I’m pretty new to bonsai (started less than two years ago). I enjoyed watching the video and learning from it. I have a few small JBPs that are various sizes. What advice would you give to help them bulk up this early in their life? I up-potted them in both regular potting soil and APL bonsai soil.

Hi Terry, you have some fantastic pines. I've always needle plucked 2-needle pines with my fingers, and give them a small twist which leaves the fascicle sheath intact. Some pines hold on to needles more than others, I've noticed. Not to fault your method, everyone seems to work a bit differently.

That's interesting, I've never seen anyone needle pluck by hand and it is not how I was taught by various Japanese pine masters in Japan. Not to fault your method if it works for you but I have no idea how you can be that dextrous and your fingers so thin to get into the canopy of a highly ramified pine and manage to grasp hold of only 2 needles at a time. But I guess if you have tried tweezers and your method works for you then stick with it, goal is to pluck the needles as fast as possible without any damage. Thanks for watching!

Hi there. Thanks for the comment. Best would be in spring when buds are swelling. It’s always going to be a risk when digging a pine but if you prepare it by chopping some roots the previous season it will help the collection.

As always, phenomenal masterclass. I know it probably would be a guess, but how old do you estimate these trees to be? They are magnificent specimens!

Thanks so much Victor! Yes very hard to say and absolutely a guess and I generally err on the side of being conservative but I’d say around 50 years old. Perhaps more. Either way it’s a beautiful tree and an honour to have owned it and now to maintain it.

Do you think that people who are mature enough in their knowledge to be able to work on a black pine, don’t know how to look after a pair of bonsai scissors …good grief

It grieves me that I have offended your intellect, however permit me to remind you that bonsai enthusiasts of all levels of skill may be watching this tutorial and per chance they have not been taught how to look after their scissors, that demonstration may indeed be useful.
