Wyatt needs his own channel, Hes a natural personality with loads of knowledge
As someone who's never worked on a diesel before, this is some awesome info. Definitely digging this series.
@@fadingbeleifs well if you know how to work on it those Idi's last a very long time
Referring to ether as 'Cosby in a can' may be the best thing I've ever heard on UA-cam.
Wyatt is awesome. I hope you do more diesel's and have him on more. I've learned so much about diesel's from him.
The diesel guy is an awesome addition to the team. Never let him leave :D Funny and informative. Greets from Germany! :P
Let's never forget the determination of the starter.
When he had the noisy starter the second time scared the shit out of me😂😂
Wyatt is so full of energy (and knowledge).. Really brought up your mental state working on this truck. Awesome!
45:34 that rev was like the idi said "I'm back brother" to the red powerstroke 😫 so damn moving
We need the other guy on here more often! Dude's hilarious
Kinda annoying. He won’t ever shut up, and people with a“chirpy/singsongy” voice especially irritate me...
@@akinoffury2332 Yeah, agreed. This is most hilarious episode ever on Junkyard Digs. :D
He sounds like a legit car show host, and he sounds like he knows what he's doing. Smart cookie!
I have never seen a more satisfying start in my life. After the last video I needed this so bad.
I for one, love the exhaust note of the old IDI's, especially the turbo IDI's.
Agree 100%
We had an ‘88 F-350 with the N/A 7.3 IDI and later a ‘93 F-350 with the factory turbo 7.3 IDI, and they sound soooo damn good!
A mean growl at idle, and similar to big block gas engine sound up high
I wish the new diesels sounded as good as these old beasts do
Personally I think these IDI’s sound best with the factory exhaust too, but most prefer straight pipes in these
I really like the way they idle. Just a smooth sound. The 6.5 Detroit’s sound similar
Michael Corrin you are correct. Not many know that, as Ford purposely published numbers lower than what it made, and that’s even with fitting that very restrictive downpipe. They did that so the Powerstroke would look more impressive. But even stock a factory turbo 7.3 IDI made more low end torque than the first gen 7.3 Powerstroke.
The Powerstroke did have better throttle response but I’d take an IDI over the HUEI Powerstroke any day of the week
The factory turbo IDI 7.3 is seriously underrated. It’s more than just a turbo mounted on top
It also had better valves, sodium filled on the exhaust, and a few other goodies as well
CubCadetMan 71 indeed those 6.2 and 6.5 diesels had a really nice sound as well 👍
She fired Right Up nice job Wyatt @Junkyard Digs
Beru is actually the motorcraft glow plugs, those are the good ones. Autolites are the worst possible things to put in an IDI. Especially with a mix, the beru don't heat as fast but don't balloon. Toss some autolites in and they cook and balloon up in half the time of the motorcraft plugs and it's even worse.
Bubbles strikes again😂. Happy u got her running so u can finally sell it .thanks for sharing as always 👍🏼💪🏽.
I've been watching these videos in the breakroom at work. One of the guys I work with heard it fire up and said it's about time! 😂😂
I just binged this entire 4 vid series and absolutely Loved it!! LOVE this channel and its personalities!! Nice Job Kevin!! 😉
you litteraly have a seat suspended on carpet there! love watching these old rigs dragged kicking and screaming back to life even if its only for a short time!
A qik fix buy replacement panels and sills for floor an easy fix, ford tuff!
r sprockets I did the whole floor, rockers, cab corners and all the mounts in my obs cab, never again!! Next time I’ll just buy a southern cab
The mechanic is a true genius and i so enjoyed watching this video. no cursing , just good enjoyable banter & the impart of the mechanic's experience without being arrogant with the amount of his experience at a relatively young age. Fellows, well done! Well done indeed. Peace, Lou Grossi
Wyatt needs to be a regular on the channel. Hes great on camera 👍👍👍
I was thinking Wyatt should make his own channel. I'd watch and learn from him for sure. Great sense of humor Bud.
