I hope this video comes in useful for anyone researching guinea pig cages! As well as these good cages, I have found so so many unsuitable cages for guinea pigs on the market today! If you want to see what the 7 most common guinea pig cage mistakes are (and how to avoid them!), here's the link! 7 Common Guinea Pig Cage Mistakes to AVOID: ua-cam.com/video/UV_VtRreoIc/v-deo.html
For my 2 piggy’s I have the Midwest cage with all fleece in it but I removed the ramp out of it and they love it even more so I would recommend taking the ramp out if u get that type of cage.
I have a kavee cage and love it! It's plenty big for my two boars (I got a 2x5) and the fact it was ready to assemble made it worth the extra cost for me. I'm disabled and I was able to put it together myself, it's that easy. I have cable tied the grids for extra support when my boys do intense zoomies though loool
Another great vid! I HATE the tiny cages pet stores sell, this is really informative and stresses that pigs need lots of space. My two boars have a 6x2 c&c, nice and long for zoomies 😂 Beautiful models as always and I LOVE how you caption what your babies are saying!!! x
The Mid-West cage can be made into a a larger free floor space by removing the 2 pieces that join together and a small snip of the canvas panel to make it a large cage with no ramp. :) That is what I have done for our 3 piggies home.
Yes I have done that too for our 3 girl pigs! I’ve actually joined 3 Midwest side-by-side by cutting down the corners and duct taping the canvas, then joining the wire sides to make one big open area that just fits on 3 Home Depot folding tables. I line it with a layer of disposable puppy pads, then a large washable dog pad that’s waterproof on the bottom, then a layer of fleece (2 yards) and strategically placed pee pads which are the only ones I need to change frequently.
@@SqueakDreams I have cage photos on Instagram @myguineaherd if you want to see the triple Midwest layout! I just posted a story video that shows the cage.
I was really unsure about the Midwest cage because of the canvas bottom, however they've just recently come out with a fantastic liner for that cage and that's what made my mind up to get it. The liner has sides so it fits absolutely perfectly with no way for your piggies to lift the edges keeping the canvas bottom totally clean. The material the piggies walk on is velvet like and extremely easy to sweep up completely with a great waterproof bottom. No way I would have gotten a cage with a canvas floor without it. And of course I love that the Midwest cage is affordable and expandable!
This was PERFECT! I have a small cage but I wanted to update to a bigger cage, so this was very helpful! I love the cage size chart with the piggies on it.😁 Update! I decided on the Midwest cage back in January and just this week I bought a second cage to expand! So far the piggies LOVE the extra space! 😄👍🐹
thank you so much!! i’m planning on getting my first piggies soon and i’ve been trying to figure out what cages are good and what sizes are needed. so many companies try to sell cages that are just too small. i almost got the Mid-West for two piggies, but after watching your video that’s a bit too small and now i’ve got my eyes on the kaytee one. again, thank you!! you saved me from getting my piggies a cage that is too small. update: i’ve got my two piggies and I decided to go with a 3x4 c&c. they love running and jumping around!!
Love the vid ❤️ I had a wooden and very heavy DIY cage for my two boys, but now I want to purchase a 2x5 CC cage. The reason is 1) I like how it looks 2) it’s more spacious than my DIY cage 3) it’s easy to by liners that fit.
I'm a new Giunea Pig Dad and I got the mid west for 1 young (4 month old) piggy. I quickly realized that he wanted more space and a friend. I expanded the space by attaching some C&C like walls to the outside and leaving the cage door open. This gives him about 24 sqft with his cage and attached open courtyard. Then we got 2 more 3 week old males and they are very happy. But we still let them out into our loft for running time every day.
I got one version of the ferplast one for my two piggies. I had to temporarily start with the main part but having an extension made for my table so I can put the other part on. It's very nice for cleaning and my other half put it together in less than 10 min. So far I am very pleased with it.
Pedro you look so cute 🥰 having your nap in the cuddle cup! Interesting and helpful video as always, thanks Sarah. We have a large wooden open topped DIY piggy cage so my girls have loads of space which is lovely for them! xx
Ordered the ferplast plaza 160 earlier today. Glad to see it made the list. Unfortunatly no c&c type cages are available in my country so it will have to be enough for my two boars that will come home soon
I used 2 of the Midwest bars and 3 of the Midwest Canvases to make a 4 by 6 feet cage. Cut the interior walls and laid them down to make it nice and open.
