CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Fate and destiny are on the side of Helen (Gwyneth Paltrow) and James (John Hannah), as they meet once again in an elevator.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
British actor Peter Howitt wrote and directed this British romantic comedy-drama with a "road not taken" premise recalling the 1921 play If by Lord Dunsany (1878-1957), Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life (1946), and O.Henry's short story Roads of Destiny (1909). Howitt's storyline branches in two directions: Helen (Gwyneth Paltrow) loses her job at a classy London PR firm, has a run-in with a purse-snatcher, and just misses catching her boyfriend Gerry (John Lynch) in bed with his former girlfriend Lydia (Jeanne Tripplehorn). But what if it were one of those days when everything goes right? As the sliding doors close while she stands on a subway platform in the London underground, Helen ponders the events in her alternate reality. The plot of Lord Dunsany's If also hinges on a future determined by catching or missing a train. Sliding Doors was shown at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival.

They were always meant to be. The other her met James in the wrong time. This universe, she met him in the right time.
So it's about Fate, and not mere chance...?
@@oddish4352 I think it's more about the fact that things happen in their own time, and sometimes the worst things need to happen in order for those things to play out in the right way. Helen wished she'd caught the train because she had a bad day, and in the alternate reality wherein she did catch the train, after she caught her boyfriend cheating on her and started to have this great life without him and met this great other guy, she was probably glad she caught the train. But then she died and all of that was cut short. In the actual reality (the prime timeline) she missed the train and was stuck in a relationship with a guy who was cheating on her and gas-lighting her, and had to find out about it in the worst way, but it all worked out in the end. So there's no use fussing about what could have been or "if only", because the pain and hardships in life can actually lead to better things.
@@Sourcoolness A case of how worrying too much can almost effect how your life works, but not worrying at all makes one oblivious to the reality? Either way i'm glad they met in the right path.
I'm not much for romantic comedies, but I adore this movie. Maybe it was the whole concept of the alternative lives.
This isn't really a romcom, maybe thats why.
one of the most beautiful twists in cinematic history
Love Gwyneth Paltrow’s indifferent look throughout the movie. She should have won an Oscar for this rather than for ‘Shakespeare in love’.
I agree!!!
I just saw this movie with my mom and stepdad, absolutely adored it.
I love this last part.
I love this scene because it is filmed in my local hospital. It's amazing indoors - lots of art displayed. Also it's a great hospital with nice medical staff working there!
Kitty Metal is it in Fulham Road?
Is it Chelsea and Westminster hospital? I was there om Tuesday lol and this one of my fav films so omg!!
@@scdobserver835 Yes, not far from Fulham Broadway. [I only just saw your comment now - sorry for a really loooong delay responding!]
@@georginalewis837 It's definitely Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. When I take a lift I think of the film! Also, in the background of a scene they showed one of the clinics I used to go to (now it's moved & they re-modeled the clinics). I hope you are well! 💐
Does anyone else get goosebumps watching this final scene...as the elevator's SLIDING DOORS operate?
This, and the dance-floor kiss between Marty's parents in Back to the Future: Two great Hollywood moments involving romantic fate.
come on . . Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight trilogy
Hell yes
I love the rest of the movie but I watch it again and again for this ending. It would have been one thing to just have them meet again in the elevator but to tie it back to the Monty Python line 😭
Interesting ending. After 90 minutes of explaining that events in our lives are determined by sheer chance, as opposed to fate... they say "nope, it's all about fate."
I didn't see it like that. I think we all have certain path and sometimes we take the long away around to get there. Sometimes it just does not happen. But some things are determined (like the fact that she got pregnant both times and got into the hospital). If it was sheer chance, she wouldn't have been in the same situation twice. In my opinion :)
@@Elvire91 In a sense, that was my point. In one reality, Helen's life goes down the tubes. In the other, it takes off for the stars. And all because of one made/missed train. In other words, free will at its finest and most terrifying. But then she meets James in the other reality, suggesting that fate, not free will, controls her destiny.
@@oddish4352 I think our choices, traits, fancies and habits dictate certain aspects of our lives, in ways we cannot predict. Therefore it is possible for certain things to be very likely to happen to us. So it's possible that her path in life and James' path are quite intertwined given their choices, traits, fancies and habits.
Regardless, they just seem to run in the same circles (given all their encounters in the movie - train, bar, street, restaurant, hospital) so it was likely for them to meet sooner or later anyway.
@@R8r84es4 Well, at least she dumped that PARASITE at the end. Long time coming, that.
As a brit, I think Gwyneth paltrow nailed the accent, not forced or caricature
When I first watched this I thought she was English Idk why people thought it was bad
PS I'm a brit too x
This was so much better than Shakespeare in Love and holds up perfectly after 24 years.
i love this movie! reminds me of when I was 12, watching it recorded on VHS, after middle school, good times. I'll always be romantic.
the same! 12 and watching on VHS over and over :)
I didn't think you liked Elton John
Best line of the movie
I like John Hannah accent
soulmates
I like how the theme is basically that time is immutable. Even in different timelines her life ended up the same, and there were parallels throughout anyway
Also like how she missed the “sliding doors” of the elevator - only that time she met James because she missed the elevator, not because she made it.
God timing is everything ❤
All time favorite movie
Gwyneth Paltrow looks so beautiful with auburn hair 😍♥️
This film always makes me think what a great actress Gwyneth Paltrow is as she comes across as being totally normal.
Whereas in reality, she's as mad as a box of frogs.
is she really crazy in real life? like scientology?
how is she crazy?
First time watching this ❤ nice
So I suppose the moral of the story is that break up is the most effective when it happens after a slow and painful process of sinking to the rock bottom rather than simply catching him cheating on you.
