark knew what kind of father he was. He knew he was super busy and his mind wasn’t on raising his son. He scolded tony in the scene but then said he loved him and made all of that for him because he had big dreams for his son one day and their relationship just wasn’t one that was super affectionate. Which made the scene in End Game that much more impactful. And to your point about him dying when tony was an adult, by that time I’m sure Howard saw his potential but also saw that he was being reckless and maybe wasn’t ready to pass the mantle to his son. Not knowing he was going to die before he had a chance to pass the torch. Which leads to Tony getting worse and becoming the man he is in iron man 1. 🤷🏽♀️ I’m new to this but after seeing your take on the scene I felt like you could have gone a little deeper into the relationship. But I agree that SHIELD ruined the movie haha
Ironman II will always have a place in my heart as I had just got my first home theater when it came out, so I replayed it constantly. Yes, there were mistakes but Marvel has recovered and the film still has enough great scenes to make it enjoyable.
You messed up with calling Howard leaving Tony the message in some expo outtake reel a stupid plan. It wasn't a plan, he was thinking out loud at that moment, Howard never planned on dying and would likely have given this info more directly to a much older Tony Stark had he lived and been unable to complete the work himself.
I just enjoyed Winter Soldier more because it was filmed in Cleveland when I was working downtown. One picture I have shows Fury’s SUV, with a stunt driver, that has bullet holes in the rear driver side window that make a smiley face. It can be seen for a moment during the film.
Winter Soldier has the stronger emotional theme with the pathos reaching its pinnacle during Cap and the Winter Soldier's epic "I know you're in there somewhere" fight.
Ironically Howard Stark's death and the founding of SHIELD come back as the major plot points in the Captain America films.
Remember how warner brothers crammed every justice league character onto a laptop 😅😂
Surya Singh marvel subtlety do it with a map in iron man 2 that led to the bigger payoffs! And warner bro’s do this🤦🏽♂️ they will learn from it!
I liked Iron Man 2 but the Winter Soldier was wayy better. I personally liked it because there weren't just global stakes but also personal stakes. Also, it had Bucky. And as RDJ once said, "When they have a Bucky, then we'll talk"
The point of Nick Fury is to put howard stark in to the picture so he can discover the new element. Second iron man 2 is before avengers while the winter soldier is after the first avengers movie, so both are in different time lines.
And the fact that Tony just solved it's problems because S.H.I.E.L.D gave him the solution is the most lazy way possible to conclude Tony's arc.
These are some of the best video-essays out there on Marvel and DC-- EPICNESS. Thank you.
Come on now..Ironman movie's literally gave platform for MCU saga....IM2 was only 3rd movie with no inkling of main endgame plotline. They made the movie as much flexible as they can to give a way to upcoming movie's..... Point being IM2 wasn't that bad and it was more fun. Caps movie's are real story telling stuffs.
The Only True failure in the Iron Man Trilogy is that we didn't get Iron Man vs the Mandarin, despite the Ten Rings Easter egg in the first movie. They managed to do a trilogy where the proverbial Batman didn't face the proverbial Joker. Where Superman didn't face Lex Luthor. They didn't finish the fight.

Very well said. I love the MCU in general but I do think IM2 had a lot of shortcomings. However, I definitely agree that it was a very important stepping stone to the MCU's success. I loved that they learned from this movie's shortcomings and applied them to future films. Many props to Marvel Studios for learning from their mistakes.
The moment you dove into Iron Man 2's flaws, my guess was exactly what you said in your conclusion. Iron Man 2 was about understanding the basics for a cinematic universe and Winter Soldier reaped the benefits of experience.
Yes, 100%. Winter soldier had a light touch, with no unnecessary parts. At least half of Ironman 2 was unnecessary
I have watched captain america winter soldier more than 50 times.
