I grew up a few miles from Moorestown Mall, went there for 56 years, it was always a great place to go, especially around the Christmas holidays! So many good times and memories, it is really sad to see it so empty and only a few people walking around, it used to always be crowded! I hope it comes back and goes strong once again, Moorestown and the surrounding area is a wonderful place, I will always think fondly of it!
Grew up in South Jersey. I remember when I was a kid in the 70s, my mom, my aunts and my sister and I used to get dressed up in our Sunday best to go to the Moorestown and Cherry Hill malls on Black Friday. We used to eat at the restaurant in the Strawbridge and Clothiers. It was quite an adventure with all the crowds and Christmas decorations. Sad to see the state it’s in now.
I lived in Moorestown as a teenager. My first job was at the McDonalds in the food court. I think the empty anchor store was a Strawbridge&Clothier. I worked at so many stores in both the Moorestown and Cherry Hill malls.
I remember when these malls were first built. My Dad lamented the building of the Cherry Hill mall. They built the Cherry Hill Mall on a potato farm that my Dad used to hunt pheasants on. Same with the Chevy dealership across the street from CH Mall. I remember going to the farm one last time with Dad before construction began. Everybody said that the malls will cause the collapse of the downtown areas of the cities. Camden and Philly downtown areas were hit hard by the malls. Kotlikoff's Department store in Camden closed soon after the malls. I used to hang out in the Cherry Hill mall as a teenager. It was always busy and bustling. Strawbridge and Clothier, Bambergers, and a major grocery store were anchors. The "Tavern on the Mall" had the best roast beef sandwiches. My first job was a busboy at the "Fruit Tree Restaurant" in the Cherry Hill Mall. Loved it! The indoor plants, fountains and parrots gave the place a magical feel. So now it's time for a new saga for the malls. Internet shopping and online stores have killed the brick and mortar retailers. Sad to see it, but times have changed. I left the South Jersey/Philadelphia area in 1981. The only thing I miss is the food and delicatessens. I used to buy clothes from Robert Hall's across the street from CH Mall.
LOL, I think I'm just a few years younger than you. When I lived in lower Bucks County the Cherry Hill Mall was a destination. I grew up with the Bucks County Mall, Neshaminy Mall, and Oxford Valley Mall. I still remember the kiddie rides at the Cherry Hill Mall. Now live in Myrtle Beach since 2021. But I'm back there every year.
I use to live right across the street from cherry hill mall. Barlow area. a few blocks behind Chapel Ave. Church Road, Haddonfield Road. Always walked there when I was young.
Boost is made in Riverside,NJ. It’s a Burlington County thing. It was invented in Riverside by a doctor. It was originally called Drink a Toast. Boost is still made today. That’s the first time I saw it in the mall. Usually it’s sold in the towns along the river.
In 1992, a major fire destroyed the small stores between Sears and Boscov's. The three anchors opened the next day, but the rest of the mall, including all the small stores and the food court were closed from December through March. There was bad water and smoke damage throughout the mall, except the anchors. The interior hallways were totally redone. The fire started at Herman's Sporting Goods. AC Moore arts and Crafts had only one store at the time, which was destroyed, but they opened a new store to replace it at Eastgate right outside the mall. They then went on a major expansion opening throughout the area. The mall originally had 3 anchors, but they added a fourth store, a Lord and Taylor. One of the anchors was replaced with 3 smaller stores that had outside entrances. Ironically, Michael's did the opposite of AC Moore and moved from Eastgate to the mall (outside entrance).
birch beer is made from birch sap and bark giving it a lighter minty flavor while root beer is typically made with sassafras and has a more complex spicy taste
As noted birch beer is made with from the sap of the birch tree and that the flavor profile that you will taste. Root beers are exactly what it says a soda made from the root flavor of several types of tree sap. That is why different root beers have different flavor profiles. The other single flavor root beer type soda is what we heard about in old time westerns, sasperela which again is made from only one type of tree sap. I generally just stick to general root beer but have enjoyed sasperela type of root beer as well. Birch beer is a little too rich for my taste and have never had one I liked.
Hello Captain. The mall used to have a pond with ducks in it 70’s. Boost ( Tak-a-Boost ) also comes in a syrup form sold in half gallon bottles. It’s made in Riverside. Boost is a staple for families in the Burlington,Riverside area. The factory is going to have an open house on 12/6. I don’t work for them,I just happen to know this shit!
Not a Mall per say, but close to one. Berlin Mart in Berlin, NJ would make great content. A bonkers jumble of shops inside. Rise and Grind coffee truck has tasty coffee.
I remember when the center of the walkways were full of ducks with a mini stream running from one end to the other. Back before Herman’s burnt the joint up.
I grew up in Maple Shade and we used to go to the Moorestown Mall and the Cherry Hill Mall all the time. Where Cooper is now was the Sears store. If I remember right the skate park was next to the food court. They used to have Arby’s and McDonald’s in the food court. There used to be a Burger King where Woolworths used to be.
@ It’s Burlington County. I’d have gone to a different school (Bishop Eustace Prep opposed to Nazareth Academy). Certain parts of Camden County are ok. I’ve been stuck in Philadelphia for the past 46 years. My dad died very suddenly at Christmas 1991.
When I was a kid it was just this and Cherry Hill, was a big deal to go there, last time I was there was May and I was there to get cortisone shots in my shoulder. The movie theater was immense back in the day, saw Empire Strikes Back on the first day! There was a Gimbels I believe where the boscov is, there was indeed a Sears, it was a major deal when they built it, I think they closed the one on Admiral Wilson Boulevard when it opened. I worked at the Best Buy out back for a few years
Putting health and fitness and medical services are smart additions to malls. Those type of business help increase foot traffic through the mall. If they can then get the right mix of clothing and general merchandise stores they should do well. However the prices they charge have to be right and inventory good or people will still prefer to shop on line especially for non clothing items.
That may help. But millennials don't care about malls. Gen-Zs don't either. Gen-Zs are the first generation who've had the internet their entire lives. I just don't see how most of these places will be around in a decade. It is sad in a way. But retail is hard. Always has been.
@ You may be right. I worked retail in college and my first full time job was working for Hoover Company the famous vacuum cleaner company selling our products wholesale to both big and smaller stores. Even back in the 1970’s it was very competitive. One of my bosses said if you were successful in retail in Philadelphia you could be successful anywhere. Obviously that was before the internet but the big box discount stores were making things hard for both the traditional department stores as well as the neighborhood appliance companies. Many failed but we still have a few local neighborhood appliance stores so maybe malls if designed right can still make it but not as they have operated in the past.
Yo cuz. If you were in Moorestown you should have gone to Lilos in Hainesport. Best cheesesteak and pizza. Next time - go - I promise you won’t be disappointed
What happened to the Moorestown Mall? It's doing better than it has been for the last 6 years, that's what happened. Moorestown Mall is 70%-80% occupied, a number most malls can only wish for. 80% is what we call thriving in the mall scene. For reference, Oxford Valley Mall is only 65% occupied.
There are 3 types of birch beer. The most common is the red or Philadelphia style. The next one is the dark style of the New England region. The final type is the clear style of Amish country. There’s a company called Old Reading and they produce all 3 kinds. Boylans bottles the red and the dark. Both makes are really good.
KofP is the biggest mall in PA and also one if yhe biggest in the country. Cherry Hill seems to be doing better than it probably should be. Maybe more people know its historic nature.
I love the rant on movies. Hollywood is dead dead dead. I can’t remember the last time I wanted to do to the movies. There’s nothing to watch! Nothing!
If you want to check out a cool Mall there is a mall in Camp Hill Pennsylvania called the Capital City Mall it is always packed full of people it's located in Cumberland County Pennsylvania
Mike watched this later, and told me that I’ve been to this mall before…. with him. I wrote in the live chat I’ve never been here. Evidently I have. I don’t remember, but I’ll take my husband’s word for it. Lol
I moved to Cherry Hill in ‘63 and my aunt who was 18 had a job at Wanamaker’s in the Moorestown mall. Wow! It looks terrible now. The apartment idea isn’t a good one. I moved to Foster Square next to the Echelon mall and they had the same idea. It NEVER happened. It’s a ghost town now 😢

