This is such great info. Thanks! I've tried monitoring traffic in my area using a scanner but it's often difficult to decipher what is being communicated. Just applied for a membership. Hope to be approved!

Whoa!!! I never knew about this TM5 or ATCS! Your video appeared in my feed, glad I checked it out. I'm finding in comments that some areas may not be covered in places that converted from CTC to ITCM. Regardless, this is worth checking into. Thank you for sharing this!
As railroads begin migrating their CTC systems to ITCM (COI), the loss of coverage that affects ATCSMonitor will also affect TrainMon5 as well. This is because TrainMon5 is dependent on the same technologies that ATCSMonitor uses. Therefore, before registering, please know that if you are registering for a TrainMon5 account because your area of interest was converted to ITCM (COI), that same territory will also not work anymore with TrainMon5.
Hello, thanks for the instructional video. I am new to the area, and I am trying to learn about TranMon5, one think I am unable to figure out is that once I launch a layout, how do I spot a train?

this might not stick to the video but ive been wanting to get a scanner but no matter where i look i cant find a frequency for my area i live in scoot city Missouri i just really wanna listen to the traffic on the railroad and stuff but just cant figure it out anywhere
The FRA page says Scott City MO is located on the Union Pacific Chester Subdivision, with a frequency of 161.55. (not sure if that's outdated) You could also try this: m.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/31771 I also did a bit of poking on the ATCS message board, it looks like the Chester sub has a live map layout you could use, but it hasn't been updated in four years. May or may not still work; worth checking. If it doesn't, you might be able to use a Software Defined Radio (SDR, or RTL-SDR) on a computer or Raspberry Pi to monitor the trains yourself. But that's considerably more advanced and will take a while to get the hang of. Really I'd recommend joining the ATCS monitor groups.io page and getting to know the software. Also definitely get a scanner. Best of luck!
So what’s the thing you were talking about at 2:16 for CSX? We get a ton of CSX action here in NE Ohio! I just submitted my request for TrainMon5 aswell.

Great news! There's another railfan who lives in South Lyon right now, Vincent. His comment was the first left on this video if you want to chat or maybe meet up for railfanning stuff. 2: Get a scanner if you don't already have one, I recommend the Uniden BC125AT and the Diamond RH77CA antenna. It will let you listen to train crews so you can hear them coming from 20 minutes away and get out to the tracks. I believe the frequency is 160.2300, but you can also ask the guys on railroadfan.com. 3: A secret thing I can't probably talk about here but can tell you about over email, joel.ricks.johnson@gmail.com There's a lot to learn but it's also a lot of fun! Best of luck!
I noticed that the subdivision I want to monitor is in the ATCSMonitor group but not TrainMon5. Is there a way to convert the layout as you said at 1:57?
There is, and you might be able to get some help converting it (probably Jeff R from RailfanAZ.com could point you in the right direction) or it's possible to do by yourself. I did the UP Gila sub back in 2018/2019. It's a hard process but the trainmon5 layout builder is pretty good. I think you also need permissions from the server hosts and layout custodian. Best of luck!