Haha I guess it is a about faith and not so much about the idea of "what if" that we like to think about
No, the moral is that after we spend 90 minutes demonstrating that our lives are governed by chance and free will, the movie says "Just kidding, guys, it's all about Fate."
In the end she still meets james. It was ment to be, evan when having missing the train.
"Draw me a sheep!"
...
"This is only his box. The sheep you asked for is inside."
"Make me an awesome movie!"
...
"These are two alternate realities, and the movie you want starts at the end."
"That is exactly the way I wanted it!"
Nobody expects the spanish inquisition
That is truly beautiful story!
I adore this movie
Did anyone get that short blonde haircut hoping to look like Gwyneth Paltrow and end up looking like Elton John?
Live and learn, I guess. 😅
Best ending to a somewhat forgotten and underrated film about the mystery of fate. I loved it & all the four major characters in it were relatable & life like 👌👌👌👌👌
The ending with the music & the last line is just subtle & phenomenal 👍 The very fact that the makers ended it on that "maybe, hopefully, definitely" note was a gr8 touch. Gwyneth Paltrow's best film and best performance & probably the only one where she is likable from beginning to end 😇😇😇
I remember seeing this end scene in the cinema .... everyone in the audience cheered !
I love this movie 😢❤
Those two would eventually join the MCU, with GP as Pepper Potts in Iron Man and JH as Holden Radcliffe in Agents of SHIELD.
If you like films about an alternative universe I recommend 'Quest for Love' made in 1971
wait.. what if she caught the elevator
The movie starts again =)
The movie starts again
Sliding Doors II: The Revenge
I said the same thing lol
It's called a 'lift' in the UK matey !
But the real Sliding Doors were the friends she made along the way.
I only see Pepper Potts. I also remember him as Holden Radcliffe from Agents of SHIELD.
leaving the human version of Brian from family guy led her to meet the adult version of Stewie from family guy. beautiful ending
I just hope she watches out for passing vans this time around.....
It was meant to happen just at a later date
good that here are people who regognize sarcasm.
How did she know the answer???
My name is James Hammerton!
Es la cancion original del ending Patty Larkin Tenderness on the Block ya que en las demas fue reemplzada por Aqua Turn Back Time , un final abierto que da muchas interpretaciones =D
Nice accent Goopy! What part of Canada are you supposed to be from!
What was that location flashback for when she woke up? Did the helen from the timeline that died swap places with the one that survived that is why she has memories of james? Does she know james without james knowing it when she entered that elevator?
In a way, she's living both of them simultaneously, that's why she has memories of the other timeline. Remember when the version of her that doesn't catch Jerry cheating is walking by the Thames and says she somehow knew there was a boat race that day?
They wanted a twist at the end.
And I was wondering why male characters looks in English movie look Italian
It’s a shame they didn’t go with the Zevon original.
Sad that the short hair Helen died poor James had to suffer
It's ironic that in her short hair life she took off like a rocket: dumped the parasite, started her own PR firm. In her long hair life, she crashed and burned: did crap jobs to support the parasite while he two-timed her. But then, their respective luck changes...
the music could have been louder
Mrker
They could have gone with the Warren Zevon original, which is much better
who is singing this version of tenderness on the block ?
Patty Larkin
@@badkitty560708 thanks
My fave version 😆😆
@@DavesDeepDive
yep,
wish i could find a full length copy.
of course i also like the original by zevon.
@gray man 👏 well said, that version is great too - and I'm so with you on getting hold of a full length version - I remember searching back when the film released to no avail, and here I am, coming back to this video just to hear that tiny part 😆 love it!!
If she never met him, how does she know what to say in the lift?!
She answered him with a famous quote from a Monty Python sketch so, obviously they are going to have a similar sense of humour which is always a good beginning, in my opinion. 🥰
Multiple times in the movie she has memories from both timelines. Some part of her probably remembers him telling her that.
Deja vu, in a modified form?
It's suggested that the timelines have merged.
anyone know the title of song in background and who sings it?
This is a cover of "Tenderness on the block" performed by Patty Larkin. Original version of "Tenderness on the block" is performed by Shawn Colvin. Due to copyright and recording issues, this track was never released and is only available in the movie.
*****
thanks for solving this mystery for me
it has been a long search
***** original version from warren zevon
***** thank you very much copyright laws :(
This song arrangement is much better than the original one! The sole case in music history
Cannot understand what they said in the last scene. Any help?
"You know what the Monty Pyson boys say?" - "Nobody expects the spanish inquisition!"
God's timing is the best.
😉😘
😘😉
Me too!! :3
Which song is this please attach link
tahnk you dido
Was there not a single British actress available?
It's called acting
Minnie Driver and Gillian Anderson were originally considered to play Helen
So he isn't THE James from this dimension right? Wondering why he didn't look quite surprised. 🤔
But she was the helen that died from the other dimension that is why she knows james while james doesn't know her when she passed by the elevator. Her memories of james was carried to her surviving self when she woke up.
Wait...I thought Helen died. This is stupid?
she died in the one reality and lived in this one
she died i he had caught the train. She didn't in this version of her story. What remains is that she would have found him. Not stupid at all, she has different haircuts to distinguish between the 2 timelinesXD
Not stupid.
There are two versions of Helen...the one who caught the train and make up her new life dying at the end...and meeting James who made her the promise of loving her forever....
And the one in which she lives in a lie...and finally lives finding her soulmate.
We were bouncing between two parallel realities. In one she made the train, in the other she missed it, and we see the very different paths her life took. And yes, in one of the two realities, she died at the end.
So which one was true?