I highly recommend fostering, it's a lot of work and it's emotional, but also amazing seeing them thrive! Rescues are often really helpful with enclosures too, and might have things they can lend you? 😊❤️
It's very rare for piggies to try jump out of their cage, they don't have any desire to escape like hamsters and other pets, their cage is their safe space 🥰 Your daughter's piggie may have jumped out because he wanted to get back to the cage.
@SqueakDreams ok! Glad to know, I plan on making a open plan cage! My young piggy gets easily frightened and excited and zooms fast, so I am insecure of her jumping then being able to catch her. I have a lot of big furniture that's not easily scooted if she gets under. I am giving her playtime in our bathroom, since she often runs in one of her fun boxes, it's easy to pick her and her box when its time to go back. I am having a difficult time trying to find the plastic cardboard big enough in my area. But I have already seen the cc online to order for her enclosure.
I just wanted to say that this video was awesome but as I was listening to you I counted the cage minimum and I counted 5.😂😅 It’s great that you pretty much included it onto every cage that you talked about and I think it was a great idea. 💕
Love this video I had a short hair guinea pig in a pet store cage not knowing much since it was my guinea pig. It died of old age in 2018 and after his death I couldn't get myself to buying myself another one, till this year that I decided it was time so absolutely happy I found this video and love the chart so I know what to invest for my next piggies
My husband and I wanted to start out right with our future adoptees and ordered a c & c unfortunately where we are in Australia there seems to literally only be cages that go up with lots of little ramps and I was so happy when we found c&c, I was curious what other options there were but I’m happy with what we’ve got, if anyone has any tips to a soon to be new owner I’ll be very grateful the last time I had piggy’s I was a child so I’m having fun refreshing my memory
First of all … ‘ laps and naps’… Pedro is just aaaaarrrrgh so cute. I do love the wooden enclosures best of all from an aesthetic point of view although I would consider the C&C cage setup for its versatility. Definitely would like something big enough for 5 piggies even though we will start with 2-3. Very informative as ever, Sarah. And those potatoes 🥰😍🥰😍
Thanks for the video, Sarah. This is the time to research and decide on the cage. It looks as though I’m really going to get piggies. I found a rescue 62 miles from my location and I am in the process of locating the nearest vet who can take care of my piggies. Thanks for all your great vids. They have been a BIG help to me in this decision process.
I just upgraded my 2 piggies to a 3’ x 3’ cage and they seems to love it. It does live on the floor bc I didn’t have enough grids to raise it up, but they seem to do better with the amount of space now then they did bc they were probably in each other’s business too much since they’re both sizeable pigs and they were in a Midwest
Thanks for your help a family member took in two little pigs cute 🥰 & My family member said they could not keep them to much work so I took them in and fell in love with them two males and I'm am trying to learn all I can to keep them as safe and happy as much as I can! So thanks for your help in my search for learning anything and all I can keep them good and happy 🥰
I have been using the Midwest for a while now. I do like that they are bigger. You can connect them to others. I ended up removing the doors and zip tied the cages together for a tighter seal between the cages. Also if you downsize from multiple to one or something everything folds up and takes up less space when storing. And if you move they're so much easier to transport than hard shell and wire cages. Downside to the Midwest would be the low edges... A lot of bedding and hay and poops find their way outside. The ramps/doors can take up space in the cage and I worry about snagging toes. Jumping over the low wall after removing the doors could be an issue for older pigs. Also my pigs like to chew the canvas and velcro straps so I have to replace the canvas bases (sold separately which is nice). Seeing the kaytee cage is similar but features some nice upgrades over Midwest prompted me to just buy two now. The higher canvas walls will hopefully help reduce mess. The larger size will be great as I have two pigs in their own cage because one of my 4 is a grump and only got along with his brother (who passed the other day due to neurological issues). More space would be nice overall. I also like that the doors open completely and you don't need ramps or anything. Not as thrilled that the openings are dictated by the canvas so I can't attack them end to end? I love these cages and I think I'll use the walls from the Midwest to set up a safe roaming area around the new cages and I can just open side doors to let the pigs walk in and out of the cages as they please. Thank you so much for putting this video together!