I got into MCU after watching the WS. I just saw Iron Man 1 and The Avengers before that. WS introduced me to Bucky. His reveal made me curious so I finally watched TFA and decided to watch all MCU Phase 1 movies in order. It’s true what everybody says. WS is one of the best movies in the MCU. A surprise since Captain America had this stiff, boring image before but WS gave his character more depth. The opening scene is straight out of a espionage movie like the Bourne series. My Top 3 MCU movies would be
1. Endgame
2. The Winter Soldier
3. Avengers
I just finished watching Winter Soldier for the first time and of all the marvel films I've seen, it's definetly my favorite. I can't remember being so invested in the story during any of the previous movies. Considering their leanght and my short attention span, I usually find some parts of all the films boring. However, this movie had me absolutely hooked.
However, My excitement for it wasn't quite as high during the last fifty minutes or so as it had been before. It was by no means bad, I just didn't find it AS thrilling as some of the precious parts. That being said, it might just have been cause it's literally in the middle of the night and I'm really tired.
Not even close. I was stuck to the screen with the winter soldier
All Captain America films involved story arcs that contributed to the entire MCU, whilst keeping CA as the central character. The film titles even suggest this - CA: The First Avenger, CA: The Winter Soldier, CA: Civil War. So while CA is the anchor to the films, the stories affecting him become more interesting. Iron Man's films are just numbered, indicating a focus on the main character at the expense of supporting characters. Once you've seen IM1, there is nothing more to learn about him or this interactions with others until you watch the Avengers films.
Captain America, with the shield being physically and literally passed to Falcon, there is clear continuity, with interesting ways the story arcs can go. We didnt see that hand over between IM and Spider-man. Spider-man has not appeared in any IM movie, so I'm less invested and a little annoyed with Spidey tasked with carrying on IMs legacy, when Spidey's own story in the MCU has yet to be embedded.
We know how and why Falcon and Bucky are CA's BFFs from CA2. After several movies, all we know about IM's BFF's - one is a soldier who wears a sub par Iron Man suit and the other is head of security - for a one man army! It didnt help that they changed the actor for WM, a change that was handed very badly.
IM2 introduced Black Widow as a stereotypical 'secretary' type, but the character was poorly fleshed out and overly sexualised. Principally remembered for single handedly beating up Hammer's security - beauty and brawn, just a capable sidekick. In CA2, we learn more about the super intelligent, highly skilled, humorous, spy, who saves and was saved by CA. They are equals. She is more than a sidekick, she is an Avenger. Cant say the same for War Machine.
CA2 is regarded as one of the best films of all time. CA2 is near perfect, with a superb cast, fantastic plot, brilliant direction - heck this movie finally put Marvel Studios on the map. CA2 was far better than CA1 - and CA1 is a great movie. IM2, while a 'not-bad' movie, isn't as good as IM1 or in the same class as CA2. It didnt concentrate enough on long term character or story development. If it had, maybe we would be looking forward to IM4, 5 and 6, with TV or film spin offs for War Machine, Happy and even Pepper Pots/ Rescue! And dare I say ... Iron Woman, the adventures of Morgan Stark.
It's telling that Iron Man will be remembered for his suits and heroic death. Captain America will be remembered for his entire story arc, the continuing stories of his BFFs, and the possibly of his return as Old Man Cap! Old Man Iron Man? No thanks.
OMG! clap clap clap clap! You are so right, a great film analysis!. Well done, soldier! :D

It's one failure is that people didn't realise that Steve knew about Bucky from TWS already, so they can't see that the AoU-Mjolnir scene doesn't make sense. Valiant attempt by the Russos with the retcon in Endgame, but it undermined their own character arc development with CA from TWS...
I'm pretty certain that, had SHEILD been around, with or without HYDRA in control , it would have made little to no difference as to whether or not Thanos would have been able to pull off his mission.

I must disagree with the premise of this review. The portions of IronMan2 where Tony watches the film of his
father while going over his father's last notes on the Tessaract, and then receives the message from Howard
Stark, speaking from beyond the grave, are perhaps the most emotional moments in any Marvel Comics Movie.
" What is, and Always Will Be, My Greatest Creation, is YOU !" And gives Tony the clue that unlocks the secret
that saves his life. Tony Stark then unlocking the secret, working with Jarvis and building the Accellerator to
make the new Element, are the sort of thing that can inspire any little kid to become interested in the Sciences,
and all the promise they hold out for humanity.
