    Hanabie has been blowing up lately. You can't help but love them. They are cute, unique, and heavy.
    They have been playing shows outside of Japan, and gaining new fans at a steady rate.
    They call their style "Harajukucore". Hardcore music out of the Harajuku district of Tokyo.

    "Hanabie" is a Spring season-word in haiku poetry and refers to a cold wind that blows when the cherry blossom trees bloom (which is soon in Japan). This band started in 2015, did a crowdfunding in 2020 to stay afloat financially and produce an album-it paid off. They've gotten popular overseas but before that they were regulars at various girl-band/group events on the club circuit in Japan often performing with the likes of Trident, Wagamama Rakia, Code of Zero, among others. Chika their current drummer is their fourth, no other personnel changes-she was the house drummer at a club near the city of Nagoya, rather obscure, but has fit in really well.

      Hanabie have elements of being a real life BABYMETAL with some Band-Maid and other bands such as TRiDENT, having been around and underground nearly as long. TRiDENT and Hanabie are both bands of school friends where BABYMETAL were produced from a fake idol school a couple of years before - it’s like life imitating art. I find it interesting that Yukina was a maid like Miku, both are super outgoing powerhouses of energy and confidence, in public at least - I guess that’s just a natural money spinner when you’re at school or at that age if you have that kind of personality.
      Side note: Japan’s music education program leads to great things, as did Iceland’s. Oddly, both spawned awesome heavy metal bands too. I think that shows metal is inherently far more popular than popular culture wants us to believe.

    • @otobokegaijin6218
      @otobokegaijin6218 3 місяці тому +12

      @@allanmoger1838 It's true that music education in Japan is advanced. An aspect of it is the popular music clubs that exist at most Japanese high schools. Just about all the members of the Japanese bands that I can think of are products of those clubs. Another factor is the prevalence of music schools, whether of the two-year vocational type or the four-year academic type. Many Japanese band members are graduates of those and have a solid foundation in music theory and performance. Also, Japan no doubt has, whether on an absolute or per-capita basis, the greatest number of live-music clubs and highly developed club circuits, including many fests and other events for all-female bands, which has allowed the Hanabies and Tridents to thrive. As far as the club scene for all-female bands goes, Japan is and has been light-years ahead of the rest of the world.

    Had the chance to see them live last year - they're amazing and totally legit - they are good live musicians and singers (and entertainers!) !
    The lady with blue hair is Matsuri and she's the composer (and second vocalist - clean tones). The purple one is bassist Matsuri (also in charge of design and costumes) (EDIT - HETTSU of course - never press "save" without rereading!). Tasmanian pocket devil is Yukina (growls, rap, chipmunk vocals). Sae was the drummer here but she left the band prior to their first world tour and was replaced by Chika (and she's amazing live!).
    This song is about sugar addiction and how to fight it! Most of their songs deal with very real issues affecting Japan's young urban generation: from the risks of dating apps to workplace harassment, procastination and video game addiction, but always with their own unmistikable style.
    Next song: I propose "Pardon Me I have to go now"

    If it helps, they're in Drop-D tuning, which is standard guitar tuning but the low E is tuned down to D. The "one chord" is D5, which might be why it's hard to determine the key, since they're only hitting the root and the 5th. (And yes, maybe 2 notes technically doesn't constitute a chord, but in guitar-land that debate was lost in the 80s.)

    The root genre genre of their music I'd say is "metalcore" which is a hybrid of thrash metal with hardcore punk. I'm not sure, but was that reoccurring chord you mentioned an open E power chord? Very common for heavy songs to circle around the open E power chord in one way or another due to the "heaviness". It's the palm mute technique that gives metal and heavy music in general the heavy guitar "crunch" sound. Yes, they play out live. Have been touring Europe and the U.S., probably some other countries too I would guess. Saw them in NYC last winter. If you looked into Hanabie, you probably know by now that Maximum the Hormone they cite as their primary inspiration. This would be a good video to see why. Has a nearly 1.5 minute long intro but you can hear a little of their other music during it. ua-cam.com/video/IC-wDpwzEt4/v-deo.html. Another artist I'd recommend a reacts video for is Kim Dracula ua-cam.com/video/X6o7RtOHpVc/v-deo.html. Don't know if you've been introduced to Lorna Shore yet, if not this will blow your mind in a different way. Very proficient musicians. And yes, the vocals are real. Technique is key, only has standard vocal effects like some reverb etc. ua-cam.com/video/qyYmS_iBcy4/v-deo.html. How about some Indian music? ua-cam.com/video/i4FqGPRQWFM/v-deo.html

      @@JudgeMingus Right, I misspoke. Would would have made more sense if I said open top string power chord. I never got past beginner on guitar so in my head it's hand position and not how the tuning is set. When I used to try to play, I was tuned to whatever my top string was at that day LOL.

