Correction: two power supplies are not used one for each channel as I said in the video, but for digital and analog sections of the DAC. I lost my focus there, repeating what's usually true for amplifiers but not for DACs. Thank you Mike for bringing this to my attention. 👍
R26 vs qutest +LPS?
Thanks
Hi Srboljub🤜🤛 and thank you for mentioning me and my channel, it really warmed my heart. Big Thank You for taking the burden that was sitting on my shoulders for a while now, when I called it one of the best sounding DACs period. People are skeptical by nature, I'm very skeptical as well, but you know...good ears and good equipment could never lie. I'm glad that you found it as impressive as I did, it really deserves all the praise...so that others might challenge themselves and craft something similar. I did compare it with a few more top-tier DACs, but I didn't want to mention them, as people (probably) wouldn't believe my claims. As a side note, if Gustard R26 is already sitting on your table, then you can skip ALL Musician, Denafrips and Audio-GD DACs and you can probably guess why. Later Edit: Maybe we should do something together? ;)
You both did great and honest reviews, you should be proud
Sandu, I am a subscriber to your channel. Your video gave me confidence (and a couple of reviewers) to hit the “Buy Now” button about 3 hours ago for the Gustard R26. In fact, I asked Srboljub when he will be reviewing the R26 after his Ladder video.
So, I’ve been thinking of an R2R DAC for several months now, especially since I just sold my Topping D90SE. The R26, Denafrips Ares II, Pontus II, Pegasus, Ladder. Schumann all came to mind. Being in Singapore, Denafrips was my first choice. Pegasus was striked off my list with their QC, faulty units, total lack of customer service, not replying emails and a couple of users’ units went missing in the mail on their way to the factory for repairs just totally put me off.
Sandu, I bought the R26 after viewing your review. I am SO happy I did. Amazing sound for the price and I prefer it to my Matrix Mini-i Pro 3. As I have posted online, the R26 makes bad recordings "tolerable" and great recordings SPECTACULAR!
Yes! Please do something together!
Hi Sandu! Just giving credit where credit is due. 👍 We're hearing the same here - Gustard set the standard for this price and others will have to try to keep up.
About doing something together, I'm open to it if a good idea comes along. Cheers! 🍻
Now that's what I call a good review!👏🏻
You, Sandu and Tarun really are in the top tier. I especially like insisting on extensive and detailed comparisons with multiple other devices, cause without them, simply telling how good something sounds really doesn't make much sense for a potential buyer. Keep up the good....ups... excellent work! 👌
Hello! I want to thank you for the wonderful genuine and real presentation of the Gustard R26. In another review about A26 and R26 you said choose wisely and I chose R26. This dac really has a lot of soul, I've been listening to it for 100 hours now and I can't op
I expressed my joy in words at the sound of it. You were the reason I decided to buy this DAC, keep up the credible and detailed presentations you make. ? Thank you!
This was a hard decision as I thought I would love R26 over A26. I returned my A26 then bought it back. Many weeks of listening. Lots of trips to UPS store. I just liked the air in the sound stage of the A26. I should have kept both just because of my love for both.
Bravo. Real expertise in this review - the sound signature is super clearly described. This review has confirmed that everything I want in the sound is there - the combination of clarity, speed, tone, soundstage etc. I have an R26 on order (been stuck in customs for 2 weeks while they find the paperwork) and I am REALLY looking forward to it turning up now having seen your review. I even will be happy paying the tax on it! I reckon it will be great for electronica. Thanks for this review - much appreciated,
Well done review. Love how you articulate the sound you hear and the impression it had on you.
I really like how you review equipment. You have a great way of describing the key elements of sound. Keep up the great work
Nicely done as always Srbo! Good to see your channel is growing, thanks for you determination and passion for hi-fi world.
I just ordered this, thanks for all the great info!
Very enjoyable, detailed, precise discussion -- thanks
Thank you as always for your amazing review and insightful perspectives. A little out of my price range, but something to keep in mind. Your time and effort to share is always greatly appreciated.
Fantastic review! It's so obvious how sincere and honest you are 👍😁👍. Thank you! 😁😁
appreciate you sharing songs you listened to. One of the things I like about being a Hi-Fi Enthusiast is discovering new music.
Thanks for another excellent review. Unfortunately, negative comments are surfacing about Musician's lack of customer service and communication with customers.
Great 👍 review. I bought the R26 and love 💕 it. It's a great DAC
Hi Srboljub, just to thank you for your review and impressions, which in my opinion are very accurate and complete, concerning the way how music flows from R26. After living about 2 weeks with this DAC I can say that I’ve found a very nice balance for sound stage (huge and able to give information about instrument placement), detail (allowing to discover a lot of music nuances, never heard before, without being analytical and cold), transparency (extremely neutral, not emphasizing any range in the frequency response, sounding quite flat on the audible band and, like said, more on the dry side especially noticed on the middle band), pace (extremely dynamic from top end to low end, presenting very nicely decays of instruments) and silent (dead silent adding the sense of truly darkness when nothing is there to be reproduce). Overall, this is very musical DAC giving great sense of realism, presence and naturalness, excelling in bringing the emotion of music, especially live recorded music.
very nice presentation as usual ,pal . Keep up the good work .