I have the Ferplast 160 cage and I wish I'd seen this video before going shopping willy-nilly. Finding the cage was like trying to find a needle in a haystack of nauseatingly unsuitable habitats. But I'm really happy with it, even if the base was a pain in the butt to assemble. I have the hutch add-on - without it the cage folds to just under 8 square feet, and it does that for easy travel. I see it as a strength rather than a weakness. It actually has two hides if you count the add-on that I have - the second level is too steep for pigs to climb but provides a dark, small space underneath it. So it's great if you don't want to lose open space by getting hides. The only major design flaw is the lack of a ceiling door, but the swinging front panel is good to tame pigs because you have to get down on their level to clean or modify their enclosure. There's no 'almighty mini-broom from the sky' to scare them.
I have something like the bonus play pen you talked about at the end. Mine is shaped like an octagon, I don’t know the exact dimensions but it’s pretty big. Big enough for a dog
Love your vids! Looking to adopt two piggies in the new year and although I've been around others piggies I have not own any myself so I need all the help and tips I can get!
I have a 30 x 60 Kaytee Open Living Habitat with the top on it. It gives me a 12.5 area. I got this one because the C & C grids were to far apart and would allow my cats to reach in. The top works great. I leave one side permanently closed because there is a door on that side. The other door is on the back side of the cage. I use small zip ties in some places because my cats are great at getting in places. I open and close the top with ease. I can cut the zip ties and open the side making it really easy to dispose of waste and clean the bottom.
I use songmics slot together plastic panels from Amazon and I could not recommend enough, they’re about £30-£40 and you get loads of panels and it’s easy to make, I use the panels on the floor as well with fleece liners as there are small gaps but for the size you can make and being able to add onto it it’s well worth the price
I got the kavee c&c cage for my two new girlie's after watching your video from last year. Really loving the wooden one as well, part of me wishes I had seen that a month ago 🙈
I'm thinking of getting two guinea pigs but I'm planning to buy a cage and all that stuff before I do. Where'd you order 3:57 or get the hide outs like those beds for them? I really like these that u have, please let me know
Manor Pet Housing also do wooden housing for guinea pigs with the plexiglass fronts. I have 6 cages made by them. They have standard sizes but will make a cage to your specifications design and size wise. They are pricey and because they are hand made they take a while for delivery but they are so strong and really well made. I put sticky backed plastic on the floor and sides to protect them (then puppy pads on the floor topped with a substrate). Well worth a look at their website. Also Little Friends do a 90x150cm cage which I use if I have a poorly piggie
I have both the midwest and the kaytee open living and my only complaint is that they manage to kick bedding out of both and that its a bit hard to keep clean if you don't use fleece liners and use bedding instead
Love your Channel ❤️ Can you make a video all about nail clipping, flea/worm/mite protection, hair trimming, bathing etc, just a general health video please 😁❤️
I prefer a playpen. Like one made for children. They perfect. They stand about 6 inches from the floor. The sides are tall enough that the can't jump out. And nothing can jump in. They're easy to clea and IF you need move them, they easily fold up. Plenth of room too.
The Midwest cage the little opening with the ramp you can actually remove that whole grid. My husband did that for our Midwest when we connected them together. So you don't have that ramp. Hope that helps.
I’ve been following (and REALLY enjoying) your videos. One comment I did want to make was on the Ferplast (?) cage. I actually have that style cage now, an upgrade after I, as plenty of others, discovered the inadequacy of the size cage I had prior. Only comment I wanted to make was that the little divider you see is actually optional. I opted to leave it out when putting the cage together. It WAS rather a pain to assemble. I will comment that, while TECHNICALLY adequate for my two piggie boys, I still really don’t feel like it IS adequate in the sense of giving them a fair amount of space to roam and do zoomies (which my boys very much enjoy doing). There’s also a lack of adaptability. Too few options available for adding a second layer for roaming or giving the piggies added space if needed. It’s plenty sturdy enough, so long as your piggies aren’t so rambunctious that they’re rattling the sides of the cage. My boys do seem to enjoy it fine, but maybe one of the curses of becoming a piggie parent is always finding yourself with the desire to either buy or make newer and bigger and better things for them all the time lol. All in all, it’s a good cage, and could easily be set up on a bench or a table, to add more space below. Thanks for the tip about finding it elsewhere! I was one of the folks who bought it for the expensive Amazon price. 😬 Lesson learned haha!!