    Well, I've been registered since your first Band-Maid video and I'm going to take advantage of this video to write my first comment.
    Little story, I discovered Band-Maid in 2020 (thanks COVID for that), I discovered Nemophila and Hanabie a little later, being a fan of rock and metal but also of anime, I was immediately hooked to these three groups and have listened to them since, even if I have a preference for Band-Maid and Hanabie who for me really have their own style but I digress.
    Concerning Hanabie, from memory, they started as a group doing covers of Maximum the Hormones, a famous Japanese metal group known for its variations of style, tempo ect ect (I recommend in passing), MtH could be compared to System of A down to a certain extent if that gives you an idea. So as a result, Hanabie has to keep this kind of “freedom” which can surprise and brings freshness.
    Regarding the vocal part, we mainly have Yukina (harsh vocals) and Matsuri (guitar and blue hair). Yukina is just cute and can sing in a cute way too, which contrasts greatly during the screamo passages (she's also adorable in a lot of videos via her facial expressions, but I digress again lol). Matsuri, sings in a more "classical" way but I find a real charm in her voice, perhaps a very sharp side, I don't really know how to describe it, I am neither a musician nor a singer, but she is part of the genre of female voices that have character just in their tone and that make me melt.
    In short, between the two of them and the music they produce within their group, I really liked it and I'm happy that the Yukina surprise worked for you ^^.

    AMAI MY MIND!!! The band’s name, 花冷え, is written in Roman characters from using the Hepburn system as HANABIE, to Indicate the Japanese pronunciation はなびえ(four MORA), which sounds something like “Ha-Na-Bi-Eh” (four syllables).
    HANABIE are Yukina (Vo.), Matsuri (Gu., Vo.), Hettsu (Ba., Vo), Chika (Dr.), the most recent of many drummers.
    The real name of this song is WARE AMATOU, which you see and hear throughout the video.

    I've been listening to these ladies almost 3 years I guess, since this video came out. I remember I was confused when I first saw them. At first it seemed like an idol group to me but they were playing their instruments. Which is unusual for an idol group. Also, the song didn't sound like typical alt idol music, even the ones that do similar genres. But I did know I really liked it.
    I know now that they are not an idol group. They are just some school friends and metalhead girls that decided to form a metal band when they were like 15 (the drummer is new to the band). They write all their music, mostly by Matsuri {vocals, guitar) and Yukina (harsh vocals, rap). There is an occasional song by Hettsu (bass, vocals). They've been around for almost 10 years now but just started blowing up last year.
    You can't go wrong with any of their videos. They sing about serious things that any young woman can relate to but still maintain a great sense of humor. Oh and Yukina (harsh vocals, rap) has a tendency to murder people in their videos, not always but a few times. If you want to hear one with a lot of hip hop/rap check out REIWA Dating Apps Generation.

    The song is is a commentary on Japan's fixation on staying slim while simultaneously encouraging overindulgence in sugary snacks.
    Hanabie calls themselves a Harajuku-Core band. They blend Japanese Youth culture fashion with social commentary and their own especially dark humor. They use wild fashion and crazy costumes (They did a live stream dressed entirely in Winnie-the-Pooh costumes) and sometimes they blend in trad Japanese instruments. The bass player is their fashion guru and usually hangs back but occasionally come up front and goes over the top. Hanabie is consistently entertaining - not surprising since they started in high school as a Maximum The Hormone cover band. (MTH is another band you should check out)

    Hanabie (pronounced HAHN-a-bi-ǝ)
    This is what you get when Babymetal and Maximum the Hormone have a love child. They actually started in high school, playing MTH covers. Clearly one of THE new metal bands to watch. Most of their songs are quite pointed, concerning social issues like dating app abuse, sexual harassment, drugs, human trafficking, cheating etc. “We Love Sweets” is about having an unhealthy relationship to sugar. Members:
    Vocalist (Harsh, rap)- Yukina
    Guitarist and Clean vocals - Matsuri
    Bassist and backing vocals - Hettsu
    Drums - Chika (replaced Sae in 2023)
    (Their producer, Gaku Taura, is also the drummer for Crystal Lake. He sat in on drums for Hanabie when they were between full-time drummers.)
    They have aleady put out two albums and toured Europe and North America.

    Finally, you found these ladies. This song has some of the sickest metal I have heard for a pretty long time. They're pronounced as "Ha(h)-na(h)-bi-e(h)" by the way, which has a totally different meaning from Hanabi. (Yes, that extra "e" at the end definitely makes a huge difference). Anyway, I'm sure many other comments say the same thing too.
    You are so going to love this band.