I’ve had mine for 24 hours. Let it run overnight and am listening on HiFiMan HE-500’s through a Belari tube HP amp. Had a little time earlier through my trusty Musical Fidelity/Aerial Acoustics setup. So far, I think I’m in love.
Great and comprehensive review! 👍🏻
I agree about that brightness bias in the high : the first time I felt that was with the Focal titanium and ti-o2 tweeters, that is why I went back to cloth dome tweeters. That brightness or grain or harshness in the trebles can mimic as a ringing when listened at 85db volume. and it does not go away even with eq, it goes away either with lamp device or with source(different DAC or vinyl), or with cloth tweeter. And this is a separate topic from sound that is too analytical or too sharp or not. Early class-D amps had that problem too (along with the lack of body or fullness in the mid bass and medium). It sound a little like real time usb errors but much much smaller than dust on vinyl cracks.
Impressive review. I now have a clear idea of this Dac's qualities and characteristics. You have an excellent
skill-set when it comes to reviewing audio equipment... probably one of the top 3 on the planet. It shows, once again,
in this review. Now, having said that...
I am doing a complete rebuild of my audio system and without mentioning suppliers, most of what I have done so far
and will do in the future, is on the warm side (amplification/speakers etc). Now, when you mentioned that this Dac is
capable of processing Roon...(not just Roon ready) I got real interested. I 've decided that I have to experience Roon...
enough said. However, once you started to describe this Dac further I began to sense that it might just be the perfect
partner in my final system.
Much gratitude for this review and may I say, I love the clear enunciation and your choice of phrase/word structure you
use in describing audio equipment. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!👌
Thanks for the praise but please double check everything about roon support since I am not a roon user and haven't tested anything on that front.
It is not capable of running Roon core. It's endpoint only, like Roon ready (but not certified!)
HI Srboljub I bought the DAC a few months ago and love it. Easily beats my A22. I tried the streamer to my ears more 2D than going through my IFi Zen Stream
Just received my R26. I will be running it 24/7 over the next couple of weeks. Can't wait for it to hit the sweet spot!!
Thank you for the review, my friend, A good DAC with streaming capability that can be used as a Roon end-point, sounds very good 👍.
This DAC probably will be a final step for my organic most natural sounding set up. I'm planning to set it up together with my Verite Closed and Feliks Audio Elise amp 😍😍
Great review and comparison. Yes, it will be great if Denafrips can be compared. Thanks for sharing. 👏👍.
You could always run the streamer through a tube pre to warm up the sound. Great review as always Srboljub!
New affordable DAC on the market is HoloAudio Cyan 2. That one is even cheaper than Gustard, but may sound even better because it is totally bare bone DAC only.
I got the depth of the sound image, and the complete separation sound from the speakers only with the installation of the acoustic ceiling panel.
Good review. I currently own the SMSL SU-10 which is paired with a Topping A90D. I use this setup for both headphone listening with a Sennheiser HD800s (Love it), and with the A90D in preamp mode connected to a Classe Ca-100 to drive a pair of Klipschorns (also excellent). Based on your review of the Gustard R26 which I've watched multiple times, have now finally decided to order one this morning, I should receive it soon.
SU-10 is fantastic device too. Both of those DACs are still with me as references below one thousand and two thousand respectively that competition is yet to beat. Going strong year and a half after I reviewed them.
Hello Nice review One Upgrade to point out ,besides using a good aftermarket power cord
Myself and others put in a 20 mm -2.5amp slow blow fuse Synergistic research purple fuse
When installing have writing on the fuse going Left to Right facing Up. Give it a minimum of
100 hours to get 95%. Of runin. This truly adds these meat of the bass in the bass as well as greater depth and imaging , this now is better then the Denafrips pontus2 dac , I have this
In over sampling Medium that gives the best balance 10 out of 10 in our Audio club agreed
With my modded Dynaudio 3.5SE speakers.
2,5 ampere? Should it be 3,15? Shenzen says on their site so.
I received this 3 days after this video went up. The delivery came late at night around 10:30 so I unbox it, hook it up to test that it’s working because otherwise I have to report fast. I was supposed to test that it’s working only but the Atrium went on and kickstarted 4 hours of listening. And just to make sure it’s not just this head[home that sounds better, I take out all my headphones one after another. Right out of the box, the R26 already sounded brilliantly and it makes everyone of my headphones sound brilliantly and crazily-better!
I’m waiting for mine now ! Do you think it will pair well with a gsx mini and he1000v2 😬?
@@theodorezurla496, I do not have experience with gsx mini or he1000v2 but I am sure you’ll hear a difference. It’s whether you will like it and find it value for money. I listened with Sennheiser 6XX, HD820S. ZMF Atrium, HiFiman Arya stealth, Clear MG and etc etc… all my headphones sound better
Great review as usual. Love your style. Question: Were you using a DDC when testing these DACs? Would like some brief details of what your setup looks like starting these reviews.
Just when I was planning a Schumann! The streamer is a plus for sure.
Thanks!
Thank you too!