I'm starting to go view your older material (I am up to date on the past 2 years 😁), and LOVE this series. Wyatt is a natural at this UA-cam's stuff.
You could put a good cab & front clip on one of those maybe 73-79 f-250 and use it as the channels official Tow truck
Not really worth it the frames look like theyre not long for this world
@@Beandiptheredneck even then he's asking too much for both, needing major repairs on most parts. The engine out of the black one is in bad need of a rebuild and most likely can't be due to cavitation. Every part of the powerstroke seemed bad except the transmission. They're really worth scrap price and not a penny more
Katie Young ya I would tend to agree, but maybe Kevin sees something we don’t
@@Beandiptheredneck maybe, maybe he's just pissed at the amount of money he's set to lose on it. I love the channel but I absolutely hate seeing people get discouraged and dislike diesels, and I hate seeing people charge more for items than they're really worth
"No name, made in Beru, I see a lot of these" bahaha...the Beru ones are the ONLY ones you should be running in a 7.3. Autolites will balloon and break on you, Berus will not. Not to mention the Berus are OEM, and actually a quality plug 👍
"Or I just broke the tip off and I'm really sad,......... She's comin! Aha!" Just when I turned on the volume that's what I hear, and that's what everyone else heard that was nearby.
I've got an old 7.3 IDI flatbed tow truck back behind the shop. Now I know how to get it running, many many thanks.
I love watching the dynamics of your channel. Learning never stops as there is always someone who has knowledge that keeps firing neurons in a similar way to Wyatt breathing life into old, seemingly tired but functional powerhouses. Kudos to you all! Engineering at it's best- raw, common sense and a touch of 'lets just try it!'
This guy’s humor is a great compliment.
Ordered shirt. Send me me glow plug. I'll send you some broke stuff back.
Use Deep Creep to free up stuck rings. Lubricates without drying everything out.
I got the rings on a locked-up diesel reefer unit motor that had been sitting for a year to free up and the unit started like a champ.
Damn thing still runs and that was five years ago.
You have no idea how happy I am to see you in the hands if a diesel guy. I'm just glad the sauce didn't kill it.
That guy really knows his stuff with diesel engines, was so interesting to listen too
You explained some of the basics of diesel engines, I really appreciate it. Thank you! Good job guys!
Sometimes you have to call in a heavy hitter for some help. Great series and even greater friends you have.
That starter, tho. What a frustrating but ultimately rewarding video series! Hope both trucks went to a good home!
"A few grand for this one and a couple of grand for that one."
Love the precision!
Wyatt was a really accomplished diesel mechanic and good at explaining stuff!! VERY entertaining viewing.
Gotta give the old girl credit for still running that well, all things considered. Love the mini-series!
I had many tow trucks, that was one of them and I drove it everywhere and kept it clean as a whistle. Lots of cool memories!!!!
Congratulations. You got a good diesel engine education out of that experience!
I'm loving these entertaining revival sagas. I appreciate getting to experience hard work mostly pay off, especially when it's fellow Iowa folk taking the spotlight.
My family's from around Ankeny & Elkhart while I'm presently stuck living in the Twin Cities. Once I get a timing belt in my Sienna van and some time off I'll be headed back to Polk and Story counties for some good times but until then I appreciate the experiences y'all bring to my screens.
I'll buy some winter merch when I'm not broke from van repairs!
I frikking love the sound of a 7.3!!!
It’s very rare to have so many friends that are not only incredibly knowledgeable but have very good on screen presence and able to explain their trade in a simple but detailed way. Also Kevin is a great straight man to many of his friends’ humor (Wyatt, Luke, Angus, Mook…)
I really enjoyed watching part 2, of this ford diesel. After watching part 2, it looked like a fuel pump issue. Love the content 👍👍👍👍
Glad Wyatt is with you. Noticed that Jacob left. And Mook just stayed away. And Wyatt seems to know his stuff. And that’s 1/2 the problem with Diesel engines. Sounds good the new glow plugs and fuel system cleared up the problem. Now you can let these go with a little confidence. That’s the key little. Congratulations it sounds like a diesel.