    So, Hanabie started out as a Maximum the Hormone cover band (notably, MtH’s drummer, Nao-chan, was an inspiration for Akane from Band-Maid and Murata Tamu from Nemophila; she showed it was possible for girl drummers to drum hard, loud, and fast). If you’re gonna do Maximum the Hormone, you should probably start with “Yoshu Fukushu”

  • @rolandkarlsson7072

    Definitely - you need more Hanabie.
    I see that you already have got hints on how to pronounce it.
    Here is my preferred list of songs
    * We love sweets
    * Neet game
    * Odo (cover of an Ado song)
    * Be that gal
    * Pardon me, I have to go now
    * OTAKU Lovely Densetsu
    Personally I would stay with music videos and then switch to live when you are a fan.
    They are so good at making music videos, both sound and cinematography.
    And the live ones are so different quality.

    Great first time reaction! First of all, the English lyrics are right in the description. They are very interesting, lol. I have been a fan since May 2022. I saw them live last year in Orlando and then flew to Denver to see them with my son. Here are the members of Hanabie: Yukina - Growling Vocals, Matsuri - Guitar and Clean Vocals, Hettsu - Bass and Chika - Drums. The drummer in this one is Sae, also very good. She is now the drummer for Code Of Zero X. Chika made her debut in Tousou and was able to do the world tour last year. Chika is a great drummer. After this video, they did NEET GAME. And after that followed three videos in a row, which are referred to as the "Bad boss trilogy". It's a little harder to find the bad boss in the third one, but he's there. Here are those videos with the links: NEET GAME ua-cam.com/video/PLfZ54FUG5w/v-deo.htmlsi=4PJjb7SJGxaSeqaH

    Hanabie (Ha-Na-Be-Eh) got their start in high school as a MAXIMUM THE HORMONE cover band (they are VERY influential in Japan) MTH uses multiple time, key and genre changes in the same song. The guitarist, Matsuri, usually sings the chorus in their songs. The bassist, Hettsu, is usually the backup singer for Yukina, who is the main singer and growls. Hanabie released a single called, OTAKU Lovely Densetsu that is AMAZING! Check it out.
    I'll let you know HOW influential MTH is. The drummer for Band Maid, Akane Hirose, did not know girls were allowed to play rock drums until she saw Nao from MTH playing. Check out their song, Yoshu Fukushu. Btw, Nao sings as well.

    That growl is coming from Yukina, who is 4'10". Can't wait to see them in May! They do world tours almost constantly. No meet and greets sadly though, because none of them speak hardly any English at all. I hear they get really wild and energetic at their live shows, though.
    I know the pronunciation is always going to be tricky, but it's "hah-nah-bee-yeh" basically. In non-English words, you almost always pronounce the E at the end.

The chord grind is definitely a signature of Matsuri and her vocal melodies are always quite surprising. Check out "Reiwa Dating Apps Generation" for all of the things you loved about this song but Trap style. Hanabie = Han-ah-bee-eh = #Harajukucore = 🔥🔥🔥🔥 I finally persuaded their wiki page to mention that their genre is Harajukucore. 🙄 I’ve been listening to them since 2018 when they released their EP “Cherry Blossoms are Blooming” and then they released one of the best albums of the pandemic “Girl’s Reform Manifest” which is where ‘Sweets comes from. They have since released another album “Reborn Superstar”, and given Matsuri’s (gt/vocal) genius, I’m not arguing with the title. It’s also as epic as the other two CDs.
    Hanabie are big on social issues and seem to have the morals and ethics you’d hope young people have, and increasingly don’t. Workplace abuse, dating apps, junk food, reclusion, gaming culture, PMS - they make music about it all! Matsuri’s genius is providing perfect moods for any given subject while being 100% Hanabie every step of the way.
    Hanabie are top of the category for me, if the category consists of all female rock and metal bands from Japan and Korea*. This just proves it isn’t always about the most complex or best performed or produced music, it’s about how much it appeals to any individual. I appreciate LOVEBITES far more than I listen to them, for example.
    *Some of these band’s members embrace being female and the juxtaposition that has in rock, as well as being Japanese and using that perceived inherent cultural difference to the west, and some do not, they just want to be seen as mainstream bands in world music. I see it more as a category that lets you know you can expect quality music with certain nuances, delivered professionally by accomplished musicians. If you say “Japanese girl’s bands”, which is a term they use in their own industry, then you generally have a clue as to what they are about. Hanabie are one of the mild deviations, they are just a bit more of everything, and I love it.

    Welcome to _Harajuku-core!_ ❄🌸
    Hanabie (Ha-na-be-eh) refer to their particular style as *Harajukucore,* named after the Harajuku district, that inspires their look and music. Harajuku is famous for its fashion, shops, music, and art scene. *Harajukucore* is an energetic mix of metal, electronic, rock, punk, rap, pop, etc. They will even incorporate traditional Japanese instruments into their songs, as well.
    The members are Matsuri - guitar, vocals, compositions. Yukina - growls/clean vocals. Hettsu - bass, backing vocals. Chika - drums and newest member.
    Here's a few song recommendations for you - 'Be the GAL - early summer ver.', 'NEET GAME', 'Envy', 'Reiwa Dating Apps Generation', 'Tousou' (run away).