Hi Srbolijub! Your reviews have been a breath of fresh air among the cacophony of UA-cam audio reviewers. Please pardon my ignorance as I have had my system for about 30 years and still listen to vinyl and cd’s. Since I am looking to update to the 21st century, I would like to know how to use the Gustard R26 as a dac and a streamer. I have a separate power amp and preamp and am wondering how and if I can indeed hook these up to my current setup.
Thanx in advance
Fred
Since you mention the Pegasus DAC, when I had one here I found the analog xlr connections were pin three high. In many systems this would lead to a polarity inversion. Could be an important difference to critical listeners.
GREAT REVIEW MAN YOU ARE BEST AS ALWAYS THANK YOU
This is why I like your reviews - I have enough overlapping experience with the Ares II, that I can understand the "essence" of these newer DACs.
And that is why I *wish* you could hear my current reference DAC - the Geshelli Labs J2 AKM, with a 50W 12V third party linear power supply. It has (to my ears in my system) *all* the qualities that you speak about with this R26 DAC. Which seems impossible, since the J2 is a $300 delta sigma DAC. All I know is, it is far better than the Ares II and much better than the Bifrost 2 & 2/64, as well.
Jealous that for $300 you have your end game DAC! My wife and accountant sure would be jealous too if they knew lol!
Ok, I subscribe to that, I like the way you review and I can imagine what would happen after you get your hands on more gear for testing, reviewing, hearing 👍
I just sold some of my wife's shoes and purses on ebay to buy a new DAC and then you tell me I should stop watching these reviews. I think you're right. My wife is now threatening to leave me.
Yeah, it's the everlasting battle of DACs vs Shoes and purses. 🤣
I can understand why your wife took your selling her stuff to buy a new DAC rather PURSEonally! Wouldn't be at all surprised if she ends up SHOEing you out the back door for doing that. Too bad if you end up feeling a little bit like a HEEL
Gustard R26: seriously a giant killer. I’m currently comparing it with with PS Audio DirectStream dac that used to cost $7k and I find stark differences. PSA DSD is pretty resolving but not as resolving as R26 and R26 has sweeter midrange while DSD plays way too safe in the midrange. Both have similar bass tone and texture. For me (kef r3 and Yamaha as1200) tonally DSD is no match for R26 and DSD is usually compared to Denafrips Terminator! On top of it, R26 keeps getting better with break-in. I only wish it looked better. Thank you for introducing this amazing DAC!
Believe the hype, really!!!
Like many, I have had hit and miss results going on reviews but this piece of kit is an absolute bargain no question. Mine just arrived the other day and even on startup it sounded great, but like many have said, it needs about 100 hours running in, although mine is literally improving by the hour shortly after getting it up and running. Even at this stage it is astonishing, finding a way to present incredible musical detail but in a very balanced and natural way. Again, as others have said, it has an incredible sense of "air" and dimensionality with fantastic soundstaging. I came from a great little budget dac, the Geshelli J2, but wanted to try an R to R dac, although I didn't necessarily want to spend the very big bucks for the Holo models or higher Denafrips. Whilst I haven't heard those dacs in person, I can't honestly imagine they will be that much better, if at all, than this Gustard, which is end stage for me in all honesty.
And a couple of tips.
Assuming you are going in via PCM, I found the sound to improve noticeably if you set the PCM NOS to ON. This bypasses the internal FIR filters sending the signal direct to the ladder array (to my mind, a bit like a tone defeat on an amp). This will disable your variable volume control and also the PCM Filters, but overall I was happy to sacrifice those for the better sound. Btw, the PCM Filer control is useful though if you want to tweak the sound character of the dac, and no doubt users will experiment with the filters and the direct NOS signal to see which they prefer.
I imagine setting DSD Direct to ON will have similar results if you use DSD material.
Also, I have never really bothered with Bluetooth, but even this functionality is amazing in that the receiver is incredibly stable and the sound is astonishing bearing in mind the limitations of the format. I have yet to try the USB or Ethernet inputs, but no doubt they will be stunning too. And apparently in the coming month or so there will be a firmware update to include Tidal Connect, happy days.
I run the unit with a great little Primare DD15 CD transport, but am looking at other options to further improve things as the transport definitely makes a difference if you are using CD. And if it helps, in testing transports I was seriously underwhelmed by the Audiolab, the current mid price favorite. The same goes for the Leek and even the more expensive Cyrus transports. As I say, I may explore more exotic transports but the Primare is great for the money.
Finally, Gustard Support are incredibly responsive and helpful, I have raised a number of queries with them via email and they have been great.
Anyway, I hope this helps if you are considering this piece of kit, just buy it, you will thank me!
Oh, I was considering this dac paired with a Cyrus CD transport. What about Luxman CD player. I need an endgame cd transport… which one do you consider if those you mentioned are not top for you?
@@stephenbates5237 I am no expert on transports but I love my Primare DD15 and of course there is the upper model in the range, the DD35. I have heard a lot of good things about CEC belt drive transports, and of course there are various other exotic brands going up to silly money, but you will have to decide what you mean by endgame. The best advice I can give though, is do not go on reviews or reputation alone, you must try them in real-time to find what works for you.
@@fusionfan6883 well thanks for letting me know your opinion. I think the DD 35 model is worth investigating, as you like the 15. My ears are 52 yo and I own a lot of cds.. but ultimately love the music first. Pair of Martin Logan 11a is my stereo 2 channel preference front end, also need a power/ pre amp to make the digital source sing. Exciting times ahead.. thanks for your insight FF.