Thank you for making some sense out of it and connecting what could be connected. Your points are clear and your reasoning is good. yes it is still better then most DC movies.

Iron Man 2 did yeoman's work, and it was plainly obvious. But it was still a decent film. Winter Soldier, though, is just on another level and it is because the story is much tighter and more meaningful. It is really transformative and impactful on so many levels for the MCU.
clearly the winter soldier has a more solidified ideology and concept as the art of intensity progresses in the movie--and even if iron man 2 might not have succeeded in developing the heart of the movie it is really shown that it it has been one of the main tying knot to the MCU.
Excellent analysis. How about a video on power at Marvel, how it all went to Feige?
Bruh that whole segment and edit of Fury with Tony was GOLD. i wish that was actually in the movie and how it went; just Tony feeling LOST as hell.
I love both films, I actually liked iron man 2, yes there are a few problems with it but I thought it was a good movie. But yes winter soldier is definitely better than iron man 2.
Did you say that Iron Man 2 didn't work? The movie was great. RDJ being hilarious as always yet at the same time is spiraling out of control cuz he's dying. His and Pepper's relationship. The introduction of Black Widow. War Machine and the expo fight scene was great. Hammer's dance on stage😂. Hard to imagine anyone not liking it
I generally like these, and this one was an especially unique take on the standard formula 👍 👍
I don't agree. Tony's relationship with his dad is one of the scenes that hit me the hardest and I like to rewatch. Also the narration of Fury about who Howard really was just shows how much Tony had a dad, but didn't actually because he didn't really know him.
Is anyone even saying Iron Man 2 is better than Winter Soldier?
No
@@theaveragejoe7966 good
Every time MCU came out with a movie I was like this is the best one yet. That’s what I like about the MCU it did seem like the movies were getting better and better. I did love winter soldier though it had just came out after I graduated BMT and I have a very high admiration for PJs (Sam) and winter soldier is still one of my favorite.
This is the only time I disagree with you but I still love your videos and attention to detail is A-plus
I love these comparison videos. Also, as much love as I have for TWS, Iron Man 2 is okay, I'm ... I'm good with it.
Before Watching:
Iron Man 2 is great! why all the hate?
It had SO much work to do and it did it while having a lot of fun.
Never understood why it got so much hate, it was the 3rd movie and FIRST in the Disney era MCU
After Watching:
Winter Soldier was amazing, but still why all the hate for Iron Man 2?
Disney just got a hold of the MCU, Iron Man 1 was amazing but basically a testing ground and The Incredible Hulk did not really land for most people even tho it is alright and only gets better with MCU connections and time.
IM2 had it's work cut out for it, Cap 1 shows his origins and the building blocks of Shield, IM2 did the same in the now day to show where things are, who the players are and Thor 1 expanded the reach Shield had thus showing the movie goer that SHIELD is a large force not to be messed with.
If this was all left for the last few min or post credit scenes then going into THE AVENGERS that movie would've had it's work cut out for it, explaining who Black Widow is and then having her meet Bruce Banner would've been a lot to have an audience not familiar with the characters to follow.
IM2 was the Phase 1 movie that really introduced a lot of players / figures / status of the world before we got to The Avengers, hell without IM2 doing what it did The Avengers would have felt more empty and lacking in areas and would have had to do a LOT of work to get everything up to speed to then tell it's story.
Say what you will about Iron Man 2, it's not perfect and the Villain is the weakest point (Venko) but Tony Stark IS that movie, SHIELD is introduced in a way I enjoyed in IM2, small scale and introduces us to the players we need to know, it was the opposite in Winter Soldier as they are shown as this MASSIVE Organization with countless players (As they really are) but IM2 made it digestible and going forward the stakes / events / depictions can be bigger and massive as the ground work was laid.
