I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for the effort you are making in sharing all these things with "us". I am at a very difficult time in my life, and crafting for my gaming has been a gift. Please keep up the good work! edited: spelling
I just started playing D&D with my friends for the first time ever a few weeks ago and nothing has gotten me more excited/into the game and future campaigns than these videos! I....Cant.....Stop.....Crafting
As a refinement to the non-slip base technique, you can squirt the hot glue onto the bottom of your workpiece then press it onto a sheet of non-stick baking paper on a flat surface to spread the glue. This also works great to stabilise a wobbly base that has warped
I need to be honest; in all seriousness. You are very, very impressive. The progressive sustainability and how-tos. The way you bring a terrain and dungeon to life is astounding. You a very talented man. Kudos.
Superb, great idea and the washers idea is fantastic it's one of those things you would not have thought about until it was too late. many thx for another great set of ideas.
Always find myself going back in time to research these video's...i am using this technique to make dungeon walls for warcry catacombs 😁. Love these video's.
DM Scotty, I hope you realize how much you've influenced the table-top gaming community. Spectacular results with inexpensive materials. I've got an addition which further helps with weight. Glue 3 sides of the cardboard and sand first, then let dry. Before gluing the final side (leave the long side or the 'open' side) fill it with the sand then seal it as normal. You get a heavier piece like weighted chess pieces. Hope that helps add more to an already great piece! Thanks
You wanna guess what I'm doing over Labor Day weekend. Time to finally open up my crafter's kit and delve deep. Thanks for all the video info.....fantastic tutor !
Very nice utilitarian design to go with the new, utilitarian "floor" mats. I'm quite impressed with the updated system and I look forward to seeing what other innovations you have in mind. Also, its great to see Roderick back.
Very cool! Years ago, when my older brother ran his games, he used my plastiline modeling clay to roll out the lengths for his walls. I like this method for dungeon design and will definitely use it for mine.
Love Roderick charging into battle in a room with what appears to be at least two traps/torture implements. It's not D&D until someone charges headlong into battle before doing spot checks :)
Brilliant! I think these will more likely be used for my wargaming terrain, but you shouldn't mind that--crafting is flexible and you make it happen! :D
That was cool. Now I'm thinking of doing it with something I'm working on. By the way, when you sped up the video for various things like putting sand on or whatever I had the music for Benny Hill playing in my head for some reason. It seems to fit lol.
Nice tutorial. It struck me that if you sealed three sides of the cardboard and let it dry, you could pour the sand *into* the corrugation, then seal it, to give it even more weight.
DM Scotty, I bought some 3ft length pieces of wood (1/4 x 1/4) and (1/8 x 1/8) from my local hobby store for fairly cheap. I cut them to several desired lengths to represent walls. After that I spray painted each piece base black and followed it up with a spackled gray paint (texture). I'm now wondering if I should add detail for "brick style" as you did with the foam. Since it's real wood I'm not sure how to do that. The gray spackled look is "ok"....but not as detailed for a stone wall texture as I'd like. Any recommendation as to "next step" to improving them ?
I know this is a year old comment but for others looking, a dremel would be the easiest for adding details to wood for this. Using a cutting wheel and tracing over lines lengthwise and a cutting bit for the shorter lines.
Tried these myself. Spray paint messed them all up, even with the glue covering. Think I might try it just with hand painting unless you have another idea maybe?
Hey theDMsCraft - fantastic video! Thank you! I found you through the Crooked Staff, so I haven't seen everything. Just started with 2.5D Next videos. The paint you use here - what kind of paint should I be using? Sorry for the simple question; please keep up the good work and much appreciated!
Glad to help. I base spray my stuff with the cheapest flat black spray I can find. Make sure any foam is covered with a coat of glue as spray can melt foam. The other colors are just cheap acrylic craft paints.
Scotty you are the best, but Im a little confused. Is this still your recommended method? Why not just the cardboard plus the gray textured stone spray from the other videos? I know those were just hot glued to the floors vs these being moveable. Is the sand for weight only? Or texture only?
@@theDMsCraft I see that now. I wasn't noticing that you had a 2.5D and 2.5D Next going on. I can see that the flat battlemat type of terrain with moveable walls would travel much easier. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing any points or weakness you later found with the original cardboard designs. I currently don't travel to game and really like that option. This weekend we shall go forth and craft.
In this, craftingwise 3rd. world country, I can only find foamcore with hard sides, almost like thin cardboard sides. Any tip on how to peel off a side of that?
So I have made a few walls, how long does it usually take for yours to dry? and how much glue do you use? The sand on mine is clumpy; maybe I used to much glue.
Thanks, did you fill the corrugation completely full with glue? like to the point, it comes out the other side, or just enough to dip it in the sand. Because I filled it pretty full with glue.
Just enough to fill the holes...not all the way through...remember it is better to go with less because if you miss some spots it is easier to go back and fill.
Could I make the walls higher? Instead of two corrugated cardboard high, can I try three or four corrugated cardboard high? Would that make the walls unbalanced?
A lot of furniture comes in this type of box...a lil' dumpster diving can get all you need. A metal straight edge can really help you cut them straight.
Scotty, do you know what this foam is called in europe? - I keep searching for it but can't find anything like it... 0o THX in advance and keep up the awesome work, dude!
They are a pretty rare find for me in Europe as well. They do pop up at discount shops from time to time. I just found these in Germany: www.amazon.de/ULTNICE-Schaumstoff-Blätter-Handwerk-verschiedene/dp/B076ZSN9WH/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1511437014&sr=8-14&keywords=ultnice+Home+decor

a good way to save money and not a waste of foam core board I seem to always get some good info from your videos you and black magic craft are great

Here is a small tip for taking off the outer paper layer of some foam core board: heat it a bit with a hot air gun (be carefull of the fumes)
Great stuff. Thanks for sharing
I AM SO ENTERTAINED!