@@stephenbates5237 Ha Ha I wish i was 52 again - 62 here 🙂 I love both vinyl and CD and have been on a mission to upgrade recently. To be honest, if you can find a valve amp that will power your MLs, then that might be the way to go if you want "singing" stereo? I have been on a quest to replace my unusual amplification - upgraded Tom Evans EC Audio Finestra preamp, Tom Evans Microgroove phono stage and Technics SE-A2000 power amp - but having tried a number of products I remain underwhelmed by what I call the "modern sound" of Hi Fi. Good luck with your search!
for music only/ dap id avoid umm
i would like to see you review a rme adi-2 dac fs . the reason is because you hear what i hear, your verbiage and descriptions are as i would
describe or paint the picture of what we hear and feel.
i like your reviews.

I love your ability to describe the sound, very rare. I am subscribed and you are bookmarked high up on my list of reviewers. Thank you! As a matter of interest, how did the pre-amp section sound in relation to your Acoustic Invader pre?
not advisable/ worth the money, dap+it is more simple, easy to carry, high quality listening anywhere
I bought my R26 about 2 months ago based on word of mouth in my forums and Soundnews' glowing review. On arrival, I was not particularly impressed pitting it against my Topping D90LE. Disappointed in fact. But looking at a Soundnews comments and forums, the general consensus was a bare minimum of 100 hours burn in, ideally 3-4x that. So, I let the DAC run 24/7 for over a week, checking in from time to time. After about 300+ hours, it was a totally different beast. While I'm still playing around with it, you _totally nailed_ the R26's characteristics. The best qualities of Delta-Sigma DACs, but creamy smooth with a soundstage that is wide, high and deep. I had demoed a Denafrips Venus II at my home from a store some time back, and while I liked it, didn't think it beat my Topping enough to spring that kind of dough. This on the other hand is a game changer. Currently I haven't tried its streaming capabilities, and am using my Aurender N100H until I am 100% familiar with it. The R26 is running balanced to my BAT preamp and amp to Focal Kanta No2's. Anybody looking for DACs between $1500-4000 should put on their short list.
🤗👍HOPE ALL IS WELL
SRBOLJUB 💚💚💚
I have a Pontus II…YES …apparently burn-in time is important with R2R DACs! Tarun at British Audiophile recently reviewed Venus II and compared out-of-box to 200hr of use (not continuous listening….He thought it did not sound better than Pontus II out-of-box…so he put it in his son's room for burn-in and then took another listen), and according to him it was a night and day improvement!
@@bobb.9917 🤗👍😎
There is an old saying, “ the proof is in the pudding” 😊
I am already in love with this dac without burn in on the first listen. Within 48 hours, I've put my Ares 2 on sale.
@@6DarkKnight9 could you please explain what differences did you hear on the r26 compared to ares 2? I’m looking to do that exact upgrade! thanks so much!
Excellent
Thank you for your honest review. Your conclusions, I fully confirm.
This comment is for those who think it's worth buying or not... I'll tell you - Worth it!!!! worth every cent. Worth it even if it cost twice as much. The Gustard R 26 opened up the world of music for me anew. It is impossible to describe in words - there is no limit to enthusiastic emotions when you feel that the music in which you know every note and words by heart sounds so different, especially in a deep and rich way, that it seems like you are hearing it for the first time. Bravo Gustard.
well for 2x id rather get jh, but yeah it presents music in such quality you wont get in any midrange setup
good thing abt it is it doesnt need high audio 'experience' or 'knowledge' to hear the greatness, its straightforward better at presenting music
its that 'downtown' quality i was tlking abt, like passing by some good speakers at a mall, tm7 also share this quality
@@iikatinggangsengii2471I own and have owned a sufficient number of expensive devices, I have enough experience to draw my own conclusions and not impose it on others. Unlike you... I am sure that to write a nickname like yours you do not need a twofold increase IQ. As for the R 26, it remains in my headphone listening chain to this day. Despite the fact that it is the cheapest link in the chain, I do not intend to change it; it does its job well. And lastly, I don’t go to shopping centers to look at expensive acoustics; they bring them to my home and I listen to them with high quality and in comfort .
Great Review! Thank you!
Have you plugged the Gustard R26 to your Austic Invader power Amp? Is the build in class A preamp in Gustard good value?
Nice review. I wish I had the cash for such a DAC
Great video. Thank you for posting it up. I was wondering will the R26 pair well with a Burson Soloist 3X performance amp and a Schiit Lokius? Thanks in advance.
Thank you for your review. It was very helpful. I had the opportunity to audition the r26, and it was a significant improvement for me. The musicality is excellent, with a rich and continuous sound, a spacious soundstage, and it is more enjoyable to listen to. I have a question and would like to seek your advice. Currently, I have my DAC connected directly to the power amplifier, and the volume is controlled by the DAC. Now, I want to add a preamplifier after the DAC to have better analog volume control and improve the overall sound quality, soundstage, and dynamics. Would you recommend any particular preamplifier or have any other suggestions? thanks
Wonderful review, as always! You have been inspiring my journey from the get go and I so appreciate your balanced approach. Did you happen to see if the Gustard R26 I2s pinout works with the Mercury streamer? Was thinking eventually upgrading to the Gustard at some point...especially with the hopes of being able to use I2s on my Mercury. 🙏
I am unsure if it is compatible with the Mercury, but it has an internal streamer so it doesn't matter. It's an AMAZING DAC!!!
