தமிழ்நாட்டில் கார்மேகம் சோணைமழை பொழியும் மாதம் கார்த்திகை மாதம். கார் என்றும், கார்த்திகை என்றும் வழங்கப்படும் காந்தள் பூ மிகுதியாக மலரும் காலம் கார்த்திகை மாதம். கார்த்திகை எனப்படும் விண்மீன் கூட்டம் கீழ்வானில் மாலையில் தோன்றும் மாதம் கார்த்திகை மாதம். தமிழர்கள் தம் இல்லங்களில் 27 தீபம் ஏற்றுவது தான் சிறப்பு இவை 27 நட்சத்திரங்களை குறிக்கும்
கார்த்திகை மாதத்தில் வருகின்ற கார்த்திகை நாள் ஏனைய கார்த்திகை நாட்களினை விடவும் விமர்சையாக தமிழர்களால் கொண்டாடப்பட்டு வருகின்ற ஒரு விழா. மாலைவேளையில் வீடுகளின் வெளிப்புறங்களிலும், வீட்டு முற்றத்திலும் விளக்கேற்றிக் கொண்டாடுவார்கள். திருக்கார்த்திகை தினத்தன்று ஆலயங்களில் தீபத்திருவிழா நடைபெறும். பக்தர்கள் தீப விளக்குகள் ஏற்றிவைத்து வழிபடுவர். ஆலயத்தின் முன்புறத்தே வாழை மரம் நட்டு பனையோலைகளால் அதனை சுற்றி அடைத்து "சொக்கப்பனை"க்கு[1] அக்கினியிட்டு சோதி வடிவாகக் காட்சியளிக்கச் செய்து சிவபெருமான் சோதிப்பிழம்பாகத் தோன்றிய காட்சியை நினைவு கூர்ந்து வழிபடுவர். இல்லங்களை விளக்குகளால் அலங்கரித்து ஒளி வெள்ளத்தில் இல்லங்களை மிதக்கவைத்து வழிபடுவர்.
கார்த்திகை விழாவை குமராலாய தீபம், சர்வாலய தீபம், விஷ்ணுவாலய தீபம் என மூன்றாக ஆலயங்களிலும் வீடுகளியும் கொண்டாடுவர்.
• குமராலய தீபம்:முருகன் ஆலயங்களில் கொண்டாடப்படும். கார்த்திகை மாதத்தில் கார்த்திகை நட்சத்திரம் கூடிவரும் நாள்.
• விஷ்ணுவாலய தீபம்: விஷ்ணு ஆலயங்களில் கொண்டாடப்படும். கார்த்திகை மாதத்தில் ரோகினி நட்சத்திரம் கூடிவரும் நாள்.
• சர்வாலய தீபம்:ஏனைய இந்து ஆலயங்களிலும் வீடுகளிலும் கொண்டாடப்படும். கார்த்திகை மாதத்து முழுமதி திதி.
