Why is Your Parcel Delayed - and How to Avoid It

International postal regulations require that every item passing an international border is subject to border inspection in the destination country.
Postal items coming into New Zealand are inspected by the New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) or the Ministry for Primary Industries for a number of reasons. These include but are not limited to inspecting the item to identify:
- Customs Charges, Duty, and Taxes
- Prohibited and restricted items
- Bio-security risks and risks to New Zealand’s environment
If you're importing goods into New Zealand, it's important that you're aware your goods may attract charges or be delayed by a border inspection.
If your item is stopped for a border inspection, it won't affect the target delivery period of 1-3 working days once your item has been released by Customs. If your item is 'held for clearance', your item may require further inspection by another Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) branch, or for you to pay Customs charges before it is released for delivery.
If your parcel is stopped by New Zealand Customs for the payment of duties or GST, New Zealand Post will send you a letter with the details of the payment required once it has been processed by Customs.
Postal items leaving New Zealand valued at over NZD$1000 must have an export entry issued by Customs. For more information about export entries, see the Customs website. If your parcel does not have an export entry, New Zealand Post will hold your item and contact you to arrange it.
To avoid delay, you should arrange the export entry before you post your item. You can either arrange this via your own customs broker (if you have one). There is an administration charge for this service.
It is also possible that your parcel may be delayed by the customs service in the destination country. If this happens, generally the postal organisation in the destination country will contact the person you have addressed the parcel to, and arrange for them to pay the duties and taxes. You will not necessarily be informed of the delay, although if you have used a tracked service, the tracking may indicate "Held for clearance."
If your item is detained by a customs authority in another country, please be aware that New Zealand Post is not able to 'speed up' the clearance process on your behalf.
As the sender of the parcel, you may be able to speak directly with the customs service in the destination country to expedite the process, or you can contact the postal organisation in the destination country.

Same here in th USA.... I was supposed to received a package next day 19 miles away from my location and it took 8 days to be delivered. Bad routing in my opinion, there's no need to transfer packages from hub to hub in a 19 miles distance., but whoever is in charge of the routing relays on electronic routing not using common sense.
When UPS delivery is in my area, I’ll watch it live on the map and they’ll be a block away from my house one moment, then the next they drive past my house and 5 blocks away to deliver to someone else just to drive all the way back and finally deliver my package.

Jackie Jackson I did get it. I rung them and they just wanted me to identify what one of the item was because it had a weird name on the invoice. If you’re also stuck on clearance event they’ll eventually contact you or you can ring them to sort it out sooner.

Check it out ! Its on there tracking page, place where just 3 days ago they told exactly its location and what is being done with it it now says optimum trackin available, press down arrow to open up the price menu. Tried online shopping, never got my parcels. Got in touch with NZ Post. After a week I get a message saying it was delivered else where. So I get it investigated to no satisfaction.
Well here is where it gets interesting. You see when it gets delivered its actually out of there hands and they don't do anymore about it as if we have to deal with it.
Well NZ post this is where we can do something about it. Where we can make you fail and someone more competent can do a better job.

When understand your frustration and especially when nobody told you about the extra costs. The cheapest way is for you to contact New Zealand post and they will offer the extra service to the customs clearance. If you want a faster but more expensive service you can use a customs broker for extra hundred dollars.

You will get an explanation in the letter by mail. You just have to wait couple of days or call directly to the post.

At least 2 times, DHL in their infinite wisdom, decided to open and unwrap Christmas care package presents from the USA...Instead of x-raying the wrapped correctly declared packages, the customs department took it upon themselves to open all 23 wrapped personal gifts year before last, and again last year just before Christmas....I presume using an x-ray machine is far too complicated for their customs employees, who are probably minimum wage zero contract temps. I have no issue with this, IF there was intel, or reasonable suspicion to warrant the in-depth examination, but there wasn't. I would urge anybody who are contemplating using DHL, not to, and to use other less draconian courier companies, or just use Parcel Force, as their shipping rates are more competitive, plus their customs department (on the whole) are not full of those who are lackadaisical in the brain department.