I find this dac and the GD-Audio R8 MK2 are the most interresting Dacs under 2000€
I can't decide which one to buy.
Srboljub - you telling me to be happy with my Musician Pegasus and not run out and buy a Gustard R26 makes me want to go out and buy a Gustard R26.... Great review - I had faith you'd like it since Sandu liked it :). Solid.
well yes i see no point to buy it if one already have ciem
better buy good speakers
Even for you this is an exceptionally good review. I love the Gustard sound of there lesser DACs. I would suggest that you listen to Beethoven 7th symphony movement 3. And comment on your experience of texture. I have not heard this dac but I have heard other Gustard. Short of live music they provide the most texture I have come across.
By any chance, have you ever heard a Benchmark DAC3? If so, how does it compares to the Gustard R26. I want to make the jump from delta sigma into R2R and currently own the Benchmark DAC3.
Sorry but I haven't heard it so can't help here.
@@iiWiReviews Got it, I appreciate the response nevertheless. Thank you 🙏
Hi Srboljub, I have this DAC to replace a Cambridge DAC I had in my bedroom system. I also have a Lumin T3 installed as a streaming DAC in my main system in my lounge room. Do you think the Gustard R26 would be an improvement in my main system over the Lumin T3?
Would the Rega Brio be of sufficient quality to bring out the most of what the R26 offers or does it really need a much better amp to experience its attributes over say a Topping L90?
Given that single ended outs/ins can only be used? While I do have an amp with XLR, considering replacing it due to size/weight considerations. I only listen at low to moderate sound levels and really like stage depth vs a flatter stage. I get some of that now and have heard speakers, dacs, amps which are very 2D which is not appealing.
I have heard the Brio in a shop but am considering other small options as well. Issue is, they only use single ended unless you spend a sizeable amount or unless you consider class D options.
SO R26 on a roughly $1K integrated...still worth it or would it hold the dac back too much? I know speakers matter too but those are easy enough to upgrade/try.
Would love to try this in my home system but I have a RME ADI-2 and it also acts as a preamp with tube mono blocks. Would be fun to try that DLNA with Audirvana 2.1.
Hi, i really like your review of this DAC. i would like to know if you can play directly from a stick via USB input? Thanks.
Odličan content, koji dac/amp bi preporučio početniku uz HD600 slušalice?
I bought the R26 and it's been going for over 200hrs. In comparison to my NAD M-51 it's basically identical, which says alot for the R26. I give imaging (center) edge to the NAD.
Do you experience any hum noises(from display or transformer) with your unit? Thanks
@@justasimplefox No. The R26 takes over 200hrs and that's with a signal going through it before it finally reaches its peak performance. I get noises from my tube amp, switching inputs and I think maybe I've experienced little pops from the R26 during the switching of inputs but nothing significant
Firstly I want to complement you on the very high quality content of your reviews...you have an art of combining the subjective and objective in a very digestible fashion. AND I can confirm that what you heard with the R26 EXACTLY match my opinions. See below!
I recently installed an R26 based on many reviews...although this one was a pretty hard hitter.
My previous DAC was at some point highly lauded, but in my system always sounded sluggish, 2-dimensional and uninspiring. To a point I had not SERIOUSLY listened to music for years. Sure I streamed Calm Radio in the background, but with eight 6550 tubes in my power amps, this was not a particuarly cost effective way of doing things, seeing that replacement 6550s are now about $100 EACH.
The R26 was installed last week, and although the initial impressions were favorable it seemed a little constricted. But after a week of solid running in, I relistened to it seriously over the last two days, and compared it with my reference CD player (I wont mention any names here).
After a weeks run in-it is an entirely different beast. This is by FAR the best sound I have gotten in the last ten years. Massive sound stage, deeeeeep and agile bass, tactile holographic midrange and a sound stage you could almost walk around. I am now pulling out CDs and listening to them in entirity...something I have not done for over a decade. This is the REAL test if a component, or a system can connect emotionally.
Like yourself, I noted that the top end sometimes lack that sparkle that initially can draw you in to the rhythms-unless that sparkle is actuall on the recording-in which case it is there in abundance. This DAC does not cast an artificial spotlight on the content, which on the long term could only result in listener fatigue.
My speakers are flat to 25Hz-something I have confirmed with test tones, and the previous sources I have used revealed unpleasant loss of control. at the lower end-which greatly robs from the musical enjoyment.
The only comparison I could make was vs. my reference CD player....a unit that sold originally for $12,000 some 18 years ago, to which I have effected enormous upgrades to component quality and the power supplies, for another $8k. So...I have about $20k into it. The Gustard-even with Wifi streaming through the Node130 sounded much cleaner, separated and controlled. And moving up to the Audiolab 6000CDT into the R26 via coax, this CD player was knocked back even further. Bear in mind that the CD-Transport and R26 are in the $2k region...about 10% of what I ended up spending on the CD player.
