Finally somebody pointed out how cool and superior the ioptron cable management is compared to other mounts. Even my CEM40 has 12V power and USB slot built in in the saddle. This is one of the reasons I bought the hem27 and not the AM5.
You're going to love it! Happy early Christmas! Be on the lookout for another video hopefully this weekend! I will have my seven month update on the mount along with a blog post. It will be what I love and what is lacking and an important update 👍
Hi Joey, just read your article on AM5 v HEM27. I think the reason HEM27 came out worse was because of scope setup. Even if the three extension bolts a rock solid simply putting scope axis further away from centre of mount rotation will amplify mount error. I suspect if you swapped scopes in the tests the AM5 would come out worse. However your setup does show own thing the distance from mount plate to rear of the mount for the HEM27 seems further than AM5 which makes it more likely to snag on things like filter wheels. Would be interesting to see a rerun on tests swapping scopes.
I actually changed my setup recently and dropped the front counter weight crap. I'm using the William Optics Swan Dovetail Plate for Losmandy Style Saddle and everything is balanced perfectly. I'll be running a test this weekend assuming skies are clear so see if it improves.
CARBON FIBER TRIPOD- Seems like you didn't extend the legs to show the actual max height. iOptron website says it has 21 inch to 36.8 inch adjustable height. Maybe it is shorter because it is 1/3 the weight of the LiteRoc tripod. Lower will be less susceptible to movement when there is a gust of wind. Just a thought.
I did not extend it I like it low as it will go and with the RedCat it's perfect. I still have the iRoc tripod from my GEM28 and use that with the iOptron pier for my Celestron Edge 8 with the HEM27
great video thank you. I am curious about your filter wheel clearance if you could rotate the rig to have the larger part of the filter wheel pointing up rather than down.
I have resolved the issue and getting way better guiding after upgrading to the William Optics Swan Dovetail Plate for Losmandy Style Saddle: 400mm. This allows me to have plenty of clearance as well to rotate the camera any old way. Also it balances a lot better as well!
100% but there are so many other things i don't like about the AM5. The power ports are not in a good place, the hand controller is not a true hand controller and this is ZWOs first mount.
So far I have not seen any spikes with guiding, it's been very solid in terms of RMS. If you jump to my blog I also have 7 months of my guiding you can look at, as well joeytroy.com/ioptron-hem27-the-final-chapter/

💯 it's sad that all the videos are just about the AM5. It's a solid mount but iOptron knocked the cable management out of the park!
My HEM 27 is arriving today. Despite no sign of clear skies for the next week, it still feels like Christmas.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to your video.
Thanks for the tip about DST!
You bet I ran into that headache and my meridian flip would keep failing and my guiding would just stop guiding.
thank you for this Joey - I'm about to get out the credit card for either AM5 or HEM27, your vid helped
I plan on some more videos just dealing with weather issues right now so not able to go out.
Never tried an AM5 but I will recommend the HEM27 to anyone. It's truly excellent, and well worth the money.
@@fredmercury1314 thank you sir

Nice video, at around 11.21 you couldn't screw the centre bolt in as you've missed the centre peg on top of tripod, It's on the spreader tray 🙂
Yeah I updated that in the second video I did 👍
@@JTAstro ah, I'd better subscribe then 🤣
@@gazza9839 for the record that wasn't my intention 🤣 iOptron watched the video and let me know I missed it haha.
The volume at 1:25 (intro) was a bit too intense. You might try adjusting your video tools to equalize it better.
I'll keep that in mind for future videos thanks for the input.
AM5 needs no balance it's in the specs, just needs a counterweight for heavier scopes.

nice mount! I'm sure you have figured out your at 35
Yeah been imaging a bunch with it. Fantastic mount for sure!