💯👍👊
Me: change the oil!
also me PUT IT IN THE KETCHUP!!!!
35:52 Sounds just like the engine rev that's in all the intro's, put a smile on my face.
This is why I love watching diesel will it starts. These things sit forever, and with little work... Boom!
I'm not usually a fan of V8 diesels, but the exhaust note of that truck is epic.
Wyatt is awesome. Thanks for the series, thoroughly enjoyed.
My word Wyatt's knowledge is incredible thanks for getting him onboard I learnt a bunch of stuff and he's hilarious
This was a good watch. Its great when they fire up again.
The sound of that 1/4inch snap on ratchet is music to my ears
your buddy is a smart guy ...well done
I've always loved diesels I just applied for my dealer license and having a truck like that would be awesome to haul around cars
“batreee” 😂😂. He said it. VGG infiltrates the camp once more lol
Oh WOW im very impressed how good it started up and it's sounds wonderful a real BAD ass truck. And i learn a lot Thank You.
Time for you and Luke to do a tow truck field rally!! Awesome video!
That was awesome!! Great episode, I even learned a lot about diesel engines. Great info, you should have Wyatt on the show again.
2 THINGS that shouldn't surprise you...
1. Engines want to run no matter how old.
2. You're going to hit 1 Million Subs!
I’m hoping you guys are videoing the goings on at Cornstar farms for a future video 😁 I love these old ford trucks, glad to see it roar to life
You just have to LOVE Wyatt's persona!! I have watched this series a bit and will say he's that dude! LOVE THE CONTENT!!!
Beru (the glow plug brand) is a German OE manufacturer, they make good parts from what I've seen buying Mercedes-Benz replacements they make.
Appreciate the knowledge, (and correction.) Will put it to use in the future. Cant be right about everything.
No, they are CCP made crap these days. BERU of old was a great company but I have had lots of problems with customers buying the parts cheap on the 'bay only to have plugs, leads and caps fail. Rotors burn the tips out and caps leak spark across the terminals.
Bought a set of Motorcraft glow plugs for an IDI last year, inside the bag they're Beru's. Not sure if that has always been the case but all the old forums say to go Motorcraft for these (and to avoid Autolites) and that's what I got.
@@mimikomono Always heard FoMoCo are best. Hmmmm. I'm running Diesel Rx military grade.
I like the sound of that dieselmotor. Sounds like power to me.
I appreciate the Trailer Park Boys reference! Well done on the revival, guys!
I haven't laughed so much in ages. I hope that truck gets restored, the attention it's had, it deserves saving.
If you're ever in Nebraska you should come help me get my 66 mustang running
Damn thats a purty sound! I know every guy watching this was cringing at that starter snarling!! Call that instinct! Good job 👏
"a no name plug that's made in Beru"
BERU. The company is the leading manufacturer of diesel cold start systems with an estimated worldwide market share of 40% for glow plugs. In the field of ignition technology for petrol engines, BERU is one of the four major manufacturers in Europe.
My thoughts too.. Beru also make spark ignition coils, coil packs etc.. decent quality, I’ve never had an issue with any of their products I’ve used.
They're actually motorcraft level plugs. The only ones that should be used in an idi or powerstroke is Motorcraft/Beru as even Bosch has a chance to swell. The fact the Beru plugs were swollen was bad
Beru is the company that made the glow plugs for the IDI, the a IDI is an International Navistar Diesel it was not built by Ford.
Great job Wyatt....you to Kev!!!! Was fun lets do it again soon!!!
OMG I laughed so hard when you guys drove that POS wreck home. I have never seen so much smoke pouring out of the ass end.
Another great video and Wyatt really added to it. You should bring dude around more often!
Think you have a good partner, for these jobs handles camera well.