Until now, my CD player has easily bettered quite a few high end digital sources, and I fully expected it to edge out the R26 as well. But it didn't.
Adding an after market fuse (I used a HiFi Tuning one) to the R26 incrementally improved its output, with even more articultion and a slightly greater degree of bass control.
I am SO impressed with the R26, I have ordered an entry level external clock to try out...an LHY OKC-1. If this is considered an improvement, I may well trade up to the OKC-2. The Gustard C18 is quite expensive.
Anybody looking to move to an external word clock should note that it needs a 50 Ohm output and a 50 Ohm coax cable, instead of the more commonly used 75 Ohm ones. I ordered a LMR400 coax, although RG8x or the like should also be fine. The Gustard BNC cable is close to $200, which is more than 3x the cost of the coax I ordered.
if i have a all-in-one amp/dac and want to keep using it, should i upgrade to an amp or dac first to pair with it?
Great review Srboljub! I am curious if you know somebody who has Soekris DAM dac - one of the best r-2r DYI proposals, very popular, and how it compares....
Great reviewing! Can you suggest a link or provide information on how to update the firmware?
R2R DAC's are very interesting.
After I have it for some time, I can say that this review is the perfect definition of the sound you can find on the internet.
Many times I feel the r26 a bit boring, but with good recordings it's very good.
The upnp is excellent for my ears although it has clicks when starting an finish songs.
But when I want to enjoy music, I prefer my very old receiver with dac.
This dac is very good but you have to use a good recorded song. (from my point of view).
May you name that very old receiver with dac?
@@meaninthemirror
I use Denon 8500 with external amplifier to have better sound on both front speakers.
When you configure it well, it's not worst than a the r26 with a streamer.
A26 is more lively. Demo’d both for 21 days plus. Roon Ethernet connection is wonderful.
@@jmp622
Maybe I will buy it in the future.
For now, I really enjoy r26
Hi thank you for this review. Do you think is worth to replace my SMSL 500 m to this DAC?
The best review ever! Thanks to you sir! I got exactly the info i needed from this review! Did you use the preamp in the R26 or separate preamp sir?And if you is there any difference? Thanks!
Like you, I don't know if Srboljub is using the R26's volume control or setting it to FIXED output and using an external preamp. I am using my Gustard R26 in its FIXED output (non-preamp) mode driving Holo Audio's top-of-the-line BLISS KTE (Kitsune Tuned Edition) Headphone Amp/Preamp combo, which is in turn connected to a MARCH AUDIO Class D amplifier driving a pair of PERLISTEN Model S5M three-way stand-mount loudspeakers. The combination of the above sounds VERY good, whether I'm using the R26 as a DAC connected via AES/EBU to my PRO-JECT CD Box RS2-T CD transport, or when I use it as a Roon Endpoint. The Gustard R26 punches way above its price point.
My conclusion: It's much better to use an external preamp with the R26, and let it feed the full line-level quality of its analog outputs to a decent preamp/amp/loudspeaker combo. You lose considerable detail at lower volume settings on the R26. It's a DAC first and foremost - its preamp feature is a handy CONVENIENCE to be used only when necessary.
@@joscallinet6260 Cheers! We will try the equipments we own until we get the best synergy!
Much enjoyed, Srboljub. I think this DAC is a little more than I'd be prepared to spend, but your description of its sound makes one salivate nonetheless. Just out of pure curiosity -- because I won't be getting one -- and maybe a because I'm a bit of a masochist, how do you think it might go with the basic Acoustic Invader preamp + XTZ Edge A2-300 class D power amp + Dali Menuet SE's? Half of me hopes they aren't up to the job, but the other half suspects they might be, LOL. Still, gotta draw the line somewhere... 🙂
I bought the R26 and this review is spot on. The funny thing is, it took owning the DAC for 2 weeks to really understand what the reviewer is talking about. A big surprise, I like "muddy, grainy" and I don't really like "delta-sigma like attributes". I think my old Ares II is not better, but more toe tappingly fun. "Tone Neatness" is the opposite of "Toe Tapper". There is such a thing as too much "pinpointing" that takes over the experience making me think that the component is a "one trick pony". I've only experienced this kinda "pinpointing" my old Audio Research VT-100 amp. I learned something new in this purchase. There are two kinds of reviewers. Those who like a "digital sound" and those that like "analog", As I make purchases based on collating multiple reviewers opinions for equipment I can't audition but still wanna hear, I should pay attention where a reviewer historically lies between those two sounds.
I guess if it's more fun you'd prefer it?
Every sound demo I have heard of the R26 screams digital to me. I'm an analog guy, I like that old school vinyl sound. Seriously looking at the Pontus II 12th vs the R26. I currently own the Ares II, and like the sound signature, just looking for more clarity and separation.
@@michaelwright1602 Trouble with sound demos of the R26 may be because the DAC hasn't been properly broken in.
@@221298ale yes, but not just the signature, how it presents details also more fun
Hi, will it be a decent upgrade from SMSL D300? Also i prefer D300 over delta-sigma DACs like D400ES.
Dear friend, I always follow your reviews.
