I've used pillow cases from the thrift store on my hunting trips as game bags for decades. They're cheap, strong, easy to pack away when folded flat, easy to wash and reuse, and when you have three or four with you on a hunt they can also be used in multiple other ways (such as your demonstrated) around camp. Great "multi-tool", actually.

I use old poly cotton pillow cases to store my dirty grills and fire tools. They breathe during storage and if I decide to wash them when they get gross or greasy there’s no issue. I can throw them in the wash w whatever detergent I want and keep using them. I also use long king size cases to store my plethora of tarp poles w silicone bands to keep them all bundled up.

I always carry one around with me in the winter to melt snow near a fire. It collects all the needles and dirt. I will also use as a pre-filter of course.

Some good ideas, Mark. Here are a few ideas you probably thought of in your list of 30: Use a wet pillow case draped over shoulders or neck to keep cool. Drape a dry one over or under your hat for extra sun protection and around your neck to keep off a chill if needed at night. Use one end as a dish cloth and the other as a dish towel. Put footwear in it and tie it up at night to keep bugs out if there's no room in the tent. Use as an entry mat in front of tent. Put firewood on it during winter when hot tent camping for easy clean up.

Was practical and fun. I usually take a thin fabric shopping bag for stick collection.

What a great idea for a video, Mark! So much so, that I'm going to start carrying a pillow case on my hikes. Thanks!

Great ideas there Mark. A bit akin to the usefulness of an extra pair of socks in the woods. So many uses to be had. My favorite of course is not applicable to the woods but rather as a Halloween treat bag haha. Thanks for sharing Mark!

I suppose you could carry it the old school hobo way by tying it to the end of a stick. If you had a red pillow case, you could use it as an emergency signal flag. ✌️🇺🇸🇨🇦✌️

Hey Mark, I have carried pillowcases for years myself. They are very useful. I have a couple of older videos for ideas on using pillowcases in the woods on my channel as well. Take care.

A simple and somewhat obvious way to use a pillow case is to gather one corner of the open end of the bag and tie it securely with you ubiquitous clove hitch and secure it to your tent, or hammock, or a tree branch. The bag is now ready to put your dirty socks, underwear, tee shirts, etc, etc. Just a way to keep a tidy camp.

G'day Mark, I guess there's those with it intact and those with it cut up/dissected and furthermore, general utility or emergency use.
Of course with priorities in mind, depends what else you have with you. A needle and thread opens it up for patching/repair of clothing for example.
Cut in strips, you'd get some cordage out of it for various reasons, doubled up and twisted, or a 3 ply plait. You could, though not sure I'd be wanting to do it thread by thread ; )
I did "cotton on" to the hint mate ; ) ... charcloth, or with oil/vas as an ignition source/flame extender. I'd suggest use the internal flap, or at least the top of the open end first. ...... so you still have an unholed bag.
I assume the heaving bag can double as a bear bag too.
Take an orange one and you've got a signal flag and/or panel. Or, cut it up for trail markers/way points.
Do-rag ... wetted in hot weather.
I reckon you could make a wide brimmed hat too ....... with some mucking around.
A sand, perhaps smoke, mask. And, you'd know far better than I; configured as a mask, could it help avoid snow blindness, or would it just freeze to your face ?.
With ice/snow, a cold compress, though a plastic bag might be better, as it is for a rubbish bag too.
Might be push'n it ....... but maybe fish or game trapping.
Wind deflector for small stoves. 3 sticks should do it, to get a "V"
Cant say I've tried a pillow case, but denim works ok-ish as a knife strop .... depending on the steel.
Hot pot handle insulation, ideally wetted.
Pour over coffee filter ; )
For all those pieces of kit that wont go back in their supplied bags !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does scream of a shemagh in many respects, which I always carry ..........
mind you, this is one "case" I'd be happy to carry as a single use item ........ for cold beers in the river ; )
Cant wait to see your list .... on top of those you've already mentioned, and I havent even checked out the other comments yet.
I reckon the ol' shemagh may well be getting a new mate soon ; ) Cheers Duke.

Hey Duke. You are first to get the charcloth hint. Lots of ideas here. I will be sure to add them to my list. Thanks for commenting

I use mine to keep items I have out of the pack and am currently using in camp when it gets dark. Maybe a little relevant now but definitely years ago when there were more external framed pack's around, tie it to the frame of the pack where it's rubbing to give it extra padding while hiking.

I would hate a stationary pillow. I’m not stationary 😂
I just use it as a regular pillow as I do on my regular bed. Is there a reason you have to tuck it in and brace it into place?

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  29 днів тому +1

You don't have to immobilize your pillow but as mentioned, most people find it slides off the air mattress too easily. Thanks for commenting
