Born in AZ, my mother travelled between Missouri and Arizona her whole life- they get a good amount of tornadoes. The number of stories my mom has of her and her brothers sitting out on their porch in Marana watching twisters glide over the desert is amazing.

a lot of them were likely dust devils

@@nileprimewastaken Some were. they would occasionally see a very small EF1 or so during thunderstorms. I also think my mom may have been mistaken some of the tornadoes for ones that she saw as a child in Missouri.

Yeah dust devils are relatively common down here but they aren’t considered tornadoes

I remember this outbreak. I live near Prescott, and we had some funnel clouds, and one or two touchdowns. I have a video of a tornado I shot in 2016 which lasted a whole 45 seconds from touchdown to rope-out. This one occurred over open land, thus no destruction. It was the last true tornado I've seen in AZ. Dust devils aren't tornadoes and don't count. (Jan Griffiths).

Grew up in Phoenix and remember the hailstorm well. The thing I remember most is how deafeningly LOUD it was. It sounded like every square inch of any surface was being smacked with sledgehammers many times a second.
The trees were falling apart as the hail crashed through the branches.

Phoenix born and raised, I was only 9 when this happened, remember getting ready for school and there were already 4-5 touchdowns in northern AZ already and I was so confused because even at that age I knew that tornadoes really don’t happen in the state. Freaky day indeed, I’m so glad someone has done a breakdown on this. Side note, only a little over half of AZ is Desert. The other half is pure forest. Flagstaff and Show Low get wicked cold.

im from AZ and i remember the winter in 2010 was also insane. i was living in flagstaff at the time and it snowed so much our neighbor had to come by with his bulldozer and dig us out of our house. it took forever for it all to melt. my brother and i built igloos and snow tunnels tho, best childhood memory ever.

Although I never knew about the little tornado outbreak up north, I can remember how violent the clouds and storm looked. I remember from being picked up by my father to not even a mile away from the school, I saw this elongated horizon vortices tube that was going fast. Maybe a mini-derecho. It’s weird because I saw the same exact cloud tube going around the northern Phoenix metropolitan area. What came with it was intense rain and wind. As a young teenager, this had me worried. But the moment it passed, it was the occasional drizzle of a thunderstorm. Still cool to remember though.

I wonder if this was the same year that I was driving from California to Arizona with my mom and I ended up having to drive through a haboob in the middle of the Sonoran Desert because there wasn't enough room on the side of the freeway to safely pull over. What I ended deciding to do was to drive behind a big rig in hopes that it would block some of the wind and sand and keep my mom's car from getting totally sandblasted. Of course this also meant that I had to get out of the fast lane and stop going 90, which was probably also a good idea, but it tells you how severe things were getting because I basically only slow down for dangerous conditions and for cops.

I remember that. I was at work in Scottsdale. Good thing I stayed in the building (car was parked in underground garage) until it was over. A few guys I worked with were leaving. Their cars got completely smashed from the hail. Monsoons are bad. More than once I haven't been able to make it home until hours later (I live out in the desert and have to drive through 15 washes just to get home).

What I find amusing is I very much remember the hail storm, because the hail damage is what got me my first car 😂 the price dropped significantly because of the dents and needing new mirrors and stuff. But I had NO idea about the tornados! Thats kinda wild! The only ones I know about are from like 2017/2019?? I think those are the years. Until recently I didn’t know nearly 300 tornadoes have occurred here between 1950 and now.

If you look it up it'll only tell you less than 300, I've tried to get an exact number but it won't give it to me, LOL but you can go on to maps and see all of the tornadoes that have hit Arizona.

The October 2010 hailstorm and tornado outbreak were caused by the breaching of a man-made inversion in the Millet Swale watershed, southeast of Snowflake, Arizona.
Between 2005 and 2008, a man and his wife built a house on an isolated hill that is located within a basin within the watershed.
The isolated hill probably wasn't substantial enough for any house, much less a two-story drystack house.
The couple soon discovered that they had a serious problem with erosion.
The hill was blowing away and washing away, and the house would be destroyed.
Probably after researching the issue, they decided that to protect the house they would need to keep the hill dry.
They tampered with the environment of the neighborhood, to change the environmental lapse rate and create an inversion.
An inversion inhibits convection and precipitation. By inhibiting convection, heat from the ground pushes up the inversion layer and causes high pressure.
The resulting high pressure ridge put excess pressure on connected watersheds, both upstream and downstream.
Millet Swale drains to Silver Creek, which drains to Little Colorado River, which connects to Colorado River and all of its tributaries.
This man-made, deliberately engineered inversion compromised the entire Colorado River Basin, resulting in drought.
The end of the first week of October 2010 was two weeks after the fall equinox.
As days grew shorter and the sun got lower, the inversion was weakened.
Perhaps the owner ofthe adjacent property cleaned up a mess that was made to create the inversion.
Perhaps wind or rain neutralized the mess.
When the inversion was breached, a tremendous amount of bottled up energy was released from the ground, where excess heat had been stored due to the inversion.
The sudden venting of heat caused the severe weather.

That picture of downtown Tucson was super cool, because it's a really unique skyline angle! The vast majority of Tucson skyline pics are taken from a one of two large hills on the southeast side of town. There have always been several great vantage points + drone photography is a common thing now, yet the A mtn/Tumamoc vantage point is still the banal site of choice.
It's also just cool that you included Tucson in general. It's a large city that is decently well known across the country, but it tends to get overshadowed by that one major US city 90 miles(?) northwest of here. What's that city called? Phonenacks? Hook-On Phonics (Worked for Me!)?? Lol Jk I know the name *and* how to spell it 😂