I want to switch from my smsl m400 that I bought after your review, which I liked but I want to switch to the gustard.
I have a streamer with Ps audio i2s, so I can't use the gustard.
How did you test it?
Did you used i2s?
Thank you.
Ilan.
What really transform this DAC is adding an external clock. It gives more punch loses it slight warmth so sounds more accurate and improved texture. Personally I do not rate the internal streamer a bit 2D compared to my streamer.
What streamer are you using instead? Cheers
Very accurate review based on my own experience with this DAC. I was looking for an upgrade to my Terminator II and bought the R26 based on Sandu's review as a stopgap - lol it turned out to be the upgrade I was looking for, and I promptly sold the Terminator. My main system is as follows: Melco S100 ethernet switch using the fiber optic output->Lumin P1->Singxer SU-6 DDC->Gustard R26->Gryphon Diablo 300->B&W 804 D4. Cabling is a combination of higher-end Transparent and Audioquest cables. My system is highly resolving, even cable upgrades and isolation tweaks clearly register, and the R26 is what my system needed synergistically speaking. If you are in the market for a DAC and don't want to spend Holo May or Terminator Plus money, then buy this DAC if the R2R sound is what you like. FYI as an aside, my next experiment is an MSB Discrete DAC with dual power supply in a head-to-head with the R26. The MSB dealer in my town is a guy I buy most of my gear from, so he's down for loaning me the MSB for an extended in-home demo, super interested how well the R26 holds up when compared to the real high-end stuff.
Thanks for this informations, i had also for some time Terminator 2 but i didnt like it.(with Luxman l-590ax2, Innuos zenith mk3, Primare DD35 cd transport, all cables Acoustic Revive) i admire terminator only in big/wide/deep soundstage(he was great about it).but if i play rock, hard rock, EDM music he just dont sound wright.... I change for Holo spring3 KTE and i could live with this dac forever but im courious about Gustard r26. Im really corious also how will gonna be your feelings about MSB, cheers 👍
That's a great system! If you listen to Jay's Audio Lab demo's you will see that Luxman M10X surpasses even Gryphon Essence easily - stronger bass and much more air in the treble.
From what I heard via youtube, the "lower" end MSB Dacs are beaten by Holo May, only the top two MSB models pull away from it: MSB Reference and MSB Select2. There is also a demo comparison with MSC Discrete where I couldn't separate it from Gustard X26, with both being beaten by Holo May. As I understand it, Holo May was basically intended as a Chinese version of higher end MSB for the masses.
Also if you get a streamer with i2S output like Manu Ultra IIA, you can bypass the Singxer and eliminate all USB from your system.
@@connorduke4619 had the May on loan in my system just before I bought the Terminator, good DAC especially for soundstage dimension, didn't really impress me as far as dynamics and resolution, ended up buying the Terminator instead. Didn't have the space or money for separates so I went for an integrated, the Diablo 300 was my preference over the Luxman 509x and 590AXII by some ways, the Accuphase E-800 was a bit better in the midrange but fell short in bass definition and treble extension. Auditioned lots of amps using MSB stacks at my B&W dealer and was always blown away by them, yes even the Discrete was clearly better than any sub 10K DAC I've had the chance to hear. Don't believe the May hype train unless you've had a chance to demo it versus other similar gear in your own system. This Gustard R26 is the 1st truly high-value "unicorn" piece of gear I've come across since I started in this crazy hobby, very happy for those folks who are just starting out building their systems, for most people it could be an end-game DAC!
@@michaelmityok1001 Ok sounds like you've really done your homework there! Was also looking at the May KTE but happy to consider the R26 now instead and save same cash. For a unicorn preamp candidate the Denafrips Athena demo's very well on youtube, I personally think they make better preamps than Dacs.
@@connorduke4619 agree the Athena is also a fantastic value! Also I really think you can't go wrong with the R26, if you like R2R and your system could use more soundstage dimension and tonal clarity.
hello wii how you compare this Dac to the Hegel h90 Dac ??? I know you used to have that Amp
how did you connect it to your equipment? Did you try usb and I2S?
I wish it didnt look like a cable tv box lol
I have a Gustard R-26. and a Hi Fi Rose RS 130. I can't use them together with I2s because their pinouts differ. Is there a cable that connects them properly? If not, do I have to buy a D to D converter just to get the pinouts correct? That seems like a waste of money given that the RS 130 is supposed to have a good clock in it.
Dig the vid, Love my Tradutto, cool runnings
Thanks! 👍
How do you think the r26 will pair with my gsx mini and he1000v2?
Hopefully Denafrips can send you the Pontus II. Would like your take on comparing the two Dacs
Would love your take on the Arcam ST60.Hans Beekyhyzen gave it a good comparison to the Mytek Brooklyn Bridge Dac/Sreamer at halt the Mytek's $3K price
What are the setting you are using for the first 3 options in the menu?
You’re my new favourite reviewer, you’re right on the money with your impressions. I like how careful you are with the review and your comparisons are fantastic. Would you describe the ares 2 as warmer than the r26?
Thanks. Ares II is warmer in the midbass section but has some sort of brightness in the upper midrange so it's not easy to generalise for the whole sound. The biggest difference is that Ares II is much softer and diffused sounding with lesser resolution and dynamics.