Long Story Short, IM2 had a lot on it's shoulders and it did an EXCELLENT JOB and I ALWAYS enjoy watching it over Thor 2 or The Incredible Hulk as it keeps me entertained, that Suit Case Suit Up scene is just amazing and watching War Machine being created and the characters of Rhody and Tony interact is just so fun, better chemistry with Cheadle I felt too.
I believe that Howard stark’s fudgy, lucky way of informing tony about the element and stark expo hidden meaning is so hard to uncover because that wasn’t how tony was supposed to find out. Howard had an untimely death, which links together the winter soldier and iron man 2. I think it is brilliant that tony finds out by a throwaway tape recording because it reinforces nick fury’s mindset of not trusting anyone. Howard was supposed to be a mentor to tony and pass it down in a better way

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 proved that we really, *really* didn't need an entire movie of Tony uncovering his dad's work. The reveal that Howard founded SHIELD was treated exactly as importantly as it needed to be - that is, not important at all. I thought the scene where Tony figured out the new element from Howard's model was the genius of the film - it saved his life, it reminded him that his father wasn't perfect, but loved him all the same, and I think *that* was the spark for Tony that made him realize that he couldn't save the world alone.
Point being, I obviously don't think IM2 is perfect, but I also don't think that you're giving the film enough credit.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2?
@@sunnymango1473 he used that as an example since amazing Spider-Man 2 was just a complete mess. Somehow iron man 2 is still better but it came out 4 years before amazing Spider-Man 2
I mean Winter Soldier had more drama because of the story line. Tony wasn’t fighting some ancient friend who was brainwashed and made into an assassin...like come on. For the story they had Ironman 2 was a solid and fun movie.
Honestly, I never liked the MCU's decision to have Hydra take over of SHIELD. While minor things would change, the overall plot of most of their movies would be largely the same, except for Civil War, probably. Now there's SWORD, which is pretty much the exact same thing but without Nick Fury. If it wasn't going to have much of an impact and eventually they replace it with SHIELD 2.0, why not just keep the original?
Also, if they knew SHIELD was about to be taken over by Hydra, why would they make their multi-season TV show about "agents of SHIELD" of all things?

I think IM3 is underrated
@@ScreenCrush Don't get me wrong, i'm one of the few people who loved Iron Man 3 (even more than the first installment for that matter). But in no way, is it on the same scale as Civil War, especially not after that horrendous fake marketing of the Mandarin.
Iron man 1 is better than First avenger.
Well, my opinion is that they're just as good as the other. We all have opinions and I'm certainly not against any of yours. What we should appreciate though is the fact that all these amazing actors brought us the Marvel films we love and they put so much hard work into them 😁
I always felt that Tony had accepted his fate and was trying to put his affairs in order on the dl. He intended for Rhodes to find him when he needed help changing his fuel cell, intentionally incited him to put on the mark 2 and fight as a tutorial, and then flat out told him to take it.
In their defense, Ironman 2 was one of the foundations. Everything that followed after was just an improvement upon it!
Absolutely. They were learning
ScreenCrush But you are absolutely spot on & it’s sad that Favreau didn’t get to finish his trilogy with 2 & 3! Studio meddling is rarely beneficial. George RR Martin said it best when he mentioned that without multiple successful books already written, the studio would want to have saved fan favorite Ned Stark. The catalyst for the entire story.
Iron-Man:Good
Iron-Man 2:The Best(because Sequels are the best)
Iron-Man 3:Okay
My only real complaint with Iron Man 2 was the lackluster final battle. It was far, far too easy for Whiplash to go down and apart from the drones he personally didn't present much of a threat to Tony or Rhodey. I would have liked to seen more struggle between them before overcoming, it made the film fall a little flat for me.
Howard stark recording a message for his son wasn't so weird. Lots of parents record messages for their kids even when they were babies or toddlers. As to why it's encrypted and buried, perhaps Howard weren't sure what kind of person his son will turn out to be. Because of this Howard wasn't sure if he really wanted to preserve the world changing technology. But in the end he left a hard to find, hard to decode message and left it to fate.
Senator Stern was always a Hydra agent which at the time was very 😦 and of course we didn’t know about that truth until winter soldier