There used to be a huge Skating Park right in that area where you bought your Pizza about 15 years ago!!

I grew up in Camden County. This mall was always the "snooty mall". Lol I thought it would've died years ago. Thanks Cuz!
Hey Philly Captain, great video revisiting the Moorestown Mall-NJ..Enjoy the day & weekend.
Hello Captain. The mall used to have a pond with ducks in it 70’s. Boost ( Tak-a-Boost ) also comes in a syrup form sold in half gallon bottles. It’s made in Riverside. Good morning Cap!
Awesome. Thanks for the video.
Not a Mall per say, but close to one. Berlin Mart in Berlin, NJ would make great content. A bonkers jumble of shops inside. Rise and Grind coffee truck has tasty coffee.
We mainly go for Yard House these days.
I remember when the center of the walkways were full of ducks with a mini stream running from one end to the other. Back before Herman’s burnt the joint up.
Used to hit the mall and then visit the Entenman’s Budget Bakery in Mt. Laurel.

Want it aRoyRogers? I don’t remember a Burger King there.
I loved this mall when I was 10-13. We were planning on leaving Philly and moving to Moorestown. But my dad died and I’ve been stuck here since.
What's attractive about Camden County?
@ It’s Burlington County. I’d have gone to a different school (Bishop Eustace Prep opposed to Nazareth Academy). Certain parts of Camden County are ok. I’ve been stuck in Philadelphia for the past 46 years. My dad died very suddenly at Christmas 1991.

Hey Captain the Titanic has hit the iceberg time to rearrange the deck chairs!
This Mall is on its way up. Last year I built the Cooper medical facility right there with Hatzel&Buehler. It was previous the Sears Anchor store.

Always prefer the Moorestown Mall over Cherry Hill. Cherry Hill is crowed with that ghetto feel.

The top ten movies in 2024 were all sequels. Terrible
Wicked isn't a sequel. But yes it came from the Broadway show that opened 20 or so years ago.