Hi I hope you don’t mind my name as it’s a little similar to yours but just so you know your my biggest inspiration! I love your channel and everything you do! ☀️ 😊
I like a sort of c&c cage. I buy a songmics shelf. Than put PVC floor coating on the ground to protect my wooden floor. On top of the PVC I use Fleece. It's cheap. The Grits are easy to ensemble and the PVC is also easy to cut (you can do it with scissors)
It's so easy to build big spacious C&C cages which are comparably cheap and easy to rebuild. With a waterproof ground it's also easy to clean them :) There are many forums on the internet where people share pictures of their cages for inspiration 👍🏿
I have the mid west cage, and I can say that nothing stops my piggies from running laps. Storytime: one day I watched my guinea pig jump from the top of the ramp to the top of his hidey. And now he does that a lot, some times poops and lays there. It’s crazy 😂

I can cut the zip ties and open the side making it really easy to dispose of waste and clean the bottom.
i have heard of the midwest guinea pig cage [ so big , wich is great❗]
Thank you so much great information on cages❤
you really need to do best out door cages!! :) you will be surprised at how many people have their cages outside.
I have 4x2 c&c cage🧡
I have that same shirt love it!
Ah yes, hollister haha 😃
Hi Nicole, thank you and thanks for your request I'll see what I can do 😄
Would love this too!!
Thanks this helped a lot🥰
Thank you 😊 Squeak Dreams for sharing the knowledge!!!!
I’m getting my piggies in one week!! ( I have a C&C cage 😊, hope they like it! )
Love your cage would you share how you made it and what you used please?
I prefer a playpen. Like one made for children. They perfect. They stand about 6 inches from the floor. The sides are tall enough that the can't jump out. And nothing can jump in. They're easy to clea and IF you need move them, they easily fold up. Plenth of room too.
Great info, many thanks ☺️
LOVE this video 😊 I'm planning on becoming a guinea pig-foster ❤
The Midwest cage the little opening with the ramp you can actually remove that whole grid. My husband did that for our Midwest when we connected them together. So you don't have that ramp. Hope that helps.
i love watching you.I'm getting 2 girl guinea pigs for my birthday. I picked out the names the names are sadie and lielo
Thanks for this video, it is the first time I see the large square cage of Litlle friends in a review ;)
I just got the large Kaytee for around $70 on Amazon!!!
I used to have a guinea pig and I kept her in a 10 gallon tank but now it has its own room
great video :) as always!
Thanks for liking my comment 😊 :)
Sounds like a great DIY option! Thanks for sharing! 😄
@@SqueakDreams I think so too. I hope it helps some guinea Pig lovers.
Hi, what water bottles are you using? My water bottles I'm using for the giinea pig, leaks...
I use the living world or Kaytee glass bottles :)
What is living world?
I have the cage that was the first you listed, I have two pigs and with hide aways and stuff there isn't a lot of space but it seems like enough
I started my 2 guinea pigs in Midwest Plus, but ended up switching them to Kaytee Open Living 60 x 30.
I have a kavee 2 by 4 cage with the cover, I want to get the loft to go with it. I'm also convincing my parents to get another guinea pig
It's so easy to build big spacious C&C cages which are comparably cheap and easy to rebuild. With a waterproof ground it's also easy to clean them :)
There are many forums on the internet where people share pictures of their cages for inspiration 👍🏿
Thanks Chris, totally agree! 😄
I have the mid west cage, and I can say that nothing stops my piggies from running laps.
Storytime: one day I watched my guinea pig jump from the top of the ramp to the top of his hidey. And now he does that a lot, some times poops and lays there. It’s crazy 😂
Thank you so much for sharing this
I want to know, is it better to get the c&c cage with or without ramp I think thing without gives more running room
Hi! I am getting two guinea pigs soon and I had a hamster before in a 163×43cm cage size is it enough?
Why are the grids with 8x8 squares instead of 9x9 squares bad for them? Because the only ones i could find had 8x8 squares.
Maybe it has to do with the head sticking in the grid, wich can happen with small and petite guinea pigs?
Manor Pet Housing do a wooden enclosure for £127 in the UK. They do custom orders too. Very good quality.
