Songs Without Words (Lieder ohne Worte) is a series of short lyrical piano songs by the Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn, written between 1829 and 1845. His sister Fanny Mendelssohn and other composers also wrote pieces in the same genre.
The eight volumes of Songs Without Words, each consisting of six songs (Lieder), were written at various points throughout Mendelssohn's life, and were published separately. The piano became increasingly popular in Europe during the early nineteenth century, when it became a standard item in many middle-class households. The pieces are within the grasp of pianists of various abilities and this undoubtedly contributed to their popularity.
The first volume was published by Novello in London (1832) as Original Melodies for the Pianoforte, but the later volumes used the title Songs Without Words.
The works were part of the Romantic tradition of writing short lyrical pieces for the piano, although the specific concept of "Songs Without Words" was new. The title Song Without Words seems to have been Felix Mendelssohn's own invention. In 1828, his sister Fanny wrote in a letter "My birthday was celebrated very nicely ... Felix has given me a 'song without words' for my album (he has lately written several beautiful ones)."
Mendelssohn himself resisted attempts to interpret the songs too literally, and objected when his friend Marc-André Souchay sought to put words to them to make them literal songs:
"What the music I love expresses to me, is not thought too indefinite to put into words, but on the contrary, too definite."

Absolutely marvellous. I love playing this myself. It is rarely played and not very well known compared to the other Mendelssohn Venetian Gondola song. Bitter-sweet and melancholy but so beautiful. Such depths of feeling. Mendelssohn was such a poet. He captures with this piece something really quite rare. Your playing is perfect.
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Грустная мелодия , как слезы под дождем, красивое исполнение. Спасибо за минуты наслаждения высоким.

Can you do Tchaikovsky’s song without words on piano? Thanks!
I will write it down for a future video :)
Hi Stanislav, I would looove if you could make a piano tutorial for Kisses Back from Matthew Koma (I would prefer advanced version but I would be very happy with easy one too), there isn't any on youtube and I tried to play it by ear but I didn't succeed so I am asking you if you can make it, keep up the good work, love your vids ;)
I will write it down for a future video :) Do you happen to have the score? :)
@@StanislavStanchev Thank you, what do you mean with the score?
@@kingdavid4463 You said you would like the advanced version. I figured you.might have it as a sheet music :) Will be easier for me haha
@@StanislavStanchev Ou that, with advanced version I meant like with other piano players on youtube, they make midi piano tutorials either in easy or advanced version, but the problem is that there is no good sheet music of a song Kisses Back, whick I like very very much, on the internet, so I figured that someone who can actually play a piano really good, can maybe help me.
@@kingdavid4463 Ok, I will take a look :)
Very sad
yeah
Hey sorry, how for the pedals?
Great interpretation
Thank you! :)