@@iiWiReviews sounds about right, definitely softer, warmer presentation from the ares 2, with that tilted highs
I demoed in-home against the Venus II, and while I thought it was warmer/smoother than my Topping D90, thought it slurred in comparison. The R26 has all the speed and detail of the Delta-Sigma DACs, with a smooth, wide open 3D soundstage. I'm floored for the price, considering I was ready to plop down almost $5k. I ordered from Aoshida, and had my R26 in 5 days from Aoshida.
@@slidetek thanks for the input that incredible. Ladder Schumann or r26 will be my next dac. Might need a tad more warmth for my system
@@robk5745 If you want warmth you can also get that from amplification or speaker.
Thanks for this detailed review! For the reviewing or anyone who has tried this DAC: How does the R26 do with classical music and in accurately recreating natural/organic instruments? And is it ever sibilant with harsh treble peaks?
Hello, how will you compare R26 with PS Audio stellar gaincell dac?
Hi, I have one question. Is a DAC that is good for speakers also good for headphones? Or are there specialized DACs for headphones?
You need to make a Review of Holo Spring 3 DAC or Holo May if possible, just to understand where the R2R converters state of art can bring the listening enjoy
I noticed almost immediately that everyone praising this R26 DAC are who I would consider chip DAC aficionados. They like that digital sound, and listening to many sound demos of the R26, that is exactly what I hear. Is there anyone here, like myself, that gets headaches or ear fatigue from listening to a chip DAC, that bought this R26 unit?
There is a lot to like about the R26, and I am tempted to purchase one over the Pontus II 12th. But, my fear is that I will get that chip or digital sound vs that R2R analog, or Denafrips "House" sound, like I am getting out of my Ares II. I like that rich buttery analog vinyl sound I get from the Ares II, but we all know it lacks in quite a few areas, but still sounds very good.
Any folks out there like myself, with my hearing issue, that went with the R26?
could be, umm as many stated excels in smoothness
Hi Srboljub, one thing you didn’t cover back when you did this video but have started to do more recently is comment on the pre-amp and compare to your own device.
How would you rate it, particularly the analog section?
I’ve recently taken ownership of the R26 but always struggled to find good info on the pre-amp, beyond what Currawong spoke of in his review of the unit.
Thank you and keep up the excellent work!
Any comparisons with Gustard X26 Pro?
Any thoughts/opinions about comparison to Pontus ii
Sorry if this has already been covered but I’m not clear if the pre amp section of this unit is as good as the DAC section. Did you listen extensively to this unit through the built in volume control?
If so, how did it sound?
Thanks.
I have tried it just briefly and it works fine. I don't test that part extensively or cover it in any review because in my experience it never matches a true dedicated preamp. Using DACs internal attenuation usually sounds analytical, soundstage collapses, and dynamics are OK but not great. If I ever hear, or notice in the data sheet that a DAC comes with a true preamp section (in analog domain, not just lossy digital attenuation they're mostly using right now), then I will pay more attention to it. Until then, there's a good rule of thumb - the more voltage a DAC outputs on its line level out, the better it will be as a preamp.
The two power supplies are not used for separating left and right audio. One is for the digital side, and the other is for the analog side. I guess you just assumed?
It seems my brain came to a full stop there. I actually checked the whole feature list many times. Even more I am currently making my own DIY DAC with separate power supplies for digital and analog parts... So yeah, no excuses for this mistake. 😅
Anyway, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'll add a correction.
@@iiWiReviews no worries….mistakes happen. Just wondering if you had a different source for the info.
@@iiWiReviews was the review based on single ended or balance output?
Your take on it’s single ended output compared to DS DACs?
How good is preamp control ?
I've used both single-ended and balanced. Both are great and SE is as good as it gets... but balance is always a touch cleaner if your preamp is truly balanced too.
I LOVE the modern functional display on this Gustard compared to my Pontus II! …(oh…it comes in silver, too! 👍🏼) …and the fact that it also has I2S input! Does it have a remote?
Pontus II and Gustard are same price…would love to hear you compare them. I love my Pontus II and have no plans to change…but you are giving me a tiny bit of FOMO! 😀 (Amazon sells it…so I could try it in my system for free 🤯).
Yes it has a remote, small and very functional. I just made it worse, didn't I. 🙂
@@iiWiReviews STOP THE FOMO!!! 😂
You mention you like Oversampling mode but which filter do you prefer? fast, medium or slow? Thank you for the excellent review!
In my system and to my ears, medium is very good.
Hi, love your reviews, you have such a great way of describing the qualities of equipment. Just wondering about something that you never seem to mention, do you leave the equipment you review have a burn-in period or do you just take a new bit of equipment and test it? I know there are many opinions on this just wondering what your take on it was?
I always do a burn in. Sometimes it makes no difference, sometimes it does quite a bit... So I'm not taking any chances. R26 for example starts with a bit leaner and more sharp sound... But mellows down very nicely after some time (that's longer than usual).
@@iiWiReviews Totally agree, depends on the equipment, but better to than not to, at least that way it gets a fair assessment. Thanks for the reply 👍
have you test Gustard X26 PRO? What about x26 pro?
