Excellent and well-informed video, but carpet bagger refers to non-southern politicians coming to the south to hold political office after the American Civil War, and when pronouncing Illinois, do not sound the s.

That is not what a carpet bagger means. A carpet bagger dates back to the post civil war when certain Yankees moved to the south to exploit it. The south was in shambles and destitute after the civil war and some Yankees came to take advantage and exploit that. From the Webster dictionary- “a Northerner in the South after the American Civil War usually seeking private gain under the Reconstruction governments”. “The term carpetbagger, used exclusively as a pejorative term, originated from the carpet bag, a form of cheap luggage, made from carpet fabric.”

I live in the metro Atlanta area. There is a fall line (a geological boundary) about twenty miles wide, running northeast across Georgia from Columbus to Augusta which separates the Piedmont (northern) region from the more coastal (southern) region, so it literally feels like two different states.

  • @neox9369

That’s how Maryland is, DC suburbs of central Maryland, then the eastern shore peninsula and western Maryland are less robust/diverse. FYI, that’s almost in every state to some degree

American cities in general are segregated. Believe it or not Metro Atlanta is less segregated than New York City and much less segregated than Chicago. As an African American I can tell you it’s about the only place I know in America where you see a decent number of Black people living in almost every area. Regardless of how high income the area is. And the term Black Belt was not meant to be a negative term like you are implying it is. It simply denotes an area of the country where a large number of the population is Black (the largest number in the country) this is ofcourse because of the slavery history of the US. Poor Black btw is not just a characteristic of the Deep South either. Black Americans in all parts of the country have significantly lower incomes than Whites and even more dramatically lower wealth. There’s a ton of reasons behind this. Most of those reasons having to do with historical events that were not just confined to the South. Not defending the South which has had a horrible history when it comes to race. But by making it sound as if the South is the only bad place you ignore a lot of things that are taking place elsewhere. For example Black people consistently rank Milwaukee as the worst place in America for a Black person to live while the majority often rank Atlanta as the best.

Civil war has ended, you have northeast, mid Atlantic, southeast Atlantic, south central, north central/midwest, North Pacific and southwest pacific or southwest central.

South Fulton is predominantly Black. The residents there rely heavily on the redistribution of tax dollars collected from the (largely White) North Fulton residents. North Fulton residents created new cities in 2005 and 2006 (Sandy Springs, Milton and John’s Creek). These cities, along with Alpharetta, Roswell and Mountain Park attempted to become part of the newly formed Milton County. They wanted to keep their money where they live which is an affluent, mainly Republican area, rather than funding what they see as failed Democrat policies and cronyism.