As A Former Yankee Boy that grew up in the Snowbelt /Rust Belt of Northeast Ohio back in the 1970's /80's before Moving to Tampa Bay Fla in the early 80's ..I enjoy watching you all work on that Ole Rusty Rotted Away stuff ..makes me laugh and brings back memories .....I only stick with Southern vehicles /Low Rust ..I couldn't do the rust belt anymore
I use a half a quart of 2 cycle oil per tank of fuel in my 94 6.5 or if I can get it, B5 Diesel without the 2 cycle oil. Keeps it all lubed and working.
I like bio diesel but usually use a fuel additive (Howes) all year round. You can use 2-cycle oil or used engine oil. The used engine oil is the old standard. Don't do it if you have a DPF...and i am not sure how the DOT will react if they dip your tank as you will have black diesel.
I do the same thing, but I don't use anywhere near half a quart. Maybe a few ounces. It doesn't take much.
Hi Guys That was awesome bringing the truck back to life I was watching and saying the same things needed to be done and am glad I was right But that Truck surely needs to have an engine rebuild and a Cab over haul
The part when Kevin said "battree" was pure gold!
Congrats on getting this DOG started! Relief!
Haven’t worked on a Diesel in 30 years or so it’s great to see young kids interested in this keep up the good work
I'm so not a diesel person, but y'alls chemistry is hilarious to watch :) I actually hope for more diesels just to see the two of you together. You definitely made this one very entertaining :)
im glad to see you got it running finally haha loving the diesel content for sure :)
Wyatt is a great addition to the Junkyard team. So knowledgeable
Loved the video
Ford IDI’s are absolutely the best sounding diesels ever made. Close second place goes to the ol 2 stroke Detroit’s
I like the 6.0 power stroke, the idi sounds cool too but the Detroit is hard to compare being a 2 stroke
This was awesome to watch, love the banter between you two!
"made in beru" th mate ? beru is definetly a quality brand
That cab corner is like the floor of my 81 Ford Granada!
Loved that it was finally running.
A thought/ question or two.
Would all that smoke go away if a oil change was done on that idi ? Wouldn’t hurt it.
Second an oil truck driver friend told me on diesels to help clean injectors out. He would dump can of transmission fluid in the diesel tank. Would that help with any issues junkyard is having with this idi ?
I remember having to get an old diesel running once with having almost no knowledge of how they worked. Once you understand them it's not too bad. Don't feel too bad, you had your hands full with broken fuel lines on that one. Glad you had someone to help you learn some things for the next time. I could tell you guys were in the sun too long. Starting to get a little loopy by the end lol. That was a lot of work and it turned out to be a pretty crappy truck, but you got it goin and managed to drive it out of there and not get pulled over either. I'd call that a job well done. 👍
*sees blow by*
How does it even run?
It's an IDI 🤷♂️ it'll always run
At 44:19, that's not how you use the stinger, you put it against the tire and there should be 2 L shaped arms in storage clips up by the front of the bed. You slide them into the square tubes at the back of the stinger and slide them against the tire. Then lift the car. There should be the down straps that go over the tires, but those are probably long gone
Anyone else notice that the driver fender says f150 @ 11:45
Probably rusted out and got replaced if you noticed the drivers side rocker
This guy really knows his stuff. Definitely keep him on the channel for sure.
"torqued to a quarter turn before they break", sounds about how I torque them on the 7.3s in the buses.
Pro Tip: Use performance stickers instead of bondo to fix rust. It’ll keep everything light and it adds horsepower!
"Screw it back n forth until you can get it out."
"This bad girl is TIGHT."
PREEEETTY sure I'm watching a romance novel in diesel flavor.
Me and my friends go by a scale of 8 year old tight to 60 year old which is so loose that it’s gonna fall off.
"Wanna lick it?"
@@hilljackzack7284 Sounds like you and your friends are some sick puppies.
SwapPart, LLC probably.
So are the rings stuck? or worn slap out? The jet black, goopy oil holds out some hope for stuck. Try Marvel Mystery Oil and if the result is too thin, try something thick like STP to balance out the viscosity. Then if your lucky, the rings might pop free and reduce that blowby.
