Hard to believe that oil was 16 years old, it hardly looked dirty! A helpful tip for the less experienced that may be tackling this job- open the fill bolt before you open the drain bolt, just in case for some reason you can't get the fill bolt open (stripped or seized) you at least don't have an empty differential.
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor Thank you for your video, I am surprised at seeing the clear oil of 16 years old. In other words, the differential fluid had not been changed for 16 years???? My owner's manual requires differential fluid /transfer oil change once every 2 years ! I am wondering whether we have to do so strictly following Toyota recommended change interval.
Hi guys, first of all i just want to say thanks for this video. I have just one thing to say. I think that it's better to start with screw which you use to put oil into axle. Why? 16 yeras old, this screws saw allmost everything. If u would destory second screw well what then? I personally reccomend to start with second screw first just to make sure that u will be able to put new pół back to your axle:)
So when do you know it's full? When the gear oil start dripping out of the filler bolt or do you have to know how many liters or quarts the differential takes.thanks in advance.
Hello Peter very nice video. Can you please tell me which 10mm hex bit you are using ? I tried with a 10mm one (but not one with a wrench) and could not get clearance from one of 4 bolts from the shaft to the wheel. Do you need to lift the car to get to the filler plug ? Thanks rupert
Are you from Finland? Because your last name is "Finn" and you sound very Finnish. I just move back to the USA from Finland and it is hella nice to hear a Finnish accent. Plus, it's really hard to trust someone giving you car advice in the states. There are lots of good mechanics out here, but nothing as straight forward as asking a Finn about your car. Music to my ears.
The "Standard" oil Toyota uses is Hypoid gear oil API- GL5, and the viscosity depends on environmental temps. mostly driven. Typical Toyota rav4 uses either 80 or 80w-90. hypoid gear oil, GL-5 is because Toyota uses hypoid gear design. put a new crush washer on that drain plug before you torque it on.

Yes, the reason is Toyota's excellent metallic parts. They are very resistant against rust !
Timothy T good point! 👍🏻👍🏻