This is the best! Loving the 2.5 d next system... You're a flipping genius
Why thank you....have fun!
You are just brilliant! I am so inspired. Thank you for your posts.
Very welcome =)
How about filling the corrogated cardboard with the Sand, before applying the second side of glue? Would be heavier ^^
Brilliant! I think these will more likely be used for my wargaming terrain, but you shouldn't mind that--crafting is flexible and you make it happen! :D
Very True =)
Finally a use for those encyclopaedias from the 80's, stopping warping!
Haha i was thinking a use for all those big red dictonaries we had to buy for school and never used ^^
I jumped the gun a bit, but got plenty of pieces ready to finish off; great vid and cool idea!
Awesome as always!
Your vids are a great boon to any crafter.
thanks for the vid and keep'em coming

Wow! Great work dude, I know one of my players will love this.
Awesome!
very useful! i love it. have to try out...
I have been waiting for these!!! This has been killing me.
Need to watch this as soon as I get home.

+Keith Olson Good point.
Putting play sand on the side will put that much more weight on the wall? Oh well the more you knows haha! Thanks for the vids Scotty! :D
Sure will and also make them very strong.
Yeahhh finally!!!!!!!
For newcomers to your vids / channel you should have the PiP vids you have up near the end actually link to the relevant vids ATM they don't

You should advertise that this technique comes with a free super realistic giant beetle model.
truth...lol
Tried these myself. Spray paint messed them all up, even with the glue covering. Think I might try it just with hand painting unless you have another idea maybe?
Sorry to hear that. You can hand paint them with black acrylic craft paint and you will not have the same problem.
That was my thought as well. It will just take longer. Anyway thanks for the videos. I hope to get this grid system implemented in my campaign soon!
happy gaming.
My number one question for you is where did you record this? Were you at work, or church or like a rec center an old folks home?
An area at my work.

Showing alternate ways of doing things. These can be more modular. The sand is good for bothweight and texture.

I've had problems with my corrugation being to large and the sand just falling through. I am going to add paper to the edge to be my glue surface.
Nice mod...some cardboard has larger corrugations.
RIP the bug
Died for art...lol
Would you ever consider selling sets ?
Hey Scotty. What inspired you to use those particular dimensions? Would you do it the same if you were starting over?
Yep
Could the foam board be used for the floor mats?
In this, craftingwise 3rd. world country, I can only find foamcore with hard sides, almost like thin cardboard sides. Any tip on how to peel off a side of that?
Soak or spray with soapy water.
So I have made a few walls, how long does it usually take for yours to dry? and how much glue do you use? The sand on mine is clumpy; maybe I used to much glue.
I filled the corrugations with glue...dipd them in the sand and then scrape off any access.
I think they would be fine.
Thanks!
Hey where did you get that thick tight corrugated cardboard? and how do you cut them so straight and neat?
A lot of furniture comes in this type of box...a lil' dumpster diving can get all you need. A metal straight edge can really help you cut them straight.
What like a T-Square and an X-acto knife? is that what you mean?
You can get rulers that are metal and these are good for cutting. A Xacto could work but I just used a box cutter retractable knife.
thank you for the tip! an Thank you for creating 2.5D next !
Very welcome....have fun.
What sort of tool do you use to cut your cardboard so that it has such a clean edge? it seems to be a place where i am having trouble.
Suede Wheeler Use a sharp box cutter and change blades as often as needed.
Scotty, do you know what this foam is called in europe? - I keep searching for it but can't find anything like it... 0o

Try searching for foamecore or foambaord.

In spain it's called Cartón-pluma and it's really cheap
please make a tutorial to make a beholder's mini
do you have to use play sand or could you use regular sand?
Kishinow Jerome Make sure to use play sand.
All in all it's just another brick in the wall.
heh heh, yep
How are you going yo handle stairs going down on the modular mats?
Optical illusion.
theDMsCraft magic
why not just use cheap isolation thick foam or simple box foam ?
Always an option, I wanted weight to the walls to keep them from sliding around. Also easier for people without foam cutting tools.
Can't seem to get the white foam board unless I buy 25 of them. :-(
ohhh, were do you live?
@@theDMsCraft the sticks in Central NY. I could have driven to Michael's but it's an hour away. I found one for 5 bucks at local store as luck would have it. I'll be making walls over the weekend!
Oh understand.
How wide did you make the wall?
+Luca makarushka-napp ummmm....watch the vid and it will show you.
+theDMsCraft Thanks
So, what do you use in 2017?
Check out my Tilescapes vids but I still use most of the stuff I have crafted.
I won´t put the hot glue to the bottom, I think is better without it :/
Your videos are like Lay's potato chips. Gotta move on an CRAFT ON !
