  • In our Sims Crane Minute, Bob Berry discusses the dangers of overloading and shock loading of cranes during heavy lifting operations.
As a load is lifted, the force of gravity and weight of the load apply dynamic loads to the crane structure. The boom of the crane is designed to redistribute these loads along the length of the crane, allowing the crane operator to lift heavy objects at great heights and distances.
Flagging, rigging and directly crane rental operations requires comprehensive knowledge of how the crane structure will react when these forces are applied. Attempting to lift objects of unknown weight, or objects secured to the ground, seriously increase the dynamic force applied to the boom of the crane.
Many accidents may be avoided when lifting and removing poles or objects secured in the ground, by first removing the surrounding soil. This will help avoid catastrophic failure of the crane and prevent costly accidents and serious personal injuries.

I’ve been a tower crane operator for a couple months now and found that there’s so many factors that can lead to an incident. Pressure placed on new operators or even ego can cause us to ignore or forget our training when thrown into the field. For example. I was thrown onto a new crane at 3pm (after being at a more relaxed site all day) to pour walls. everyone wanted to go home as fast as possible and tensions were high, I ended up shock loading the crane because I hoisted down to quick. Simplest thing as the difference in shadows on the jibs camera caused me to misjudge distance of the load because we were working on the top floor for a while. Another lesson learned in this career

@2:27 reminded me of how an operator that I respect told me the customer doesn't want to hear all that. He swings a little and throttles it up "That's all she's got boss." We both win
